11 places in Krasnoyarsk that were the city's main attractions a hundred years ago

Category: Museums and monuments

Founded in 1628 as a fort to protect the eastern borders of Russia by governor A. Dubensky, today Krasnoyarsk is the administrative center of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. This is one of the largest ancient cities in Siberia, which is rightfully considered the economic, educational and cultural center of Eastern Siberia. There are many attractions concentrated here, including many monuments, including quite original ones.

Monument to the founder of Krasnoyarsk Andrey Dubensky

And first of all, having arrived in Krasnoyarsk, it is worth visiting the monument to its founder - governor Andrei Dubensky, installed on Pokrovskaya Mountain, above the Yenisei River, in the place where the Kacha River flows into it. According to legend, it was after seeing this place – “high and red” – that Andrei Dubensky decided to found a fort, giving the city the name Krasny Yar. Since 2002, the bronze sculpture of the governor, made by sculptor Vladimir Girich and architect Mikhail Merkulov, has been beautifully illuminated at night.

Chapel of Paraskeva Friday

Another eternal symbol of Krasnoyarsk, without which the excursion is incomplete at any time and in any century. The history of the chapel dates back to the 17th century, when the first founding Cossacks built an observation tower on this site to repel raids by the Yenisei Kyrgyz. Then, at the beginning of the 19th century, a wooden chapel appeared on the site of the tower, and in 1855, on the initiative of the gold miner Kuznetsov, the wood was replaced by stone. The exceptionally beautiful view of the city and the Yenisei has always made the chapel a must-visit.

By the way, during the trip they would definitely tell you about the famous artist Vasily Surikov, who loved to paint views from Karaulnaya Mountain. The last time he was here was after the death of his wife, having lived in the city from 1888 to 1890. At this time, he painted the painting “The Capture of a Snowy Town,” which was awarded a personalized medal at the same Paris exhibition. It seems that 1900 was the true year of Krasnoyarsk triumph.

Monument to internationalist soldiers in Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk residents also cherish the memory of their heroic fellow countrymen who died in international wars.

This is evidenced by the memorial, installed in 1994 on Poklonnaya Hill with public money and restored in 2005. Its authors are architect Sergei Gerashchenko and sculptor Boris Musat.

In the center of the memorial there is a sculpture of a young Siberian guy in a soldier's uniform, above which a memorial arch rises. Nearby there is an airborne combat vehicle - an armored personnel carrier monument, and the names of Krasnoyarsk residents who died in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Chechnya and Karabakh are carved on the memorial plaques.

Krasnoyarsk: history and attractions.

Krasnoyarsk is one of the oldest cities in Siberia. It was founded in 1628 by a detachment of Cossacks led by Andrei Dubensky as a military fort. Initially the settlement was called Krasny Yar, which means “Beautiful Coast”. Krasnoyarsk received city status in 1690, when Siberia was finally annexed to Russia. In 1822, the Yenisei province was created by royal decree, and Krasnoyarsk became its center. In the 18th century, Krasnoyarsk grew from a military fortress into a medium-sized Siberian city.

Krasnoyarsk history of the city.

A turning point in the history of the city was the construction of the Great Siberian Railway in 1895, which connected Krasnoyarsk with the center of Russia. Then the railway station and the famous bridge over the Yenisei were built, and Krasnoyarsk became the largest transport hub in Siberia. In the 19th century, the city became a place of exile for the Decembrists. Educational and cultural institutions are opened, its own newspaper begins to be published, thanks to which the city receives the status of one of the cultural capitals of Siberia.

Krasnoyarsk in modern times.

Today, almost four centuries after its founding, Krasnoyarsk is a large industrial, transport, scientific, cultural and sports center of Eastern Siberia, the capital of the second largest region of our country. There are 150 large and medium-sized enterprises operating in the city. Moreover, for a number of years Krasnoyarsk has been recognized as one of the most comfortable cities in Russia.

Krasnoyarsk attractions.

Despite its status as an industrial and economic center, Krasnoyarsk is also known for its attractions. You've definitely seen at least two of them: the 10-ruble bill depicts the Chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa and the Communal Bridge over the Yenisei. All you have to do to look at them is open your wallet. But we’ll tell you what else interesting there is in Krasnoyarsk.

Krasnoyarsk Pillars

The city is distinguished by unique landscapes, mountain views, a mighty Siberian forest and the famous Stolby nature reserve. It represents exotic rocky elevations among the taiga in the spurs of the Eastern Sayan Mountains. The reserve is located 3 kilometers from the outskirts of Krasnoyarsk, but the impressions are worth making the journey here. The pillars are famous throughout the world and are one of the symbols of the city.

Krasnoyarsk Flora and Fauna Park "Roev Ruchey"

This is one of the largest zoos in Russia. Bears, wolves, lynxes, sables, wolverines, foxes, squirrels, birds of prey, swans, geese, ducks and many other representatives of the Siberian fauna live here. The zoo has an aquaterrarium. Turtles, crocodiles, piranhas and other inhabitants of the aquatic world are based here. In the center there is a pool with reef sharks. Their feeding looks especially impressive. Address: st. Sverdlovskaya, 93

Krasnoyarsk Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel

The Orthodox Chapel of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa was built on the top of Karaulnaya Mountain. As we have already said, she is depicted on the front side of the Russian 10 ruble banknote. The octagonal chapel with a hipped roof was created in the 19th century. Before this, there was a wooden chapel here, which, according to legend, was built by a merchant who almost drowned and decided to immortalize his salvation. From the chapel you can see a magnificent panorama of Krasnoyarsk. There is also a cannon nearby, which fires a ceremonial salvo every noon. Address: st. Stepana Razina, 51a

Krasnoyarsk Central Park

In the historical center of the city, Central Park is a favorite walking place for city residents and visitors. The park has rides, a Ferris wheel, and the Krasnoyarsk Children's Railway. Address: Revolution Square

Krasnoyarsk Theater Square

The main fountain of the city is located here. Water jets, combined with music and light, create a picture that is often captured in photographs of tourists. In the dark, the fountain is illuminated by approximately 600 multi-colored lamps. On the lower terrace of Theater Square there is a cascading fountain “Rivers of Siberia”. His composition is a dance of small rivers of the Krasnoyarsk Territory around one large Yenisei. While on the square, you will not pass by the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theater. In addition, the main city holidays take place here, so if you come here on a holiday, you are very lucky. And if you like tranquility, you can just sit on a bench and admire another city symbol, the local “Big Ben” (the clock tower, which is part of the city hall).

Train Station.

Krasnoyarsk railway station

This is the main railway station of Krasnoyarsk. In 2004, the station building and the adjacent square were renovated, and since then they are simply unrecognizable. Now the station is considered one of the most beautiful not only in the Trans-Urals, but throughout Russia. There are fountains on the station square, and in the center of the square there is a 16-meter stele, which is proudly crowned with a lion, the heraldic symbol of Krasnoyarsk. Address: st. July 30, 1

Museum of Local Lore.

Museums of Krasnoyarsk

If you walk along the Yenisei embankment, behind the Communal Bridge you will see the beautiful building of the Museum of Local Lore (Dubrovinsky St., 84). In the Krasnoyarsk Museum Center (Mira Square, 1) you will probably find some interesting exhibitions, which are held here in large numbers. And here you can touch lightning, wrap yourself in a huge blanket and do a lot of other things that seem impossible. We will also highlight the Surikov Art Museum. There are so many paintings in his collections that three branches were opened for them: st. Paris Commune, 20, Mira Ave., 12 and others named after. Newspapers "Krasnoyarsky Rabochiy", 68. And the Literary Museum (Lenin St., 66), the building of which combines Gothic and wooden Art Nouveau, will allow you to see unique documents of writers and poets of the golden age of Russian literature.

Museum-ship "St. Nicholas"

This paddle steamer was considered the fastest in the 19th century. Today it is not used for its intended purpose, but stands on the Yenisei embankment. In 1891, the future Russian Emperor Nicholas II arrived in Krasnoyarsk on this ship. In 1897, a more interesting story happened to the ship: it was on it that Vladimir Lenin was sent into exile. Now on the ship there are exhibitions on various topics: the life of Lenin, the Great Patriotic War, the War of 1812 and others. It will also be interesting for children: you can take the helm, walk around the deck and ring the bell. Address: Mira Square, 1a

Memorial complex of Victor Astafiev

The village of Ovsyanka is located 26 kilometers from Krasnoyarsk. You can come here by bus, which goes from the bus station to Divnogorsk. And it’s worth getting here in order to visit the homeland of Viktor Astafiev, a Russian literary classic of the 20th century. Here you can see the church in which the future writer was baptized and visit the memorial complex. It consists of Astafiev’s house, built by himself, as well as the estate of his grandmother, who raised him from the age of 7. Address: s. Ovsyanka, st. Shchetinkina, 26

Monument to the artist A. G. Pozdeev

Krasnoyarsk residents also remember their famous fellow countrymen. Among them is Andrey Pozdeev. A bronze sculpture of this talented artist was unveiled on Mira Avenue in 2000. Its authors, architect Mikhail Merkulov and Pozdeev’s personal friend, sculptor Yuri Zlotya, depicted the artist walking down the street with an easel on his shoulder and an open umbrella over his head. It is noteworthy that the handle of the umbrella that the artist is holding, as well as his nose, are rubbed to a shine, and all because Krasnoyarsk students are sure: if you rub the sculpture in the designated places, you will definitely be lucky in the exam! Guests of the city also believe in this sign.

By the way, they are rubbing the nose of another city sculpture - a clown.

Monument to Uncle Yasha and the intern

The original sculpture with the no less original name “Uncle Yasha and the Intern” appeared in 2003 near the water utility building in honor of the 90th anniversary of the water utility. It is noteworthy that this sculptural composition was created based on a famous joke and in 2005 even became the winner of the All-Russian competition “The Funniest Monument”.

City Garden

They would definitely take you to the City Garden. No wonder the guide to Siberia and Asian possessions called it the best not only in Siberia, but also in Russia in general. You'll have to pay 10 kopecks to enter, but it's worth it.

The park was much larger then; there were no cafes or attractions, but there were a huge number of trees. Dubrovinsky Street has not yet cut it off from the Yenisei embankment, and the merchant Polyakov has not yet eaten away a significant piece of green space for the construction of the future Luch cinema.

However, the territory has already begun to shrink. In 1855, a piece of the garden was given for the construction of the Seminary. This building still stands and is now a military hospital.

Monument to the designer

However, probably the most interesting of all the “professional monuments” in Krasnoyarsk is the monument to the designer, installed near the building of the printing company. The fact is that the designer himself is not in the composition. According to the sculpture’s customers, at the time of its opening he was simply sleeping. But the viewers are presented with his workplace, in which every detail matters: the mouse that has settled in the processor, the cup of coffee on the table, and the desk lamp, as a symbol of the fact that people in this profession have to work at night.

You can see other equally interesting monuments in Krasnoyarsk that have become a landmark of the city.

Among them, it is undoubtedly worth highlighting the sculpture “Men with a Dog,” popularly called “Uncle Vasya the Drunkard.”

Steamship Saint Nicholas

Another object that you would probably be shown. “Saint Nicholas” is the pride of the Yenisei flotilla. The fastest and most comfortable ship in all of Siberia. It was built by the merchant Sibiryakov in 1886, and by the time you met him, both passengers who made it famous had already climbed onto its deck. In 1891, “Saint Nicholas” brought Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich, the future Nicholas II, to Krasnoyarsk, and in 1897 he sent Vladimir Lenin into exile in Shushenskaya.

Lenin's glory allowed the ship to survive to this day. After the revolution, it was first renamed “Nicholas”, deprived of its holiness, and then demoted to oil barges. And in 1960 they were sent to the ship’s cemetery. And only the approaching 100th anniversary of the leader of the proletariat forced the authorities to restore the ship and turn it into a museum, which “St. Nicholas” remains today.

Sculpture of a Man with a Dog

This original sculptural composition, which actually depicts a drunk man leaning on a pillar, is installed on the so-called “Lovers' Square”. It has long become a favorite place for Krasnoyarsk residents. Especially, for some reason, Krasnoyarsk brides.

Krasnoyarsk newlyweds also love other sophisticated urban sculptural compositions.
