Adygea is a tiny republic in southern Russia with huge opportunities for hiking tourism. The natural diversity of Adygea is incredible - steep mountains, wild rivers, alpine meadows and protected forests. It’s worth going here only if you truly appreciate nature and want to take a break from civilization.
I recommend staying in Maykop or the village of Kamennomostsky, as they are located on the only highway in the republic, A-159, along which all the attractions are located. The most convenient way to get around in Adygea is by car, so you can see everything during the day and return to the hotel in the evening.
Lago+Naki=love
Most legends are dedicated to unhappy love. The legend associated with the Lago-Naki plateau is no exception. According to legend, a wealthy Adyghe prince had a beautiful daughter named Naki. The prince owned fat flocks of sheep, which were tended by the shepherd Lago. It so happened that the girl and the boy met and fell in love with each other. The ending of this story was predictable.
The father had already found a noble groom for his daughter when he learned about her secret meetings with a simple shepherd. The prince's anger knew no bounds. Fortunately, the maid managed to warn Nucky about the impending storm. Without hesitation, the young people saddled their horses and galloped away. The chase caught up with them at the very cliff. They had no choice but to hold hands and throw themselves into the abyss. Since then, the beautiful area where this tragic event took place began to be called Lago-Naki.

The Azish Cave is considered a cult attraction of the plateau. A huge underground cavity was discovered in 1910. Its impressive size greatly impressed the discoverers. Today, the length of the section only equipped for excursions is 220 m! Numerous stalactites create an enchanting picture. The temperature inside does not rise above +5 degrees all year round, so you should stock up on warm clothes.

To the north of the plateau there are thermal springs with equipped swimming pools. There are changing rooms, showers, gazebos and rest houses. It is especially pleasant to plunge into hot water in winter when there is snow all around. It is worth visiting the picturesque Guam Gorge, along which a narrow-gauge railway is laid. An excursion train runs from the village of Guamka. You can walk along the gorge along the banks of the Kurdzhips River.
Evening over Lago-Naki
On the way to the plateau, they usually make a stop at the fork in the roads leading to Lagonaki and Guzeripl. The Savranskaya cable car station is located here. Its length is 1250 m. The lift takes tourists to a height of 450 m in 15 minutes. It is worth taking this opportunity to look at the mountain beauty from above. Another panoramic platform is located near the village of Dakhovskaya. There are also great views here. Merchants offer souvenirs, mountain honey, and tea sets made from local herbs.

The waterfalls of the Rufabgo River near the village of Kamennomostsky are beautiful. Paid entrance. Between the waterfalls there are trails with signs - “Cup of Love”, “Three Brothers”, “Noise”, “Maiden Braids” and others. You can spend the whole day here. If you want, you can actually swim. True, they apparently forgot to heat the local water.
There are many spectacular waterfalls in the mountains
Right there, near Kamennomostsky, there is a natural monument called the Khadzhokh Gorge. In fact, this is a narrow, deep crevice that the Belaya River made in the rocks. In some places, the width of the canyon does not exceed two meters, and the depth reaches 40 m. The length of the gorge is no more than half a kilometer. There are observation decks for tourists, from where you can take good photographs.
How to get there
Buses run from Krasnodar to Maykop. Next, from Maykop you should take a bus to the village of Khadzhokh (Kamennomostsky). The distance between them is about 40 km. You will have to get from Khadzhokh to the plateau by taxi or by passing transport. A taxi will cost from 800 to 1500 rubles.
It is much easier to get to the plateau with your own car. Krasnodar and Maykop are connected by the M4 Don highway. Next you need to take the P-254 road to the village of Khadzhokh. After about 7 km there will be a right turn behind it to the bridge over the Belaya River. Around the bend there is a sign “Lago-Naki Plateau 38 km”. An asphalt road will lead to the camp site. The distance from Krasnodar to the plateau is about 200 km.

- ablution room;
- women's room;
- library.
Unlike most mosques, Sobornaya can be visited by representatives of other religions. In this case, it is necessary to follow the established rules:
- You must take off your shoes before entering;
- It is allowed to take photographs inside, without forgetting the feelings of believers.
What to see
For many years, Maykop was considered a historical settlement, but 6 years ago the Ministry of Culture revised its status. Nevertheless, there are so many attractions here that you can select several excursion routes, and their objects will not be repeated.
Since 1952, people have been coming here to visit the Adyghe Republican Balneological Hospital. It is the central point of health tourism in the city. Located in the southern part of Maykop, the Mineral Spring supplies 20 baths with healing water. This volume is enough to serve 700 patients daily. Using highly mineralized liquid, various physiotherapeutic procedures are carried out, including irrigation of the head and organs of the reproductive system.
The National Museum of Adygea, originally located in Krasnodar, presents an extensive ethnographic collection. Here you can get acquainted in detail with different aspects of the life of the republic and its history. The exhibition “Culture and Life of the Circassians” is especially popular. In addition to permanent exhibitions, there are also temporary ones that change approximately once a month.
Maykop is famous for its large number of ancient buildings that have survived to this day. Among them are a gymnasium built in 1903, where a pedagogical school now operates, a malting shop of a brewery - an example of the talent of masons of the beginning of the last century, the Kaplanov apartment building, which became a hotel a century later. The building of Altshuler's pharmacy has been pleasing to the eye since 1889; today the editorial office is located here. Many architectural monuments are currently not in use.
The Oshad mound is a rich archaeological find. Its development began in 1897. Then the height of the embankment reached 11 m, and the burial pit itself went 10 m underground. The dimensions of the mound and its contents indicate that a fairly wealthy citizen was buried there (according to some versions, a royal person). Researchers discovered a large collection of weapons, household items and jewelry inside - all of this is now stored in the Hermitage. Among the property, the remains of his owner were found, accompanied by two servants.
The Maikop Cathedral Mosque is a majestic religious and architectural site of the city, attracting many tourists, even those far from Islam. It is difficult to imagine that the building, which became a symbol of the city, was erected only 16 years ago at the expense of an Arab sheikh. Its impressive dimensions are not at all typical for the Caucasus. Representatives of all faiths are allowed to enter the mosque - this non-standard approach largely determines the increased interest in it.
In the very center of the city is Friendship Square, a memorial complex erected in honor of the 400th anniversary of the union of Adygea with Russia. By the way, the unofficial name of this monument is “Forever with Russia.” In addition, it was here that the White Guards were defeated in 1918, and the dictatorship of the proletariat triumphed.
In the area of the military town "Voskhod" you can see several memorials to Maikop soldiers, in particular those who died in Afghanistan and Chechnya.
Modern ascents to Chugush
Yes, this is quite a popular place among lovers of extreme recreation, for which Adygea is famous. The peak of Chugush, however, was conquered by few, although there were plenty of attempts to storm it.
Numerous routes of different difficulty categories have been laid to its highest points – Dzhemarug and Tybka. Without certain training, appropriate equipment and a guide, even the most comfortable of them should not be climbed - this activity is too risky and unsafe for life.
In addition, one more important detail must be taken into account - this is a protected area where wild animals roam freely, including those dangerous to humans - lynxes and bears. Yes, and to enter the territory of the reserve you need a special pass. So it turns out that in addition to the steep slopes of Chugush, there are many obstacles to a successful ascent.
The most convenient of the climbing routes runs through the Osmanov Valley, which lies at the foot of the mountain. It winds through the dense, silent forest that lies at the bottom of the eastern ridge.
Further on, the road becomes much more difficult, and there are two options for the route, passing along the eastern and southeastern ridges, where the most difficult section of the route is located, leading to the highest point.
The most difficult of the routes runs along the northwestern ridge, where the most dangerous sections are located, fraught with mortal danger even for professionals. This path is so difficult that even the photos are frightening.
