Ussuriysk is one of the largest cities in the Russian Far East (population is about 170 thousand people). It was founded in the mid-19th century on the site of the ancient Chinese settlement of Suiping. How can this city interest tourists? In this article you will find a list of the main attractions of Ussuriysk (with photos and detailed descriptions). In addition, we will tell you where in this city you can spend your time fun and meaningfully.
Ussuriysk: city sights and most interesting places
We must admit: tourists in Ussuriysk are rare guests. Most often, travelers fly or sail to Vladivostok (120 kilometers to the south), and then go to explore the various natural wonders and unique reserves of Primorye. Only a few of them end up in this city. Why is it worth visiting Ussuriysk for at least a couple of days? Let's figure it out.
Let's start with architecture. It is presented here in several styles at once. Thus, in Ussuriysk you can see houses of the pre-revolutionary and Soviet era, as well as modern buildings. The development of the city, according to the famous blogger Ilya Varlamov, is “very loose and disorderly.” Nevertheless, in its central part several dozen ancient buildings from the late 19th – early 20th centuries have been preserved.
Among the notable architectural objects of Ussuriysk, it is worth highlighting the military hospital complex on Karbysheva Street, the People's House, the fire tower of 1914, the House of Officers, the Holy Protection Church and the building of the Nikolsk-Ussuri Real School.
Ussuriysk is a city of ancient brick buildings, interesting monuments, green parks and picturesque landscapes. And there is definitely something to see here. We bring to your attention a far from complete list of natural, historical and architectural attractions of Ussuriysk:
- Stone turtle of the Jurchen state.
- Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- Lotus Lake.
- Emerald Valley Historical Park.
- Theater of the Eastern Military District.
- Real school building.
- Commemorative steam locomotive El-629.
Below you will find brief information on each of the listed attractions of Ussuriysk (with descriptions and photographs).

Stone turtle
Without a doubt, the most famous landmark of Ussuriysk is a stone sculpture in the form of a sea turtle, dating back to the 12th century. Soviet scientist Vitaly Larichev found out that this sculpture once adorned the tomb of the Jurchen commander Esykuy, who died in 1148. In medieval China, the turtle was a symbol of longevity and meant that a person belonged to a noble family. The monument is located in the central park of Ussuriysk.
Holy Protection Church
The stone Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ussuriysk was built and consecrated in 1907. But twenty years later the church was closed, and a warehouse was installed in the building. Over the years, the temple became increasingly destroyed. Only in 1945 was it returned to believers and began to be restored (not without the participation of prisoners of war of the Japanese army). The building is designed in the traditions of classical Orthodox architecture of the early twentieth century and is distinguished by its luxurious decor.
Views of the old and new city in one photograph - a project of PrimaMedia and the Ussuriysk Museum
Historical views of the city in relation to modernity in one photograph - such a project for the 149th anniversary of Ussuriysk, celebrated today, September 13, was prepared by RIA PrimaMedia together with the city’s historical and local history museum. The museum foundation provided ancient photographs and information support; the collages will be demonstrated to citizens in the central square as part of the photo exhibition “Me and My Street.” The brief review covers only a few architectural monuments of the city, which at one time were the hallmark of Ussuriysk, but they also show how the appearance of buildings and streets has changed over the years, reports the correspondent. RIA PrimaMedia.
Information: Ussuriysk originates from the founding of the village of Nikolskoye in 1866 by settlers from the Astrakhan and Voronezh provinces of Russia. It developed as a city with the start of construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1891. In 1893, military engineer Prince Kropotkin drew up a project for a new city, which provided for the formation of a public center in the form of a system of three squares - Cathedral, Teatralnaya and Torgovaya, united by the future main street of the city - Chichagovskaya (today Vorovsky Street). That year, there were 471 buildings in Nikolskoye, of which 10 were stone; the Nikolskoye station building was built. The decision of the authorities, dated April 3, 1898, ordered: “To form from the village of Nikolskoye in the South Ussuri Okrug, Primorsky Region, together with a village that arose near it near the Nikolskaya station of the Ussuri Railway, a city called: “Nikolsk-Ussuriysky.” In 1935 the city began to be called Voroshilov, and since 1957 - Ussuriysk.

D& Nightclub )
The Chinese merchant Panchiosa built the building at the beginning of the last century, and initially it was the Chinese Theater. On its territory there were opium dens, where twilight reigned, and the walls were decorated with a poster with hieroglyphs proclaiming: “When the opium pipe is in your hands, you are the lord of the chariot in the clouds of happiness.” Here in those days it was possible to get a morphine injection. Old-timers claimed that on the territory of the theater there was a secret underground passage leading out of the city, but to date researchers have not discovered it. In 1925, the Chinese Theater was nationalized and became a hotel. And in 1932, a small enterprise, KECH No. 3, was opened there to renovate apartments for military personnel. From 1937 to 1993, a woodworking plant (DOK-313) operated on the territory of the former Chinese Theater. After this, the building remained empty for a long time.

St. Nicholas Cathedral of Nikolsk-Ussuriysk (in its place is now the headquarters of the 5th Combined Arms Army)
The foundation stone of the St. Nicholas Cathedral took place in 1894, with a large gathering of townspeople and troops of the local garrison. In 1901, construction was completed, and its cost was 200 thousand “royal” rubles backed by gold. Funds for the construction of the temple were collected by Archpriest Pavel Michurin, after whom one of the streets of the city was later named (now Kalinin Street). The cathedral in Nikolsk-Ussuriysk for a long time remained the largest not only in Primorye, but also in the Amur region, and repeated the design of the established church in St. Petersburg. The dome of St. Nicholas Cathedral rose above the city to a height of 51 meters. In 1932, the cathedral was blown up.

Grand Hotel on Nikolaevskaya Street (now clinic No. 1 on Krasnoznamenaya Street)
The building was built in 1907 as an upscale Grand Hotel with a restaurant and an illusion hall. The owner was Churin and Co. According to some reports, 130 revolutionaries were executed in the building in 1918. In the 30s of the last century, the building was extended, and it continued to function as a city hotel. Since 1935, the rights to the premises have been transferred to the city health service. To this day, clinic No. 1 operates here.
People's House. Photo: Dmitry Prokopyak, PrimaMedia
People's House (now Ussuri Drama Theater named after Komissarzhevskaya)
The building was built according to the design of the architect Vinogradov in a style close to modernism, with donations from the M. Pyankov s br. Trading House. The commission chose the area of the city adjacent to Sennaya Square as the construction site. The curtain first opened on the stage of the People's House in 1908, and before the revolution, artists known to theatergoers worked here at various times. The building also housed a three-class primary school, a library and a reading room. In 1928, the House of the Red Army was located here, and from 1954 to 1958 the House of Pioneers functioned. After this, the building was again transferred to the theater, which is located here to this day.

Dukhovskaya Street (now Frunze Street).
The three-story building at the modern address Frunze, 95, was started by Sergei Garanin, a paramedic at the Nikolsk-Ussuriysk City Hospital, in 1909. It was assumed that there would be a “tenement house” for receiving patients. The bank issued a loan for construction at interest, however, after building two floors, the paramedic died, and the unfinished building was bought at auction by the wealthy homeowner Gurilevich. He completed the third floor and opened a first-class hotel with a restaurant and private rooms, and lit a red lantern at the entrance. The hotel operated until nationalization, after which it housed a labor exchange, urban architecture, a residential building, and a city court with a bar. Since 1978, the building has housed the city archive, and from 1985 to 1992 the building was closed for renovation. After that, and to this day, the building houses the district court.

The building operated as a postal and telegraph office only before the revolution. Then the district rear headquarters, the district party committee and the district executive committee of the Slavyansky and Ussuri districts were located there. During the Great Patriotic War, there were guarded apartments for employees of the regional executive committee, and since 1963 - the editorial office of the regional newspaper "Lenin's Banner".

Voroshilov House (now the House of Officers of the Russian Army)
The new House of Officers appeared in Ussuriysk (at that time in the city of Voroshilov) after the visit of Marshal of the Soviet Union Kliment Voroshilov in 1938, after the end of the fighting on Lake Khasan. Before this, the garrison House of Red Army Officers was located in the building where the Komissarzhevskaya Drama Theater is now located. By order of People's Commissar Voroshilov, the already developed project and estimate of the District House of the Red Army of the North Caucasus Military District were sent to Ussuriysk (Voroshilov). In 1940, construction began on the site of the former hay market. During the Great Patriotic War, construction stopped, and for several years only the walls of a 4-story red brick building rose above the city. In November 1947, work resumed with the participation of Japanese prisoners of war, and was completed on January 1, 1954. Immediately after the war, the Ussuri House of Officers was popularly called “Voroshilov’s House.”

Palace of Culture named after. Chumaka (now Grand Plaza shopping center)
By the decision of the presidium of Uchkprofsozh (precinct committee of the railway workers' trade union - editor) in 1925, it was decided to build a new railway club building. Despite the difficulties with building materials, they were procured by a working team of about 200 people, and the construction itself lasted about six months. In 1926, the grand opening of the Palace of Culture took place at the Nikolsk-Ussuriysky station, which became the first railway club of this scale in the country's railway network.

Administration of the Primorsky Railway (now the main building of the Perm State Agricultural Academy)
The building was built in the first half of the last century. From 1941 to 1945, the Primorsky Railway Administration was located here, which was disbanded. In 1957, 552 students of the agronomy and zootechnical faculties moved here, and with them 62 teachers and employees of the Yaroslavl Agricultural Institute.

The building was founded in 1935 according to the design of Christina (Dalprogor Institute in Khabarovsk). Built in the Stalinist Empire style. The construction lasted for many years; the building was commissioned only in 1954 and was a modern hotel for those years. On the ground floor there was a buffet and a restaurant.

Lake with lotuses
The number one natural attraction of Ussuriysk is the so-called Lotus Lake. It is located 20 kilometers from the city, near the village of Dubovy Klyuch. Tourists come here from all over the Primorsky Territory to see with their own eyes the extraordinary beauty of this reservoir. It is especially crowded here in mid-August, when the lotus blooms and part of the lake is covered with a carpet of soft pink flowers.
"Emerald Valley"
Not far from the city there is the Emerald Valley landscape and historical park. An ancient Russian village has been accurately recreated here: with wooden huts, forges, ramparts and pottery workshops, numerous household items from the times of Ancient Rus' have been collected. A great place to plunge headlong into the distant past of our country! The park often hosts various festivals and city celebrations.
Trip around Ussuriysk: visiting Santa Claus, animals and an extinct volcano
Many tourists coming to Primorye stop in Vladivostok to see the sights and get acquainted with the local cuisine. However, in other municipalities of the region, for example, in the Ussuri urban district, there is something to see. This urban district is filled with historical features and attractions, recreation parks and zoos, old architecture and natural beauty, reports PrimaMedia.
Emerald Valley
Climb a high observation tower, take a walk in a fairytale forest and even visit the residence of Father Frost - this and much more can be done in the Russian historical family recreation park “Emerald Valley”. This fabulous place straight from the past is located 6 km from Ussuriysk.
The park is conventionally divided into several zones. In the historical and geographical section there are exhibitions of the life of both the indigenous peoples of Primorye and the Russian population: buildings from the Bronze and Iron Ages. There are not only human dwellings here, but also sanctuaries, ramparts, vehicles, and a pottery workshop.
As the tour guide, Chairman of the Ussuri branch of the Russian Geographical Society Alexander Mezentsev, said, the exhibition with medieval instruments of torture is especially popular.
Another feature of the park is a pond with ducks and geese, which you can feed while taking photos with a huge flock of quacking birds. Near the old Russian huts there are also animals - guard dogs. They not only protect the territory of the park, but also create an entourage.
Volcano Baranovsky
Standing on a cliff and watching the trains moving below, it’s scary to even imagine that you are on the edge of a volcano crater. But, as it turned out, there is nothing to be afraid of - the Baranovsky volcano has been considered extinct for many millions of years.
The western part of the crater is considered the highest point. It is also the best preserved. The height here is about 160 meters, which allows you to enjoy the views from a bird's eye view. The Razdolnaya River flows through the crater of the volcano. There is also the Baranovskaya railway station and the Baranovsky village.
Peering into the cut of the crater you can see frozen lava and orange pumice. The most beautiful views here are in summer due to the green oak trees.
"Big" Buddha
Buddha in human form is one of the brightest symbols of the history of Primorsky Krai. The Jurchens were well acquainted with him, and the ancient Asian peoples respected him. Russian Koreans decided to revive the traditions of their people. Due to its height, the statue is clearly visible from all sides.
The initiator of the appearance of the stone statue is the regional foundation of Primorye Koreans “Renaissance”, headed by General Director Victor Kim. Every year there are more and more supporters of Buddhism among the members of the autonomy. The structure weighs almost 15 tons and is 5 meters high. So far this is definitely the largest Buddha in the Far East.
Tourists can get to the Buddha statue only by personal transport or by an organized group on a sightseeing bus. From the village of Utyosnoye (the nearest settlement) the travel time will take less than five minutes by car.
Zoo "Wonderful"
One of the best zoos in Primorye, “Wonderful,” is located in the village of Borisovka, Ussuri urban district. Here visitors will be able to see wild predators - lions, tigers, pumas and wolves - so close that it may seem as if there is no protection. But everything is very safe. The unusual system of enclosures allows you to walk around it and examine the animal from any side. Due to the low external fence, located a meter from the main walls of the enclosure, nothing prevents visitors from viewing the tigers and lions in close proximity.
The “Wonderful” Zoo is for the most part considered a contact zoo, because many of the animals here can be petted, and especially loving ones run freely around the park and delight visitors with their affectionate behavior. Among them are English and Cameroonian goats, hares and ducks. You can often see ponies walking. Wild boars, pigs, rabbits, deer, rams and goats live in open enclosures.
On the territory of the zoo there is a “Raccoon Village”. There are more than 20 of these wonderful animals here. There are both adults - cautious and wary of strangers, and juveniles, who literally hang on the cage at the sight of visitors, happily stretching their little paws towards them and accepting treats.
Stone turtle from the Jin Empire era
The stone object installed in the Ussuri Dora Park can truly be considered a relic, because it existed back in the 13th century. This is a unique example of monumental sculpture of those times.
Such a turtle was installed in the family cemetery, next to the burial place of a member of the Wanyan imperial family. In 1864, it was discovered in the city of Nikolsk near Sennaya Square. Now this is the city of Ussuriysk, and on the site of the square there is a city park. Having survived several movements around the city, the stone turtle is now firmly established at the entrance to the park.
History is kept there
The Ussuri Museum is one of the leading historical, cultural and educational institutions in the Ussuri urban district. It was opened in 1999 and exhibits items related to the history of the Ussuri urban district and Primorsky Krai.
The museum has three exhibition halls and one exhibition hall. The exhibition “Ussuri Antiquities” presents artifacts discovered by archaeologists on the territory of the Ussuri urban district. The most ancient objects date back to 30-40 thousand years ago.
The “Resettlement” hall introduces the household items of the first Russian settlers to the Far East. Personal belongings, household items and household items of residents of the village of Nikolskoye are presented.
The Hall of Military Glory displays items related to residents of the city and region who participated in the Great Patriotic War, the war in Afghanistan and other local conflicts.
In warmth and beauty
Where to go on a weekend in winter? Ski resorts, cinema, cafes? Or you can go to the open-air pool - you can swim in it at an “overboard” temperature of -20°C, and also stroll through the winter garden, in which plants of tropical and subtropical climates live. All this can be found in the sports complex of the Ussuriysk station, which has been operating for many years.
The sports complex of the Ussuriysk station is located at the address: st. Popova, 33. This is an area of the city remote from the center, so you can get here by taxi, private car or regular buses.
People enter the pool water while still in the waiting room, and then swim out into the fresh air. Visitors can swim in a bowl up to two meters deep, divided into lanes, as well as in a 1.55-meter pool.
The water is usually heated to +32°C, but if you want to warm up, you can go to the sauna for a while.
After a swimming session, take a look at the winter garden. Palm trees and other types of plants of the subtropical and tropical zones grow under the ceiling arches. When you walk along the paths of the garden, you feel like you are in the jungle. A family of turtles lives in a local artificial pond, and catfish swim.
Terrain Base
If you are looking for a place for colorful photographs, then believe me, the Morozovsky Khutor family landscape park is ideal for this. In a small area, the owners create many colorful photo zones, against which wonderful photographs are obtained.
Despite the fact that the park is a great place for photo shoots, it is still a base for a one-day vacation. In Morozovsky Khutor you can rent a gazebo near the mini-zoo, or near the river. Cook a delicious barbecue and drink tea on the banks of a mountain river - what could be better? The base also has heated gazebos and a house, which is great to spend time in in winter.
The pride of the owners of the family business is the bathhouse. You can also book it and relax with a group of up to 10 people. In winter, guests, running out of the steam room, like to dive into the river hole. Soon, as the owners said, a large vat will appear next to the sauna house, where you can relax at any time of the year.
The base is home to raccoons, peacocks and cats. This is another feature of a family business. Two peacocks and one cat live together - once the owners picked him up from the street, but their own kind did not accept the little kitten. Then it was decided to attach the baby to the birds.
We remind you that the state program “Tourism Development in the Primorsky Territory” for 2020-2027 is being implemented in the region.
Commemorative steam locomotive El-629
At the Ussuriysk railway station there is a locomotive that took an active part in the events of the First World War and the Civil War. And it was manufactured overseas, at the American Baldwin plant. According to one version (most likely untrue), “fighters for Soviet power” Sergei Lazo, Alexey Lutsky and Vsevolod Sibirtsev were burned in the firebox of this locomotive in 1920.
Where to go in Ussuriysk: a brief overview of entertainment and reviews from tourists
Perhaps the most pleasant place for leisurely walks in Ussuriysk is Dora Park. Here, by the way, there are attractions, trampolines and playgrounds for children, and there is a small zoo corner. And the most touching area in the park is the so-called Newlyweds Alley, decorated with two angels on a pink pedestal.
After a walk through the park, you can climb the Love Hill. From here you have the most picturesque view of the city. On hot days you can have a great rest on the shore of Soldatskoye Lake. This place is highly praised by both residents of Ussuriysk and guests of the city. There is a great beach, swimming pool and catamaran rentals.
There are several good clubs in Ussuriysk. For example, a club with the simple name “Garage” regularly organizes unforgettable show programs. Among catering establishments, tourists are strongly advised to visit the Noah's Ark restaurant, the Skazka cafe and the Country Pizza pizzeria. The Atmosphere quest club is very popular in the city, where you can have fun solving difficult and interesting puzzles.
Route to the past of Ussuriysk: a walk through the “old town”
“To take a walk through the old city,” was approximately how many Ussuri residents answered the question of what they would offer to guests of the city. Indeed, the historical quarter in the city center is a unique place that has preserved its authenticity. About what to look at, what to talk about if you have to give an excursion for visiting relatives, in the continuation of the material of the UssurMedia news agency.
In the first part of the route through the business center of Nikolsk-Ussuri, we stopped at the intersection of Korsakovskaya (modern Timiryazeva) and Michurinskaya (Kalinina) streets. Directly in front of us is the store of merchant F.I. Stetskevich. Today, this one-story building, built at the beginning of the last century, houses a musical instrument store, and its façade is decorated with the “Military Book” sign left over from Soviet times.

The neighboring building is also related to the book trade. More than a hundred years ago, the book and stationery store of the Yankovsky and Trusov Partnership was located here. Among the many activities that the partnership was involved in, postcard printing was of particular benefit to history buffs. One of the postcards printed in Vladivostok by the Yankovsky and Trusov publishing house allows us today to see Ussuriysk at the beginning of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, not all architectural monuments have been preserved in their original form. Behind Stetskevich's store you can see a fire-damaged two-story brick building built at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the many tenement houses was located here.
Burnt apartment building. Photo: IA UssurMedia
Another victim of the times is depicted on a postcard from the publishing house of Yankovsky and Trusov. When you first look at the black and white image, your attention is drawn to the stone cathedral towering above all the buildings. The cathedral was built according to the design of military engineer Vaclav Zhigalkovsky, who was in Nikolsk-Ussuriysk on a business trip and was engaged in the construction of a military hospital. The height of the cathedral was 51 meters, it was designed for two thousand people. Having existed for a little over 30 years, the cathedral was blown up. True, on the territory of the headquarters of the 5th Army, a one-story building that was part of the temple complex is still preserved.
If, having reached the intersection of modern Timiryazev and Lenin streets, you turn your back to the unpreserved cathedral, then on both sides in front of you you will see apartment buildings and city shopping arcades. At various times there were shoe stores, a perfume shop, a pharmacy, hairdressers, and a photographic bureau. Nikolsk-Ussuri residents could find here any product from outerwear or porcelain dishes to a piano or telephone. Along the street, hitching posts were dug into the ground, and wooden walkways led to each building from the road.

Let's return to the starting point of today's route. The shopping mall located at the crossroads was built in the 1890s by the Churin and K trading house. In total, there were two I.Ya. stores in Nikolsk-Ussuriysky. Churin, an Irkutsk merchant who founded a large trading company that had representative offices in neighboring China. Clothes and shoes, jewelry, furniture, building materials, wine, Indian tea, typewriters, fire extinguishers - this is not a complete list of goods sold in the Churina and K store in our city.

Behind the Old GUM there is a large two-story red brick building. In the past, warehouses were located here. Few people know, but these warehouses are still connected by a gallery passage to the trading house store on Kalinin (Michurinskaya) Street.

Opposite the building of the Churin and K trading house at the beginning of the last century there was an indoor market known as Daiko Passage. Since the structure was made of wood, fires occurred more than once. In the 1920s, the market was demolished and for a long time this place was a vacant lot surrounded by a fence.
Daiko Passage was located here. Photo: IA UssurMedia
At the end of the route through the business center of Nikolsk-Ussuriysky, you cannot ignore several more buildings located along Nikolaevskaya Street. Initially, the street was called Bolshaya, but in 1891 it was renamed in honor of the visit of Tsarevich Nicholas (future Emperor Nicholas II), the modern name is Krasnoznamennaya.
On one of the facades of the city clinic building, the inscription “1907” is still preserved, indicating the year of construction. It was in this building that the prestigious Grand Hotel was located, the name of which was usually written in English. In 1935, the building was transferred to the city health service.

The last object on the route was a small building filled with history like no other. In 1897, in the then village of Nikolskoye, a building was built for the first educational institution of the future city - an elementary school. During the Soviet years, the building housed a general education and sports school. Today, the Ussuri Museum is located here - the main historical and educational institution of the city.
