Vyshny Volochyok
[9] (Russian: Výshny Volochyok, IPA: [ˈVɨʂnʲɪj vəlɐˈtɕɵk]) is a town in Tver Oblast, Russia. Population: 52,370 (2010 Census);[3]56,405 (2002 Census);[10]64,789 (1989 Census).[11]
Story
Transportation between Tsna and Tvertsa has existed since the Middle Ages, which is confirmed by archaeological finds discovered in the area. Vyshny Volochek as a settlement is mentioned in the chronicle of 1471.[2] In 1703-1722. Peter the Great built a canal to connect two rivers (Vyshny Volochyok waterway). In 1740, a road connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg was built. These two events gave rise to the rapid economic development of Vyshny Volochok, which later became a major center for textile production and glass production. The first fair was held in 1772, and in the first half of the 19th century the road was rebuilt from stone. Construction of the railroad followed in 1851.[2]
During the administrative reform carried out in 1708, Peter the Great Vyshny Volochyok entered the Ingria Governorate (since 1710 - St. Petersburg Governorate), and in 1727 the Novgorod Governorate broke away. On May 28, 1770, Vyshny Volochok was given city rights, and on April 2, 1772, Vyshny Volochok district of the Novgorod province with its center in Vyshny Volochok. In 1775, the Tver governorship was formed from lands that previously belonged to Moscow and the Novgorod province, and Vyshny Volochek was transferred to the Tver governorship, which in 1796 was transformed into the Tver province.[12]
On July 12, 1929, provinces and districts were abolished. Vyshnevolotsky district with the administrative center in the city of Vyshny Volochek was formed into the Tver district of the Moscow region. On July 23, 1930, the districts were abolished, and the districts were directly subordinated to the region. On January 29, 1935, the Kalinin region was created, and Vyshny Volochek was transferred to the Kalinin region.[13] In 1990, the Kalinin region was renamed the Tver region.

Transport
The railway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg passes through Vyshny Volochyok.
The M10 Highway, which connects Moscow and St. Petersburg, also passes through the city. The road leading to Maksatikha, Bezhetsk, and Rybinsk branches to the east. There are also local roads; bus traffic comes from Vyshny Volochyok.
Tvertsa and Msta are connected by the Vyshny Volochyok waterway, built in the 18th century to provide a waterway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg, in particular the Neva and Volga. There is currently no passenger navigation.
Weather in the city by month. Best time to travel
Located in a temperate climate zone, there is a large amount of precipitation every month.
In summer there are more than 10 sunny days and up to 7 rainy days:
Month | Average air temperature (day and night, °C) | Number of snow days | Number of rainy days | Number of sunny days |

The best time to travel will be from May to August. These months are the sunniest and warmest. You can enjoy Russian nature and the system of water canals only in the warm season. Unfortunately, due to the lack of restoration of buildings in the autumn-winter period, the city looks sad and lonely. But in warm weather, greenery and water surface decorate the streets and lift your spirits.
Culture and recreation
The Kazan Vyshny Volochek Monastery
contains twenty-four cultural heritage monuments of federal significance and an additional 44 objects classified as cultural and historical heritage of local significance. Monuments of federal significance are the canals, dams and embankments of the Vyshny Volochyok waterway, the former estate of Serdikov, associated with the visits of Peter the Great to Vyshny Volochyok, as well as a number of buildings in the city center, including shopping arcades.[14]
In Vyshny Volochyok there is a local history museum, opened in 1932 (formally the Tver State United Museum). There is also a theater.[2]
Vyshny Volochyok on the map of Russia: geography, nature and climate
The city is located in the northeast of the Valdai Upland , the area is famous for its abundance of reservoirs and is called Tverskoye Poozerye . In the north and west there are two large reservoirs: Mstinskoye and Vyshnevolotskoye the Tvertsa River flows , and to the east there is a network of lakes and small rivers. The total water surface area of the urban area is 200 km2, and the land area is 54 km.
The city is riddled with canals and river channels, has 30 bridges, and 32 km long embankments - a real Russian Venice.
The nature of Vyshny Volochok is captured in the canvases of Venetsianov, Nesterov, Levitan, Kuindzhi, Repin, who worked in its vicinity.
Tver is the leader of the list of the most densely populated
The largest settlement in the region is Tver, a city with a rich history located on the banks of the Volga. It was founded in 1135, a century later it became the center of the powerful Tver Principality and even competed with Moscow for supremacy in the northeastern territories of Ancient Rus'.
Tver has an advantageous geographical location: today, as in past eras, important trade routes intersect here. Now there is a railway line connecting the two capitals, as well as a highway connecting Moscow with the settlements of the Upper Volga basin.
If at the beginning of its development Tver was one of the largest urban formations in the region, by the 17th century it fell into decline due to the Polish-Lithuanian conquest: about one and a half thousand inhabitants lived here. Later the level increased, but the next blow was the invasion of German troops during the Second World War. From 2001 to 2007, the population sharply decreased by almost 40,000, but since 2010 the dynamics have become positive: every year the number of citizens increases by 2,000-3,000. The outflow of the local population to neighboring capitals continues, and the demographic growth in recent years is due to the migration of people from other regions and small settlements in the region.
Today, 420,065 people live on an area of 152.22 km², providing a fairly high population density of 2759.59 people/km². The indicator is two times lower than in Moscow and just as much higher than in Beijing, where it is 1292 people/km².
Since the city cannot be called large, there are no problems associated with overpopulation. Traffic jams mainly occur in the narrow streets of the historical center, especially during the high tourist season. Sometimes there are difficulties on the M10 highway: it is located on the outskirts and connects the region with St. Petersburg and Moscow. Industry is developed, accounting for 39% of the region's total. There are about 50 large enterprises operating in such industries as:
- metal processing;
- mechanical engineering;
- printing;
- energy sector;
- chemical and light industry.
This provides a number of environmental problems associated with air and soil pollution by harmful emissions. However, the situation cannot be called critical: Tver is not among the most polluted in the country.

Useful information for tourists
It’s better to go on vacation in the summer; in winter you can’t enjoy nature and water canals, and non-restored buildings will spoil the impression.
Tips for tourists:
- If the purpose of your visit is to study temple architecture, you can enjoy it both in winter and summer.
- Most local entertainment is available absolutely free, and tickets to the museum rarely exceed the 100 ruble limit.
- Vyshny Volochek, whose sights are distinguished by the absence of restoration work, pleases tourists with an artificial system of water canals. But water increases the level of humidity and reduces air temperature, especially in the autumn-spring period.
- You should pre-book a hotel and prepare an offline map on your phone, as the Internet may not work in remote areas.
Vyshny Volochek is distinguished by its originality. Let the small but proud city keep every attraction under its wing. It is necessary to visit it because of the unique system of water canals and architectural monuments.

Historical sketch
Goods lifted on small ships to the Nikolo-Stolbenskaya pier were unloaded and transported by tug to the river. Tsna, where Vyshny Volochyok was located.
In the 16th century a large craft village was called Nikolsky Pogost or Pogost on Vyshny Volochok.
From the 18th century sawmills, mills, and forges began to appear in Vyshny Volochyok and its environs, and shipbuilding developed. But the main occupation of the city’s population was servicing ships passing through the Vyshnevolotsk water system.
With the reduction of traffic along the Vyshnevolotsk water system and the formation of new shopping centers near the railway (Bologoye, Spirovo), the economic importance of the city fell sharply.
In 1856, in the district town of Vyshny Volochyok, Tver province, there were 5 churches, 1671 houses, 226 shops.
