We continue our summer voyage through the cities and towns of our native Tambov region. Today we will go for new impressions to a cozy town in the east of the region - Kirsanov.

But before visiting the city itself, I suggest stopping at the crossroads of roads in Inzhavino and Kirsanov, 20 kilometers before our goal. Here is the wonderful holy spring “Voznesensky”. You can’t see it from the road, since it is hidden behind a forest protection belt, and even in the depths of a ravine. But the well-worn road between the trees will tell you the direction.

And then there is an equipped staircase leading to the source and the bathhouse near it. The water in the source is tasty, and most importantly, very healing. And the view from the height of the ravine of all this beauty is very inspiring.

The cozy town of Kirsanov is located on the left bank of the Vorona River, where relaxation is always wonderful. Having become a district town back in 1779, Kirsanov developed as a merchant town. The houses of the ancient buildings, which have survived to this day, give it a patriarchal appearance.

There are a lot of nice buildings. But there are also such architectural monuments as the Kirsanovsky zemstvo council, the railway station building, the Kirsanovsky merchant club - now a local history museum, and so on.

Train Station

You can stay in the city for several days. Since it can take a day to explore the city and relax by the river. It is also convenient to travel from here to various points on the eastern route.

The development of Kirsanov was planned. It is crossed by 16 streets at right angles, dividing it into 32 squares. Factories, an elevator and two schools later fit into this plan. The flavor of a provincial town of the 19th century is given by the famous shopping arcades connecting the two main streets.

Fairs were always held on the square between the rows. The purpose of the square and rows has not changed in our time. Several years ago the rows were restored, so today they have a very attractive appearance.

Of the church buildings, first of all, you need to visit the Tikhvin Church, part of the most famous ancient Tikhvin-Bogoroditsky convent in the Tambov province, which was located on the northern side of Kirsanov and was quite distant from the city center. The founder of this monastery is considered to be the Venerable Martha of Tambov (Aparina).

Tikhvin Temple

Through the efforts of the abbess and all the nuns, the monastery became prosperous. Over the course of a hundred years, it grew so much that by the beginning of the 20th century it occupied an entire block in the city. The monastery included the Tikhvin Church with a refectory and lower church, a house church in a two-story wooden hospital building, a school for 100 children, an orphanage, 16 buildings housing workshops and cells of nuns, outbuildings, a cattle and horse yard, a garden, a hotel for 45 places for pilgrims.

Before its closure and partial destruction during Soviet times, the Tikhvin Church was a magnificent structure. Almost a century later, in 2009, its solemn transfer to the Tambov Metropolis took place. Today a project for the restoration of the church has been developed. Fundraising and implementation of the project is currently underway.

Another architectural monument is the Kosmodamian cemetery church. One of the oldest buildings in the city was first mentioned in the second half of the 18th century. The temple was named in honor of the unmercenary and miracle workers Cosmas and Damian of Asia. At first the church was built wooden, and then in the 19th century it was rebuilt and it became stone. In 1903, at the expense of the merchant Krylova, the church was restored and a brand new iconostasis was installed. And the artist of the Imperial Academy Afanasy Nadezhdin re-made the wall painting.

In the fall of 1937, the entire clergy of the Kosmodamian Church was arrested, two priests were shot, the rest were sentenced to prison. The temple was closed. At the end of the Great Patriotic War, city residents petitioned the authorities for the return of the shrine. The opening of the church took place in October 1944.

The next attraction, also worthy of attention, is the Kirsanovsky Assumption Cathedral. Its predecessor was located between Krasnoarmeyskaya and Raboche-Krestyanskaya streets, however, it was demolished. Only in 2000 did the construction of a new cathedral begin.

The Kirsanovsky Museum of Local Lore has been operating since the 20s of the last century. It is located in a historic building from the mid-19th century. Built in 1860, this house belonged to a wealthy merchant Mityaev. He subsequently converted it into a merchant's club. At the turn of the last century, theatrical performances were staged here, various Russian celebrities performed, among whom was even the singer Fyodor Chaliapin. After the revolution, the building was adapted for meetings of workers, peasants and Red Army soldiers.

In the museum you can learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the area and the region. Among other things, they will tell you about “Antonovshchina”. Although this year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of peasant resistance to the merciless surplus appropriation of the communists, this topic is still painful for Kirsanov, since the city was the epicenter of the peasant uprising, which divided the townspeople into those who were for the Bolsheviks and those who were against.

The bloody measures taken against the peasantry by the chairman of the Tambov provincial executive committee, Schlichter, in 1920 led to the growth of the rebellion. It was suppressed with the involvement of the Red Army no less bloodily only the next year.

The Kirsanovsky Museum of Local Lore has several departments: historical, natural and artistic. One of the premises is reserved for an exhibition hall. The total number of exhibits in the fund is 20 thousand storage units. Collections of watches and furniture from past centuries are of particular value. Interesting are the collections of memorial items that belonged to the Boratynsky family, the poet Zhemchuzhnikov and other rarities.

Historical monuments also include memorial buildings: a mass grave for those killed in the Civil War and a monument to the Kirsanovites who fell in the Great Patriotic War.

The mass grave of the Red Army soldiers who participated in the suppression of the Antonov rebellion is, as it should be, located on Revolution Square. The wooden obelisk of 1922 was replaced a few years later with a stone one. And in 1967, a sculpture of a Civil War soldier was installed over the grave.

The Kirsanovites erected a monument to their fallen fellow countrymen during the Great Patriotic War in 1988. The townspeople fought on all fronts, took part in the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress, in significant battles near Moscow, Stalingrad, and on the Kursk Bulge. A monument was unveiled to those who heroically fought and fell in that war. 1300 names were immortalized on it. But the years passed, search work was carried out, various archives were brought up. As a result, the list of losses amounted to 2185 names. For a city with a population of 16,600 people, this is an impressive figure.

Thanks to the assistance of the Russian Military Historical Society and the Tambov Regional Duma, the reconstruction of the memorial took place. And in 2018 it was reopened. The result was a powerful, impressive monument.

RVIO presented the city with a three-meter sculpture created by the famous Russian sculptor Denis Stretovich. The figure of the officer was installed on a pedestal, at the foot of which the star of the Eternal Flame was placed. Behind the monument to the Defender of the Fatherland, two vertical pylons were erected with the Order of the Great Patriotic War at the top and 17 individual memorial plates to 12 Kirsanovites - Heroes of the Soviet Union - and five full holders of the Order of Glory. The total height of the monument was ten meters. All city patriotic events now take place at the majestic memorial.
