Novomoskovsk (Tula region) - overview of attractions

220 km from the capital of Russia in the Tula region, in the Don and Volga basin, lies the wonderful city of Novomoskovsk, founded in 1930. Initially, Novomoskovsk bore the name Stalinogorsk and only in 1961 received its modern name.

Despite the fact that Novomoskovsk is not a major tourist center, it is very rich in interesting places to visit. It perfectly combines magnificent monuments of culture and science, religious shrines, as well as historical monuments created by the work and art of our ancestors.

A visit to Novomoskovsk will give pleasure and a lot of impressions to both adults and children - after all, there is where to go and what to see!

Toy railway

One of the most striking attractions of the city is the railway for children, located in the city's Children's Park. It is recognized as the best children's railway in our country and is rightfully the pride of Novomoskovsk.

The children's railway first appeared in 1953, having undergone several reconstructions and modernizations of the train and the railway track over all the years of its existence. Now it is a branch of Russian Railways.

The entire infrastructure here is made for maximum comfort for children: small carriages, the walls of which are decorated with cartoon characters, small comfortable chairs. Music plays in the carriages and on the platforms.

But at the same time, everything here is arranged in an adult way: trains give signals, there is a schedule, there are benches at stations for waiting, railway switches are switched.

Since the railway is a children's railway, all duties are performed by children - middle and high school students who have undergone special training.

The length of the railway creates a two-kilometer ring around the Children's Park, and the route passes through one station and two platforms.

The railway is conveniently located almost in the city center next to various attractions and other entertainment for children. A visit to it will be a real holiday not only for children, but also for adults.

Location: Berezhny street - 1A.

Source of the Don River

Not everyone knows that the oldest river in Russia, the Don, originates from a small stream located in the Children's Park of Novomoskovsk, not far from the Children's Railway.

A three-dimensional sculptural composition called “The Source of the Don” was erected next to the stream. The sculpture represents two naked boys, one of whom holds a bronze disc, riding horses, looking at the sun and smiling happily.

The monument seems to symbolize the beginning of a long journey: boys on horseback are ready to rush far, far away, like the fast Don carrying its waters far to the south.

Behind the architectural ensemble there is a large stone on which is written “Source of the Don River”, from under which a stream flows - the beginning of the legendary river.

“The Source of the Don River” is the hallmark of Novomoskovsk, attracting tourists and city guests to look at where the great Don originates.

Holy Dormition Monastery

The Holy Dormition Monastery was founded in 1995 by decree of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The monastery is an interesting architectural ensemble that organically fits into the appearance of the city, on the territory of which the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary were built.

The Holy Dormition Monastery houses the relics of saints such as Nicholas the Wonderworker, John Chrysostom, and the blessed prince Alexander Nevsky.

The Icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost” is the main shrine of the monastery. Believers from all over Russia come to venerate the shrine.

Having sunk, the car lay for almost half a century at the bottom of the Shatsky reservoir and, on the initiative of a participant in the Great Patriotic War, Yu.A. Nikishin, was pulled to the surface in 1988 by a group of enthusiasts.

The legendary combat installation took part in the Victory Parade in 2015, after which it was returned.

What kind of air do residents of Novomoskovsk breathe?

A meeting of the interdepartmental environmental commission was held in the administration of Novomoskovsk, chaired by the head of the administration Alexei Biryulin. The Tula regional public organization “Ecological Protection” raised a number of problems and issues important for the city’s ecology. The work of the interdepartmental environmental commission was attended by the head of the Prioksky interregional department of Rosprirodnadzor Alexander Bogush, the head of the Novomoskovsk territorial department of the Rospotrebnadzor Office for the Tula region Nikolai Mikhalyuk, the chairman of the commission on ecology and environmental protection of the Public Chamber of the Tula region, the chairman of the TROO "Ecological Protection" Vadim Baranov, representatives the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Tula Region, the city prosecutor's office and industrial enterprises. The main issue on the agenda was a report on the work being done to reduce emissions of pollutants into the air and environmental protection measures. As was announced at the meeting, during the period from June to August 2022, a large number of complaints from city residents were received regarding odors of chemical origin, burning, organic matter and manure. In particular, in July and August, numerous complaints from residents of the microdistrict. Sokolniki reported smells of burning and organic matter mainly at night and in the morning, when the wind was from the west. During the work carried out by representatives of TROO “Ecological Protection”, it was established that the source of the odors was fires and long-term smoldering of chicken droppings at the site of JSC Krasnobor. In this regard, ecologists and the city administration sent appropriate requests with information to the environmental supervision authorities. The chief engineer of Krasnobor, Alexander Morozov, spoke at the meeting. A representative of the enterprise told what steps are being taken to improve the environmental situation and prevent smoldering processes - extinguishing with water and spreading manure with soil. It is worth noting that at the beginning of this week, representatives of TROO “Ecological Protection” together with the Volunteer Search and Rescue Team “Poisk 71” went to the territory of the poultry farm. Using a drone equipped with a thermal imager, it was found that as a result of the measures taken, there were significantly fewer smoldering spots, but they still remained. Vadim Baranov recommended that the Krasnobor management turn to specialists in extinguishing peat fires, because when the fire occurs in the inner layers, it is extremely difficult to extinguish it from the outside. Alexander Morozov also touched upon another important topic. According to him, at the moment the company’s priority is to create closed production cycles, which will significantly reduce the negative impact of harmful production factors and the volume of emissions. Let us recall that last winter JSC Krasnobor already became a source of unpleasant odors and, as a result, numerous complaints from residents of Novomoskovsk. Then the smells came from the turkey bedding drying workshop. The company is currently working to modernize the treatment equipment in this workshop. Chief Sanitary Doctor Nikolai Mikhalyuk spoke about the current environmental situation in the municipality. Atmospheric air studies in Novomoskovsk are carried out at six points in the city using 8 ingredients. In total, over the past period of 2022, 96 studies of atmospheric air were carried out as part of social and hygienic monitoring. According to Nikolai Mikhalyuk, no excesses of hygienic standards for the tested substances were detected. At the same time, representatives of TROO “Ecological Protection” have repeatedly stated that the amount of substances being measured is insufficient, given the multicomponent air pollution in Novomoskovsk. In addition, Vadim Baranov drew special attention to the imperfection of the system for warning enterprises about unfavorable weather conditions, under which production capacity should be reduced. The head of the Prioksky interregional department of Rosprirodnadzor, Alexander Bogush, addressed representatives of large industrial enterprises present at the meeting. He stated the need for strict compliance with environmental legislation and measures to reduce emissions of pollutants into the air.

The war destroyed almost all cultural and industrial buildings. In memory of the great tragedy, residents on the site of mass graves created a Memory Park in the Urvan Forest. It houses the Sculpture of the Mother. There is also a memorial to those who fell in the Great Patriotic War, where the names of the soldiers who fought for their homeland are carved. Next to the monument “Eternal Glory”, depicting a wounded warrior and his two comrades, brave defenders, brothers and friends, burns an eternal flame of memory and sadness for the departed warriors. History of the Istok Don complex

The architectural complex was built on the territory of the Children's Park for a reason. The Urvanka stream flows in this area, which is actually mistaken for the source of the Don River. This is where the name of the natural-architectural complex “Source of the Don” came from.

For a long time, the territory within which the source of the Don is located was not properly developed. Only almost 60 years after the founding of Novomoskovsk, the question arose about organizing a park area at the site where the source is located.

Work on the construction of the architectural and park complex began in the second half of 1989. The grand opening of the “Source of the Don” took place in 2000 and was conventionally timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the founding of Novomoskovsk.

What to see

There are several main attractions on the territory of the architectural complex. The first of the significant ones is a huge stone with the inscription “Source of the Don River”. This stone marks the symbolic source of the Don River. In fact, the source on the territory of this architectural complex is of artificial origin and is fed from the city drainage network.

This stream flows along a small artificial bed lined with stone. Next to the boulder, you can literally step over the bed of the symbolic source. The stream flows towards the park named after. D. G. Oniki and hides under the Children's Railway station. The further away from the boulder, the more the stream bed begins to widen.

Another interesting architectural object is the sculpture “Shat and Don”. Before the construction of the Istok Dona complex, this monument was located in the depths of the Children's Park and few people paid attention to it. During the improvement of the area near Komsomolskaya Street, this sculpture was restored and moved to the center of the architectural complex “Istok Dona”.

The sculptor Smirnov and the architect Syromyatnikov worked on the creation of the monument “Shat and Don”. The formation of the sculpture was based on the legend of two brothers - Shat and Don. The statue is a sculpture of two boys on horses; in the hands of one is a disk symbolizing the sun.

Near this architectural and park area there is a Children's Railway and a Children's Park with a huge number of different statues, attractions and playgrounds.

The main city attraction is the Novomoskovsk Children's Railway. Its construction began in 1953 thanks to the initiative of the director of the Moscow Coal plant D.G. Onik. The original project envisaged a ring, the length of which was about two kilometers. Two through stations were also built on the territory of the Children's Park: Berezki and Dubki. The first train was launched in December 1953. And in the spring of the following year, the construction of a brick locomotive depot at Berezki station was completed. In 1972, Dubki station began to be called Pionerskaya. Two years later, the construction of a training and production building at Dubki station was completed. In 1979, a landing platform was built, which was named Yunnatskaya. It allows the passage of both regular passenger and fast trains that do not stop there. In 2010, the tracks were repaired, reinforced concrete sleepers were laid, and the road layout was changed. Two more stations are currently being built, and plans are being made to build a new training complex. Thanks to the reconstruction, about a thousand people a year can be trained.

The foundation of Pushkinsky Square dates back to 1936. Its round flower bed in the central part and ray paths make it similar to the capital's Sokolniki Park, only in a more miniature size. In the fifties, the flowerbed was decorated with plaster bears and cubs. The opening of the monument to Pushkin took place at the end of 1993.

The opening of the Memory Park, located in the Zalessky microdistrict, took place in 1985. The monument consists of a metal stele with the numbers 1941-1945, an eternal flame, and a three-meter statue of a woman, which is a symbol of grief. Not far from the Moscow Region Coal Research Institute, there is a sculpture of a miner that glorifies the hard work of people in this profession.

In those places where the mass graves were located, a Memory Park was created. In it you can visit the Mother Sculpture and the Eternal Glory monument, which depicts a wounded warrior and his two comrades. There is also an eternal flame here. We shouldn’t forget about the monument to the soldier going into eternity. All those missing and those who died heroically in the war are immortalized here.

It owes its appearance to the construction of the chemical giant NPO Azot (now NJSC Azot), as well as the development of the Moscow region coal basin. A little later, Stalinogorsk became the center of the Mosbass territorial region as part of the Moscow region.

From December 27, 1933, the city was called Stalinogorsk (in honor of the Secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks, I.V. Stalin).

In 1930-1935, the number of settlements in Stalinogorsk and its environs increased tenfold - people came from all over the country for promising and worthy work in the construction of the young city.

In 1935, a palace of culture for chemists was opened and a medical school began operating (now Novomoskovsk Medical School). In 1938, the Stalinogorsk Drama Theater was opened and construction of the city stadium began.

The city suffered greatly during the Great Patriotic War, although it was occupied for only 17 days (from November 25 to December 12, 1941). During the period of temporary occupation, the underground organization “Death to Fascism!” was created in Stalinogorsk, and small partisan groups operated in the city and region. The main role in the liberation of Stalinogorsk was played by the 1st Guards Cavalry Corps (Lieutenant General P. A. Belov). Together with the corps, the 112th tank and 31st aviation divisions, the 9th tank brigade, the 15th guards rocket mortar regiment, the 1313th rifle regiment of the 173rd militia division and other units took part in the offensive. In total, 7,668 Stalinogorsk residents died during the Great Patriotic War.

In 1957, the entire Mosbass, including its center, became part of the Tula region.

In 1958, the city became the center of the Stalinogorsk district, formed from the territory subordinate to the Stalinogorsk city council and the abolished Gremyachevsky district.

In 1961, the city received its modern name Novomoskovsk. Development in the second half of the 20th century is associated primarily with the opening of new industries (primarily chemical ones) and the construction of new microdistricts: Zalesny, Urvansky, Zapadny. In fact, the city received its modern name precisely because of the enormous volumes of construction, comparable at that time only to those in Moscow.

In 1971, the city was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.

On January 22, 1977, mass riots occurred in the city - a crowd of 500 people gathered near the bullpen. It became known that police officers use assault and other harsh actions against detained minors. Outraged residents almost destroyed the bullpen. Six of them were prosecuted.

In 2007, Novomoskovsk won the Golden Ruble competition as the most economically developed among large cities.

On June 29, 2008, a referendum was held in Novomoskovsk and the region to change the status to a city district. More than 60% of the residents of the city and surrounding settlements took part in the voting, more than 90% voted for the unification of the district within the city. By the decision of the Tula Regional Duma of July 8, 2008, the urban settlement of the city of Novomoskovsk was separated from the Novomoskovsk municipal district and transformed into the municipality of the city of Novomoskovsk (urban district). After the elections on October 12, 2008, the remaining 3 rural settlements of the abolished Novomoskovsky district were annexed to the newly formed urban district: Gremyachevskoye, Riga-Vasilievskoye and Spasskoye. The city of Sokolniki was annexed to the city of Novomoskovsk as a microdistrict by decision of the Tula Regional Duma of October 24, 2008.

On April 2, 2009, a scandal erupted in the city related to the arrest of the head of the city N.N. Minakov and the head of the city administration I.M. Potapov. Both are suspected of committing a crime under Article 286, part 2 (abuse of official authority). The chief physician of the Novomoskovsk maternity hospital, E. A. Kozina, was elected as the new head of the city. The duties of the head of the city administration are performed by V. A. Zherzdev.

In 2009, the rural settlements of Mirny, Shakhty No. 35 and Shakhty No. 38 were formed from part of the city of Novomoskovsk and transferred to the subordination of the Novomoskovsky district.

On June 27, 2013, the Tula Regional Duma granted the petition to award Novomoskovsk the honorary title “City of Labor Glory.” In the fall of 2013, Anatoly Evgenievich Prorokov was elected head of the city.

Day of the city

City Day is celebrated on the last Saturday of May, the day before Chemist Day. Traditionally, the celebration includes sporting events, a festive parade of city groups and an evening concert at the Khimik stadium, ending with fireworks.

The city has temples of various religious denominations. In 1992, the first Orthodox church in Novomoskovsk was consecrated, dedicated to the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Two years later, in 1994, on the day of the Battle of Kulikovo, the Holy Dormition Church was opened. In 1995, by decree of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Holy Dormition Monastery was founded. In the same year, a monastery was opened in the village of Klin, where hermit monks found shelter. In 1997, in the building of the former “Vstrechny” cinema, another church was opened in honor of the “Unexpected Joy” icon of the Mother of God.

In 2009, the Cossack society of the city of Novomoskovsk decided to build an Orthodox church on the territory of the Children's Park next to the architectural complex “Istok Dona”.

Also in the village of Spassky there is the Holy Spassky Church, opened in 1813 and which is an architectural monument. There is a Sunday school at the church.

Temples of other Christian denominations include the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Evangelical Christian Church and the Pentecostal Church of the Evangelical Christians.

Presbyterians and charismatics are also represented in the city.

Attractions

In the central part of the city there is a park area called "Children's Park", which includes a cascade of artificial swimming pools. On its territory there is the Novomoskovsk children's railway - one of two on the Moscow railway, as well as the architectural complex "Istok Dona".

Toy railway

The children's railway runs in a closed ring around the children's park, founded in the early years of the city's foundation, and is one of the main city attractions. As of 2009, it is the best children's railway in Russia in terms of performance indicators. The initiator of the construction of the children's railway was the director of the Moscow Coal plant D. G. Onika in 1953. The children's railway is equipped with automatic track blocking, telephone and radio communications. It has 5 passenger cars of the PV-51 model, brought in 2005 (in connection with the reconstruction of the road dedicated to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the children's railway), after a major overhaul from the Small Moscow Railway. It has two locomotives of the TU2 model. After the joint work of the administration of the Novomoskovsk Children's Railway and the city's youth policy committee, the last carriage became a “wedding” carriage, in which the newlyweds take their first honeymoon.

Source of the Don

The source of the Don is located in the northern part of the Central Russian Upland, at an altitude of about 180 m above sea level within the city of Novomoskovsk. It is officially accepted that the source of the Don is a stream in the children's park, where the architectural complex “Source of the Don” is installed, which symbolizes the confluence of the Don and Shat rivers.
