Mozhaisk Sights, photos, what a tourist should see on his own, route around the city

Mentions of the city of Mozhaisk appear in chronicles for the first time in 1231, but it began its existence much earlier. Mozhaisk was a fortress of the Moscow principality on its western borders.

At one time, Mozhaisk was the largest religious center of Muscovy and consisted of 40 streets, 15 settlements, 16 monasteries, 75 churches and 400 shops. The city was the residence of the great princes - Vasily III, Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov. Little has remained of its former splendor, but the city still has interesting places worth visiting.

On the way to Mozhaisk you can stop by several interesting places - Vereya, the Pushkin Museum-Reserve and others - all of them are marked on the map in the article about the sights of the Moscow region.

At the same time, Mozhaisk is located practically on the border of the Smolensk region - there are even more interesting places and cities there.

Two war veterans looked after the main monument and Bagration’s burial place. The house contained a map of the Borodino field and items found on the battlefield.

The main monument to Russian soldiers was erected with the participation of Prince Alexander Nikolaevich, who laid the first stone. True, the first monument was destroyed in 1932, but later it was restored. The same materials were used - bronze with gilding and cast iron.

The city got its name thanks to the Mzhaya (Mozhaika) river; the first mention of it dates back to the 16th century. But in history there are also hydronyms - Mozhai and Mozhaya. Historians suggest that these names are of Baltic origin. The fact is that Mažoji in Lithuanian means “small”. Allegedly, this is the nickname for the small river that flows into the Moscow River.

Mozhaisk was named after a small winding river

Brief history of the city

The first mentions of Mozhaisk date back to 1231. However, historians were able to reconstruct earlier events associated with this city. Archaeologist Kondratyev I.I. suggested that the first princely churchyard was founded in 1097–1113. Subsequently, the original churchyard “grew” into a real fortress. There were already small settlements in the vicinity (Troitskoye and Dolgininskoye fortifications, etc.), but this particular place was chosen by Monomakh for further development.

That same small river played a big role in the history of Mozhaisk. The fact is that Mozhaika, one and a half kilometers from the churchyard, flows into the Mzhut River, and it flows into Protva, and that into the Oka. At that time, an unbroken river route was the most effective method of transport from Chernigov to Moscow.

The first fortress, made of wood and humus, was very small (50 by 50 meters). Elements of this structure were found during excavations and they resembled exactly the same fragments at the site of the founding of Moscow. For this reason, historians are inclined to the hypothesis that Mozhaisk and Moscow were founded together and at approximately the same time. For the 11th - 12th centuries, there were no towers on the walls, so the fortress consisted mainly of a timber wall and a rampart lined with clay. Subsequently, the appearance of the fortress led to feudolization, Christianization and population growth. The Mozhaisk fortress became strong in the 15th-16th centuries, and 7 towers appeared on its walls.

The main development of the city took place from the 11th to the 16th centuries.

Monuments in Mozhaisk

Mozhaisk, whose sights are related to the city's military past, is transformed in May - at this time traditional festive events dedicated to Victory Day take place.

Monument to WWII soldiers

Address: Oktyabrskaya Square. The sculpture of the liberating warrior is located in the central city square. The monument was created in memory of the 50 thousand officers and soldiers who participated and died in the liberation of the Mozhaisk region from the fascist invaders. Behind the monument is the Glory Memorial.

A visit to the memorial with a stop at the sculpture of the Soldier-Liberator to express gratitude and respect to the defenders of the city has become a tradition for local residents and tourists.

Airplane-monument "Yak-3"

Address: Minskoe highway 96 km. The monument was erected at the 96th kilometer of the M1 federal highway, before the turn to Mozhaisk. It is a stele with a Yak-3 aircraft installed on it. The monument was opened in 1966 in honor of the defenders of the Moscow sky.

According to historians, aircraft of this brand did not directly participate in the battle for Moscow; they appeared only in 1943. At the time of installation of the stele, there were no true participants in the battle (Yak-1) left in good condition. Opposite the monument is the Mozhaisk flying club, which provides services for organizing air tours and teaching aerobatic skills.

Monument to military signalmen

Address: Komsomolskaya Square.

The monument to military signalmen is unique, as it is the only monument of its kind. It was installed in 2005 as a sign of gratitude and respect to more than a million signalmen who, during the war, at the risk of their own lives, were engaged in ensuring communications for all allied forces. Made in the form of a stylized insignia of the Signal Corps.

Streets of Mozhaisk

The streets of Mozhaisk today look the same as they did a century ago. The central street of Mozhaisk is Moskovskaya , into which the Minskoye Highway goes. All the main city administrative buildings are located on it, as well as beautiful recreational areas - Leninsky and Bagrationovsky squares .

Borodinskaya Street is interesting for its architectural buildings of past centuries.

A walk along Sergei Gerasimov will take you to the Luzhetsky Monastery, past the house of the famous artist, after whom it is named.

Architectural structures in Mozhaisk

In the second half of the 20th century, active construction began in the city, new residential areas and public facilities appeared. However, some architectural structures that have historical value have been preserved. An example is the Rolle estate.

City estate of Khlebnikov-Rolle

Address: st. Red Partisans, 15/17. The Rolle estate was built on one of the city streets at the beginning of the 20th century. Its first owner was the merchant Leonty Vladimirovich Rolle. According to the owner's instructions, the building was designed in Art Nouveau style. Around the main house there was a large terrace from which there was access to the garden.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of proper funding, there is practically no maintenance for the mansion and surrounding areas. This leads to the inevitable destruction of the building. You won’t be able to walk through the garden and enter the house, but any traveler can see it from the street and have time to capture this piece of history.

Porechye estate (or former estate of the Uvarovs)

  • Address: Mozhaisky district, rural settlement Poretskoye, village Porechye.
  • Phone: 495 992‑99-32.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:15.

The first mentions of the Porechye estate were found in scribe books of the 16th century. The final architectural appearance was formed only in the 19th century, when the daughter of Count Razumovsky and her husband Count Uvarova became the owners. The estate was considered rich, with many valuable works of art stored in the main house.

Most of them were transferred to Moscow museums. The Uvarov estate was badly damaged during the war. In the 70s of the 20th century, the external and internal appearance was partially restored. Currently, free access for tourists, unfortunately, is closed, as there is a sanatorium on the territory.

Goretovo Estate

Address: Mozhaisk urban district, Goretovo village, Bestuzhevo. The Goretovo estate complex is located 20 km from Mozhaisk. This is a noble estate of the 18th century. Part of the territory was flooded during the construction of the Mozhaisk reservoir. On the remaining plot of land, some fragments of the former estate have been preserved - a two-story outbuilding, a church and a small park.

Entry and passage into the village is free, however, unfortunately, it will not be possible to inspect the two-story house - it has passed into private ownership. Lovers of quiet and peaceful walks will appreciate the excellent view of the Mozhaisk Reservoir, which is unofficially called the Mozhaisk Sea.

House-museum of the artist S.V. Gerasimova

Near the Luzhetsky Monastery there is a small park with a two-story house. It has created a museum of the famous artist, where more than 450 of his works are presented. His picturesque landscapes reflected his love for his native land and captured the beauty of the Mozhaisk expanses.

Gerasimov’s personal belongings and awards were preserved in the house.

The house is in a beautiful location. On the territory of his parents' estate, the artist himself selected a site for his workshop and supervised the construction work.

Natural attractions of Mozhaisk

Most of the natural attractions are located outside the city. In Mozhaisk itself there are many squares, alleys, and park areas.

Leninsky Square

Address: Mozhaiskaya street. A small park in the city center. On its alleys there are several monuments dedicated to military signalmen and victims of repression. Along the square you can see houses with special memorial plaques about famous people who visited Mozhaisk.

Mozhaisk Reservoir

Park of Culture and Recreation of Russian-Belarusian Friendship

  • Address: st. Klementyevskaya.
  • Opening hours: Every day, around the clock.

The park's alleys run along the banks of the Moscow River. From the embankment you can see the Church of Elijah the Prophet. An Admiralty anchor is installed at the entrance to the park - this is a gift to sailors living in the Moscow region from veterans of the Navy of the Republic of Belarus. The park's comfortable paths and artificial lighting make it attractive for walking and playing sports.

The most beautiful places in Mozhaisk

All the attractions of Mozhaisk, which are usually used for a photo shoot or a memorable selfie, will be presented in this section. And there are enough of them.

Church of Joachim and Anna

The townspeople are also very proud of this architectural work. It is found in the historical (dilapidated) quarter of Yakimanka. Even more precisely - between Perovskaya and Krupskaya streets, opposite the Church of the Akhtyrskaya Icon of the Mother of God. The first version of the structure appeared back in the 1390s. What remained of it was the northern limit. The current building is the fruit of the labors of architects in the last third of the 19th century. Although one apse was made in 1770. In 1937, the priests of the temple were shot, and the temple itself was closed. Activities continued only in 1991. Restored. It is a striking example of Empire eclecticism of the 19th century. Raspberry color with blue domes and gold crosses. The dome ceiling is dark green. In 2013, the church was presented with the remains of the righteous Joachim and Anna. And since then it bears their names. On Thursdays, an akathist to the Godfathers is served here.

Victory Park

Having studied the request “What to see in Mozhaisk” in the top line of the distribution, we get a high-quality photo of the panorama of the urban beauty presented in the title. In the well-kept forest park, vacationers will find lanterns, sidewalks, benches and a toilet. The monuments to the Zenitka 61-K, Mozhaytsy-Heroes of the USSR and the Soldier-Liberator are pleasing to the eye. Turning onto Oktyabrskaya Square, it is easy to see 4 more monuments, the Mozhaisk Twin Cities stele, a fountain and a memorial complex, which is described below.

The memorial “There Were Ten Thousand” is a signature decoration of this recreation area. The conversation turned to a 7-meter mound, around which the most fierce battles with the Nazis took place. By the way, the main part of the memorial is at the 141st kilometer of the Minsk Highway. It is to this point that the village of Khvashchevka is close, whose history is full of particularly dramatic moments. On May 9, flowers or wreaths are always laid here.

Museum of Folk Culture

The rating “picturesque sights of Mozhaisk” continues with the exhibition mentioned in the title. It is located at the other end of the Mozhaisk “sea”, in the village of Porechye. Or rather on Bolnichnaya Street. The institution was created on the initiative of applied enthusiasts in this rural agglomeration. Here they exhibited their masterpieces, as well as crafts made by their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers. This refers to products made of iron and other metals, wood and textile materials. Ancient utensils used in this area are presented, as well as samples of folk costume. Route for exploring Mozhaisk on your own for 1 day

Mozhaisk, whose sights can be seen in one day, is famous for its places of religious pilgrimage and monuments of the military past:

  • Luzhetsky Monastery open to visitors from 9:00 to 17:00, located on Gerasimova Street, no. 1. The monastery is the only one of 18 similar structures that existed on the territory of Mozhaisk from the moment of its inception, which has survived to this day.

  • The holy spring can be found 100 m from the Luzhetsky Monastery. A monument to St. Ferapont was erected here, a church shop, a chapel and a font were built.
  • Memorial Square and Eternal Flame. The complex was opened in 1985 in the city center as a tribute to the war heroes. There are marble steles in the park with the names of the victims. At the end of the wide alley is the Eternal Flame.

What to see if you come with a child

You can visit any attraction in Mozhaisk with children. But little tourists may also like the following places:

The cinema building is located in the very center of the city (Mira Street, 2). It operates 24/7, ticket prices start from 100 rubles.

Holy Well of Ferapont

Usually children visit religious attractions without much enthusiasm, but the complex “Holy Well of Ferapont the Wonderworker of Mozhaisk” will not leave anyone indifferent. The complex includes:

  • fonts where everyone can plunge into healing moisture (female and male);
  • a small chapel and belfry;
  • food stalls with trading stalls;
  • a source where you can get holy water.

Local residents believe that the holy spring was excavated by Ferapont Belozersky himself in 1408. Moreover, this well is the second, and there are three in total. The construction of Feropont began at the age of 70, and he died at the age of 90. At first, the residents themselves looked after the source, but in 2005 it was burned down, and everything had to be rebuilt. Currently, the source is a landmark of the area, so the authorities do not leave the sacred place without attention.
