"We're going around Russia." Rybinsk

The Tsargrad TV channel continues the project popularizing domestic tourism - “We’re traveling around Russia.” Together with columnist Andrei Malosolov, we go to a city that will surprise many - Rybinsk

When you approach Rybinsk from the Volga, you begin to rub your eyes in surprise - is this really a provincial Russian city, and not a copy of some port city in Europe? Rybinsk immediately impresses with its colorful embankment with large stone houses of the Bread Exchange, a grandiose temple and streets in the style of the Russian Empire. Both banks of the river are connected by an elegant 600-meter arched bridge. Rybinsk is the birthplace of barge haulers, the “founders of Hollywood” and Russian aircraft engines; The third largest man-made lake in Europe was created here.

Located 82 km from Yaroslavl, it has become a wonderful tourist city, where travelers will find everything they need to stroll along the imperial streets, embankment and museums, as well as relax in modern hotels and cafes. Rybinsk itself is a neat city, built according to a single royal architectural plan. A significant part of it has been restored, and when I arrived there was a large-scale reconstruction of the historical center - they were laying tiles and painting houses from the 17th-19th centuries. Very soon Rybinsk, already charming, will become a shining beauty!

How to get there?

The distance to Rybinsk from Moscow is 319 km. The journey by car or bus is approximately 4.5–5 hours along Yaroslavskoye Highway. After Sergiev Posad, turn left and go straight to your destination. On the way you pass ancient cities - Uglich, Kalyazin, Myshkin, but we will still have time to talk about them. The federal highway is in good condition and passes through picturesque places.

Russian Railways trains go to the city, traveling to the east and north of the country. Travel time is about 6 hours. The luxurious, restored station, built in 1905, welcomes guests. There are buses from it to the city center, and if someone wants to go faster, then a city taxi for 150-200 rubles will take you to the hotel you need.

A city that has changed six names

The location of the city could not but make it a significant trading place. Rybinsk is located at the largest junction of river routes: the Big Volga, kilometers wide, went down, up towards Vologda - the Little Volga with shoals (that’s why Rybinsk for centuries needed an army of barge haulers dragging ships through them), as well as the Sheksna and Mologa rivers, which in the 19th century served as waterways to St. Petersburg.

The settlement of Ust-Sheksna has been known since 1071 - the first name of the city. In 1502 it was mentioned as the Rybnaya Sloboda, which supplied the Moscow courtyard with Volga fish. In 1777, Catherine granted the settlement the status of a city and the name Rybinsk. In Soviet times, the city was renamed Shcherbakov, then Andropov, and in the 90s its historical name was returned to it.

The city flourished in the 18th-19th centuries, thanks to the construction of the Grain Exchange. Bread was brought here from all over the north of the country and all surrounding areas, and was sent across the country and to Europe along the river. For two centuries in a row, this city determined world prices for bread. Thanks to this fact, we now see wonderful, diverse houses of past centuries, which, alas, were badly neglected in Soviet times and turned into communal apartments.

The wealth of the city was brought not only by the bread trade, but also by the industrialization of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Here they built the largest rope factory in Europe and Russian Renault, which began producing automobile engines, and under Soviet rule, aircraft engines.

What to see in Rybinsk

There are many beautiful places in Rybinsk. On the embankment stands the Transfiguration Cathedral with a 93-meter bell tower, one of the ten tallest in Russia. The first temple on this site was built in 1654, the bell tower was erected in 1797. Now it is a stunning temple complex that can be seen from afar. Next to the cathedral are the Old and New Corn Exchanges - monumental buildings in the English style. The old one was built at the beginning of the 19th century, the new building was erected in 1909. Currently, the largest historical museum of Rybinsk is located here.

Behind the exchange are the 19th century shopping arcades, completely restored. Without compromising the architecture, shops, bars and restaurants are located here. In Soviet times, a monument to Lenin was erected on the shopping square, for some reason wearing earflaps and with his hand in his bosom. Surprisingly, the monument does not spoil the historical appearance of the square, and many tourists take group photos and selfies at this place. Probably because the monument to Alexander II originally stood on the pedestal. The Bolsheviks were not original in choosing places for monuments.

Photo: Nadia Brusnikova/shutterstock.com

The cathedral and the stock exchanges seem to open the entrance to the historical, merchant center of the city. The main historical streets of Rybinsk radiate directly from the temple, which for the most part have returned their historical names. An amazing building in the center is the Rybinsk Drama Theater (1825), standing on the main street and squeezed into ancient courtyards. At the corner of Preobrazhensky Lane there is the oldest stone house in Rybinsk, built in 1770, which belonged to the merchants Popov, and next to it is the elegant Sedov House (1901). Actually, if we try to describe at least a tenth of the ancient houses of Rybinsk, then there will not be enough space in the article - the city is beautiful with its entire ensemble of centuries-old buildings located on several central streets and along the embankment.

The Rybinsk embankment is well-groomed and clean. There is a pedestrian zone here, you can buy souvenirs and go to a cafe, and also see the monument to the barge hauler. Let us recall that Rybinsk was considered the capital of the barge haulers and in other years ships from Astrakhan to St. Petersburg and from Moscow to the east of the country dragged up to 600 thousand people a year.

Barge haulers worked in gangs and were divided into “indigenous” (professionals who knew the river) and “casual” who worked off their serfdom. It had its own hierarchy, its own customs. For example, barge haulers dragged ships and walked on the ground without a load in a special way - leaning forward strongly, putting their supporting leg forward, then pulling the second one towards it and harnessing their whole body to the towline,

– guide Alexandra tells me at the monument. They dragged ships through shallows and rapids with songs, the most famous of which is “Hey, let's go!” Alexandra refutes the myth that barge haulers were dark and ragged individuals. Many made good money, considering the flow of merchant ships that passed through Rybinsk until the invention of steam engines in the 19th century. However, until the beginning of the 20th century, barge haulers worked in the Yaroslavl region, and there was plenty of work.

Monument to barge hauler. Photo by the author

The favorite gathering place for barge haulers was the St. Nicholas Chapel on the embankment, neat and bright. Nearby is a monument to Rybinsk resident Lev Oshanin. His songs were sung by the entire Soviet Union - “Roads”, “Sunny Circle”, “The Volga River Flows”, “And in our yard” and many others. Tourists and Rybinsk residents polish the shoes of the bronze Lev Ivanovich.

On Stoyalaya Street there is the tallest fire tower in Russia. It is a monument of federal significance, built in 1912, height – 48 meters. On the same street there are many historical buildings, a monument to Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, a native of these places.

One of the most beautiful monuments of wooden architecture in Rybinsk is the House of Artists, located near the station, a 10-minute walk from the center. This is a wooden two-story brown-green residential building with carved platbands and turrets, which was restored with their own hands by several artists and cultural figures of the city. In fact, the house belonged to the Gordeev merchants, who built it in 1900. After the revolution, the house was expropriated, resettled, and in the 90s it fell into complete disrepair. The way it was restored says that if you have hands and a head, anything can be achieved, notes a resident of a neighboring Soviet house, whom I ask to photograph me against the backdrop of this beauty.

They came up with the idea themselves, pushed everything through the mayor's office, dismantled it down to the foundation, and then restored the dying landmark according to the drawings. Now they live here, and everyone comes to look,

– notes the Rybinsk resident. There is a Polish Catholic church diagonally from the House of Artists; it’s not often that you come across something like this in the Russian outback. Not far from the church, an old park with a lake is being restored. And around it there is a whole block of elite modern houses.

"Saturn" - the basis for the city's restoration

The former “Russian Renault”, the former “Rybinsk Motors”, and now NPO “Saturn” is the guardian angel of Rybinsk beauty and antiquity. The restoration of the city after the devastation of the 90s is being carried out through an association that produces engines for aircraft and defense products. The federal budget through the Ministry of Culture and Yaroslavl are making large investments in Rybinsk, but significant money comes from Saturn. Walking through the streets, you notice that the city is trying to become prettier.

Yes, in the side streets and outside the center you can fall into a hole and see shabby dorms. “But compared to what was here 7 years ago, now there is enormous progress,” notes Alexander Bykovsky, a great expert on Rybinsk. "Saturn" even visually looks decent - new workshops, a huge territory behind barbed wire, serious security, the plant itself works, they say, seven days a week and in three shifts.

The masterpiece, neglected Saturn Stadium

Few tourists pay attention to it, but with a keen eye I found a highlight in it. In Rybinsk there is a stunning and architecturally unusual Saturn stadium. Local football teams (one was even called FC Burlak) never rose above the second league. But the stadium is a real sports miracle. It was built in 1964 with 10 thousand seats. The unique location of the stands, there are two of them - they are, as it were, sunk into the bowl by one stand, where there are currently no benches, but at the same time, the main stand breaks out of the bowl like an arrow, giving fans a view of the Volga, flowing 100 meters from the arena. The VIP box is cleverly located, from which the commentary and announcer booths descend in a triple cascade towards the field.

The space behind the gate is neatly closed with earthen ramparts. There are four floodlight towers above the arena, but the Saturn's lighting has not been working for a long time. What the USSR knew how to build beautifully were parks and stadiums. And the Rybinsk arena has still not lost its former charm. Although both it and the adjacent park are in a terrible state. But there is also good news. In 2022, they plan to revive the stadium and invest several billion rubles in its reconstruction.

Rybinsk Jews who founded American cinema

Two local Jews, brothers Joseph and Nikolai Sheinker, brought world fame to Rybinsk. At the end of the 19th century, the brothers immigrated to the United States, changing their names to Joseph and Nicholas Schenck. At the beginning of the 20th century, Joseph-Joseph was among the founders of cinema, and Nicholas-Nicholas created Metro Goldwin Mayer. He actively built cinemas in the USA and generally popularized the industry around the world.

In Rybinsk, they proudly consider the Sheinker brothers to be the founders of Hollywood, and there is even a very nice museum in their honor. But we must admit that they have nothing to do with the founding of Hollywood, although they played a huge role in its formation.

Where to eat, where to sleep?

Oh, gentlemen and ladies! Rybinsk is a very advanced city in terms of where a tired traveler can eat and stop to rest.

So, at the SoupBeri gastropub, the emphasis is on various soups and European cuisine. Plus craft and local beer, of very decent quality. The average bill per person is about 1 thousand rubles. A pleasant place with the simple name “Bartender” is located in a 19th century house. Russian and European cuisine, a place for groups. A mug of excellent Yaroslavl beer costs 100 rubles here, but there are also European varieties at almost Moscow prices. "Shafran" is a popular bar with European cuisine and a cozy atmosphere. For exotic lovers, there is the Express bar in the courtyards in the very center, not far from the stock exchanges. Everything is simple here, except for the closing time of the bar – 21:00 and not a minute later!

Steak Cafe and Luigi's Restaurant. I ran past and looked in out of curiosity. The first one focuses on meat and local weddings on weekends, while “Luigi” is an analogue of Italian cuisine. On Krestovaya Street in: good staff, cozy, Russian cuisine. The average check is one thousand rubles.

Bar "Yavka". Photo by the author

Recently, many different trendy craft beer bars have appeared in Rybinsk, but there is also a restaurant for vegans. It's also known as the Japanese restaurant Maneki. Young people gather in the area of the Rybinsk beer factory, this is also a center.

And respectable gentlemen and tourists, accustomed to a certain level, should definitely go to Burlak, where expensive beer, good wine, and the cuisine is mainly Russian and molecular: this is when jelly is made from a piece of meat, and something is made from mushroom soup not like mushroom soup. But very tasty, however! I had lunch here with salad, soup and coffee for 1050 rubles. The Burlak Hotel, in my picky opinion, is the best in the city, is located in the same building. Rooms cost from 2.5 to 5 thousand rubles and are quite consistent with the level of 3-4 stars. It has its own parking, accepts cards, and provides family rooms.

At the very end of the embankment, not far from the Saturn stadium, there is a hotel complex with the strange name “YurLa”. But it is here that there is a large selection of good modern rooms for 2-3 thousand rubles. People come here in a large group or as part of a tour. The hotel has a restaurant, fitness.

Two fashionable hotels - “Koprino Bay”, 4-star level, located in a colorful bay 15 km from the city and with a price tag of 7-8 thousand rubles, as well as the eco-estate “Nikolskaya”, apparently for the top management of Rybinsk and very dear guests, where room rates start from 15 thousand rubles. But don't be scared! There are plenty of budget and decent hotels in the city, and everyone will be accommodated. For example, a very good former Soviet hotel, now the Vikonda Hotel, with fitness, a swimming pool and shops. The average cost of a room is 2200 rubles.

What to bring from Rybinsk

Fish! There is a lot of fish that are caught in the Volga, Sheksna and all the surrounding rivers, as well as in the rich Rybinsk Reservoir. Fish is smoked, dried and dried here. Catfish, pike perch, pike, bream. One fish, depending on its weight, costs from 250 to 700 rubles at local fish markets.

Summing up the results of the trip to Rybinsk, we can safely recommend going here on vacation. For example, using part of the vacation, and for several days. The city is fully adapted to the flow of tourists. Rising in terms of renovation, it has many museums, clubs, bars, cafes and other entertainment. Rybinsk is an aesthetic city, although there are areas of industrial development. You can safely come here on New Year and Christmas, when fluffy white snow will envelop the surrounding forests, and the rivers and creeks will be covered with ice. Come, you won't regret it!
