Walk around Yaroslavl for 1 day | Sightseeing route

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

We spent a long time deciding which Golden Ring city to go to for Maslenitsa. Imagination pictured a real Russian holiday in the cold, with pancakes, jokes, folk games and songs. Choosing between ancient cities, we settled on Yaroslavl, since the advertising brochures said that it was in Yaroslavl that the “Main Maslenitsa of the country” was held.

We purchased train tickets to Yaroslavl and booked a hotel (all hotels in Yaroslavl). Initially it was planned that a large company would gather. But the organizers turned out to be the most courageous and “hot”, and in the end four of us went. But nothing prevented us from having fun and useful time: neither frost nor freezing rain, nor any other reasons.

According to the original plan, we were supposed to leave Moscow at 19-30 on Friday, get to Yaroslavl in 3 hours, and calmly check into a hotel. But due to difficulties with work, we separated from our friends: the guys went to Yaroslavl on Friday evening, and we joined them on Saturday in the late afternoon.

Volzhskaya embankment

Volzhskaya Embankment is the decoration of Yaroslavl and a favorite walking place for tourists and local residents.

The entire length of the embankment, which is almost 4 km, is decorated with a carved forged fence on one side. On the other hand, linden trees were planted. In addition to the wide pedestrian path, there are bicycle paths.

The embankment serves as an observation deck from which a beautiful panoramic view opens onto the opposite bank of the Volga, located lower in the relief. The rotunda, built next to Myakushinsky Descent, is a romantic place where newlyweds make dates and take photographs.

Museum events

Winter is the ideal time to explore museum treasures

, familiarization with Russian and world cultures.
Firstly, they are warm, and secondly, they are incredibly interesting. Yaroslavl is no exception in this regard. The historical roots of the city go back to the beginning of the 11th century
, and this is not a ram’s sneeze. Therefore, acquaintance with the historical, picturesque and architectural heritage of the city will not leave anyone indifferent. For more details, see Museums of Yaroslavl.

The collection treasures of the two main museum complexes of Yaroslavl are made up of the most intimate museum exhibits.

This is, first of all, the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve

, the largest historical and architectural exhibition of which is collected on the territory of the former Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, located on Epiphany Square.

Entrance to the Museum-Reserve of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery

Antiquity itself is here! The first handwritten and printed books

(up to “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign”) and archaeological artifacts,
weapons
and military uniforms, ancient
icons
and the nature department,
jewelry
with precious metals and so on.

Exhibits of the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve

The buildings of the monastery themselves, its walls and loopholes, and internal halls are interesting. One day is not enough to see everything and get acquainted with all the exhibits. But there are also interesting modern interactive exhibitions here.

On the territory of the Museum-Reserve

In addition, the Museum-Reserve is in charge of individual Yaroslavl churches, including Ilyinsky on Sovetskaya Square, St. John the Baptist, Rozhdestvensky on the Volzhskaya Embankment, and Epiphany. They are not available for internal inspection in winter, but even their external inspection will leave an unforgettable impression.

Church of the Nativity

the Yaroslavl Art Museum has a rich collection in the field of painting and sculpture

.
Its main collection of works by Russian painters from the beginning of the 18th century is located in the former building of the Governor's Palace. Near Sovetskaya Square there is another branch - the Museum of Western European Painting, and on the territory of the Chopped City, in the Metropolitan Chambers - the Museum of Ancient Russian Art.
In the Hall of the Art Museum in the Governor's House

Visiting all these museum branches is quite interesting. And touching something beautiful really warms you up in bad winter weather and puts you in a positive mood.

City History Museum

(no. 17) is located on the Volzhskaya embankment near the Governor’s House and offers two exhibitions for your acquaintance:
“Ten centuries of the history of Yaroslavl”
and
“From the history of Yaroslavl medicine”
. Both exhibitions are worth a visit.

Exhibitions of the Museum of City History

Museum “Music and Time” has recently become very popular.

(house 33 A).
This is definitely where you need to go! Antique music boxes

(Sobinova, 47).
You can come here with your whole family, touch all the physical and chemical exhibits, conduct experiments with them, etc. If you come to Yaroslavl with school-age children

Museum-Theater "Aleshkino Compound"

By the way, if you are traveling with a child

, then try to sign up for a visit to
the Motherland of Baba Yaga
.
Yes, yes... The birthplace of Father Frost is in Veliky Ustyug, the Snow Maiden is in Kostroma, and Baba Yaga is near Yaroslavl. A visit to the village of Kukoboi
, however, is very problematic, because it is located 160 km from the city, but if you have a car and desire, everything is possible.
Moreover, in addition to the Hut on Chicken Legs
, you can see other attractions of the village there, such as
the Holy Spring
, the Spassky Church,
the Fairy Tale Museum
and the School Museum.

In the homeland of Baba Yaga near Yaroslavl

If you are traveling by car, be sure to visit the Karabikha Museum-Reserve.

, summer dacha
of N.A. Nekrasov
.
It is located only 15 km
from Yaroslavl, and in principle you can get there by bus.
But visiting this ancient estate, which remembers the princes Golitsyn
, and the Russian
poet N. Nekrasov
, who later walked here and wrote poems for our future school curriculum, is very interesting.

Estate "Karabikha"

Fans of cozy memorial museums will also find something to see in Yaroslavl in winter. At their service is the wonderful L. Sobinov House-Museum

“Orpheus of the Russian Stage”
was born back in 1872 .

At the Sobinov Museum

On Poshtovaya Street, 8 there is the Museum “My Favorite Bear”

.
Its visit will be pleasant for both young children
and their grown-up fathers and mothers, because on New Year's holidays you really want to return to childhood and again feel like a child playing with your favorite toy. Some of the bears on display have amazing destinies behind them. There is even Mishka, who went through the Leningrad blockade!

Museum "My Favorite Bear"

Thus, the museum world of Yaroslavl is quite diverse and it is simply impossible to immerse yourself in its aura in one visit, which means there is a reason to come here again.

pros

  • In winter it is impossible to travel, as in summer, with tents in cars. For a comfortable stay you need a warm hotel. Vologda has a sufficient number (more than 40) of guest houses and hotels from budget to expensive options. All are located close to the center, because Vologda is a small capital, with about 300 thousand inhabitants. And you can travel the entire city from beginning to end simply by bus.
  • Taxis are especially important in winter. Tourists in Vologda don’t have to bother too much with buses; taxi prices in the city are more than reasonable. But private operators at the station often deceive tourists and inflate the price for the trip, so it is better to call a taxi through an operator.
  • In winter, the Vologda River turns into one continuous ski track, which will especially appeal to sports enthusiasts. You can also ride around on cheesecakes, which are immediately available for rent. And on New Year's holidays, Father Frost invites children to ride on a sleigh and on a snowmobile. Locals will gladly ride horses, ponies, donkeys and even camels for a small fee.
  • In winter, the river attracts not only lovers of winter fun, but also connoisseurs of winter fishing. If you have the desire and your own fishing rod, you can drill a hole there and go fishing for free. You can ask local fishermen for an ice screw.
  • In winter, the city is decorated with New Year's illumination. And the ancient houses, mansions, temples along the central streets amaze with their mystery and beauty. In the evening the entire city center is in bright lights. According to tradition, on New Year's holidays there are daytime festivities on the two main squares of the city, mummers light a fire in the Kremlin garden and treat everyone to free mulled wine.
  • Vologda museums and galleries will help guests of the city to warm up and have an informative time. Of these, we can highlight the Lace Museum - this is a whole universe woven by the hands of lacemakers. Also in Vologda, most of the existing religious buildings are accessible for visiting in winter. In total there are 63 churches and 12 monasteries in the city.

Where to stay in Yaroslavl

What to see in Yaroslavl for those who come to the city for the first time is a secondary question. First you need to decide where to stay. The best option in terms of price-quality ratio is to rent an apartment daily.

What to see in 2 days in autumn: the best walking routes

Walking in autumn will help you see the splendor of colors and beauty of the city. Start your route from Epiphany Square and explore the monuments and historical buildings preserved here.

Then we go:

  • to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery on Epiphany Square, 25 (prices from 50 rubles);
  • to the Church of Elijah the Prophet (Sovetskaya Square, 7);
  • to the Yaroslavl Strelka (Kotoroslnaya embankment)

Bell music concerts are often held on the embankment.

We go to the Metropolitan Chambers Museum (nearby you will see the ruins of the Volga Tower). Address: Volzhskaya Embankment, 1.

Let's complete our acquaintance with the historical center with a visit to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wet (XVII century) on Tchaikovsky Street, 1.

This autumn walk route will allow you to enjoy the scenery and go indoors from time to time to avoid freezing.

On the second day, go to another part of the city and explore the Tolga Monastery (Tolga village), and check out the zoo on Shevelyukha. This option is suitable for the beginning of autumn, when excursion boats are still operating.

Arrival in Yaroslavl at the railway station

We arrived in Yaroslavl on schedule. We took a taxi from the station for 300 rubles. and went to check into the Ibis hotel, which we had pre-booked. A review of the Ibis hotel in Yaroslavl can be read here. You can book the Ibis here.

We were lucky with the hotel - it was very conveniently located, in the historical center, next to the Kazan Monastery. And the price-quality ratio was also pleasing. After taking a short rest in the room, we decided to meet our friends. By this time they had already walked around Yaroslavl and seen a lot.

The only thing is that by 17 o’clock the body urgently required food. To quickly get rid of the feeling of hunger, we decided to drop into the local Yaroslavl McDonald's on Volkov , with the original name McMaster . The food was very vaguely reminiscent of Makov’s, but from hunger it was a joy.

We decided to meet with friends near the Church of Elijah the Prophet - in the heart of Yaroslavl. From Volkov Square we slowly walked towards our intended goal, looking at the city along the way. In my hands was a detailed map of the center of Yaroslavl, which was very helpful in finding my way around the city (download in pdf Map of the Center of Yaroslavl).

Minuses

  • In winter there are short daylight hours. It gets dark in the city by the beginning of four, and the sun doesn’t even rise until the middle of the horizon. You can walk around the illuminated city center, but it’s better to walk around the districts during the day, while it’s still light.
  • Vologda may be a northern city, but depending on the weather in winter, depending on your luck. And a tourist, instead of snow with trees and buildings dusted with it, can get stuck in a gray snowy mess. It is better for a tourist to take care of good waterproof shoes in advance. Above-zero temperatures in winter are not uncommon in the city.
  • Some attractions are closed. For example, in winter in Vologda a tourist will not be able to visit the St. Sophia Cathedral and climb its bell tower, from where the entire city is visible. This magnificence only works in summer. And for obvious reasons, there are no boat excursions along the river with amazing Vologda landscapes.
  • Although Vologda is famous for its carved palisade, you still need to look for it. And in winter, when it quickly gets dark and everything is covered with snow, it is difficult to find such a landmark. In Vologda, front gardens are gradually becoming a thing of the past, and they are being replaced by modern buildings. Many Vologda ancient wooden buildings and architectural monuments are in deplorable condition and require restoration.
  • The cost of food in Vologda is acceptable, but the high price of gasoline and aggressive driving can confuse tourists. Roads in the suburbs are rough and snowy, increasing the risk of an accident.

What to see in 2 days in winter: the best routes

Walking in winter is often complicated by weather conditions. Therefore, it is preferable to choose a route that involves getting to know the history of the city indoors.

Let's start the route from Sovetskaya Square. On New Year's Eve, a Christmas tree is installed here and the skating rink is filled. Immediately see the temple of Elijah the Prophet.

Along Sovetskaya Street we go to Red Square. An interesting object is a house with an arch (house 21). Continue along this street and you will come to a remarkable distillery building. This option is the best if the weather is favorable without frost or precipitation.

Interesting! Latest news on the situation in Georgia

The second option for a walk route in winter: we go from the Church of Elijah the Prophet to the Boulevard of Peace. The road runs through the Demidovsky Garden and leads to the place from which the history of the city is believed to have begun - the Yaroslavl Kremlin. Once on the territory of the Chopped City, get acquainted with:

  • Museum of Ancient Russian Art;
  • Church of St. Nicholas Rubleny;
  • Elias-Tikhonovsky Church.

In the same area you will see the Foundation Stone of the city. From here you go to Strelka Park. In summer it is very beautiful here, and in winter there are slides and snow towns.

Children will also enjoy visiting the Yaroslavl Theater for Young Spectators (next to the circus) or the Teplo art club.

Excursions

You can get acquainted with the city and its attractions accompanied by a guide. Thus, you will be able to expand your knowledge, learn about local traditions and legends, and also see the most interesting places. Guests are offered many excursion programs.

Where to go with a child

If you come to Kaliningrad in winter with children, then you can have fun not only at the skating rinks. For example, we recommend that you check out your local zoo

. Although the word “look” is not entirely appropriate here, because it is better to plan a trip to the zoo for the whole day. You will also enjoy watching the animals in comfortable spacious enclosures and will also enjoy walking along the numerous bridges and staircases.

Kaliningrad Zoo during the New Year holidays
An original attraction operates in the Yunost park

.
It represents a house in which everything is upside down. The attraction is called “ House Upside Down
”. You will literally walk on the ceiling and admire the furniture that seems to be underneath you. At some point, you may even get a little lost in space, because the surface on which you are moving is also on a slight slope. You and the children will definitely find it interesting and you will certainly take a lot of cool and original pictures.

The house is upside down
So you can and should go to Kaliningrad in winter. History, architecture, museums, entertainment. All this does not disappear anywhere with the end of summer. Moreover, many objects begin to look completely different. Be sure to come here and see for yourself.

On the Moscow-Vorkuta train to Yaroslavl

I must say that buying train tickets to Yaroslavl on Saturday is a big problem. Electric trains do not go there - as the journey is quite long - the fastest train takes about 3.5 hours. We managed to buy tickets for the Moscow-Vorkuta train, which departed at 12:30 (arriving in Yaroslavl at 17:50). Considering the short period of travel time, I bought reserved seat tickets, which I later regretted. The calculation was that there is usually a restaurant car on the train, where you can spend time without stress.

As we entered our carriage, we realized that the trip was going to be “fun”. I haven’t seen such a wrecked train and carriage for a long time: the carriages are old and shabby, I’m generally silent about the toilets. In addition, a large noisy group settled down next to us, who immediately began to drink, eat and play cards. And then they took off their shoes, wet sweaters... and the wind immediately blew us away from the side seats. We go to the dining car. After asking the conductor, we managed to find out that this train only has a “buffet car,” but there was no difference.

The buffet car was half a sleeping compartment car, half a catering room, in which you could have something to eat while standing. Like a Soviet pub. A couple of men were drinking at the Buffet, loudly discussing who was sitting where, under what article and for what period (don’t forget, the Moscow-Vorkuta train).

Approaching the serving window, like in Soviet canteens, we met a gypsy woman. Yes, yes, a real gypsy, though dressed in a modern way. She did not do fortune telling or palmistry, but sold all sorts of women's clothes, such as robes and nightgowns. Here I was able to fully experience the magic of gypsy hypnosis: she began to shower me with compliments, wishing me a long and happy life and the like. In general, I had to fork out money and buy some kind of cotton garbage from her, just so that she would fall behind. It was the only way to get rid of her.

Time flew by almost unnoticed on this fun train. It's good that at least there are no fights.

What to bring as a gift?

In Yaroslavl you can buy souvenirs that you can bring as gifts to your loved ones and friends. Tourists often buy:

Watch "Seagull". Many local stores sell them. Tourists who want to visit the plant can travel to the city of Uglich by car (110 km). Poshekhonsky cheese. This is a delicious gift that everyone will love. You can find it at the market or in grocery stores. Balm “Old Yaroslavl”

This is an alcoholic drink that is produced at a local factory. When choosing, it is important to pay attention to the label so as not to buy a fake. The drink is produced by the liquor store, which is located on Sovetskaya Street. “Yaroslavl felt boots” This is a good gift that every person will like

Valenki are produced at the Yaroslavl felted footwear factory.

Many tourists buy a set of cups with memorable places of Yaroslavl and refrigerator magnets. Sellers can recommend the most popular souvenirs that are given as gifts to loved ones.

Yaroslavl: description, location on the map

Yaroslavl is the main one among the list of cities of the Golden Ring. This is due to its more than thousand-year history, as well as constant development. Yaroslav the Wise immediately appreciated the land between the Volga and Kotorosl, which belonged to the pagans. He saw in it strategic potential, both for defense and trade.

You won’t be able to see all the sights of Yaroslavl in 2 days, even by car

However, taking it away from the pagans living in this territory was not easy. According to legend, he had to fight a brown bear. Now the figure of a bear is a symbol of the city. Currently, Yaroslavl attracts tourists with its ancient Russian history and architecture, and pilgrims with a large number of shrines and temples.

The main attractions of Yaroslavl: what you need to see in 1 day

The sights of the city are associated with the founder of the city - Grand Duke Yaroslav the Wise, the people's militia of Minin and Pozharsky (it was in Yaroslavl that their formation center was located, where the militia printed Russian coins and went to fight in Moscow against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders), the first professional Russian drama theater, and there is also an infinite number of churches in the city. And the churches are all different, you can easily find your favorite one to suit your taste and color.

I liked the red ones the most:

And in the city there are beautiful Kotoroslnaya and Volzhskaya embankments, cozy Gazebos built for the 975th anniversary of the city, the Yaroslavl Strelka and an entire amusement park on Damansky Island.

If you find yourself in Yaroslavl in the summer, then go to the River Station and take a boat ride on the Volga. They say that the water offers a particularly beautiful view of Yaroslavl. The river station in Yaroslavl is located nearby, 5 minutes from Red Square, next to the monument to Nekrasov. Advice from the blog author

Visiting Yaroslavl churches

Yaroslavl - a city of ancient history

and temple domes.
There are, perhaps, so many preserved church buildings in no other city.
twenty
churches alone dating back to the 17th century
in Yaroslavl . Simply listing them will not give anything, and a detailed description will take up a lot of space.

Winter's Tale of the Church of Elijah the Prophet

Some temples are active, some are not, some are open, some are closed to visitors during the winter. It is clear that when visiting the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, you will not pass by the Spassky Cathedral, located in it, and the Church of the Epiphany, located nearby on the square.

Epiphany Church and Monument to Yaroslav the Wise

Walking along the small and few streets of winter Yaroslavl, you will come across other temple buildings. Each of them is beautiful from an architectural point of view and interesting from a historical point of view. We mentioned some of them above in the list of various walking routes. For more details, see Temples of Yaroslavl. In winter decoration they are all unusually beautiful and mysterious. And even if you don’t manage to get inside many of them, this will only be a reason to return to Yaroslavl in the summer!

Winter trip for relaxation and health, part 1: Yaroslavl

New Year's holidays are not the best time to travel. The weather at this time is unpredictable: frosts can give way to thaws, and a sunny day can soon turn into a snowstorm. In addition, there are quite a lot of people everywhere - it’s the holidays! However, there is another component of these days: the cities are colorfully decorated, and the New Year mood reigns everywhere.

In the new year 2015, my old friend Yulia and I made a wonderful trip along the route Yaroslavl - Vologda - Rybinsk (Demino ski resort). At the same time, the purpose of the trip was very unusual: not only to see new places and relax, but also to bring health benefits. Moreover, Yulia is now on a Bormenthal diet, which requires very serious attention to preparing and eating food. Therefore, this time we passed by all sorts of cafes and restaurants that so often attract tired travelers, preferring our own food. In addition, our trip schedule included a visit to spa salons in each city - we wanted to clean our feathers and generally get ourselves in order. We also did not ignore the shops - prices were lower than in Moscow.

I really liked this format. We not only saw new places and sights, but also came home noticeably rested and better looking.

Well, now let's talk about everything in order.

January 3, 2015

Not very early in the morning of January 3, 2015, we left home. Dmitrovskoe highway, Malaya betonka, Yaroslavskoe highway - an excellent road. A few hours later we were in Yaroslavl. We stayed at the Pastukhov Academy Guest House (Respublikanskaya Street 42/24, Yaroslavl), in the historical center of the city. The main attractions are just a stone's throw away. The hotel turned out to be very cozy. Perhaps the only negative is the very spartan breakfast. And no elevator.

We devoted the evening to a walk around the city - the Volga embankment, Strelka. It was quite cold, but beautiful.

The next day we had a visit to the spa planned. Before and after this - walks around Yaroslavl. We left the inspection of museums and monasteries for another time. This time I just wanted to feel the city, wander through its streets, and look at the people. This format of the trip is very convenient: there is not even a latent desire to see everything in a short time. Therefore, there is no running around. Hence - peace and tranquility. We went to the market and bought amazingly delicious honey and cottage cheese.

We chose the spa based on reviews on the Internet and proximity to our hotel. As a result, we settled on “Aquamarine” (Yaroslavl, Respublikanskaya str., 7, 4th floor, Flagman shopping center). I did a full range of facial treatments - massage, masks; Julia ordered a body massage. We were both very pleased, and our refreshed faces immediately put us in a fighting mood. Walking is like walking. And we went shopping.

Here I foresee the dissatisfied grimaces of my fellow travelers - how is this, banal shopping instead of getting to know the city. I’ll say right away that before I would have grinned contemptuously too. But, in the end, we went not only for impressions, but also for beauty. And the shopping was a great success.

And the next day the road to Vologda awaited us.

Continuation of the trip story:

  • Winter trip for relaxation and health, part 2: Vologda
  • Winter trip for relaxation and health, part 3: Demino and Rybinsk

Did I like winter Yaroslavl? There was no clear opinion. The evening city, illuminated by lights, covered with fluffy snow, is very beautiful. But during the day everything seemed gray and homeless.

UPD. In May I visited Yaroslavl again. And the city captivated me with its beauty.

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery

Address: Bogoyavlenskaya Square, 25 Opening hours: from 8.30 to 18.00, except Monday Telephone

This is the oldest building in Yaroslavl, located in the very center. Before the revolution, there was a repository of ancient manuscripts and books here. Once upon a time, the only surviving copy of “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” was discovered here.

For a long time, this monastery played the role of the Kremlin, owning many surrounding villages and being a spiritual and economic center. Ivan the Terrible alone gave him more than 200 villages. In the 16th century, the monastery, built of wood, suffered from a fire; later it was rebuilt from stone, following the example of some cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin.

Here you can admire wall frescoes dating back almost a thousand years and pray at ancient icons. There is an exhibition at the monastery where visitors are introduced to ancient Russian art and ancient sculpture. You can even visit the cells where monks lived in the Middle Ages.

The Transfiguration Cathedral, which is the center of the monastery, is open to visitors only from May 1 to October 1.
