Shadrinsk was founded in the 17th century, when Russian explorers began to develop Siberian and Far Eastern lands. Under the cover of the walls of the Shadrinsky fort, the banks of the Iset were settled by peasants from the northern and central provinces of Russia. The founder of the settlement is Yuri Malechkin, also nicknamed Yushka Nightingale. Yuri Malechkin sent a petition to Tobolsk, in which he asked the governor for permission to build a fort and settlement on Shadrina Zaimka (1644). In the Remembrance Order for the establishment of the Shadrinskaya Sloboda, Yushka Nightingale was allowed “in the summer of September 7171 (1662) on the 15th day (September 25)” to begin construction. By 1686, Shadrinskaya Sloboda became the largest settlement in Western Siberia. In the settlement there were 137 farmsteads of arable peasants, 10 White Cossacks and 41 dragoons lived.

The status of a historical city was assigned to Shadrinsk on the basis of the Resolution of the Board of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR, the Board of the State Construction Committee of the RSFSR and the Presidium of the Central Council of VOOPIK “On approval of the list of historical places of the RSFSR” in 1990. The city is home to one of the oldest museums in the Urals, founded in 1918 - the Shadrinsky Museum of Local Lore. V. P. Biryukova and the State Archive in the city of Shadrinsk. The basis of the collections was the collection of local historian Vladimir Biryukov.

Under the name Zapolye, the city is described in one of the best works of D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak - the novel “Bread”.

At the beginning it was the largest settlement in all of Western Siberia, and after only 50 years, it was renamed Maloarkhangelsk, Tobolsk district, but it was overtaken by a terrible fire, which again led to the status of a settlement.

Time passed, and with the help of its residents, the settlement was rebuilt and developed rapidly. Then it turned into a city again. Over its long history, it was part of many large regions. And in 1943 it finally became part of the Kurgan region, and is still part of it now. The architecture of Shadrinsk is attractive, reminiscent of the grandiose events of the country; There are many monuments in the city that reflect the greatness and power of the military and workers during the Great Patriotic War, as well as wars and uprisings of past times.

    City `s history

Shadrinsk was founded on the banks of the Iset River as a fort and settlement in 1662. From here came the settlement by Russians of the Iset River valley and its environs. Shadrinsk developed rapidly; for several centuries it was the administrative and commercial center of the Isetsky region. There have been misfortunes in the history of Shadrinsk. So, in 1733, almost all of it burned down in a fire that broke out. However, it was rebuilt again.

Shadrinsk called Zapolye is described in one of the best works by D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak - the novel “Bread”. Shadrinsk a century ago can be seen in photographs by the famous photographer S.M. Prokudin-Gorsky, who visited it during the 1912 expedition along the Kama-Tobolsk waterway that was being designed at that time.

The cathedral consists of a main church and two side churches, as well as an apse - a semicircular altar part. The cathedral is famous for the recent event that took place within its walls, the miracle of the “doubling of the icon.”

Ten years ago, the cathedral servants were cleaning, they took the icon with the image of the Savior to wipe it, and after removing the glass they noticed the imprinted face of Jesus Christ, the same as on the icon. This phenomenon is unusual and interesting.

    Ivan Shadr

The most famous native of the city is the artist and sculptor Ivan Shadr. The real name of this man is Ivanov; he began using the pseudonym Shadr in 1908 in honor of his hometown. This is what he wrote about this: “There are too many of us Ivanovs. You have to somehow distinguish yourself from the other Ivanovs, so I took the pseudonym “Shadr” - from the name of my hometown, in order to glorify it.”

A memorial was created in the city in memory of the famous fellow countryman. One of the exhibitions of the city local history museum is also dedicated to Shadr. Shadr made numerous sculptures (mainly dedicated to the revolution and Lenin), the most famous of which are “Cobblestone - a weapon of the proletariat” and “Girl with an oar”. He also owns the full-scale sculpture “Lenin in the Coffin,” which he created for more than 24 hours, sitting in front of the deceased communist leader.

The Old Town or the Shadrinsky Goose Monument

The most interesting monument in Shadrinsk is the sculptural composition “Old Town”. However, another unofficial name of the composition is better known - the monument to the Shadrinsky goose. It can be seen near the building of the local history museum. The opening of the monument took place in 2008; this is the first work of small architectural forms in this city. You can learn about the history of the Shadrinsky goose in Evgeny Fedorov’s story “The Shadrinsky Goose,” which was published in 1936 and brought fame to this writer. It is curious that Evgeny Fedorov’s work is based on documents he discovered in the archives of the second half of the 18th century.
