Historical sketch
It was first mentioned in 1623 as the village of Morsha, which belonged to the Ryazan bishops. The etymology is unclear. Isolating the element -sha and classifying the name as Finno-Ugric is unconvincing. There is a possible connection with the Russian anthroponym Morsha (Kazan, 16th century); compare with oikonyms: Morsha (Samara region), Morshin (Lviv region), Morshikha (Kurgan region).
Mordovian population of Morsha in the 17th century. adopted Christianity and assimilated by Russian settlers.
In the second half of the 17th - 18th centuries. a large trading village in the place where Tsna became navigable. Every summer, up to 50 thousand horses were driven through Morshansk from the southern steppes; bread, honey, fish, and furs were exported from the basins of the Vorona, Khoper and Medveditsa rivers. In the 18th century linen, rope, cloth, paper, and distillery factories operated here. Up to 25 thousand arshins of Morshan sailing cloth were exported annually.
In 1764, the village of Morsha came under the jurisdiction of the palace department. Since 1779, the district town of Morshansk of the Tambov governorship (since 1796 - Tambov province).
In 1856, in the district town of Morshansk, Tambov province, there were 8 churches, 1041 houses, 239 shops.
Until the mid-1870s. Morshansk is the largest commercial and industrial center of the Tambov province. The construction of the Ryazansko-Kozlovskaya railway, which bypassed Morshansk, sharply reduced the trade importance of the city.
In the 1880-90s. Large cloth and tobacco factories appeared in Morshansk.

Sacco and Vanzetti Street - Magistralnaya
We are entering the operational space. In the center of the photo is a monument to the fallen policemen, across the road is the gray corner 2-story police building where my father was kept in the monkey barn after the fire at the cathedral, and between them is the street named after Sacco and Vazzetti.
The intersection of Sovetskaya Street (straight) and Sacco and Vanzetti Street
For those who don’t know, Nicolo Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti are two anarchists of Italian origin who were executed by electric chair in the United States on August 23, 1927 for the murder of a cashier and two shoe factory guards.
"Heroes" of yesterday. Sacco and Vanzetti.
There was a worldwide buzz around this. In the USSR they were appointed heroes and fighters for the cause of the working class. Got it, well done! The poor themselves took money from the rich. This is where our revolutionaries started.
Previously, this street was called Sadovaya and was the border between the city and the suburb - Dubinevka. A protective rampart with a moat ran along it, which later became a city garbage dump.
There is always busy traffic here - this is the federal highway Tambov - Ryazan.

Attractions
- Trinity Cathedral is the main architectural landmark of Morshansk. The cathedral building can be seen tens of kilometers from the city. The history of the temple begins in 1830, when a site for construction on the banks of the Tsna River was chosen and the project was approved.
- The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the only Old Believer church in the Tambov region. Construction of the church began in 1913 according to the design of the provincial engineer I. A. Vagakov (built in 1914). The construction was financed by the wife of the richest Morsha merchant A. A. Smesova, Maria Ivanovna. The first service took place on November 29, 1914. The church was used for its intended purpose for only 15 years (then it was closed). In the 60s of the 20th century, the church was turned into a grocery store. On December 12, 1990, a decision was made to transfer the building to the balance of the culture department of the executive committee of the Morshansky District Council of People's Deputies. In August 2014, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was transferred to the local community of the Russian Orthodox Old Believer Church.
- Morshansky Historical and Art Museum, on April 13, 1918, at a meeting of the district executive committee, a resolution was adopted on the creation of the Morshansky Museum. Its founder and first leader was the wonderful archaeologist and artist P. P. Ivanov. The museum houses the second largest and highest quality collection of ancient Russian wooden sculpture in Russia; it includes more than 70 works of the 17th-18th centuries.
- Central city library building (former bank)
- St. Nicholas Church - the first mention of the temple dates back to 1736. The last construction of the new St. Nicholas Church, according to available archival documents, can be dated back to 1848. In the 1930s, St. Nicholas Church became a place of prayer for monks, priests and their families from ruined monasteries and churches. There are three thrones: the main one in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the side altars in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the supreme apostles Peter and Paul.

- Center for Children and Youth Creativity (former house of merchant I.P. Popov)

4. Sovetskaya Street - Impassable
I continue moving along Sovetskaya. On the right is the first attraction: the 3-story Police building, to the right is the previously mentioned old 2-story police building. Comments, in my opinion, are unnecessary.
POLICE
Nothing has changed in 60 years. There is virtually no sidewalk. A continuous long puddle. There is nothing to do here without boots.
Sovetskaya Street
Choosing where it is drier, and in some places out of despair, going out onto the roadway, we walk forward in the direction of the Oktyabr cinema and the Central Collective Farm Market.
