Where is Yuryev-Polsky located?
Yuryev-Polsky is located on the banks of the small river Koloksha, Vladimir region. The settlement was founded in 1152. Initially, the city connected trade routes from Rostov the Great, Pereslavl-Zalessky and Suzdal. The development of the settlement was rapid, but with the rise of Moscow it became a small town.
Now the city is often visited by tourists who are interested in the history of their native country and lovers of antiquity. Many buildings built before the Mongol yoke have been preserved here. The monasteries preserve the spirit of that time and the majesty of the buildings of that time.
There are buildings from the 19th century that also have an interesting architectural style. The population is around 19,000 people. The streets are laid out according to a regular rectangle, so walking on foot will be a special pleasure.
The city is located in the north-west of the Vladimir region. There is no own airport here. The closest one is located in the city of Ivanovo. Next you will need to transfer to a bus or car. Moscow is located 180 km from Yuryev-Polsky, so the journey by car will take 2-3 hours. The path goes through Kirzhach with Kolchugino. You need to take the A-105 highway.
You can get into the city by train. The railway station is located in the southern part - approximately 1.5 km from the central square. Long-distance trains and several electric trains regularly run into the city.
Not far from the railway station there is a bus station where regular buses arrive from Moscow, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Vladimir and Aleksandrov. 3-4 buses leave Moscow daily from the Shchelkovskaya metro station. The journey to the city will take 4 hours.
Heading to Sima
Meanwhile, we finished our inspection in Yuryev-Polsky. And let ours lie in Sima, to the place of the death of the great commander. It is only 25 kilometers towards Pereslavl-Zalessky. Why was the wounded Bagration brought here and who were the Golitsyns related to him? Everything is very simple here. The estate was owned by Bagration’s aunt, Anna Aleksandrovna Golitsyna (nee A.A. Gruzinskaya, granddaughter of the Georgian king Bakar III).

Bagration was very friendly with her and her husband Boris Andreevich Golitsyn. Boris Andreevich, by the way, commanded the Vladimir militia in the War of 1812. And Pyotr Ivanovich had often been to Sima before. Here he was overtaken by the news of his appointment as commander-in-chief of the 2nd Western Army in the War of 1812. Here death overtook him. There is an opinion that the news of the surrender of Moscow finally broke the general. Bagration was not told about this, but the adjutant spilled the beans. After which Pyotr Ivanovich got up, then fell ill again and died from a newly opened wound.
Weather in Yuryev-Polsky, best time to travel
The town is located in the same climatic zone as Moscow, so the weather is largely similar. In summer the weather is a comfortable temperature within 20-25 degrees.
Spring and autumn are quite long. Winter is characterized by warm weather, the air temperature rarely drops below -15 degrees. This is due to the geographical location - there are few forests around the city, mostly fields.
Residents and experienced tourists advise visiting the city in summer or winter. In spring and autumn, streets and buildings are not pleasing with their appearance, and moving along the roads is quite difficult. At this time, prolonged rains are also often observed, which cause some discomfort during excursions.
Religious buildings of Yuryev-Polsky
Yuryev-Polsky, whose attractions include numerous temples from the times of Ancient Rus' before the Tatar invasion, will not leave any person indifferent. Many monasteries have been preserved here in their original form or with minor changes after reconstruction. When visiting holy places, you can feel the purity and sublimity that fills the air and the surrounding area.
St. George's Cathedral
The temple was built in 1230 during the reign of Prince Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich. In the middle of the 15th century, the outer walls were partially destroyed. Architects from Moscow were invited for restoration. During reconstruction, the appearance was greatly changed, which negatively affected the stone carvings.
Now the cathedral attracts tourists with its white stone appearance in excellent condition. The walls have preserved some fragments of carvings on a biblical theme with the faces of saints. There is a Svyatoslav cross installed in the temple, which pilgrims and tourists come to worship.
- The cathedral is located on 1st May Street, no. 4.
- Visiting hours: Mon 9:00-14:30, Wed-Sun 9:00-17:00.
- Admission is paid - from 40 rubles.
Church of Nikita the Martyr
The building is distinguished by its unusual architecture, which attracts with its extraordinary beauty. The temple was created in the 18th century. The style of classicism with white stone columns was chosen for the façade. The building was decorated with a large number of narrow windows, which visually enlarge the space and let in a large amount of sunlight. There is a small dome on the roof.
In 1941, the monastery was closed and a bus station was placed inside. In the 80s, the building was returned to the church, which began restoration work. The first service was held in 1988. Now this is one of the favorite places for tourists and locals. The church is located at the address: Naberezhnaya Street.
Michael the Archangel Monastery
The building has existed since the beginning of the 13th century. During this time, the monastery was destroyed 4 times - during the Mongol invasion, in the Time of Troubles of the 17th century. Before the construction of the monastery, there was a Kremlin here. The monastery consists of a monastery, a bell tower, a refectory, the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian, and the Znamenskaya refectory church.
On the territory of the monastery, the St. George Church, made of wood, has been preserved. In the summer, servants create a beautiful garden of medicinal herbs. Nowadays, many rooms house exhibitions of the Historical and Architectural Museum.
- The temple is located on 1st May Street, no. 4.
- You can visit: Mon from 9:00 to 14:30, Wed-Sun from 9:00 to 17:00.

Church of the Nativity
In the 18th century, on the site of the destroyed monastery, a new building of the Church of the Nativity of Christ was built from wood. White stone was used for the walls. The façade was decorated with national decorative elements. Under the communists, the temple was closed, and the premises were given over to a dairy factory with a printing house. The bell tower was destroyed and all the furnishings were looted.
At the end of the twentieth century. The church was restored and services resumed. Restorers were able to recreate the former appearance of the building , which attracts guests to the city. Located on the lane. Avangardsky, 6.
St. Vvedensky Nikon Monastery
The exact date of construction of the temple is not known. The first documentary mention of the monastery was found in 1628. This year the building of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was erected.
In the middle of the 17th century, the wooden church was rebuilt into a stone one. 100 years later, the Vvedensky Cathedral with five domes and decorated with rich decorative elements was erected nearby. Fires often occurred on the territory of the monastery, but the premises were constantly restored.
After the revolution, the temple was closed. There were warehouses with workshops on the territory. Now the monastery has been restored. The monastery operates as usual. Located on the lane. Kalanchevsky, 5.
First burial
The hero was buried in the estate Church of the Epiphany, where a sarcophagus with a platinum plate was installed, on which the words were carved: “Prince Peter Ivanovich Bagration, while staying with his friend Prince Boris Andreevich Golitsyn, Vladimir province, Yuryev district, in the village of Sime, received the highest command to be Commander-in-Chief of the 2nd Western Army; from Sima he went to her, and having been wounded in action at Borodino, he returned to Sima and died on September 12th.”
Next came the epitaph written by Count Khvostov:
Passerby, in Sima behold the ashes of that hero,
Which thunder rolled on the Alpine heights.
He is the God of the army, the servant of the Fatherland and the throne,
Here he ended his life, slaying Napoleon.
This platinum plate is still kept in the museum in Yuryev-Polsky. But the Church of the Epiphany was dismantled during Soviet times. And now only a memorial plaque on the church of Dmitry of Thessaloniki reminds of the place of the general’s original burial.
Temple of Dmitry of Thessalonica in Sima, 1775
This temple was built in the 18th century, it has been preserved and is functioning. On its very well-groomed territory, where entry is free, there is a monument to Bagration. There is a stone slab nearby, it is fake. As far as we understand, this is not a grave.

At the confluence of the two rivers Koloksha and Gza, Grand Duke Yuri Dolgoruky stopped his gaze. In 1152, the prince founded the city of Yuryev-Polsky. Yuryev is called the smallest pearl of the Golden Ring. And although our city is small, it reflected the entire history of the Russian state like a tiny mirror. The founder of the city named the city after himself, Yuryev, because of the fields surrounding the city, adding “Polish”. Yuryev-Polsky is the very heart of Vladimir Opolye.
The ancient city was conceived as a real fortress, surrounded by a kilometer-long rampart. In the ring of ancient ramparts there is a complex of the princely Michael the Archangel Monastery founded in the 13th century by Prince Svyatoslav. Burned by the Tatar-Mongols, it was again reborn from the ashes. The existing buildings date back to the late 17th and 18th centuries. The white-stone splendor of the temples is truly an imperishable witness of the past and can tell a lot about the lives of people of bygone days. The Yuryev-Polsky Historical, Architectural and Art Museum is located in the monastery buildings.
Directly in front of the entrance is the main St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral (early 19th century), which since 2002 has been used jointly with the Vladimir-Suzdal diocese. The temple contains Christian shrines. Reliquary icons containing about three hundred pieces of holy relics are placed in a specially constructed wooden, carved reliquary. In the monastery church, a wooden sculpture of XY-XIX is shown from the museum collections.
In the very center of the monastery courtyard there is a hipped bell tower dating from 1683. There is an observation deck at the belfry; this is one of the most visited places in the museum. From the west there is a panorama of the central part of the city, from the north there are endless fields of Yuryevsky Opole. Descending from the belfry, you find yourself at the “Bell Rings” exhibition, reflecting the history of bells, ringing, and their significance in church life. The display cases display documents, photographs, a model of the ancient city, and the walls are painted on this theme. The exhibits included fragments of bells thrown down during the destruction of the bell towers, donated by city and rural residents. On the floor below is the exhibition “Monastic Cell”. All objects convey the atmosphere of the solitary prayerful life of a monk. The monastery played a big role in the social, cultural and educational life of the city.
Another exhibition is no less famous; it is dedicated to the War of 1812 and the outstanding general of that time P.I. Bagration. The name of Peter Ivanovich is closely connected with our region. He repeatedly visited the village of Sima on the estate of a friend and relative of Prince B.A. Golitsyn. While in Sima, P.I. Bagration received the appointment to be the commander-in-chief of the second Western Army, he was brought there, seriously wounded in the Battle of Borodino, there he died, and was buried in the family crypt of the Golitsyn princes.
Above the “holy gate” 1654 The Theological Gate Church built in 1670 is located. where the “Art Exhibition” is open. The exhibition features various items from the museum's collection.
The painting section introduces portrait works by artists of the academic school of painting, with the works of the Itinerant artists: V. Makovsky, M. Boskin, Usov, Voroshilov, etc. The exhibition presents dishes from Russian factories: Gardner, Popov, Kuznetsov, etc. unknown Western European factories. In the altar part of the temple there is a collection of ancient Russian paintings of the 16th-17th centuries, which is made up of icons kept in churches and cathedrals of the surrounding villages of the Yuryev-Polsky region, as well as the St. Michael the Archangel Monastery. On the ground floor of the Archimandrite building there is an exhibition “Peasantry and Agriculture of the Vladimir Opolye”. The exhibition opens with a diorama, sounded by the voices of birds, music and a story. Many exhibits and documents will help you understand the life, morals, and customs of people who lived in ancient times. Here are the decorations of the ancient Merya tribe, which inhabited our region, tools for cultivating the soil, and the interiors of peasant and landowner life. You will have to climb to the second floor along the “Staircase to History”, which will introduce you to the main historical stages of the Yuryevsky region. On the second floor there is an exhibition “The History of Manufactory in Yuryev-Polsky District”, which begins with a chopped-down village hut. An integral part of her interior are objects reflecting weaving in village lighthouses. Among them are various types of spinning wheels, spindles, combs for carding flax, in a wall display case there are samples of linen cloth with printed patterns from the 18th century, samples of different stages of flax processing. The second hall shows the further development of weaving in the county. The history of the emergence of the weaving factory of the Yuryev merchants Ganshins and Ovsyannikovs. The interior of the manufacturers' living room is filled with a variety of objects reflecting the life of that time. Authentic documents tell about the activities of factory owners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum owns a unique monument of the 13th century. St. George's Cathedral of Vladimir-Suzdal white stone architecture, which is rightfully considered a pearl. It was built in 1230-1234 by Prince Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich, the grandson of Yuri Dolgoruky. Stone carvings can be seen in many places of the Golden Ring, but here it is unique and special. You are parasitized by the bizarre chaos of wall sculptures. Beasts and monsters, saints and angels, fragments of fantastic stone garlands, engulfed in the jaws of lion masks, and fragments of the finest plant patterns form a mysterious mosaic. These are the first impressions experienced by everyone who sees St. George's Cathedral for the first time.
In St. George's Cathedral there is a "Crucifixion" or "Svyatoslav's Cross", which is one of the largest and most subject-based compositions of the decorative decoration of the cathedral. The crucifix is especially revered by believers due to its miraculous powers. Those who wish, together with a guide, can take a tour of the city, where they will get acquainted with the architecture of the 19th-20th centuries.
Having passed through the arch of the monastery gate, you will find yourself in a quiet, cozy courtyard enclosed by brick walls. To the right of the entrance, the archimandrite building is buried in the aroma of fragrant lilacs. The first floor is occupied by the exhibition “Peasantry and Agriculture of the Vladimir Opolye”. You will have to climb to the second floor along the “Staircase to History”. This small exhibition introduces the main historical stages of the Yuryevsky region. Here is the founder of the city, Grand Duke Yuri Dolgoruky in chain mail and a princely cloak, and his grandson, the first appanage prince Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich, holding in the palm of his hand a model of the famous white-stone cathedral. Under the shadow of a beautiful white-trunked birch tree, in prayer for the human race, our fellow countryman, Rev. Nikon of Radonezh, disciple of the Great Sergius of Radonezh, abbot of the Russian land. The Monk Nikon was born in our city in 1352. Very young, he left his parents' home for the monastic life. His arrival at the Trinity Lavra of Sergeev was the beginning of the difficult monastic feat of the future Russian saint. On the site of his parents' house in the 19th century. They built a monastery, which is currently working to restore monastic life. Going up to the second floor, you will meet the real miracle of Opole - the haymaking season. It's time for bliss. The aromas of fragrant hay will stop even the most picky visitor. Near a small hay stack there are simple tools for haymaking. Noon, hot. It's time for rest and lunch. On a canvas towel there is a rye loaf, a basket with eggs and a jar of vigorous bread kvass. Yuryevskoye Opolye was famous not only for its farmers, but also for its weavers. Entering the halls of the second floor of the archimandrite building, you will immediately be convinced of this. The exhibition “Golden Lenok” will tell you about hand-made oil printing on canvases from the 18th to 19th centuries. You will see how meticulous, modern masters recognized the secret of printed patterns and repeated the miracle - patterns on modern canvases. Here you can also see hand-printed prints on chintz scarves by the Yuryev merchant Maslennikov. The museum stores a rich collection of ancient printed fabrics, which allows us to judge the great artistic taste and high skill of the masters of the 18th-19th centuries. V. For example, in 1784 there were 2 printing factories in the city that produced printed fabrics worth 6 thousand rubles. There were 2 silk factories in the district with an annual output of 14 thousand rubles. , there were six linen factories, and the annual income was 23 thousand rubles. Embroidery on canvas towels, cambric, mesh, lace weaving will simply enchant you with its extraordinary expressiveness, elegance, and imagination. Having looked at the work of modern weavers at the Avangard factory, you will be convinced that weaving masters have not disappeared even today. Plush with cut pile, soft to the touch, with a grassy pattern, with a geometric and abstract scattering of patterns, with a melodic color scheme attracts not only the eyes, but also the hands, you really want to touch the creation of the master weavers. Tapestry and tartan are more restrained and modest in their designs, thereby arousing respect. But jacquard towels, bright, colorful fireworks, drawings, inscriptions funny and serious, for children and adults. Fairy-tale scenes, pictures from your favorite cartoons, bouquets of flowers and exquisite ornaments evoke surprise and pride in our craftsmen. You will definitely want to buy such a towel, soft, fluffy, bright or, on the contrary, discreet or completely simple, plain, please buy it, there will always be a beautiful terry work of weaving art for you in the museum’s souvenir salon. To continue exploring the exhibitions, you need to leave the Archimandrite building and return to the monastery courtyard. Above the gates rises the Theological Church (1670), its facades are beautifully decorated with kokoshniks, a curb, a porch with a belt of square flies, and the windows are decorated with arched eyebrows. The church premises housed an art exhibition from the museum's collections. The visitor will see luxurious and varied exhibits. Icons from the 19th to 19th centuries occupy a worthy place in the exhibition. Most of them belong to the Vladimir-Suzdal school of icon painting, which is distinguished by its spirituality of images, soft colors and laconic design. It is impossible to pass by the royal gates of the 19th century indifferently. With the image of Basil the Great and John Chrysostom. The icons of the Apostle Paul and St. John the Baptist of the 19th century are particularly monumental. Large figures of saints occupy the entire plane of the icon board and are clearly perceived both up close and at a distance. The figures are shown in motion, they are flat and graphic. Particularly noteworthy is the icon of the Mother of God “Rejoices in You.” It is expensive and valuable because we know the master who wrote it. On the back is the inscription “wrote this image by Alexander son Ogarev.” Against the background of the bluish-greenish cathedral in the center is an image of the Mother of God of the “Sign” type. The icon is made in dark colors. The icon painter, working on the icon, marked on the drawing where what kind of paint should be put. Icons with such author's notes are very rare. “He rejoices in You” shows us the depth of Orthodox theology. The icon depicts one of the hymns of a church service. The porcelain collection will captivate with its diversity and originality. The floor vase “forest miracle” looks like a small, fairy-tale island where various forest animals take refuge. Even elegant Japanese porcelain found a place on the display shelf. What would an art exhibition be without portraits? The academic school is represented by four works. One of them, a portrait of a young woman, a mysterious stranger in a white transparent blanket. A deep look, a soft, barely noticeable smile, just a hint of it. A charming image of a woman shoots through the mind, opens the heart and you understand - this is the ideal of female beauty, this is the secret of femininity and love, this is what a woman was intended by the Creator, beauty is all in the soul, somewhere inside, deep, and the light breaks through through the eyes, the smile , face This miracle was created by the brush of Maria Kurt. The artist performed the work using the glazing technique, very technically, correctly, one can feel a warm, friendly attitude towards the depicted heroine. A wide variety of works by Itinerant artists is V.E. Makovsky, V.K. Lemokh, N.V. Boskin, T.I. Mozgov, K.V. Nikolaev. and others have left their brilliant works for us.
You can continue to examine the precious museum casket in the “Artistic Wood Carving” exhibition, which is located in the St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral (1809). This pillarless, apseless building has remarkable acoustic properties. Wall paintings have been preserved in the cathedral. Decorative carvings and wooden sculptures of the 16th-19th centuries. its components. An example of ancient Russian wooden sculpture are images of St. George the Victorious (XV century), St. Paraskeva-Pyatnitsa, St. Nicholas of Mozhaisk (XV11th century). The collection of carved royal gates opens with gates from the 16th century, made with surprisingly delicate, openwork, through carving. Gate XU11-XU111 centuries. testify to the great skill and subtle artistic taste of Russian carvers.
In the southern part of the monastery complex, in the same row with the archimandrite building, there is the Church of the Sign of 1625. In the church premises there is an exhibition dedicated to P.I. Bagration. The name of the famous commander, participant in the War of 1812, is closely connected with our region. He visited the village more than once. Sima, on the estate of a friend and relative, Prince B.A. Golitsyn. While in Sima, Bagration was appointed to be the commander-in-chief of the second western army, he was brought there seriously wounded after the Battle of Borodino, there he died, and was buried in the local church of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica. Documents, guns, banners, cannons, blunderbusses will tell about the events associated with the War of 1812. The main exhibit is considered to be a carriage, the work of the royal coachmaker Menzhelbier, on which the wounded commander was brought to the village of Sima. The exhibition is decorated with two interiors of the estate of the princes Golitsyn. Porcelain, writing instruments, a letter box, furniture made by German masters, books and portraits of the owners will help you transport yourself to those distant, glorious times of our Russia.
In the very center of the monastery courtyard is a beautiful bell tower. She is extremely monumental and representative. All planes of the facades are richly decorated. The bell tower is crowned by a tent with edges-protrusions on the ribs, with three tiers of dormer windows. There is an observation deck at the belfry. Admire the endless fields of Yuryevsky Opole. Fields, fields to the very horizon. Yuryev-Polsky is located on the territory of Vladimir Opolye. From south to north, Opole stretches for 30 km, from west to east for 70. Going down the spiral staircase, look into the “Monastic Cell” exhibition. All objects convey the atmosphere of the solitary and prayerful life of a monk. The monastery played a big role in the social, cultural and educational life of the city. Documents that have survived to this day are evidence of this. For example, in 1862, the monks took upon themselves the work of teaching children Russian literacy, church singing, the rudiments of the Law of God, the first operations of arithmetic and the rudiments of Russian grammar. To teach children in the listed sciences, the abbot, Archimandrite Gabriel, selects teachers from among the monks, and the leader of the Yuryev nobility, Alexey Vasilyevich Kalachev, “a rich apartment of four rooms, furniture, books, materials for writing”... On the floor above the cell is the exhibition “Bell Rings”. The entire history of bells is shown in exhibits and documents. In the display cases there are fragments of bells that local residents kept in secluded places.
Not far from the bell tower nestles the wooden Church of St. George (1718), a striking example of ancient, log-cut church churches. The roof is planked on two slopes, sharp, high. The drum and head are covered with aspen wood, reminiscent of a pine cone. The cross is also wooden. The church exudes warmth and homeland; it is beautiful at all times of the year. The craftsmen who made aspen lelekh received the surname Lelekhov, which is still alive today.
The museum owns a unique monument of the XIII century of Vladimir-Suzdal white stone architecture, St. George's Cathedral, which is rightfully considered a pearl. The cathedral was built in 1234 by Prince Svyatoslav Sh Vsevolodovich and is beautifully decorated with carvings from the base to the head. The builders of the first stone church in Moscow - the Assumption Cathedral (1326) - took St. George's Cathedral of our city as a model for its compositions. In the 60s of the 15th century. The cathedral collapsed diagonally from north-west to south-east. To restore the temple, which played such an important role in the initial history of the construction of Moscow, the famous Moscow builder V.D. Ermolin was sent to Yuryev. The beauty of the ancient carving captivated Ermolin; he carefully examined the stones, trying to establish a connection between them, but he could not assemble them as before. Only a few plot compositions were restored, and the rest of the stones were used to clad the facades of the cathedral. Stone carvings can be seen in many places of the Golden Ring, but here it is unique and special. The subject compositions and individual figures are made in high relief, and the entire surface of the walls is covered with a delicate floral pattern. There is reason to believe that the carving was carried out by two teams of masters: one carved figured high reliefs, the other carved low ornamental backgrounds. Artistic analysis shows that the carving was made by Russian, Vladimir-Suzdal masters and only the main carver was invited from Galich.
The content of the high reliefs is varied: here is the Holy Great Martyr George, the heavenly patron of the founder of the city, the seven youths who fell asleep in Ephesus, lions with tree-shaped tails and protruding tongues, figures of saints and female masks, dragons, griffins, centaurs, the Sirin bird, and many other patterns , which makes you stop in amazement at this miracle. The white stone sculpture of St. George's Cathedral contains a total of 450 reliefs. Inside the cathedral, as a wonderful monument to the piety of the holy prince Svyatoslav, there is a life-giving cross. Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich came to venerate the cross built by the holy prince, who created the cathedral itself. Reverently before this shrine, the sovereign, according to the testimony of ancient acts, released everything necessary from his royal bounty.
Next to the ticket office there is a small, cozy souvenir shop where, as a good memory of visiting the museum, you can buy terry towels from a local factory, a variety of Gusev crystal products, various handicrafts by local craftsmen, and aromatic, healing, floral honey from Yuryevsky apiaries.
The small town of Yuryev-Polsky is dear to the Russian soul and those who visit it will admire the ancient beauty. The silence and space of vast fields. He will certainly want to come back here more than once.
Wedding.
One of the unusual forms of the museum’s work is the organization of collective visits to the museum during a family wedding celebration. This event is called “Golden Ring of Love Honeymoon”. The wedding cortege arrives at the main entrance of the museum. In the monastery courtyard, the newlyweds and their numerous guests are greeted by museum staff in national costumes with traditional hospitality. The loaf presented in the museum symbolizes their further joint work for the common good and serves as a wish for a strong family. Employees welcome the young couple according to specially designed scenarios. So, for example, according to one of them, the national bear congratulates the newlyweds on their wedding day. As you know, in Russian folklore the figure is colorful and wonderful. A bright, smiling, kind and elegant life-size doll gives all participants of the holiday a good mood, a charge of vivacity, adds energy, enthusiasm, strength and leaves an unforgettable impression of the special day. Museum halls provide an excellent opportunity to capture a special event on photo and film.
Our museum hosts various classes for children, one of them is “Ancient art - tiles.” In this lesson, children get acquainted with the relief tiles that existed in the Vladimir region, learn why the tile is called that, where the tiles were used and where they are used, how the tile differs from modern tiles. The children get acquainted with the technology of making tiles and enjoy making them themselves from salt dough.
For preschool and school-age children, staff developed a scenario for the mass event “Under the Christmas Star.” A fabulous, unique performance dedicated to the Orthodox holiday. Four people voice over 10 characters in the Christmas event. The Magi, the Virgin Mary, Joseph, a Christmas tree, a snowstorm, shepherds... A life-size bear puppet and a cheerful goat play with the children. Children take part in exciting quizzes, games, dance in a circle, sing, dance and read poetry.
Exhibition “The Past Fate of My Land”
Anniversaries are different. Anniversaries are celebrated by writers, poets, and actors. MBUK "Yuryev-Polsky Historical, Architectural and Art Museum" is preparing for the anniversary of the historical event. On April 21 - 22, 1216, the Battle of Lipitsa took place 10 km north of the city of Yuryev-Polsky, near the village of Gorodishchi (the ancient city of Mstislavl). It includes the floodplain of the Vaga River (the chronicle Tuneg stream), the adjacent slopes of two hills (the chronicle mountains of Avdov and Yuryev) and a moist meadow turning into a swamp. From the south and west, large swamps adjoin the area, now almost drained. This one of the largest battles in ancient Rus' received its name from the Lipitsa River, near which a terrible fratricidal war took place between the combined militia of the Novgorodians under the command of Prince Mstislav the Udal, who took the side of Konstantin Vsevolodovich, and the Suzdal army under the command of princes Yaroslav and Yuri Vsevolodovich and their younger brothers. slashing. The reason for this was the resentment of Vsevolod's eldest son Constantine, who was deprived by his father of the right to occupy the Grand Duke's throne, against his younger brother George, who inherited the rights of the Grand Duke. Chroniclers mourned this terrible battle, in which son went against father, brother against brother. In one day, April 21, 1216, 9,233 Russian soldiers died in this battle. Some historiographers believe that this is only from the Vladimir-Suzdal side.
In honor of the anniversary of the historical event, a mini-exhibition “The Past Fate of My Land” opened on March 21, where museum visitors can get acquainted with archaeological objects: parts of horse harness, weapons and household items. The exhibition features a replica of Yaroslav Vsevolodovich’s helmet, provided to the museum by a local resident, local historian Sergei Evdokimov. Visitors are also offered a colorful range of information: enlarged copies of pages from the Front Chronicle of the 16th century, images of military equipment of soldiers of that era, a map of the location of the principalities and a detailed description of the battle.
In the exhibition “Peasantry and Agriculture of the Vladimir Opolye” of the Yuryev-Polsky Historical, Architectural and Art Museum, an adapted lecture is being held for children - an excursion “The Golden Spikelet”. The children get acquainted with the development of agriculture in our region and the first tools of labor. Children learn that a loaf of bread begins with a grain, and before it gets to the table, it goes through many different transformations: people of different professions take part in its production. In conclusion, the guys try a hot loaf straight from the “Russian oven” and play the exciting game “Collect a spikelet.” Throughout the lecture, special attention is paid to careful and respectful treatment of bread. Also, the children are introduced to modern agricultural machines through photographs, which have replaced the hard manual labor of the plowman.
The mini-exhibition “And they glorified the Fatherland with sword and word...” is open for viewing by visitors in the exposition dedicated to P.I. Bagration and the Vladimir participants in the War of 1812. The main goals: to contribute to the activation of the museum’s educational work to foster spirituality among the younger generation and to help present a picture of a national feat. The showcase displays archival documents and photocopies related to the People's War and military household items from the 19th century. The exhibition will run until the end of 2016.
Since October 7, the museum’s office has opened an exhibition – boudoir “True beauty and femininity is timeless.” When creating it, the team of authors sought to show the elegant and sophisticated world of a woman. Visitors are presented with elegant jewelry, marvelous boxes with secrets, shoes, as well as objects of decorative and applied art.

Monuments in Yuryev-Polsky
The small town contains many historical monuments, which provide an opportunity to feel the spirit of that time and plunge into the atmosphere of antiquity. Residents treat the buildings with special respect, passing this on to their children and tourists. The streets are filled with silence and splendor, which fascinate with the spirit of antiquity.
Monument to Yuri Dolgoruky
The monument has been erected in the central part of the city since 2002. The work was carried out by sculptor I. Chernoglazov. The prince stands on a pedestal with his right hand on his shield and holds his cloak with his left. The gaze is directed into the distance, as if making a difficult decision.
Two lions were installed next to the monument to protect the prince. In summer, the area nearby is decorated with beautiful flowers in flowerpots. Some tourists themselves come to the monument with flowers, paying tribute to the founder of the city. Address of the monument: st. Vladimirskaya, 12.

Earthen ramparts of the ancient city of Mstislavl
Gorodishche is a settlement 20 km from Yuryev-Polsky, founded in the 11th century. There are two versions of the founding of the city: according to the first, it is believed that the founder was Vladimir Monomakh, according to the second, Monomakh’s son Mstislav. The settlement began to be destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols and was completed in the 20th century.
Now here you can only see earth shafts 5 meters high, visually forming a ring . The path to them is blocked by artificial ditches of 3-5 m. Archaeologists found many household items, remains of dishes and walls during excavations. Residents are protecting the ancient structure from further destruction. The ramparts still preserve the former grandeur of Mstislavl.
To inspect, you need to drive to the village. Gorodishche, Yuryev-Polsky district, Vladimir region.
Ancient barn building
The building was created in the 19th century. The building has one floor; bricks of different red shades were used during construction. The walls are decorated with decorative elements. The roof is gable. The barn is located in the central part of Yuryev-Polsky, surrounded by residential buildings. The building was included in the list of protected monuments.
Located on the lane. Avangardsky, 3.
Shopping arcades
They have been located on Sovetskaya Square since 1877. Before that, there was Gostiny Dvor here, built under Catherine II. The rows look like a straight gallery, where small shops are now located. Souvenirs, flowers and other necessary goods are presented here. This square was previously called Torgovaya, but after the revolution it was renamed.
Address of shopping arcades: Sovetskaya Square, Yuryev-Polsky.
Peter and Paul Monastery
The date of construction of the structure is a subject of dispute among scientists who cannot decide. One part considers the 16th century, the other – the 17th century. During its entire existence, they tried to close the monastery several times, but the church managed to defend it.
Many historical buildings in Yuryev-Polsky are in disrepair
In the 19th century, the wooden cathedral was rebuilt using stone. Eight years later, the Assumption Church and bell tower were erected nearby. Under the communists, the monastery was closed. Now all that remains of the temple is the bell tower. In 2010, the Russian Orthodox Church decided to restore the monastery and transfer it to a convent. The building is located at the address: 1st May Street, 74.
Zemlyanoy Val - the ancient Kremlin of Yuryev-Polsky
Just imagine - the earthen rampart was built almost a thousand years ago. To be precise, this happened immediately after the founding of the city by Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152. The length of the shaft is almost a kilometer. The height ranges from 5 to 8 meters.
To begin the journey around the ancient fortress, you need to leave the territory of the monastery and walk to the corner tower. Here, near the intersection, a smooth ascent to the earthen rampart begins.
Climbing it is much easier than climbing the bell tower. The ascent is very slow, gradual, accessible even to those who cannot walk and use a wheelchair.
In summer people ride bicycles along the top of the ancient rampart, in winter it is a favorite route for skiers.
Let's take a little thoughtful walk. It’s already getting dark, so we’ll be lucky to see the Yuryev-Polsky Kremlin in the rays of the winter sunset.
The earthen rampart around the ancient city looks like the proverbial ring of time. On one side is a modern (albeit with shades of antiquity) city. There are asphalt roads, traffic lights, buildings with plastic windows and other attributes of our time.
But turn your head and look inside the ring of earthen walls. Everything here, or almost everything, is the same as it was a long time ago. Old fortress walls, watchtowers, a cathedral with a bell tower, which we already climbed, a wooden church, assembled without a single nail, a chapel over the gable, also wooden.
And even the boiler room, which heats all the buildings on the territory of the monastery, is still heated with coal. Think about it! This is the 21st century, gas pipes have reached the most remote villages and made life in a village house warm and comfortable, since the huts now have hot water.
Coal boiler houses are now a rarity. And you and I can easily see one of these old-fashioned miracles of technology here, on the territory of the Yuryev-Polsky Museum. And in general, if we want to see her, we need to hurry up. Negotiations are already underway to gasify the territory of the monastery, so that soon the mountains of coal, the furnaces in which this coal is burned, and the stokers themselves, who keep the fire in the furnaces in shifts, will disappear from here. All this still works properly and can serve as a museum exhibit in itself.
And in general, walking in the fresh air is a very useful activity. Observing the measured life of a small county town, admiring the wonderful evening landscapes, you involuntarily disconnect from current affairs, constant calls, meetings, a pile of absolutely urgent papers and other things that have been causing your head to pound for a long time and non-stop.
Being on the earthen rampart, we look at life a little from above, a little detached. And strange thoughts appear in my head. I would give up everything, go to such a small town, settle here forever, walk, breathe fresh air, drink clean water, listen to birds singing and watch snowflakes fall in silence.
Here, the frantic pace of life somehow fades away on its own, from which you cannot hide in a metropolis. And some positive, good thoughts appear. The future, at least its immediate part, becomes clear and positive.
Now we’ll walk for another hour, and then we’ll go to some cafe. Let's have dinner. Then we'll go to the hotel. No need to worry - we have already booked your room in advance. Everything is settled. Let's go into the room, throw things in the corners, take a bath and sleep! Sleep!
How often can we go to bed at eight o'clock in the evening at home? And here it is possible! Especially after a walk in the fresh air. After all, tomorrow we don’t have to get up early and go to work. We came to relax a bit! Who said that you can’t have a full rest in three days? These are all fairy tales. The main thing is to rest properly. Don't stare at the TV or smartphone screen. Do not turn on your laptop every minute to check email or respond to important messages in chats. No work! No calls from or to the office. No emails! We're on vacation! All!
Believe it or not, such positive scenarios make the impossible. Even if just a day ago you felt overwhelmed, exhausted or overloaded with work that has no end in sight, you somehow immediately relax, life takes on colors again. Even if this scenario is only until tomorrow morning, the certainty and inevitability of upcoming pleasant events make you almost happy.
You begin to look at what is happening completely differently. The idea of going on vacation for a couple of days begins to be perceived not as a waste of time, which is always missing anyway. You are glad that you came up with and planned this spontaneous vacation so well and decide that you need to do this more often.
Full of these positive thoughts, we approach the famous monastery pond . Now it is covered with ice and covered with snow, but spring will come and amazing evening shows will take place here. Frogs! They say they are something special here. They give such evening concerts that nightingales will envy them. Yes! We should definitely come here in the spring. Let's say early May!
Now look at this photo. Now you definitely won’t forget what year Yuryev-Polsky was founded!
Let's move on. Here the ring of the earthen rampart breaks. A road passes through it. It is interesting that this gap was made during construction. Many hundreds of years ago there was also a road here. So we will have to descend to the surface of the earth along a smooth slope, and then rise again if we wish to continue our “detour”.
From the next part of the shaft we see an interesting picture, full of contrasts. The gaze immediately picks out three significant objects from the landscape: the white stone St. George's Cathedral , the remains of the large red brick Trinity Cathedral a dilapidated wooden building in a mortuary state.
The last one is the most interesting. Over time, we will get closer to it and make sure that this wooden house should have been torn down long ago and the territory used more rationally. But after a subsequent conversation with the museum staff, it became clear that this was not just a rickety shack with a fire crying over it. Before us, surprisingly, is a protected architectural monument.
At one time, the commission decided that, due to some special characteristics, this wreck belongs to the objects of cultural heritage. This means that you can’t just smash it to pieces - the fine for destroying a monument will be such that it would be possible to build a palace.
This house is in the foreground. You can't just rebuild it either. It definitely needs to be restored. And restoration is even more expensive than a fine!
The most surprising thing about all this is that this building has a very specific owner. But, despite the fact that this little house is supposedly his property, he cannot dispose of it at his own discretion. It turns out like in the famous film: “Who will put him in jail? He’s a MONUMENT!” Here it is: this dilapidated shack is also a monument. So, no repairs, modern building materials or other liberties. Restoration only. I don't envy the owner. And we still thought that it was our problem.
Matching the wooden house is the huge and once majestic Trinity Cathedral . His fate is also unenviable. Built in 1914, it served its intended purpose for only three years. And after the revolution, there was just so much here. The most destructive thing for the building was the placement of a power plant here.
The heads with the drums were destroyed and some of the ceilings were blown up. For 20 years from 1930 to 1950, constant vibration of the equipment took its toll. The cathedral began to fall apart.
Currently, it is considered an emergency and is closed to access. There is no question of restoration, since it is much more expensive than building such a temple from scratch. Nobody knows how and when this problem will be solved.
Fortunately, this sad picture is somewhat smoothed out by the magnificent white stone St. George's Cathedral . It was built back in 1234 by order of Grand Duke Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich.
Since then, the cathedral has been rebuilt many times and unsuccessfully restored, as a result of which the original appearance was lost. Nevertheless, as we approach, we cannot help but notice that we are approaching a previously unseen work of art!
Stone carving. From the very foundation to the top of the walls. Figures of saints, strange animals and vines of plants - all of this forms a single continuous “carpet” carving.
St. George's Cathedral is unique and famous all over the world. Experts agree that it is so valuable that it deserves to stand under a glass dome. Let's not delve into the cathedral for now. It’s better to come specially later and look at it properly. You can even book a tour and go inside. Surely you can learn and see a lot of interesting things.
At the end of our walk we find ourselves again at the entrance to the monastery. In general, tourist access to the territory is closed at 17.00. But you and I are simply fabulously lucky! On that very day there was a service in the temple and we managed to agree to walk around the monastery at night.
In the dark, with backlighting, everything looks completely different than during the day. Our walk was short, but long enough to take some good photos. You don't see this every day.
So, the first day of my stay in Yuryev-Polsky safely came to an end. Fine. No, it's just great! There are not enough words to describe the special state that you experience here. You can throw out cliched phrases, like peace, grace or calmness, but all these will be just words.
In any case, I did not regret at all that I took such a short vacation. And Yuryev-Polsky itself turned out to be a pleasant, calm and quiet town. It is to such cities that it is best to run away, escaping from many years of work without rest. Nothing! The bosses will not become poor in those three days until I make them richer every day. But I will rest a little and gain energy. Maybe some smart thoughts will come. After all, in a completely clogged head, they cannot appear in principle. There is no place or time for them. But slow down a little and amazing things begin to happen.
OK. Enough philosophy for today. Now to the cafe for dinner, then to the hotel, shower and sleep. The morning is wiser than the evening!

Architectural structures in Yuryev-Polsky
Yuryev-Polsky is a city whose sights are represented by architectural monuments preserved from the times of Ancient Rus'. A walk through such places will bring special pleasure.
Here you can plunge into the atmosphere of antiquity and mentally find yourself back in that time. The rhythm of modern life leaves no time for spirituality, so visiting such cities allows you to forget about the bustle and think about the eternal.
Golitsyn Estate
The estate is located in the village of Sima, which belonged to the M. Golitsyn family since the reign of Peter I. The building has existed for more than 200 years and has become quite dilapidated during this time. The master's house and 2 outbuildings on the sides have been preserved. The house is surrounded by a beautiful park with a small pond.
It was here that P.I. was brought. Bagration after being wounded in the battle of Borodino, where he died. Now in the main house there is a museum dedicated to P.I. Bagration. The exhibits include the commander’s personal belongings and copies of some documents. Other rooms housed a library and a folk art center.
The estate is located in the village of Sima, Yuryev-Polsky district, Vladimir region. Opening hours: Wed-Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 10:00-15:00.
Fire station
The building was built at the end of the 19th century on the territory of burnt shopping arcades. The building was created in a pseudo-Gothic architectural style made of red brick. It was later repainted gray and white, but the gates are bright red. There are small decorative elements on the façade. During the years of communist rule, some premises were given over to the theater.
Now the building is used for its intended purpose, but requires major renovation. Despite the years, the building has retained its unique beauty and sophistication. The depot is located at: st. Vladimirskaya, 12.
Almshouse of the Meshcherins
The almshouse was built in 1904 and is located in the central part of the city. A neo-Russian architectural style of 2 floors was chosen for construction. The facade is decorated with pilasters, zakomaras and risalits.
The institution was intended for people of the disabled population from the bourgeois and merchant classes. There was an almshouse funded by donations from wealthy people. The name of the building was given in honor of E.I. and G.I. Meshcherins, who donated a large sum of money for the construction. Nowadays, the central regional hospital is located here. The building is located at the address: st. 1st May, no. 16.
Apraksin Estate
The estate is located near the city - in the village. Ratislovo. The building was built at the beginning of the 18th century. The main estate was designed in a classic style and consisted of 2 floors. On both sides there were wings with galleries in an L-shape. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Church of the Icon of the Kazan Mother of God was built on the territory of the estate.
In the 60s of the twentieth century, a new temple was erected on the site of the church. Unfortunately, the outbuildings have not survived to this day. The decor on the façade of the main house has completely collapsed over time, so there is no way to see them. Now one of the premises belongs to a rural school, but due to frequent restoration work, the original appearance of the building has been lost. The buildings are surrounded by a beautiful park with 8 ponds.
Estate address: s. Ratislovo, Yuryev-Polsky district, Vladimir region.
Who is Bagration and where was he wounded?
Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration - Russian general, commander of the 2nd Western Army, participant in the battle of Borodino. It was there on August 26 (September 7, old style) 1812 that he was wounded in the tibia of his left leg. After which he was sent to Moscow, where after about a week he began to have a fever and the wound began to fester. The core fragment was still in the general's body. Some time later (after a medical consultation), the wounded man was diagnosed with sepsis and was offered amputation, which he categorically refused.
Bagration's injury. Photo: yamoscow.ru
Soon the hero went to Sima. On the way he experienced terrible suffering. Medic Ya.I. Govorov involuntarily became their witness: “Often he was forced to stop among the fields, convulsive movements often appeared on his face, it often seemed to me that he was ready to part with life, which was so painful for him. Seeing all this suffering and being with him as a trusted and close doctor, I myself suffered as much morally as he physically suffered. My heart was breaking with compassion...” There is even information that the peasants covered Bagration’s path with straw so that the general would shake less. And the last 19 kilometers to Sima they carried him in their arms. Upon arrival in the village, Peter Ivanovich finally underwent an operation to widen the wound.
A disappointing picture was revealed, which the doctors described as follows: “A notable incision of the soft parts near the wound revealed a complete fracture and crushing of the tibia, the sharp and uneven ends of which, together with the fragment of the core, stuck deep into the fleshy parts, undeniably caused cruelty to the prince during his illness. and unbearable pain and fever itself. An extraordinary amount of purulent and smelly matter came out of the wound, and the wound appeared to be very deep with damage to important blood vessels and nerves.” The fragments were removed, but this changed little. Gangrene began.
On September 12 (24), 1812, 17 days after being wounded, at the age of 47, General Bagration died.
There was practically no chance of surviving with the capabilities of medicine at the beginning of the 19th century. Now Bagration, of course, would have been saved by using antibiotics and carrying out a timely operation to clean and disinfect the wound. Maybe they would have saved the leg. There is an opinion that they could have been saved even then. However, history is history. And she does not tolerate the subjunctive mood.
Natural attractions of Yuryev-Polsky
The city is located in the famous Opole, Vladimir region, so there are few forests here. The settlement mainly contains artificial parks. Despite the open area, it is pleasant to walk along the streets here. The weather is characterized by mild, comfortable temperatures; there is no need to hide from the hot sun.
Honeymooners Park
The park was created in 2010 in honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia, symbolizing the example of an ideal family. Now this is one of the most popular places for romantic meetings of young couples. 2 large metal rings connected to each other were installed in the park. The rings bear the inscription “Advice and Love,” which is considered a good wish for a new union.
For a happy family life, newlyweds are recommended to pass through these rings holding hands. Rowan trees with flower beds are planted along the alleys. Walking through the park you can find the “Kissing Bridge”, where couples often take vows of love to each other.
At the "Glade of Brides" flower beds are planted in the shape of a heart. On the wedding day, people always come here for spectacular photographs and necessary rituals. Park address: st. May 1st.
Sandy beach of the Nerl River
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to swim within the city in the summer. The Koloksha River has become quite dirty in recent years, so swimming in its waters is prohibited. Residents are advised to travel outside the city to the Nerl River. The water in the river is clean and warm, where you can relax and refresh yourself after a walk around the city.
To get to the beach you need to go towards Mstislavl. Before reaching the settlement 10 km, there will be a fork. Here you need to turn left, where the village of Petryaikha will be. The beach is on the opposite bank, accessible by bridge. The river is shallow, so children can splash freely. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy their favorite pastime from the bridge.
Park on the territory of the Apraksin estate
The estate is located in the village of Ratislovo. The park has existed since the 18th century. The owners constantly updated the park with unique trees. The alleys are made using a classic style.
There are 8 artificial ponds on the territory, which are interconnected. The park has survived to this day. Residents respect and improve the appearance of bushes and paths along which you can walk at any time of the year.

The cafe serves excellent food that will not leave anyone indifferent.
Store address: st. Krasnooktyabrskaya, 30.
Mahogany carriage
The most important and valuable exhibit of the museum in Yuryev-Polsky is a carriage with the family coat of arms of the Golitsyn princes, on which the wounded Pyotr Ivanovich was transported from Moscow to Sima. Transport at that time was very expensive. For a long time the carriage was on the Golitsyn estate. In the Soviet years, they wanted to use it for its intended purpose, that is, as a means of transportation. However, local residents who honored the memory of Bagration drove the rare item to Yuryev-Polsky and handed it over to the museum, where it remains now in a very worthy and presentable form.

Antique furniture and all furnishings were also transported from the Golitsyn estate in Sima to the museum. These items took their place in the exhibition.

Brave, but not handsome
A ceremonial portrait of General Bagration hangs in the museum. Before us is a handsome Caucasian man (Peter Ivanovich came from an old Georgian family) with large facial features, wild hair, brave and self-confident. However, contemporaries described in their memoirs a man of short stature, with a huge nose, and not distinguished by physical beauty. But ceremonial portraits are just ceremonial to embellish. However, the general really had a lot of courage. And everything else is not so important.

Route for exploring Yuryev-Polsky on your own for 1-2 days
Yuryev-Polsky, whose sights attract many tourists, can be easily explored on your own in 1-2 days. The streets are well-groomed and pleasant, so your walk will be pleasant and eventful. The houses retain the spirit of the old buildings and the decor of that time.
Walking tour 1 day:
- It is worth starting your walk from the preserved bell tower of the Peter and Paul Monastery. The monastery itself is almost completely destroyed. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Peter and Paul have also not been preserved, so you can only see the ruins. But the remains also make up a unique spectacle. There are stairs leading to the bell tower, but you need to climb carefully.
- Having descended from the bell tower, you need to go to the other side. Here is the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, which has existed since the 18th century. Restoration work is currently underway, so you won’t be able to go inside. The entrance is blocked by new forged gates of unique workmanship.
- From here you should head towards the central part of the city. On the way there will be the Church of the Nativity of Christ and Boris and Gleb. The buildings have been almost completely restored. You can go inside and look around. Employees allow photography and filming. The interior decoration is striking in its bright and light appearance.
- Next will be the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Nikita, which has existed since 1796. The building is made of red brick in a classical architectural style. The windows are unusually long, allowing the room to be filled with plenty of natural light.
- The Holy Intercession Church is located nearby. The entrance is through the bell tower. Here you are allowed to simply examine the decorations without a camera.
- A little further there is a shopping center with a small cafe. You can have a snack here. And this is where the inspection ends.
Second day of the walk:
- The tour can be continued from the surrounding area near the shopping center. There are many administrative buildings here, which are strikingly different from the architecture of the ancient city.
- Next there will be a monument to Vladimir Lenin, made in full height. You can take a photo here.
- On the streets of the city you often come across poles with the tricolor of the Russian flag printed on them. This shows the special patriotism of the local residents.
- A little further away there are amazing bus stops, designed in the shape of an interesting tree crown. The benches and the building itself are painted in bright colors and make you look at the city differently.
- Further along are shopping arcades built at the beginning of the 19th century. There is still brisk trade here.
- Then the path goes to the Archangel Michael Monastery, which is protected by ancient ramparts.
- Near the park there is a local landmark - a flower kiosk in the shape of a carriage. A photo with a stall in the background will be remembered for a long time.
- A walk along the alleys of the newlyweds' park provides many panoramic spots for interesting and memorable photographs.
- A little further there is a monument to Yu. Dolgoruky. Behind it are hills and church domes. You can go up and see the whole city.
Bell tower and observation deck
Let's climb the bell tower first. Can i? Of course you can! After all, it is part of a museum exhibition. True, the entrance here is paid, but I think that the price of 50 rubles per person will not seem extortionate to anyone. In any case, she has not yet allowed anyone into the world. In general, the fees for viewing the exhibitions and excursion services here are surprisingly modest.
True, photo and video shooting cost 100 and 200 rubles, respectively.
But we will take photographs for memory and immediately post them on Instagram and other social networks right from the top of the bell tower. Let the colleagues remaining in the office burst with envy. It's your own fault. We invited everyone.
Well, are you ready? Then let's go!
The first test awaits us right at the entrance. The fact is that the entrance door (namely a door, not a door) is only about 120 centimeters high. Why is this done?
Perhaps, so that everyone entering would involuntarily bow at the entrance. Maybe earlier the opening was higher, but the bell tower is gradually sinking into the ground. Over the four centuries of its existence, it could easily have “sunk” in the ground by forty to sixty centimeters. Either way, be prepared to bow upon entering.
Next we will have to walk along a rather steep and narrow staircase. The steps are high, wooden, painted green. It’s good that the arch above your head allows you to straighten up to your full height. Everything is better than in the small minaret of the ancient city of Bolgar near Kazan. There the height from the steps to the vault is one and a half meters. Going up is still okay - you still bend down somehow when climbing. But down... If you're interested, here's an article about this minaret. Look.
In comparison, the staircase to the bell tower of the Yuryev-Polsky Monastery is a comfortable highway. True, in both cases there are no railings. So, if you stumble, you will have to spread yourself, bracing yourself against the opposite walls with your hands and feet, so as not to slide down.
Apparently, the staircase goes inside the wall of the tower. Walls were built before - unlike the ones now. Such staircases and passages inside the walls of ancient buildings are not uncommon.
There are three tiers in the bell tower. We get to the first one almost immediately, just starting to climb. There is a special museum exhibition here - the Monastic Cell. The personal belongings of Archimandrite Pimen are collected here. Of course, during his lifetime his cell was not in this tower. But the museum’s management decided in this way to isolate this exhibition from everything else.
On the second tier there is an exhibition dedicated to bells. It's light and spacious here. Alas, we will not see a large number of bells, as, for example, in the bell tower of the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg, where the famous musical instrument Carillon is installed.
But you can read about the types of bell ringing, find out how, for example, trezvon differs from chime (do you know?), see an exhibition dedicated to the destruction of churches and the throwing of bells from bell towers. Surely for most of the population these were tragic moments.
Here you can find out that bells have been used by people for almost three thousand years. And this is not our invention. Initially, bells appeared in Egypt, Rome, China, and Japan. In Russia, the first church service using bells took place between 353 and 431 AD.
Continuing our climb, we see how the wooden steps give way to brick ones. Previously, the entire staircase was made of cyprich. She is still like that now. It’s just that the steps of the first flights have already become so worn out that it has become unsafe to walk on them. Especially for tourists who do not have the necessary skills.
The upper flights were used less, so the steps were preserved in their original form.
Is it difficult to get to the observation deck? More likely no than yes. In comparison with the tall Venerable Bell Tower in Suzdal, the Yuryev-Polskaya Bell Tower has almost half the height - 32 meters. A modern nine-story panel building has approximately the same height.
Considering that a third of the tower is occupied by a tented dome, we have to climb to a maximum of the sixth floor. It is clear that for some people this is an almost insurmountable obstacle. There is also an option for them: you can put on virtual reality glasses and watch a virtual tour of the entire museum. Including “wandering” around the bell tower.
VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE BELL TOWER
But most visitors reach the top platform sooner or later. Of course, no one will allow us to ring the bells, but the views from the bell tower are wonderful. Although the observation deck is located relatively low, there are no tall buildings nearby. Therefore, the surrounding area can be seen for many tens of kilometers.
It is important that climbing the bell tower is relatively safe. No, you can, without a doubt, kill yourself anywhere if you want. But if I show you this photograph from the Suzdal bell tower, then you will truly understand what the term “dangerous climb” means.
If you want, you can look through the full report, which includes this photo. There is still a lot of interesting things there.
But I showed this photo in order to emphasize that the bell tower of the Yuryev-Polsky Monastery is far from the most risky place. Even children, of course, accompanied by adults, can easily overcome the climb and safely descend back to the sinful surface.
And the height here is not such as to make your head spin and drag down an inexperienced steeplejack. Judge for yourself: only the 5th - 6th floor of an ordinary house. Many now live dozens of floors above.
I’ll say right away that it’s more pleasant on the observation deck in the summer. It's still cool in winter. Especially if the wind is blowing. So, don’t linger, look out all the windows, take a photo as a souvenir. If you have a real camera with a telephoto lens, you can try to “reach” distant distances. Or photograph the roofs of city houses. The bell towers of other temples look great. But in winter, I admit, the picture is somewhat monotonous. Fields, fields, copses, almost no greenery. Everything is covered with snow. It will be more interesting in the summer.
Well? We take a final selfie as a souvenir and begin to descend.
Those who have already made similar adventures know that the descent in this case is more difficult and even dangerous than the ascent. There are no railings. There's nothing to grab onto. The passages are narrow. One consolation is that the stairs are in good condition and well lit.
Now, if you tried to climb the St. George Bell Tower in the city of Pravdinsk, Kaliningrad region, where there are no light bulbs or windows at all, and the steps are not periodic and regular, and then go back down - that would really be an achievement.
But now we have seen the territory from above, clicked dozens of memorable photographs and are ready to immediately continue the adventure.
If the weather is favorable, we are not frozen and are ready for new achievements, I invite you to a circular tour along the ancient earthen rampart that encircles the central part of the city.

And where is the grave?
But she is not in Sim. Bagration's ashes, by order of Emperor Nicholas I, were transferred in 1839 to the Borodino field. The initiative for the reburial belonged to Lieutenant General, poet Denis Vasilyevich Davydov, the prince’s former adjutant. But the misadventures did not end there. During the Soviet years, during the explosion of the Borodino monument (the new government was thus fighting the legacy of tsarism), Bagration’s grave was also damaged, which was at the epicenter of the explosion. And she didn’t just suffer: the museum staff literally collected scattered bones and scraps of the general’s clothing around the area. Even after death, the rebellious and warlike soul of Pyotr Ivanovich could not find peace. Today the burial is in order. By the way, Borodino Field is also a museum that you can visit.
