26 attractions of Yeysk recommended for visiting

Yeysk is a resort town on the shore of the Azov Sea, founded on the initiative of the Cossack ataman Grigory Rasp and with the assistance of His Serene Highness Prince Vorontsov in 1848, as a port for the sale of grain from lands beyond the Black Sea coast.

Today, the shallow, warm sea with a flat bottom is attractive because of the safety of holidays with children and the opportunity to receive inexpensive climatic and balneological treatments in sanatoriums.

The city itself is green and neat, its streets are straight and lead to the sea.

If you are going to Yeysk with a child, be sure to read the article about vacationing here with children, based on the personal experience of our author. And another article is about the nearby village of Dolzhanskaya, which is also well suited for a family holiday.

About the history of the city of Yeysk

The port city of Yeisk was founded in 1848 with a specific purpose: as a base for the sale of grain and other agricultural products of the Kuban, Don, and Stavropol regions abroad. The new port was built at the base of the Yeisk Spit - a narrow sandy peninsula washed by the waters of the Taganrog Bay and the Yeisk Estuary of the Azov Sea. The name comes from the Eya River, the mouth of which is located next door.

Just seven years after its founding, the city was severely destroyed by attacks by an English squadron during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. However, it was restored and by the beginning of the twentieth century it became one of the largest economic and cultural centers in the region. The port was reconstructed; the city is connected to the railway. Its history as a resort began in 1912: a balneological health resort was opened in Yeisk, with treatment with mud and hydrogen sulfide waters.

The Civil War and the Great Patriotic War became serious shocks for the city. During the civil period, Yeisk became the scene of bloody battles between the Reds and Whites, and changed hands many times. During the Great Patriotic War, he was subjected to heavy bombing by German aircraft and was under fascist occupation for six months.

Badges with the coat of arms of the city of Yeysk.

During Soviet times, the city grew several times: active housing construction began here. In addition to the seaport, a higher military aviation (originally naval aviation) school was located here. It was disbanded in 2011.

A distinctive feature of the old city is strictly perpendicular and parallel streets, squares of the correct shape - initially Yeysk was built up in strict accordance with the general plan, and not spontaneously. Modern Yeysk is a colorful collection of architecture from three eras: tsarist times, Soviet and architecture of the late 90s / early 2000s.

On the coat of arms of the city of Yeysk there is a diagonal wavy azure band, on which is applied a golden sterlet with red fins. This version of the coat of arms was given to the city in 1875 and restored in 1992. In Soviet times, the coat of arms of Yeysk depicted the sun rising from the waves and a soaring seagull, with an ear of corn and a gear obligatory for Soviet heraldry at the bottom of the coat of arms.

Oceanarium "Shark Reef"

The Yeisk Oceanarium, which opened in 2009, was the first on the Azov coast and remains one of the largest to this day. The territory of the complex is 700 sq. m, divided into non-thematic zones: Asian, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Amazonian. 12 aquariums are home to 5 thousand live exhibits, including angel fish, piranhas, clown fish, stingrays, and fire foxes.

True to its name, the underwater museum has a mega-aquarium with a capacity of 180 thousand liters, inhabited by the most dangerous predators - sharks. In a separate pool live starfish, which you can hold in your hands, and turtles swarm in the nearby terrarium.

The tour of the aquarium lasts an hour and begins with the demonstration of a 15-minute video telling about the inhabitants of the deep sea. The most fascinating moment for visitors is feeding the pets, including sharks, moray eels and piranhas.

Sverdlova Street

The same historical center, the street is framed by buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, it’s worth walking along the street at least twice. During the day it will seem to you that this is an ordinary noisy street with crowds of people, and in the evening it is closed to cars, so everyone goes out for a walk, enjoy the music of artists, and try local ice cream .

On the street itself there are such attractions as a bust of Ataman Chepega, a fountain with goddesses and more.

Long braid

The Dolgaya Spit is a natural border between the Taganrog Bay and the main part of the Azov Sea. Its length is approximately 8-10 kilometers, and all of these are beautiful sandy and shell beaches. This nature reserve is also interesting because there are excellent conditions for surfing, and surfers from all over Russia come here every year to ride the sea waves.

On the Long Spit.

Enterprises and work in Yeysk

In the Yeisk region there are about 50 large and medium-sized enterprises in various fields of activity, including several largest port ones. Enterprises are developing, production volumes are growing every year, but salaries and working conditions leave much to be desired. In addition, at the end of last year, a jump in unemployment was recorded due to the closure of the Yeisk Aviation School.

Several of Yeisk's largest enterprises went bankrupt and ceased to exist, some were “demoted” to the status of small enterprises due to financial problems. There are cases of administrative violations being identified at the Yeisk Sea Port enterprise.

Yeisk. Sea port

The average monthly salary in the region is 15,482.4 rubles. The salary of workers in maritime transport, the food industry, wholesale and retail trade, insurance, as well as financiers and builders can reach up to 30 thousand rubles. Budget specialties, as throughout Russia, are paid quite modestly - a little more than 10 thousand rubles.

There are no arrears in salary payments at any enterprise. The number of citizens' appeals to the Center for Social Protection in 2012 amounted to 4,400 people, of which 2,887 people. 822 people asked for assistance in finding a suitable job. received the status of official unemployed. Yeisk. GM Magnit

Despite the promising figures, half of Yerevan residents live not from their salaries, but from resort activities. Summer daily rental of housing by the sea, seasonal price jumps allow city residents to earn good money and save money for the winter. Those who have their own small business in one area or another make good money. The local people do not particularly like the main jobs in enterprises.

They also love to fish in the city - pelengas, which is bought with a bang by vacationers in the summer.

Yeisk fishermen

Khanskoye (Tatar) Lake

A closed steppe reservoir sixty kilometers from Yeisk, in the southern part of the Yeisk Peninsula. The length of the lake is about 16 km, width - from 6 to 7 km, maximum depth (in spring) - up to two meters, in summer - only 5-10 cm. The magnesium-sodium and sulfate-chloride water of Lake Khan is saturated with minerals and salt. In ancient times, in the summer, during drying out, table salt was mined from the bottom of the lake, and the income from this fishing went to the treasury of the Crimean Khan, who, after the annexation of Crimea, could no longer live, as before, by predatory raids on Russian lands and became a vassal of Russia.

Summer on Khanskoye Lake.

Nowadays table salt is not mined here. But medicinal mud and brine - yes. The composition is similar to the mud of Lake Saki, Odessa Estuary, and Tambukan Lake in Pyatigorsk. It helps to cope with diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems, digestive organs, joints, and maintain the freshness and beauty of the skin. The flora and fauna around the reservoir is also rich. Especially ornithological - cormorants, pelicans, flamingos, and laughing gulls live in its vicinity.

Attractions

Island of the Seven Winds

Address: 3 km. from the end of the Yeisk Spit, you can get there by boat or on a tour. Book an excursion: 8-918-455-00-06, 8-928-440-11-06

It appeared in 1914, when a strong storm washed away part of the Yeisk Spit. It immediately acquired a ring-shaped shape and remained uninhabited forever. Thanks to this circumstance, the island was quickly and densely populated by birds: pelicans, herons, gulls, cormorants and other marine species. They have become the masters of the island, and the people here are only tourists.

There are a lot of types of recreation on the Island of the Seven Winds:
  • Active recreation - walks deep into the island to look at the plants and admire the birds, walks along the shores to improve your health with the healing hydrogen sulfide mud. Beautiful landscapes and the opportunity to see the inhabitants of the island up close await you on any route you choose.
  • Extreme recreation - sailing, surfing and yachting in the waters of the Taganrog Bay, thanks to the strong wind that blows here almost constantly, is very interesting and successful.
  • Fishing – there are no fewer fish in the island’s waters than there are birds in its airspace; few people manage to leave without a catch.
  • A relaxing holiday - you can organize a classic picnic and admire the beautiful scenery of the Azov Sea.

For lovers of landscape photography and animal photographers, this is, without exaggeration, a real paradise!

Park and Museum named after I.M. Poddubny

A park

Address: st. Pervomaiskaya, 189/1 Phone: +7 (86132) 5-02-69, +7 (86132) 5-02-68 Website : https://park-poddubnogo.ru/obshhaya-informaciya/ Opening hours: The park is open to Visits around the clock throughout the year. Attractions in the park are open:

  • in May - from 14:00 to 20:00;
  • in summer - from 10:00 to 22:00;
  • in September - from 14:00 to 20:00.

A green area for the recreation of citizens was developed back in 1898: alleys with a few attractions were laid out, benches were installed and the park was called a city park.

Perhaps it would have been called that until today, but in 1927, the world-famous wrestler Ivan Poddubny settled in the city. During his lifetime, the strongman who became a legend flatly refused invitations to move to America or Europe; he remained in his homeland, represented it in competitions, and raised students. Ivan Maksimovich was buried in this park, where he loved walking.

Citizens call their park “the smile of the city.” There really are a lot of smiles here. They are attracted by children's rides on more than 30 attractions, games in slot machine pavilions, performances of artists on the summer stage, and annual tours of the circus tent. Entertainment for adults includes shooting galleries and billiards.

Families with children will be interested in a trip to an ostrich farm with a small zoo. Here you can not only watch African ostriches, badgers, porcupines, colorful parrots, and peacocks, but also freely take pictures with them.

Museum

Address: Park named after. I. Poddubnogo (entrance from Marx Street) Phone: 8 (6132) 30-640 Website : https://park-poddubnogo.ru/muzej/ Opening hours: 9.00 – 17.00 Tuesday – Saturday Cost : 50 rub. (children), 100 rub. (adult), 200 rub. (excursion support)

Walking along the alley of the park, you can and even need to come to the only museum in Russia of the world-famous Yeychanin.

More than two thousand exhibits of the museum are housed in a hall designed as a circus tent arena, where wrestling competitions took place until the beginning of the 20th century.

The athlete’s personal belongings were donated to the museum by his relatives and the collector Potokin, who studied the biography of Ivan Poddubny and the history of wrestling. Among them are training clothes, sports equipment, posters with autographs of the strongman artist.

Interesting exhibits are:

  • Belt for Russian belt wrestling, the predecessor of Greco-Roman wrestling, at that time called French.
  • “Gift from I.M. Poddubny for a minute of French struggle” is a souvenir bill that our hero gave to those who resisted for a minute of a duel with him (this happened).
  • Hand-embroidered oriental robe in which he entered the arena.
  • A cast-iron cane weighing almost 20 kilograms, with which Ivan Maksimovich was walking, and a particularly meticulous American journalist, having received it from the hands of the famous wrestler, fell with it in surprise. Today everyone is offered a walk with the champion’s cane.

Khanskoye (Tatar) Lake

How to get there: bus No. 134 to Kopanskaya station, then walk in a westerly direction for about 8 km. Or bus number 133 to Yasenskaya station, then walk in an easterly direction for about 5.5 km.

This steppe lake, unique in many respects, is located approximately 60 kilometers from Yeisk, in the southern part of the Yeisk Peninsula. Its length is approximately 16 km, its width is 6-7 km, its maximum depth in spring is 1.8 m, in summer – 5-10 cm. This is due to the fact that the lake is a closed reservoir and is replenished only due to precipitation and underground sources.

The water of the lake is marine type: saturated with minerals and salt, according to the predominance of substances in the chemical composition: magnesium-sodium, sulfate-chloride. When the lake dried up completely, during the years of Tatar rule, table salt was collected from its bottom, which well supported the treasury of the Crimean Khan. Perhaps this is where its names came from. Today, something no less valuable is extracted from the lake - healing mud. Its composition is similar to the mud of Lake Saki, the Odessa estuary, and Lake Tambukan in Pyatigorsk. Sulfates, carbonates, chlorides of calcium, magnesium and sodium from the mud of Lake Tatar help cure diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems, digestive organs, joints, and maintain the freshness and beauty of the skin.

The flora and fauna around the reservoir is also rich: cormorants, pelicans, flamingos, laughing gulls live in its vicinity, 14 species of birds in this area are listed in the Red Book, medicinal plants are represented by more than 700 species.

Monument to dumplings

Address: Taganrog embankment

A beautiful white pedestal glorifying the national dish. A concrete dumpling is located on a festive tablecloth next to a butter dish. The inscription on the monument is a wish to all readers to live like dumplings in butter. The artist and sculptor of the masterpiece is Inna Sapozhnikova.

Interesting monuments to celebrities whose lives are connected with Yeisk:

  • Sergei Bondarchuk, who spent his childhood and youth in Yeisk and began his career in the local drama theater (in the center of Pobeda Street).

  • Nonna Mordyukova, who lived in Yeisk before entering VGIK. The sculpture, which represents a collective image of her simple and sincere film heroines, is installed on the street. Lenina, 42 to the left of the entrance to the Zvezda cinema.

Sverdlova Street - promenade in the historical center of the city

It’s comfortable to walk here both day and night – the street is closed to vehicles. On both sides there are buildings built from the 19th – early 20th centuries, cozy cafes and retail outlets, and local artists and musicians perform in the evenings.

At the intersection with Lenin Street, the bust of Zakharia Chepega, the Koshe chieftain, who led the Black Sea Army to spend the winter on the Yeisk Spit in 1792, is worthy of attention, thereby attracting people to the development of the Kuban.

Between Lenin and Liebknecht streets, a pavement made of ballast stones from foreign ships arriving at the port has been preserved. Several stones bear “news” from a 19th-century city newspaper. On the third floor of building 104 there is a local history museum.

Further down the street is a fountain with four Greek goddesses holding a dish on their heads from which streams of water flow.

A walk on the street on a summer evening gives you the pleasure of the historical mansions of the city in the soft light of the lanterns and the opportunity to pleasantly relax in a restaurant or cafe.

Park and Museum named after Ivan Poddubny. Other city parks

In Yeisk, they do not forget that the famous wrestler and athlete Ivan Poddubny (1871-1949) settled here after completing his sports and circus career. His grave, with the inscription “Here lies the Russian hero,” is located in the largest local park, which is now named after the great athlete. The Poddubny Memorial Museum is also located here. Monuments to the fighter stand both near the museum and at the main entrance to the park (from Pervomaiskaya Street).

The park has existed since 1898: it was then that a green zone was created on this site for cultural recreation of citizens and guests of the city. Nowadays, it pleases with its picturesque and well-groomed appearance: magnificent fountains, flower beds, lawns, forged fences and art objects, paving slabs and small architectural forms. There is plenty of space for kids to roam: playgrounds, more than thirty attractions, a mini-zoo, and annual circus tours. There are shooting galleries and billiard rooms for adults. There are cafes. The park contains one of the richest collections of attractions in Russia. This is not an accident: in Soviet times, it was in Yeisk that the company producing this specific product worked.

Poddubny Museum and a monument to the fighter near it.

In the hall of the one-of-a-kind museum of Ivan Poddubny, everything is decorated like the arena of an ancient circus tent. The exhibition includes more than two thousand different exhibits, clearly telling about the life of the great athlete and the history of classical wrestling. There are also Poddubny’s personal belongings. Among them is an embroidered oriental robe, in which he entered the arena; a souvenir bill that the wrestler gave to the daredevil who could survive one minute in a fight with him without falling; a cast iron cane with which a wrestler walked.

Not far from Poddubny Park, on Karl Marx Street, there is the second largest green area of Yeysk - the city park named after Gorky. It is notable for its monuments and sculptures. There are also playgrounds and cafes here.

Next to the city Palace of Culture is Nikolsky Park (formerly Kalinin Park). It has a round shape. Next to the Taganrog embankment there is a well-maintained Primorsky Park. Its most picturesque part is located next to the Cossack Kuren, at one of the descents to the sea.
