100 km from Moscow, almost on the border with the Kaluga and Tula regions, is the ancient Russian city of Serpukhov. It is connected to the capital by the Simferopol and Warsaw highways and the railway. The first mention of the city dates back to the beginning of the 14th century and is contained in the manuscript of Prince Ivan Kalita. But the settlements date back to earlier years. The sights of Serpukhov attract numerous tourists from all over Russia, some want to move here for permanent residence.
The first building from which the city of the Moscow region was born was a wooden fortress. In the 14th century, unique architectural monuments were founded - the Vysotsky and Vvedensky Vladychny monasteries - they served as excellent protection during the raids of the Tatar horde. The Serpukhov Kremlin was built in 1656. The fortified settlement served as a good coastal defense for the state.
A large number of churches and temples have been preserved in Serpukhov. There are the Vladychny Convent and the Vysotsky Monastery. In the historical city of the Moscow region, the architecture of modernity and antiquity is intertwined. Moscow residents and migrants are attracted by the history of the city district, and moving to Serpukhov for permanent residence is often associated with this factor. Developed infrastructure is another plus.
Ecology in the city of Serpukhov
The climate is temperate continental, characteristic of the Moscow region. The warmest month is July, the average temperature is 18 degrees. There is a lot of snow in winter, the coldest month is January - the average temperature is 7.8 degrees. In summer, residents swim in rivers and lakes, and in winter they go sledding and skiing. The snow doesn't melt for very long.
Not everything is good with the environment in the city. When planning a move here for permanent residence, you should take this into account. There are many enterprises in Serpukhov whose main specialization is the chemical industry. This is good from the point of view of future employment. But the air is saturated with formaldehyde, due to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and building materials.
In the city this is not strongly felt; in the vicinity of the ancient city there is the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve - the only natural place in the Moscow region.
Transport accessibility and infrastructure
The distance to the Moscow Ring Road from Serpukhov is 73 km. In the eastern and central parts there are Borisovskoe and Moskovskoe highways. During rush hour there are traffic jams and motorists travel no more than 30 km/h. Other highways pass near the settlement: Kashirskoye and Kaluzhskoye highways, the Crimea highway.
Roads in Serpukhov are in good condition. The authorities monitor them and make timely repairs. Moving here for permanent residence is quite justified; in addition to the Moscow region, Serpukhov is adjacent to the Tula and Kaluga regions. Thanks to this, the infrastructure in the village is well developed. This is an intermediate station on the route of trains going to the south of the country.
Serpukhov is a major transport point in the Moscow region, where water, railway and road routes are concentrated. There are several ways to move for permanent residence or simply get here:
- along the railway road in the Kursk direction;
- highways and highways at the federal level;
- by water: the city has a port located on the Nara River.
All new buildings are located within walking distance from bus stops, which allows you to quickly move around Serpukhov in any direction. The nearest metro stations are Tsaritsyno, which can be reached by train, and the Yuzhnaya platform; residents get here by bus.
Taxis operate in the urban district of the Moscow region. You can use it to travel to different neighborhoods. Tariffs are lower than in Moscow.

Shrines prayed for centuries
Vysotsky Monastery
Prince Vladimir the Brave, with the blessing of Sergius of Radonezh, founded a monastery in Serpukhov.
This happened in 1374. After the outstanding victory on the Kulikovo Field, the glorious Prince Vladimir, returning to his native land, buried his comrades who died in the battle on the territory of the Vysotsk monastery, and over this mass grave he erected a Cathedral of white stone in honor of the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the 16th century, the religious and architectural ensemble on Vysokoye was replenished with the Sergievsky and St. Nicholas churches, a gallery around the Conception Cathedral and a chapel were built - an extension for additional services in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
In 1840, a bell tower of three tiers was built there.
In the middle, on the second tier, the Three Hierarchs Church opened in honor of Saints John Chrysostom, Gregory the Theologian and Basil the Great. Previously, there were as many as 14 bells in the bell tower. One of them - the largest - weighed 721 pounds, which is about 12,000 kg! Subsequently, all the bells disappeared; only 5 of them were found.
Another temple is located nearby - the temple in the name of All Saints. It was erected with charitable money from the then famous industrialist N.N. Konshina. The family tomb of the Konshin family was equipped on the lower floor, and divine services were held on the second floor.
Many shrines are kept in the monastery. Read more about the history of the monastery, its churches, and icons in this article.
Among all the shrines of the Vysotsky Monastery, the image of the Most Holy Theotokos “Inexhaustible Chalice” is especially revered.
Unfortunately, the Prototype was lost in time, but, painted again and consecrated in the temple, the icon shows people its healing power.
It especially helps people get rid of the craving for drinking, smoking, and drug addiction. Many grateful words from parishioners are recorded in a special book. And the fact that the icon is decorated with precious jewelry in gratitude for the healing speaks for itself.
Vladychny Convent
There is also a convent in Serpukhov - the Vvedensky Vladychny. The Mother of God herself pointed to the place chosen for the construction of a temple in Her honor - in the city of Serpukhov, among a pine forest. It was founded back in 1360.
In 1378, a magnificent icon “The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Holy of Holies” was painted especially for this holy monastery, the image of which was seen in a vision by the Monk Varlaam, the founder and first of the rectors of the church.
This icon, one of the main shrines of the monastery, was always in the Cathedral Church and was revered as healing and miraculous.
At the beginning of the 17th century, with the money of Boris Godunov, the monastery was completely rebuilt: the main Vvedensky Cathedral was expanded, and a temple was built in honor of the Holy Great Martyr George.
A church in honor of St. Theodotus of Ancyra appeared above the Holy Gates, and the monastery was completely surrounded by a stone wall with towers. According to legend, in front of the icon of St. George's candle lit up by itself, warning the monks of impending disaster.
Later, the Church of St. Alexy, Metropolitan of Moscow and Senj was built - a beautiful tent-shaped canopy - over the monumental tomb of St. Varlaam.
Many holy relics are kept in the monastery churches. Read this article in great detail about everything.
Here, in the women’s monastery, there is also a copy of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon, famous for its miracles of healing.
Many believers come to Her to pray and ask the Most Pure Virgin for help in getting rid of the craving for drunkenness and other addictions that prevent a person from being happy. And help miraculously comes! This is evidenced by the numerous rich decorations that grateful healed people bring.
Temple of the Old Believers
The first building of the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary - an Orthodox church of the Old Believers - was built at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1912, a new church building was built with the money of the Serpukhov merchant of the 1st guild and the owner of the local factory, Anna Vasilievna Maraeva - a woman of amazing destiny.
When her daughter received a serious injury while riding a horse, from which she later died, Anna Vasilievna gave all the money that was intended for her daughter’s dowry to the construction of a new church.
The church was built. To this day, a beautiful old iconostasis and an icon of the holy martyr Anfisa, that was the name of the deceased girl, have been preserved there.
Over time, the number of parishioners decreased greatly, and the temple was given to the historical and art museum. Now there are excursions about the history of the temple and its collections. And services are held only 2 times a year. Read all the details about this ancient place of worship here.

What to see in Serpukhov in 1 day on your own
Serpukhov is one of the oldest cities in the Moscow region. The first mention of the city dates back to 1339. In those days, Serpukhov was the center of the volost, inherited by the third son of Ivan Kalita, Andrei Ivanovich. The first wooden Kremlin in Serpukhov was built at the end of the 14th century. But the construction of defensive structures did not save Serpukhov - at the beginning of the 15th century the city was sacked twice. By the beginning of the 16th century, Serpukhov became one of the most important sections of the line of defensive structures on the approaches to Moscow. In 1521, the city was ravaged by the Crimean Khan Mehmed I Giray - after which a decision was made to build a white stone Kremlin. Since 1572, the Great Regiment of the Russian Army has been stationed in Serpukhov. Due to its border location, Serpukhov repeatedly played an important strategic role throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 18th century, Serpukhov became one of the largest cities in the Moscow region. Linen, cloth and silk manufactories operated in the city. In the 19th century, the main occupation of the townspeople was trade.

Serpukhov Kremlin
You should start your excursion route around Serpukhov from the Kremlin. Serpukhov Kremlin , located on the left bank of the Nara River, was founded in 1556 on the site of a wooden fortress (erected in 1374). It is noteworthy that the builders of the stone Kremlin completely repeated the configuration of the wooden fortress. The length of the walls of the Serpukhov Kremlin in the form of an irregular triangle was 933 meters, the height was from 6.5 to 8.5 meters. The walls were topped with 8 towers - but not a single one has survived to this day. It is interesting that the Kremlin was immediately built from white stone, and was not whitewashed after construction. Along with the stone Kremlin, a wooden fort more than a kilometer long was built for defense. The last defensive structure of Serpukhov, the Novopriimochny fort, was built in the 17th century.

By the end of the 17th century, the fortresses that had defended against the Crimean Tatars for so many years had lost their strategic purpose. Like the Kremlins in many other cities near Moscow, Serpukhovsky is falling into disrepair. By decree of Paul I, the Moscow Kremlins should have been dismantled, but the Serpukhov Kremlin was recognized as an ancient monument. In the middle of the 19th century, it was restored and strengthened in places. In 1934, the Serpukhov Kremlin was dismantled for the construction of the Moscow metro - stone from the Kremlin walls was the most accessible material. Moreover, the stone was subsequently rejected and sent as building material to other cities in Russia.
Of all the buildings of the Serpukhov Kremlin, only the Trinity Cathedral has survived. You can also examine the preserved section of the wall. During the excavations, the remains of the Vysotskaya Tower of 1556 and sections of a medieval street were found.

Trinity Cathedral
The architectural dominant of the city is the Trinity Cathedral , standing on Cathedral Hill . The first wooden church on the site of the current cathedral appeared in the 14th century. The stone temple was built in the 16th century, but has not been preserved in its original form to this day. The temple underwent large-scale reconstruction in the classicist style in the first half of the 19th century: the octagon of the temple and the bell tower were changed, the facade was decorated in the Empire style, a new chapel was added (in the name of St. Nicholas of Myra), the chapel of the holy martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica was restored. During Soviet times, the cathedral was closed; at the end of the USSR era, a branch of the local history museum was opened inside the temple. Currently, services at Trinity Cathedral are held only on Saturdays. On other days the temple is closed for restoration.

Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker the White
From the Trinity Cathedral, move along Nizhnyaya Serpeika Street and further along Sovetskaya until the intersection with Kaluzhskaya. Here is located one of the most beautiful churches in the city - the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (also called St. Nicholas Cathedral, St. Nicholas Cathedral, St. Nicholas Cathedral). The stone Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Bely was erected on the site of a wooden church in 1649 by Yaroslavl craftsmen. But at the beginning of the 18th century, the city mayor issued a decree on the construction of a new limestone temple. The temple was built by 1721. But, 100 years later, it underwent another restructuring. During the Soviet years, there was a pasta factory inside the cathedral. Built in the Moscow Empire style, the cathedral from 1833 is a modern look at the cathedral. White stone was used in the decorative elements, and the walls were covered with white plaster. Pay attention to the multi-tiered bell tower adjacent to the temple from the west - its bell is the largest city bell. The weight of the bell of St. Nicholas the Bely Cathedral is 5 tons. The tongue alone weighs 150 kg.
It is worth going inside the cathedral: the paintings and decoration amaze with their beauty and grace. Inside the cathedral there is the famous icon of the Mother of God “Helping Childbirth,” which is credited with miraculous properties.

Lenin Square
From St. Nicholas the Bely Cathedral, move towards the city center - Lenin Square . On the way, pay attention to the Church of the Crucifixion , which was once part of the Crucifixion Monastery. Now the church is in a dilapidated state and needs restoration. Near Lenin Square there are shopping arcades of Gostiny Dvor . The building is quite small, but is remarkable for the architecture of pre-revolutionary Russia. Previously, the square itself was called Torgovaya. There are 4 squares in the corners of the square. Also notable from the architecture around the square is the brick house with a clock - locals call it “Big Ben”. There is also a monument to Prince Svyatoslav .

Vysotsky Conception Monastery
The next attraction of Serpukhov, which is a must see in 1 day, is located 1.5 km from Lenin Square. The route can be chosen based on the availability of free time. If you are very limited in time, go straight along 2nd Moskovskaya Street. If you have at least 30 minutes to spare, take a walk along the surrounding streets and look at the architecture of Serpukhov from past centuries: wooden one-story houses, estates of “linen” merchants.
The Vysotsky Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries not only in the Moscow region, but also in Russia. It was founded in 1374 by Sergius of Radonezh and Prince Vladimir the Brave. The monastery in those days was part of the defensive system of the princely residence on the Oka. The Vysotsky rank comes from the monastery - a special style of depiction on icons, which influenced the works of Andrei Rublev. Soldiers who died during the Battle of Kulikovo are buried in the basement of the Conception Cathedral. The monastery was visited several times by Ivan IV - special chambers were built for royal visits. The monastery was repeatedly robbed and destroyed by the Tatar and Crimean khans, as well as the Poles.

The main shrine of the monastery is the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon - it is believed that it relieves alcoholism, drug and tobacco addiction. The Church of the Intercession contains ancient images of the 15th–17th centuries, as well as more than 200 pieces of relics of saints. The architectural ensemble of the holy monastery consists of temples: the Conception Cathedral of the time of Boris Godunov, the Intercession of the late 17th century, the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh of the late 17th century, the bell tower with the gateway Church of the Three Saints of the first half of the 19th century, the Church of All Saints in the pseudo-Russian style of the late 19th century, the Church of the Icon of God Mother "Inexhaustible Chalice" , Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hear" . The area is very pleasant and well-groomed. In addition to exploring the architectural sights, here you can have a snack at the monastery pizza and go up to the observation deck overlooking the Nara River.

Vvedensky Vladychny Convent
The last point on the route along Serpukhov is located on the other bank of the Nara River, 4 km from the Vysotsky Monastery. The most convenient way to get there is by car. The Vvedensky Vladychny Convent was founded in 1360 by Metropolitan of Moscow Saint Alexy. Just like the Vysotsky Monastery, the Vvedenskaya Vladychnaya Monastery is considered one of the oldest on Russian soil. It was here that the miraculous icon of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice” was revealed, which is now located in the Vysotsky Monastery. The monastery was transformed into a holy women's monastery only in 1806. During the Soviet years, a military flight school was located on the territory of the monastery. During that period, the monastery buildings were destroyed. The Cathedral of the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the reign of Boris Godunov and several churches from the late 16th–17th centuries have been preserved Currently, restoration work is being carried out on the territory, but at the same time, the monastery is active. At the monastery there is a holy spring “Inexhaustible Chalice” - it is believed that the water from it also helps fight alcohol and drug addictions. You can buy delicious pastries at the monastery bakery.

Urban environment
Serpukhov cannot be called completely comfortable. The urban district of the Moscow region supports historical monuments, but not the settlement itself. Roads, like in other cities, require repairs. In summer, rivers often flow through the streets. Because of this, the authorities began to purchase watering and harvesting equipment and took up the issue of building an asphalt plant. Utility fees are the lowest among towns in the Moscow region.
And different companies are involved in the repair and maintenance of the housing stock. The fee depends on the area and management organization. For multi-storey buildings with an elevator – 29-36 per sq.m.
