Zadonsk is one of the spiritual centers of Russia. List of the most interesting places

Zadonsk is one of the spiritual centers of Russia. This is a very small provincial town in the Lipetsk region. When you get here, it’s like you’re transported back a couple of centuries. From all sides you can see the domes of temples, majestically rising above the residential area of the city. There are practically no high-rise buildings here. Walking through the streets of the city, you can sometimes see old two-story houses. They were built back in the 19th century. The lower part is solid, stone. Previously, such premises housed various shops, and even now you can see small shops or pharmacies. The second floor was usually residential and was built of wood. You look at such a house and think that a plump-looking merchant, or maybe a clerk, is about to emerge from it. Having looked around the adjacent street, he takes a watch on a chain from the breast pocket of his vest and presses a small button on the side. Immediately some classical melody will play and the watch cover will open, revealing a white dial. The man shakes his head, complaining about the time that has passed so quickly, and returns to the shop. The appearance of Zadonsk seems to have passed through centuries and brought to us a piece of a long-forgotten time.

    Zadonsky St. Tikhon's Transfiguration Convent

The convent was founded in 1865. In 1873, the monastery officially received its status. In 1920, the monastery was destroyed. Subsequently, a psychoneurological boarding school was opened in the surviving building. The territory of the church was returned only in 1991. The female monastic community began to revive the monastery. The first Liturgy in the monastery took place 4 months after the start of restoration work. This monastery is considered the pearl of these places. It is located on a high wooded hill 7 km from the city of Zadonsk. Today, about 100 nuns live in the monastery. In addition to spiritual service, the sisters work in the vast monastery courtyard and are engaged in social activities.

    2. Revered icon of the Iveron Mother of God.
    3. Bleeding Crucifixion of the Trinity Church.
    4. Renewed images of the Mother of God “It is Worthy to Eat” and “Seeking the Lost.”
    5. The incorrupt relics of the first monastery inhabitants.
    6. Holy spring.

St. Tikhon's Transfiguration Monastery is located in a quiet, picturesque wooded area and is a center of pilgrimage.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Assumption Church is considered one of the most beautiful religious buildings in Zadonsk. The foundation of the cathedral was laid in 1797, and 3 years later the first service was held in the finished church. The temple complex consists of a church, a three-tiered bell tower and a one-story refectory. Located in the city center. But, unfortunately, the temple was not always used for its intended purpose. In 1917, after the change of government, a local history museum was opened in the building. The temple was returned to believers exactly 80 years later in 1997. The classical-style ensemble was recognized as a cultural heritage site of federal significance.

The stone cathedral was built in 1679 at the expense of Tsar Feodor Alekseevich. It is decorated with unique frescoes that were preserved during the years of devastation. At the end of 1925 the cathedral was closed. From 1960 to 1990, the cathedral housed the sculpture restoration department of the All-Union Art Scientific and Restoration Center named after I.E. Grabar. In 1991, the miraculously preserved Cathedral of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was returned to the Church and acted as a parish church. In 1993, a courtyard of the Holy Dormition Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery was opened here, transformed in 1995 into the Sretensky Stavropegic Monastery. Today the cathedral contains ancient icons, such as the icon of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The unique and inimitable Zadonsk Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery was founded in the period from 1610 to 1620. During revolutionary times, the monastery fell into disrepair, and the Soviet government placed a cannery on its territory. Only in the 1990s. the lands were returned to the church, reconstruction began. At the moment, the architectural buildings of the monastery have been preserved and reconstructed. Vladimir Cathedral, the main temple of the monastery, has restored its grandeur, and every day it sounds with sacred words and prayers.

    Kudykina mountain

The natural park of wonders is located on the banks of the Don. This amazing place was founded in 2009. What can you find in this place? Guests of the park are greeted by a giant 15-meter sculpture of Gorynych. At a certain time, this fairy-tale villain literally comes to life and all three of his heads spew out terrifying flames. You can watch this show during the winter season on Saturday and Sunday, as well as on holidays at 18.00.

The most important feature is that this amazing place is home to rare animals - the safari park is home to dozens of wild animals. In addition to the zoo, Kudykina Gora has many playgrounds, art objects and wooden sculptures.

    Reserve "Galichya Mountain"

"Galichya Mountain" is the smallest nature reserve in the world, which was included in the Guinness Book of Records. Its size is very small, only 230 hectares.

The territory covered by the reserve is divided into six sections located along the banks of the Don and its tributaries. These are Galichya Gora, Morozova Gora, Voronov Kamen, Vorgolskoye, Plyushchan and Bykova Sheya.

Galichya Mountain is a different, unusual, unique place; the laws of botany are not important to it. A unique storehouse of knowledge for researchers and scientists in various fields. On the territory you can see many valuable representatives of the flora, visit the bird of prey nursery, see collections of plants, insects and mushrooms, visit caves and a chrysanthemum meadow.

    Under Peter

During the time of the reformer emperor, the territory now occupied by the city of Zadonsk served as a source of building materials for the Voronezh shipyard. Residents of the surrounding villages mined ore for railway factories and wove sails. This is where the names of some surrounding villages come from. For example, Parusnoye, which is a few kilometers from the city of Zadonsk.

Peter often visited here while passing through, on his way from Moscow to Voronezh. In 1700, the city of Zadonsk became a postal station. The coachman trade and blacksmithing began to develop, inns arose, and trade in agricultural products expanded.

Natural attractions in the vicinity of Zadonsk

Arriving in Zadonsk, we recommend that you also visit areas with natural attractions. Not far from the mourning church there is a tall, mighty oak tree, which is famous for its unique story, which tells that when the owners of the house decided to cut down a 300-year-old tree, the old oak suddenly began to sing. The villagers who heard this were amazed and could not believe their ears when the melodies of church chants flowed from the bark of the tree. After this amazing event, residents never again try to get rid of the old-timer tree.

It is also worth visiting the source of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, which is located next to the Transfiguration Monastery. It beats among green trees and is revered as a shrine. The cleanest spring has been landscaped, and a bathhouse has been built next to it with separate entrances for men and women.

    Monument to Mother

In the Victory Park of the city of Zadonsk there is a “Monument to the Mother”. It was installed in memory of Maria Matveevna Frolova, who lost eight sons during the Great Patriotic War. In the center of the composition is a sculpture of a grieving mother, and around there are eight obelisks with the names: Mikhail, Dmitry, Konstantin, Tikhon, Vasily, Leonid, Nikolai and Peter. The brothers gave their lives for our Motherland, for a life outside slavery to foreign invaders. Victory in this war came at a very high cost.

    Zadonsk, monument to Maria Frolova

How can you measure a mother's grief? There is probably no such measure on earth. No one knows how Maria Matveevna was able to bear this burden. She lived to be 96 years old and thought about her sons all the time. In every neighbor boy running past her house she saw her Mitenka, Kolenka or Vasenka. I remembered how they ran along the street like that, playing simple children’s games. Years passed, but my heart was still heavy. At the cost of enormous efforts, she forced herself to live on.

Sometimes Maria Matveevna sat at the table in front of the window. Taking out a bag with old faded photographs and letters from her sons from the front, already worn to holes, she recalled her past life. They got married to Georgy Ignatievich even before the revolution (before October 1917). He was 20 years older than his wife. In his youth, Georgy worked as a clerk, and then opened a small shop. Already a sedate forty-year-old man, he noticed Maria and proposed to marry him. The family turned out to be good. Maria always obeyed her husband. It never even occurred to her to try to command her husband. Therefore, harmony and calm reigned in their family. They did not live richly, although they worked “tirelessly.” They gave all their strength to “put the children on their feet,” and as many as fourteen were born. True, two died in infancy. But they raised two daughters and ten sons. Many of them went to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). They studied, received professions and at the same time worked in factories. They were allocated places in dormitories and paid salaries. In general, there was enough work for everyone, just come and work at any enterprise. In difficult times for the country, they left this city for the front. Of all the brothers, only two remained alive - Alexey and Mitrofan. Alexey worked at a defense plant and was an almost irreplaceable specialist. He bombarded the military registration and enlistment office with applications asking to be released to the front, but the plant director personally canceled them all. Mitrofan, due to his young age, managed to fight in the last year of the war and returned to Leningrad. The youngest of the sisters, Anna, lived with her mother in Zadonsk. Even before the war, her brothers asked her not to leave her mother and to help in everything. The eldest Antonina lived through the entire war in hungry, besieged Leningrad.

Georgy Ignatievich died in 1941, one month before the start of the war. Maria Matveevna, having learned about the German attack, immediately thought: “All of our people will go to the front.” It couldn't be any other way. The brothers loved their country, their parents, relatives and friends. Even in a nightmare, they could not imagine that some Germans would use their loved ones as free labor, like ordinary slaves, and shoot them for any offense.

War is the hardest test for people. She is not at all like what they show in feature films. War is much tougher, rougher and more terrible. The writer Viktor Astafiev, who went through it as a simple ordinary soldier, spoke very truthfully about that time. In one of his interviews, he said that it was incredibly scary for absolutely everyone, regardless of positions and titles. During air raids, people tried to find at least some kind of crack, squeeze into it and freeze. “Maybe this time it will blow through and the bomb won’t hit here,” each of them thought. In the face of death, everyone (both believers and non-believers) remembered God. People crossed themselves as best they could and from all sides they heard: “Lord, help...”. Many millions of people fell into the millstones of war. She also took the eight children of Maria Matveevna Frolova. This monument is a reminder to those living today of the dire consequences of the war.

Beautiful parks in Zadonsk and Zadonsk region

There are many places for walking and active recreation in the Zadonsk region. We recommend visiting Victory Park, dedicated to the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War. Forest Park, which has all the conditions for sports, games and active recreation, is considered popular in the Lipetsk region. Near the village of Kashary there is another wonderful park called “Clouds”. It is equipped with a climbing wall and a ropes course. In addition, it offers rare entertainment - tank battle, dry-tooling and troll descent.

    Early 20th century

At the turn of the century, educational institutions began to open in the city of Zadonsk. There were several small enterprises, including a branch of the Yeletsk tobacco factory of Zausailov. The small town had more than twenty drinking establishments (by the way, there are still quite a few pubs here today).

With the onset of spring, the easy passage of the Lida opened up navigation between the Don station of the south-eastern railway and the city. On Sundays and holidays he went to the monastery of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk.

The Entresol Press Museum is dedicated to the sesquicentennial history of printing in Zadonsk and the entire Lipetsk region. Teshevka

The city of Zadonsk is located in an area that was inhabited in ancient times. Archaeologists here once discovered several settlements of varying degrees of antiquity. The oldest one arose in the last millennia of the Stone Age.

The steppes of the Upper Don region seemed to have been created for cattle breeding, agriculture, and crafts. However, the Pechenegs and Cumans did not allow the local residents to turn around. The steppes turned into a Wild Field.

The city of Zadonsk arose in 1610, but then it was not a city at all, but a settlement of Teshevka, which had previously been formed at the Bogoroditsky Monastery.
