13 most interesting places in the Crimean village of Gurzuf with photos and descriptions

Gurzuf is a small cozy village on the southern coast of Crimea, located between Yalta and Alushta near the bear-mountain Ayu-Dag.

The village is very compact; you can get around its main attractions in just a few hours. Therefore, we recommend looking here if you are traveling to Yalta, Livadia, Alupka, Miskhor, Simeiz or Foros along the South Coast Highway, and even more so if you are vacationing in Alushta, Yalta or Partenit.

Our editors have prepared for you a list of places, having visited which, you can confidently say that I have seen all the sights of Gurzuf . We tried to arrange this review in the form of a convenient route, following which all the interesting places in the village will be “along the way” for you and you will save as much time as possible. Let's begin!

If you are driving by car past Alushta in the direction of Yalta, you need to pass the bridge over the Avunda River above Gurzuf, after the white chapel on the right hand, change into the left lane and turn left from the highway onto the Gurzuf Highway, along which we will begin our descent to the village. After 300 meters on the left hand there will be a panoramic observation deck “Echo's Gazebo”, where, if desired, you can take a couple of views of Gurzuf and Mount Ayu-Dag. Then our task is to go down the main road and, before reaching the “Vesely Hotei” hotel, turn left following the signs for “Embankment” and “Pushkino”. Find a parking space at the Smak grocery store and walk to the embankment - you won’t need a car any further

The first place from which we will begin our acquaintance with Gurzuf is located right in the middle of the embankment, behind the gates with 33 heroes of the Pushkino sanatorium - this is the Gurzuf Pushkin Museum:

Adalary rocks - pier of broken ships in Gurzuf

  • Coordinates: 44.542563, 34.295457.

The twin rocks are located in the sea, 300 m from the shore. They are especially beautiful at sunset, which turns them purple. Against the backdrop of the blue sea, the photo of the Gurzuf landmark looks amazing. It is very popular among divers - ships have crashed here more than once in the past, colliding with rock formations. Divers found a lot of valuables at the bottom of Adalar. The famous remnants are also loved by fishermen; no one has ever left here without a catch: mullet, horse mackerel, and flounder literally jump on the hook themselves.

Natural attractions of Gurzuf that are worth visiting

On the southern coast of Crimea there are many interesting places created by nature without human intervention. Coves, unusual rocks, and beaches attract the attention of numerous tourists at all times of the year.

Ayu-Dag

The name of the mountain comes from the Turkic “ayu” - bear and “dag” - mountain. Bear Mountain is visible from everywhere; it is located at the very edge of the sea. Located at an altitude of 577 m above sea level. The length is 2.5 km, the width is 1.5 km. Consists of frozen magma. Since 1947, it has been a protected area, on the territory of which excursions for geologists and biologists are regularly held.

According to legend, Ayu-dag, a ferocious bear who brought a lot of trouble, once lived here. One day he bent down to drink water. The gods bewitched him for his misdeeds and turned him into a stone mountain.

Adalary

300 m from the shore there are two small rocks. The basis of their name is the Turkic “ada” - island. Their name literally translates as “islands”. They rise 35 and 48 m above sea level. Previously, they were connected by an isthmus to the land, but over time the sea eroded the bridge. You can get to them by yacht or ship.

Adalary - attractions and entertainment of Gurzuf at the same time. Diving enthusiasts love to dive near the islands. Sometimes they find interesting things. Ships once crashed here. Fishermen love to spend time here. A good catch of mullet, mackerel and other fish is guaranteed. Adalary is visible from Gurzufskaya embankment.

Pushkin's Rock

The stone block is located next to Chaliapin's rock. The height is 35 m. It is notable for the sculptures of heroes of A.S. Pushkin’s fairy tales located along the entire path. There is an observation deck at the top. From here you can see the Black Sea and coastal mountains.

Below it is the Pushkin Grotto. You can get down the mountain by boat or yacht. These attractions of Gurzuf are located on the territory of the Artek camp.

Shalyapin's Rock

F.I. Chaliapin often visited the mountain village. Seeing the rock, the idea came to his mind to build a castle of arts here. The singer asked the owner of the land O.M. Solovyov to sell him the plot. At first she refused, but when she heard the singer’s strong voice while performing the songs, she drew up a bill of sale for a nominal fee.

The revolution and war forced the singer to emigrate, his plans did not come true. They managed to build a passage in the form of a bridge on the rock. The stone block rises 40 m above the sea. There is a rock on the embankment, opposite Adalar.

Rock Red Stone

The highest point of the stone block rises above sea level at an altitude of 400 m. On its surface there is a platform, length - 120 m, width - 50 m. Along the edges of the rock there are steep slopes. You can climb along a narrow path from the northern part of the mountain.

The rock was a lookout point during the reign of the Crimean Tatars. It offers a beautiful view of Ayu-Dag, the sea, other attractions of Gurzuf and the surrounding area. Red Stone is located in the village of Krasnokamenka.

Fountain Goddess of the Night - the flowing splendor of the city

  • Address: Leningradskaya street.

This sculpture was purchased especially for the Gurzuf Park in 1889 at the Vienna exhibition by the famous entrepreneur P.I. Gubonin. The naked goddess Nikta with a torch in her hands is located in the center of the composition, with the gods of love and sleep Eros and Hypnos on the sides. Under the feet of the deity a starry firmament with images of the signs of the zodiac is revealed. The entire structure is held by Atlanteans with fish in their hands, from whose mouths jets of water flow. At night, the fountain is illuminated.

Gurzuf Park

Gurzuf Park is a magnificent landscape and architectural monument in the coastal part of the village, founded back in 1808, and to which one of the best park designers of that time, Karl Kebakh (best known for his work on Vorontsov Park in Alupka) had a hand.

Time to visit : ~1-1.5 hours • cost : from 100 ₽

Gurzuf Park, of course, is not as diverse as the botanical garden in Nikita, but it is very well maintained and abounds with a mass of rare exotic plants brought here from Africa, Asia, America and Australia. Here you can find cedars, magnolia, sequoiadendron, cypress, fan palm, boxwood, edible chestnut, ironwood, juniper, pistachio, yew, strawberry, dogwood and even agave. The park has many examples of topiary art (artistic cutting of plants).

But the advantages of the park are not limited to the amazing flora - magnificent examples of architecture are scattered throughout its territory: these are the most beautiful fountains “Goddess of the Night” (pictured above), Rachel and the “Bather”, an alley of busts of Mayakovsky, Chekhov, Chaliapin, Pushkin and Gorky. The buildings of the Gurzufsky sanatorium, located on the territory of the park, are also of considerable interest:

As we have already mentioned, the buildings of the Gurzufsky and Pushkino sanatoriums are now located on the territory of the park, so to enter it you will need to pay 100 rubles at the entrance of the Gurzufsky sanatorium (located on the embankment side). Entrance as part of an excursion group with a guide will cost 200 ₽

By the way, do you know that you can get 20% back for a vacation in Crimea as part of the Rostourism promotion?

Ayu-Dag - antiquity come to life in the photo

  • Coordinates: 44.558079, 34.334185.

Ayu-Dag is the most famous extinct volcano on the Crimean peninsula. The sights of Gurzuf are more than 150 million years old. It is often called Bear Mountain because of its peculiar shape, reminiscent of a huge animal drinking sea water. The entire hill is covered with dense forests; centuries-old trees and rare plants from the Red Book are found here.

Attractions in the vicinity of Gurzuf

There are several interesting places outside of Gurzuf - mostly natural attractions, but there are also man-made ones.

Gazebo of the winds

A famous attraction among tourists is located about 5 km from Gurzuf - on Mount Shaan-Kaya. It was installed in 1956 almost on the very edge of a rocky cliff. The structure is built on a high stone foundation. A six-step staircase leads inside.

The gazebo is surrounded by a balcony and decorated with a dome supported by 8 columns. The floor is paved with a mosaic illustrating a compass rose - hence the unusual name. The structure is unusually high - 6 m, and due to its large diameter, more than 10 people can fit inside at the same time.

The area around the gazebo is part of a protected area - you cannot litter or pick plants in the area.

Nikitskaya Cleft

The Nikitskaya Cleft geological monument is a large crack in the limestone rock. Its width in some places reaches 30 meters, and its depth – up to 50. It stretches for more than 200 m, winding along its way. Lianas, pines, ivy, oak, pistachio, and rowan grow on the cliffs.

Overhanging the crevice are rocks cut with cracks and small grottoes. All “walls” have a different shade: beige, gray, black. The bottom is covered with stone blocks, and between them there is a path to the upper exit.

In this tract, the remains of dishes from ancient tribes that once lived here were found.

Ayan rocks (this is the second name of the crevice) are located in the village of Nikita, on the Gurzuf - Yalta route. There is a dirt road leading to them with a barrier, near which you can park your car. From here to the entrance - 200 m, walk about 5 minutes.

Bear Mountain

The most famous mountain of Crimea, with the official name Ayu-Dag, “looks” towards the sea and in shape really resembles a bear. The peak is located between Big Alushta and Big Yalta. The relief formation cuts into the water for more than 2 km.

Squirrels, badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, and hares live on the slopes of Bear Mountain. The flora is no less diverse: ash, rowan, hornbeam, oak, rose hip, maple, dogwood, juniper. Of the 577 plant species, 44 are listed in the Red Book. Ayu-Dag is a state nature reserve of republican significance.

There are many hiking trails leading to the top, but the most popular is the road from the village of Lavrovoe and Partenit near the Crimea sanatorium.

Bridge over Avunda: a magical panorama of the village

  • Coordinates: 44.544741, 34.273946.

The Gurzuf River Avunda originates at an altitude of 1000 m above sea level and is only 8 km long, but along its entire length you can see incredibly picturesque surroundings. After World War II, a reinforced concrete structure was built over it, along which today a busy highway passes. The bridge offers magnificent views of the sea coast and the town.

Big Yalta has captivated many people, one of them is the great Russian singer Fyodor Chaliapin. Having come here one day to visit his friend, he simply fell in love with Gurzuf and got the idea to build a house here. At first he liked Adalary, but soon, after meeting the rich widow O. Solovyova, he set his sights on the rock, then known as Pushkinskaya. The owner did not give it up to Chaliapin for a long time, but after his wonderful singing she gave in and, as they say, sold it for a symbolic price of 1 ruble.

Mount Ayu-Dag (Bear Mountain)

Mount Ayu-Dag, 577 meters high, separates Big Alushta and Big Yalta. In appearance, it resembles a bear coming to a watering hole. This is where the name of the mountain came from. Local residents even have several legends explaining its origin. According to one of them, the evil predator ended up in these parts completely by accident, and he was so struck by the beauty of these places that he decided to stay here forever. He lay down at the pond to drink water, and since then he has never risen: the god of the sea turned him into a block of stone.

Bear Mountain is of interest not only to lovers of folklore legends; Ayu-Dag is studied by a variety of scientists. The fact is that there are archaeological monuments here: the ruins of fortress walls and temple buildings. Geologists, examining the mountain, came to the conclusion that it does not consist of ordinary limestone, but of durable igneous gabbrodiabase, i.e. Bear Mountain is an unformed or already extinct volcano. Botanists and zoologists are also studying this area, because more than 600 plant species have already been discovered on Ayu-Dag, and of all the animal species living on the mountain, 16 are listed in the Red Book.

The new cathedral is very similar to its predecessor - the same majestic domes, stone carvings and rich interior decoration.

There are almost always clouds circling above the memo – an amazing sight. Photos of Gurzuf sights turn out incredibly impressive.

The building has a dome with a sharp spire. A compass rose in the form of a mosaic is built into the floor. The wind speed here is rarely less than 45 m/s.

Gurzuf Park

In the town itself, dozens of unusual plants grow on an area of 12 hectares. Osmanthus, yew, cypress, yew, cedar, laurel - this is an incomplete list of representatives of the park flora. Walking around the park, you can explore the famous sights of Gurzuf on your own.

There are many sculptures and fountains on its territory. The statue “Bather” is a copy of a girl from a Rembrandt painting.

The “Night” fountain was purchased by one of the owners of Gurzuf Gubonin in 1898 at an exhibition in Vienna. The goddess of the night Nikta holds a torch in her hands, illuminating the sky. To her left is the god of love, to her right is the god of sleep. Below them are Atlases and caryatids holding fish. Jets of water shoot out of their mouths, trying to extinguish the flames in Nikta's hands.

The Rachel fountain is reminiscent of the biblical story of Jacob's love for Rachel. The statue was installed in 1890 at the direction of Gubonin.

A.S. Pushkin spent only a few weeks in the town, but to this day there are still many places associated with his name - a museum, a rock, a grotto and, oddly enough, an ordinary tree. The poet took a liking to the young cypress tree; he even wrote to a friend about his affection for the tree. Perhaps it was he who inspired Pushkin to one of his great works.

Adalara Rocks

White stone monoliths protruding from the Black Sea are a symbol of Gurzuf. They were once part of the coast, but over time they were cut off from the land due to tectonic movements. They got their name from the Turkish “adalary”, which means “islands”.

There are many legends associated with the rocks. One of the legends says that two rich brothers, George and Peter, used to live in these places. They wanted to win the love of two sisters, took them on a horse ride to get to the Sun, and almost got burned. The next day they decided to disturb the peace of the sea deity. And he cruelly repaid them for this, turning the riders and their horses into sharp rocks.

Divers of these places also have their own legend about countless treasures left over from shipwrecks and resting on the bottom of the sea near Adalar. In ancient times, the islands were a pier when they were still connected to the land by a bridge, so there are still wrecks and fragments of ships in the depths of the sea. In recent decades, amateur divers have actually managed to find amphorae from the 12th-16th centuries and other valuable things here.
