As part of the training organized by the state development corporation VEB.RF for management teams of one hundred Russian cities, the Armavir delegation led by Mayor Andrei Kharchenko presented a program for the development of Armavir. Its development was preceded by an analysis of the current state of the economy, spatial structure, infrastructure resources and problems, which was carried out jointly with specialists from the Higher School of Economics and the moderator of the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo.

“It was participation in the development program of VEB.RF and the Skolkovo business school that largely allowed us to take a fresh look at the prospects of Armavir, to move away from some stereotypes in management,” said the head of the city, Andrei Kharchenko. “In particular, the development to date Armavir took place separately, as an independent administrative unit. But it was the development program of VEB.RF and the Skolkovo business school that helped us see that Armavir today should be considered as the center of gravity of the agglomeration, which historically developed around the city and has about a million residents. Accordingly, the economic development of the city must be planned taking into account this factor, because it is within the agglomeration that today there are many resources that can be used in the economy of Armavir. Currently, the city team, together with urban communities, has worked out priority projects for the development of Armavir, influencing positive changes in the lives of citizens and improving the socio-economic situation in the city.”

The importance of the city in the modern world

Armavir is located in the south of Russia in the Krasnodar region. With nearby settlements it forms a municipality with the status of the urban district of Armavir. It has the status of a city of regional subordination, part of the Krasnodar region of the Russian Federation. Armavir is located about 200 km from Krasnodar and 1.4 thousand km from Moscow.

The area of the city is 280 km², the height of its center above sea level is about 200 m. Geographic coordinates of the city: 44.9892 north latitude and 41.1234 east longitude or 44°59′21″ north latitude. and 41°07′24″ E. Local residents celebrate the City Day holiday on September 15.

Armavir is located on the left bank of the river called Kuban, in the place where the river flows from the northern foothills. It is located between the Black and Caspian seas, at the confluence of one of the largest tributaries called Urup. Thus, the Greater Caucasus Mountains are formed, which, together with the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, form a single system of mountains in the region.

Armavir, whose sights attract numerous tourists, was founded in 1839. Until 1848, the settlement was called “Armenian village”. From 1848 to 1876 it was called “Armavir village”. From 1876 to 1914 it was called the village of “Armavir”, and only in 1914 the settlement received city status.

Note!

Currently, the entire Krasnodar region is famous for the huge amount of useful resources that are mined in the surrounding area.

Rebooting the city

The city development program was called “New Armavir”, which speaks for itself. Armavir residents are facing global changes, essentially a reboot of economic, social and cultural life. Armavir should become a center of attraction for seven municipal districts of Kuban with a total population of 1 million people. “Today we are betting on rebooting the city’s economy through the creation of New Armavir - a city with new principles of economic structure and with new, higher standards of quality of life, which will be attractive to both residents and investors. To solve this problem, we need to include new territories in the city development process, where we will have to design and build a new type of city - New Armavir,” said the mayor of the city.

Armavir is the fourth most populous city in Kuban with a developed diversified economy, which is a major transport hub and gateway to the North Caucasus. The city's economy has a pronounced commercial and industrial profile, which is facilitated by its favorable location. The largest share in the basic volume of the urban economy belongs to the consumer market and services (share of 62%), as well as the industrial complex (26%). The share of construction in the urban product is 9%.

The city is the center of an agglomeration that historically developed around it and, in addition to Armavir, includes seven municipal districts (Novokubansky, Uspensky, Otradnensky, Gulkevichsky, Labinsky, Kurganinsky, Mostovskoy districts). The total population of the agglomeration is about a million inhabitants.

According to Andrey Kharchenko, for the further development of industry and business, to attract investors and expand existing enterprises, new territories are needed. There are them in the city: 754 hectares - for industrial development and 550 hectares - for integrated housing construction and the creation of social infrastructure. The primary task is to provide these areas with electricity, gas, heat, and roads.

“A serious barrier that does not yet allow the use of these territories is their low provision of engineering and technical infrastructure. And without this, no investor will come to this territory. Our main task is to solve this problem and include new territories in the city’s economy, providing them with the necessary infrastructure and energy resources,” noted Andrey Kharchenko.

Support has already been received

According to preliminary estimates, the cost of the New Armavir program is 52 billion rubles. According to the mayor of the city, there is an understanding of the need for its implementation on the part of the regional authorities. “The region supports the development of the city. The leadership of Kuban also sees the development of Armavir exclusively as an agglomeration center with a population of 1 million inhabitants. At the same time, the program presented by the municipality is synchronized with the main goals and objectives of the strategy for the socio-economic development of Kuban for the period until 2030,” concluded Andrei Kharchenko.

The Minister of Economy of the Krasnodar Territory, Alexey Yurtaev, has already proposed studying the program and submitting proposals for its regional support from ministries and departments of the Kuban administration. “We count on state and regional support within the framework of state programs and investments from resource supply organizations. An important area of work should be interaction with potential investors. The administration of the municipality will have to attract them precisely for those development projects that are provided for by the program, allocate land plots, provide the necessary conditions and accompany the projects, providing assistance to investors at all stages. Participation in the program undoubtedly taught us not only to make plans for further development, but also to find reserves and sources for their implementation. Therefore, we are already imagining through what financial and investment mechanisms we will implement the New Armavir program,” noted the head of the city.

Almost half of the required investments - more than 23 billion rubles. — the city plans to attract private investors. “In addition, we expect that VEB.RF will be interested in some projects and will take part in them as an investor,” concluded Andrey Kharchenko.

Development of Armavir

The population growth was due to the arrival of new settlers, most of whom were engaged in agriculture. But even then the main occupation of the village residents was trade. They made trading journeys, which were very dangerous and cost their lives for many. The main enemies of the Armenians were the Circassians; they often attacked merchants, robbed and killed them. But trade brought great income for the development of the city, so it was impossible to abandon it. It was then that the development of culture began.

When the war ended, capitalist relations began to develop in Armavir, and many reforms were carried out. Reforms aimed at restoring agriculture were of primary importance. Throughout the war they had to live under the threat of attack, so time was spent on strengthening and defense. But, despite this, the population of Armavir only grew.

Basic moments

Armavir owes its foundation to the Orthodox mountain Armenians (Circassians). In the 19th century, after Islam began to actively spread among the mountaineers, they moved closer to Russian settlements. Over time, the small Armenian village turned into one of the large regional centers. Today, despite the history of the city's origins, 90% of its population are Russians. There are about 9% of Circassian descendants here, but, nevertheless, there is an Armenian school in Armavir, and believers visit the Armenian Gregorian temple. Almost all local restaurants are owned by Armenians, so the Caucasian accent is clearly evident in most culinary establishments.

Residential buildings from the times of the Russian Empire have been preserved in large numbers in the city center. Among the pre-revolutionary buildings, the mansions of Armenian entrepreneurs stand out, who made a fortune in the textile trade in Armavir and became the richest people in the region. Many buildings in the city were damaged during the Great Patriotic War. The memory of the defenders and liberators of the city is preserved by monuments and memorials located in parks and squares. In Armavir you can also see remarkable modern monuments and original sculptures.

In the warm season, the city is surrounded by greenery. Cypresses, plane trees, maples, chestnuts give Armavir a special charm and provide coolness on hot summer days. In well-kept parks, the air is saturated with the aromas of conifers, boxwood, blooming azaleas, and exotic flowers. The surrounding areas of the city are also picturesque, along the banks of the fast rivers Kuban and Urup, lakes and ponds. In the forest, near reservoirs, you can relax at camp sites, where comfortable cottages are provided and fishing is organized.

History of Armavir

In the 15th century, an ethnic group of Armenian migrants settled on the territory of the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Adygea, whose self-name became the term “Circassogai”. They are also known as Circassian, mountain Armenians. The settlers adopted the morals, customs, way of life, and linguistic features of the speech of the Circassians, but remained committed to the Orthodox faith. The Circassians perceived the spread of Islam in these lands at the end of the 18th century as a threat to the national religion, and the clergy of the Armenian Church turned to Catherine II with a request for their resettlement to the Russian Empire. But the implementation of this initiative became possible only in the 30s of the last century.

In 1839, the commander of the Kuban cordon line, Major General Gregory von Sass, ordered the soldiers of the Tengin infantry regiment to escort 42 families of mountain Armenians to the border territory, to the flat region of the Kuban. Here, on the banks of the river of the same name, opposite the Prochny Okop fortress and the village of Prochnookopskaya, a small settlement arose. The Russians called it the Armenian village, and the surrounding highlanders called it the village of infidels (infidels). The waterway became a natural border for the village, and as a land defense they built a rampart and a ditch 2.5 m wide. A man-made defensive barrier surrounded the settlement on three sides. A wooden gate was installed on the line, where guards were constantly stationed.

The village changed its borders more than once due to newly arriving settlers. By 1840, the number of Armenian families increased to 400. In the new place, the Circassian people did not change their usual way of life. They settled in large families on a selected piece of land, and each small quarter belonged to one clan or another. In 1848, local residents and the Stavropol priest Petros Patkanyan asked the Catholicos of All Armenians to petition for the name “Armavir” to be given to the village - in honor of the ancient capital of the Armenian (Ayrarat) kingdom. That same year, their initiative was approved.

Over time, in addition to Armenians, Russian artisans, Cossacks, Greeks, Germans, Georgians, and Bulgarians began to settle in Armavir. In 1876, the aul received the status of a village and the administrative center of the Caucasus district. Soon the first metalworking enterprise in Kuban opened here. In Armavir, the merchants Bogarsukovs, who became rich from trading in manufactured goods, and the merchants Torosyans, who renamed themselves Tarasovs and became one of the richest families in the Russian Empire, laid the foundation of their fortune.

In 1875, the railway connected Armavir with Vladikavkaz, and at the beginning of the last century - with Tuapse and Stavropol. Having become a major railway junction, the village grew and developed. Schools, men's and women's gymnasiums, a theater, a circus, a cinema, and fashion stores were opened here. Local residents, who became rich, built elegant mansions, and electric lighting appeared on the streets. By 1914, Armavir earned the status of a city.

During the civil war, power in Armavir changed several times, until in 1920 the White Guards were finally pushed back by units of the Red Army. During that turbulent period, the city minted its own copper banknote - the Armavir ruble, today well known to numismatists.

In the 30s, plants and factories were built in Armavir, theaters were opened, and a city garden was laid out. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, about 100,000 people lived in the city. In 1942, Armavir was captured by German troops trying to break through to the Black Sea in the Tuapse region. During the defense and then during the liberation in 1943, the city experienced catastrophic destruction. Armavir was one of the most affected settlements in the North Caucasus. However, by the 50s its almost destroyed historical center was rebuilt.

In the early 2000s, large-scale improvement work began in Armavir. Here, old areas were expanded and reconstructed, and new ones were built. Since 2013, an important strategic facility has been located in the vicinity of the city - a radar station that controls the airspace from Southern Europe to North Africa.

Geography and climate

The Armavir urban district is located in the southeast of the Krasnodar Territory, on both banks of the Kuban River, in the place where the fast waters of the Urup flow into it. From the bridge over the Kuban, the features of the local landscape are clearly visible. The left bank, on which the main part of Armavir extends, is flat land. The steep right bank, where the industrial zone is located, Staraya Stanitsa (formerly the village of Prochnookopskaya), approaches the northern spurs of the Greater Caucasus. The distance from Armavir to the Stavropol plateau is less than a kilometer, and from the windows of the upper floors of city high-rise buildings in clear weather you can see the silhouette of Elbrus.

The floodplain of the Kuban occupies about a tenth of the urban district. This river and its tributary Urup are typical mountain streams. In spring and summer, during the period when the snows of the Greater Caucasus melt, they become most abundant in water. The banks of the rivers, with their rather fast flow, are not well-maintained due to frequent floods. The main beach holiday destination for local residents is the city reservoir and surrounding ponds. About a 25-minute drive from Armavir there are drainless Salt Lakes with hydrogen sulfide and iodine-bromine water.

The federal highway “Caucasus”, one of the main transport arteries of Russia, runs in close proximity to the city. Within its boundaries, railway lines of two directions intersect. The line "Rostov-on-Don - Mineralnye Vody - Makhachkala" passes through residential areas and divides the urban area into two parts, and is adjacent to the line "Armavir - Tuapse - Sochi". The city is separated from Krasnodar by 220 km, from Sochi by 375 km, and by Tuapse by 260 km.

The relative proximity of the Black Sea, the Stavropol Upland and the approaching foothills of the Greater Caucasus determine the changeable climate of Armavir. It is often windy here, and eastern air currents sometimes cause dust storms. In summer, the winds in the city are predominantly from the west, and in winter from the northeast. In November-December, wind speed can reach 25-35 m/s. Most of the precipitation falls in the warm season; short, intense downpours are common in summer. There are about 70 foggy days a year here, the cold season accounts for about a third of them. Air humidity is on average 75%.

Winter in Armavir is usually mild, with short-term negative temperatures. The coldest month is January, with average temperatures of -5...0 °C. Extremely rare, but severe frosts down to –20 °C do occur. In winter, snow and rain periodically replace each other, so snow cover does not form.

In March, the city is still cool: +7…+11 °C. By the end of April, the air warms up to +18...+20 °C during the day, and by the end of May - to +21...+23 °C. Summer here is hot; in July and August, daytime temperatures often exceed +30 °C.

Autumn usually begins to make itself known only in the last days of September, when the thermometer drops below 20 degrees. For most of October, a comfortable +15..+18 °C reigns in Armavir. By the end of this month it gets colder to +7...+12 °C, and approximately the same temperature is maintained until the last ten days of November, when it is already +4...+7 °C.

Sights of Armavir

Armavir consists of 8 districts. Modern neighborhoods are not much different from each other, but the historical part of the city is quite interesting. Many pre-revolutionary buildings have been preserved here, organically adjacent to later buildings.

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the city acquired a distinctive appearance, thanks to the unique architectural techniques that were used during construction. A characteristic feature of local mansions was the decor of the corner risalits of the facades. They were decorated with onion-shaped domes. About a dozen such buildings have survived to this day. Among them are a bakery and a family residence with retail premises of baker Taras Sarkisov, at the intersection of Efremov and Komsomolskaya streets. The old mansion has been carefully restored. It is a striking example of a commercial, industrial and residential building of a wealthy citizen of the early last century.

On Rosa Luxemburg Street, laid where the defensive line of the Circassian village once passed, the manor house of Pelageya Kandidatova attracts attention. Its main architectural feature is also a semicircular corner projection, which is completed by a turret topped with a dome. The mansion on Lenin Street, 141 was built in the same architectural style.

Another feature of the pre-revolutionary houses of Armavir was the active use of forged and cast elements in their decor. An abundance of balconies, parapet grilles, metal umbrellas and awnings over porches is typical for the exteriors of houses in many cities in this region of Russia. However, it was in Armavir that figurines of fairy-tale characters were included in the casting plots. Probably, this idea originated with one of the local blacksmiths and became fashionable.

Most of the houses with original cast parts have been preserved on Kirova Street, the main artery of the city. At its intersection with Komsomolskaya there is a former apartment building of the Bogarsukov brothers, who were among the largest entrepreneurs in the South of Russia. The three-story building, erected in 1914, became the largest in Armavir. Made in the style of rational modernism, it was intended for a theater, luxury hotel and restaurant, and fashion stores. The most expressive architectural feature of the building was the hanging balcony galleries bordering the entire façade on two levels. Their intricate wrought-iron decor intertwined floral patterns, and the balconies were connected by elegant iron columns.

During the Great Patriotic War, the building was damaged by bombing. It was restored only in the 60s, but during the work the luxurious wrought-iron balconies were cut off. Their miraculously surviving fragments now form part of the fence of a small airport in the surrounding village of Krasnaya Polyana. Today, within the walls of the mansion there is a mechanical engineering college. The building has practically lost its historical appearance, but remains the hallmark of the city.

On Kirov Street there are also several houses with facades decorated with tamgas - family signs of the Circassian people. Original geometric figures are another feature of the Armavir mansions, which belonged to wealthy native Armenians.

The historical buildings of Kirov Street include a pharmacy and two houses of the local pharmacy pharmacist, the German Viktor Karlovich Wilde. These buildings appeared here at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Vilde Pharmacy, the oldest in Armavir, is known to many generations of townspeople and is a local landmark. The decoration of its façade is remarkable for its compositional combination of Baroque and Art Nouveau elements.

One of the most important and oldest religious landmarks of the city is also located on Kirova Street. This is the Armenian-Gregorian Church (or the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin). The stone structure began to be erected in 1844 on the site of a burnt church, one of the first buildings in the Armenian village. The temple was consecrated in 1861. After the revolution, it remained operational, but a food warehouse was located in part of the premises. Then the authentic frescoes and paintings created according to the Armenian-Gregorian canons were significantly damaged. Today they are being restored by artists.

In Armavir, the building of a pre-revolutionary Sunni mosque, built on the initiative of the Kazan Tatar community, has also been preserved. The colorful but deteriorating building is located on Pugacheva Street. It now houses several residential apartments.

The only Orthodox church that has survived in the city since pre-revolutionary times is the Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity. The building was built in 1916. In 2004, the St. Nicholas Church, destroyed in the 30s of the last century, was revived in Armavir. With its elegant appearance it resembles a ruined church. Like her, the temple has 9 domes. Eight of them are gilded, and the ninth chapter is painted dark blue and decorated with gold stars. The temple has the status of a cathedral.

Entertainment

The city is home to one of the oldest stage venues in the Krasnodar region - the Armavir Drama and Comedy Theater, founded in 1908. His repertoire includes classical and modern works. The theater is located on Lenin Street, 84. Not far from it, in building No. 114, the Armavir Museum of Local Lore is located. In this modest pre-revolutionary mansion you can view a collection of paleontological finds and archaeological artifacts excavated by archaeologists on the territory of the Kuban. The museum also houses a collection of gold Scythian and Sarmatian jewelry and Polovtsian stone sculptures. An important part of the museum exhibition is weapons from the times of the Caucasian, Civil, and Great Patriotic Wars. It is worth visiting the ethnographic collection, household items, and furniture from the 19th-20th centuries. The museum also displays ancient icons and paintings, including sketches by Mikhail Nesterov.

Another popular place for outdoor recreation among city residents is the 30th Anniversary of the Victory Children's Park.

In summer it is nice to relax by the water. Near the City Grove Park there is a reservoir where locals like to swim. The area near the reservoir has been landscaped. Trees were planted here, lawns were laid out, and grounds for playing volleyball, basketball, and mini-football were built.

There are no equipped beaches on the picturesque banks of the Kuban River, but townspeople often go to these places for a picnic. On the gentle bank of Urup, near the villages of Zavetny and Pervomaisky, in the summer you can relax in tents. 15 km from Armavir, in the Novokubansk region, there are ponds where it is pleasant not only to swim, but also to go fishing.

In a dense forest, not far from the Kosyakino farm, there are the Big and Small salt lakes. In the first reservoir, the water is hydrogen sulfide, with a very high concentration of salt; no living creatures live in it. But Small Lake with iodine-bromine water is an excellent place for fishing. You can get from Armavir to the Salt Lakes in 40 minutes. Townspeople come here to swim and also for health treatments: there is healing mud on the lake bottom. Vacationers get it using homemade devices, some dive for healing silt. There is no infrastructure on the muddy shores of the Salt Lakes; you can enter the water via rickety bridges.
