Serpukhov
(Russian: Serpukhov, IPA: [ˈSʲɛrpʊxəf]) is a city in Moscow Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Oka and Nara Rivers, 99 kilometers (62 mi) south of Moscow along the Moscow-Simferopol Highway. The Moscow-Tula railway passes through Serpukhov. Population: 127,041 (2010 Census);[4]131,097 (2002 Census);[9]143,618 (1989 Census).[10]
Story
Serpukhov was founded in 1339 to defend the southern approaches to Moscow.[11] Two years later it became the seat of a powerful principality, ruled by Dmitry Donskoy's cousin and close ally, Vladimir the Bold. It was given city status in 1374. [ citation needed
] The principality continued until 1456, when the last prince fled to Lithuania. The city often became a victim of hordes of Tokhtamysh, Crimean Tatars, and other steppe conquerors. It was necessary to protect it with a stone citadel, or kremlin, which was completed by 1556 as part of the Great Abatis Belt.
Attractions
The citadel rises above the steep hill on which R. Serpeika enters Nara. However, in the 19th century, part of the citadel was demolished by the city's inhabitants, who used its limestone for their mansions. Even now, the vast majority of basements in nearby houses are built from this material. The main monument in the Kremlin is the Trinity Cathedral, built in 1696 in the Moscow Baroque style.
The Vysotsky Monastery has a cathedral and a refectory dating from the late 16th century, as well as a supposedly miraculous icon of the Inexhaustible Chalice. Another important monastery, called Vladychny, with the Vvedensky Cathedral and the hipped St. George Church, was erected during the reign of Boris Godun. The last monastery was named in honor of the honorary title of Russian bishops, as it was founded by the holy metropolitan. Alexis in 1360
Legends and facts from the past and present of Serpukhov
According to one “gray-haired” legend, there is a whole system of branched underground galleries located near Serpukhov?
Hidden from view, tunnels connected the Serpukhov Kremlin on Cathedral Hill, the Vysotsky and Vladychny monasteries. Each monastery had a passage leading to Nara. Access to the waterway was necessary in case of an enemy raid: it was possible to get to the river unnoticed and swim to the other side.
According to rumors, the library of Ivan the Terrible and countless treasures from the times of the October Revolution are allegedly hidden underground. The ghosts of monks guarding the jewels still roam in the darkness of the gloomy labyrinths. Modern treasure hunters should not disturb the ghosts of faithful treasure guards, so as not to remain underground forever...
Has Kaluzhskaya Street in Serpukhov ever changed its name?
For example, Fabrichnaya is now Chekhov’s, Kazyonnaya is now Proletarskaya, Borovskaya is Volodarsky’s, Spasskaya is Uritsky’s. Kaluzhskaya has preserved its historical appearance almost in its original form.
According to the Plan for the Reconstruction of District Cities of the Moscow Province during the time of Catherine II, the blocks on Kaluzhskaya were intended for representatives of the noble class. According to urban legend, Catherine II stayed in the mansion of the Kishkin factory owners, where the pre-trial detention center is located, in 1775 during a trip to the south. After visiting the Empress Mother, the owners, the Kishkin brothers, no longer lived in this house and handed the castle over to the city.
And they also say that the Empress’s carriage, driving along Moskovskaya Street, was unable to cross the ravine. Her Majesty did not like this very much, and she ordered a bridge to be built here. It was popularly called "Earth". By the way, according to one version, the brick factories of the merchant Vasily Ivanovich Plotnikov were located in the ravines. By the way, the old buildings of the Serpukhov printing house were built from “native” local bricks.
In the Raisemenovskoye estate in the 19th century there was a hydropathic clinic for 17 years - a real Russian Baden-Baden?
Ferrous springs were discovered on the estate that belonged to the marshal of Paul I, Alexander Petrovich Nashchokin. The enterprising gentleman decided to use their healing properties: in 1803, Emperor Alexander I, with a special rescript, allowed Nashchokin to open a mineral water resort on the estate. Remember from Pushkin: “Everyone sends Onegin to the doctors, who in unison send him to the waters.” (Shouldn’t it be in our district?) However, the resort existed until 1820, and then the owner of Rai-Semyonovsky went bankrupt. None of the buildings, alas, have survived to this day - neither the resort village itself with three streets, nor the building with baths, nor the hotel. And now 200 years have passed, and people still go to Raisemenovskoye for the cleanest water. There is also a bathhouse where you can take a dip and pray.
In August, a new art object “boiled” in the vicinity of Serpukhov?
Yes, yes, this is a two-meter samovar, installed on the picturesque bank of the Kamenka River in a place called Dedova Gora, near the village of Kamenka. Local craftsmen made a two-meter vessel from an old gas pipe found nearby. According to legend, a poor young man once lived in these parts. He fell in love with one girl with all his heart. The young couple decided to get married, but the young lady’s hard-hearted father prevented their happiness: he married his daughter to a merchant from another village. But the young man did not love anyone anymore, and so he grew old alone, continuing to come to the hill by the river and be sad about the past. This is where Grandfather Mountain comes from.
Serpukhov's coat of arms was recognized as one of the most unusual?
The voting was held on the country's largest radio station, Europe Plus. Based on the results of choosing the most unusual coat of arms, third place was taken by a golden peacock on a scarlet shield - the symbol of Serpukhov. In the second position is the coat of arms of the city of Shuya in the Ivanovo region. Here a bar of soap is depicted on a red background: Shuya was famous for industrial soap making. The leader and winner of the first place was the coat of arms of the Siberian city of Irkutsk, on which the black beast babr (Old Russian designation for a panther or leopard) holds a red sable in its mouth.
