What to visit in Surgut in one day

Tourists often ask when spending a weekend in Surgut what to see in one day? This question cannot be answered unambiguously. In any city, it is better to focus on your own interests and desires, because the beaten tourist route is not always the right one. Maybe first you should take a taxi and just ride around the northern city, stopping only where your heart tells you.

Climate of the Far North

Experts equate the climatic conditions of Surgut with the climate of the Far North. The indigenous people claim that life in these places is very harsh in terms of weather, but at the same time extremely interesting. Spring and autumn are characterized by the highest amounts of precipitation. Dry summers and sandy soil bring a lot of negative feelings. During the dry summer there are periodic showers.

Winter is quite cold and long, and the frosty period lasts from early October to late April. The temperature ranges from - 20° to - 54°. In November (sometimes earlier) snow falls, after which snow cover persists until May. In mid-autumn, almost all rivers are covered with an ice shell.

Summer cannot be called warm, since the average temperature of this season is no more than + 18°. Cases have been recorded of snow falling in June.

The time of autumn differs from the traditional period and lasts only one month - September.

The climate of Surgut largely depends on certain circumstances:

  • The Ural ridge, located in the west of the territory, serves as a reliable shield for Surgut, trapping moist warm air from the Atlantic;
  • the open northern side, in turn, allows a huge number of cold polar accumulations to freely penetrate the area; a similar situation from the south contributes to the free movement of heated air (both continental temperate and tropical masses); the resulting air exchange leads to sharp temperature fluctuations;
  • The main characteristic of this area is plains and lowlands with many water resources, such as rivers with wide valleys, lakes, reservoirs and swamps, which play an important role in shaping the climate.

White nights, high humidity levels, lack of vitamins, sunlight and oxygen can also be considered a climatic feature.

Sights of Surgut.

Yugorsky Bridge. One of the longest bridges in Siberia, opened in 2000, was included in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest suspended span. Its construction took five years, and in 2009 the Bridge Museum began its work. Most of the exhibits are dedicated to the builders; here you can also look at the key with which the governor of Surgut opened the Yugorsky Bridge, and drawings of the original versions.

Saimaa Park is popular with local residents both in winter and in summer: on this beautiful natural piece of land, Surgut residents love to ski, rollerblade and bike, sunbathe and have picnics. But the favorite entertainment for children and adults is feeding squirrels, of which there are a lot here. In addition, rodents are already accustomed to people and are happy to help themselves directly from their hands.

Surgut Big Ben, in the building of which the school of foreign languages is located. Of course, this is not an exact copy of the London original, but nevertheless deserves special attention. The watch was made to order in the UK, in appearance it looks exactly like the original one, only 3 times smaller. The stained glass windows feature angels and knights surrounded by coats of arms and Gothic arches. And on the ground floor there is one of the most popular city cafes, English, which conveys the atmosphere of modern Britain.

Historical and cultural is a complex that includes 14 wooden buildings from the early 20th century. Here you can explore from the inside the Temple of All Saints, the House of local historians, nature, journalists, Cossacks, indigenous peoples of the North, the center of crafts and the school-museum named after A.S. Znamensky. “Old Surgut” regularly holds a variety of thematic exhibitions, events, city festivals and fairs.

The Surgut Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest museums in the city. You can explore here more than 70 thousand exhibits, most of which are related to the ethnography of indigenous peoples. In addition to permanent exhibitions, you can visit various historical, military and social events that the administration holds regularly. The museum is quite modern: many exhibitions are held using expensive, state-of-the-art equipment.

There are countless monuments in Surgut. The largest and most significant is the bronze monument to the pioneers of Siberia and the founders of the city. The 15-meter sculpture is a must-see for all visitors to the city. Among the less important ones are the monument to the nurse, the aviator, the first train, the smile, the black fox, the builder, the first Komsomol members, A.S., Pushkin, Karl Marx, the courage of the fishermen of Surgut and many others.

There are also plenty of temples: a convent in honor of the icon of the Mother of God, a temple in honor of the Great Martyr George the Victorious, St. Luke, the Church of All Saints in the Siberian Land... The most famous cathedral in Siberia is the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord. It is already an Orthodox symbol of Surgut and the pride of the townspeople: a snow-white building with 13 domes covered with titanium nitrite sparkles in the sun and is considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the entire Khanty-Mansiysk region.

Surgut is one of the oldest cities in Siberia. It was founded not far from the Ostyak fortress of Borodoka. It is believed that the founders of Surgut were a governor, a merchant and a hunter. Since the 17th century, associates of Stepan Razin were sent here, and in the 19th century, the Decembrists. At first it was just a small fortress, but in 1591 the first Gostiny Dvor was built here, which became the center of the development of Siberia. Historians believe that serfdom did not affect Surgut. In 1918, Soviet power was established here. After 2 years, the city became the center of the anti-Bolshevik uprising, but the conflict was suppressed by the Red Army. In 1923, Surgut was deprived of its city status and became a village. But even before the war, industrial production began to develop here. During the war, the Odessa canning factory was evacuated here. Food, textiles and timber were sent to the front from Surgut. Now Surgut is second only to Moscow and St. Petersburg in terms of industry.

City population

On the site of the famous Russian city, the once small national peoples of Mansi and Khanty were engaged in fishing and collecting gifts from the taiga.

1957 can be called the beginning of its modern revival. With the start of large oil and gas developments, people from all regions of the former Soviet Union came to this region. In world history it is very difficult to name cities that have undergone rapid development in such a short period of time as Surgut.

Today it is a city of youth, the young generation (25-35 years old) with a working population of over four hundred thousand people. It is significant that the unemployment rate is currently 0.25% and is constantly declining.

Government programs aimed at increasing the welfare of the district have produced excellent results: a significant increase in the birth rate and a decrease in mortality have been noted. Surgut is considered not only a city of oil workers; ancient crafts still flourish here: harvesting berries and fruits, deer breeding, hunting and fishing. Many city residents work in the Yugansky nature reserve, as well as in one of the landmarks, Barsova Gora, which is a unique natural and archaeological monument.

Architectural landmarks

Ufa, whose sights can amaze every tourist, has a unique architectural appearance. One of the architectural attractions is the Congress Hall. The building was built in 2007 for the 450th anniversary of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It is truly unique - its architecture combines a modern glazed facade and Bashkir ornament.

The Congress Hall hosts the most significant events of a republican scale. The building is located at the address: Zaki Validi Street, building 2. The Ufa Arena Ice Palace is a multifunctional complex that hosts not only hockey matches, but also ice performances, performances, shows, as well as public skating.

It is the home arena for the Salavat Yulaev hockey team. The grand opening took place on August 27, 2007. The complex includes 2 sites: large (for 8070 people) and small (for 640 people). The arena has special areas for wheelchair users to attend events. Ufa-Arena is located at the address: Lenin Street, building 114.

Not far from the Congress Hall is the main building of the republican government - the House of the Republic. The Government, the Administration of the Head of Bashkortostan, the Constitutional Court and other government bodies are located here. The building has been in operation since 1979. It looks quite impressive. The walls are made of white brick. The House of the Republic has the shape of a rectangle, close to a square.

The building in the inner courtyard is connected to the outer one. Around is Alexander Matrosov's garden, fountains and sculptures. Address of the House of the Republic: Tukaev Street, building 46. Ufa, whose attractions are also associated with sports, has its own hippodrome “Akbuzat”.

Now this is one of the best Russian equestrian sports complexes. In addition to the arena, stables and veterinary post, the 4-level building houses a hotel for competition participants and a museum. Hippodrome address: Mendeleeva, 217A. In the historical center of the city, at Revolyutsionnaya, 41, one of the tallest buildings in Ufa is located - the office of Uralsib Bank.

It includes 21 floors and has a height of 100.5 m. There are practically no high-rise buildings in this area, so the skyscraper adorns the panorama of the city, dominating the landscape.

The facade of the building is made of dark glass, gray and brown building panels. Due to its unusual shape, the building received the popular names “mobile phone” and “candle”. During the New Year's Eve, a figure of Santa Claus is installed on the roof.

Monument to the Nurse

In front of the entrance to the trauma center there is the only monument to a nurse in Russia. The author is Surgut sculptor Nikola Yanchak.

The local doctors liked the figure of a fragile girl rushing to call a sick person. The doctors thanked the author for his attention to their profession and noted that this is how most city residents imagine a caring nurse.

Monuments

Monument to the founders of Surgut

Address: ring Lenin Avenue - st. Ostrovsky

The main monument of the city is the monument to its founders. The composition consists of 4 bronze figures:

  • prince - personifies Fyodor Boryatinsky, the founder of Surgut;
  • governor - the prototype of the character is Vladimir Anichkov, an associate and right hand of Fyodor Boryatinsky;
  • Cossack carpenter - an allegory of the will and free spirit of the townspeople;
  • a priest is a symbol of the soul and deep religiosity of Siberians.

The sculptural composition rises 15 meters above the ground, and the city’s central transport ring continues around it.

Monument to the Black Fox

Address: st. Energetikov, 2. At the entrance to the "Old Surgut" complex

On the border of the old and modern parts of Surgut there is a monument to the black fox. It was installed in 2006 and depicts the city's mascot, its celestial patron and heraldic animal.

According to legend, in ancient times the land of the Khanty and Mansi was in danger. A mysterious horseman descended from heaven, taking the guise of a red fox - Mir-susne-khum (among the Mansi) or Vert (among the Khanty). The bright orange, almost red, color of the fur symbolized heavenly fire and the sun. The horseman (or red fox) became the patron saint of the local peoples, protecting and guarding their hearth and families. One day the animal got caught in a fire, which caused its fur to turn dark brown.

The monument was created from bronze by Tobolsk master Minsalim Timergazeev, who cast the figure in St. Petersburg in a month.

Monument to a Smile

Address: st. 30 years of Victory, 21/2

The sculptural composition was installed near the museum center of Surgut in 2006. The author of the monument is the sculptor Oleg Dergachev, who several years earlier erected a similar monument in Lviv.

During the creation process, the fish visited several cities:

  • in Lvov - a model of the monument was created in plaster;
  • in Kyiv - the composition was cast in bronze;
  • in Moscow - was loaded onto a plane that took her to Surgut.

According to legend, in a local river there lived a smart and cheerful fish who was not afraid of wild animals and knew many jokes and funny stories. She shared jokes with the residents of the city, telling them through her friend the mermaid. Everyone who heard the stories of the laughing fish smiled and forgot about their troubles and problems.

According to the creator of the monument, in the 21st century, happy and cheerful people are becoming increasingly rare on the streets of Russian and Ukrainian cities, so the fairytale fish needs to appear again and cheer up the townspeople.

The opening of the sculptural group was timed to coincide with the international humor forum “Caricaturum”, which is organized in the city every year on April 1.

Nature of Surgut

The northern oil-producing capital is not only gas, oil and many other useful resources. First of all, it is a unique nature with huge water and marsh systems. Pollution of the city's environment is a serious environmental problem, which the city authorities are closely addressing.

Air and water pollution occurs due to high levels of oil industry waste released into vital arteries. To these facts we can add a significant volume of vehicle exhaust gases. It is reassuring that the modern automotive industry today controls the production of cars in accordance with stricter environmental standards.

The main enterprises of the region do not stand aside from improving the surrounding ecosystem. Experts are working on the development of new and protective methods in the process of oil production and its purification. The activities achieve positive results thanks to the enormous funds allocated by these factories.

Similar actions are observed in the field of gas production. Today, options are being developed for the use of associated gas released during production. These measures help protect Surgut from pollution.

Religious sites

Not far from Victory Park, at Komarova 5, is located one of the symbols of the Republic of Bashkortostan - the Lyalya-Tulpan mosque. The building resembles a blossoming flower, and the minarets are its buds. This flower was not chosen by chance, since it is the tulip that symbolizes Allah for Muslims. The mosque opened its doors on April 7, 1998.

The building consists of 3 floors, its height is more than 20 m, and the height of the minarets is 53 m. The area of the mosque is 2500 sq.m. “Lala-Tulpan” is not only a mosque, but also a madrasah, Sunday schools, classrooms, a dormitory and a conference hall.

It is an object of historical and cultural heritage. The consecration and opening of the temple took place on September 6, 1909. Its height is 21 m, including the bell tower - 47 m. The modern appearance is the result of several reconstructions. The building is sky blue and is crowned with golden domes.

The interior decoration of the temple is truly amazing - the walls and floor are decorated with the best Italian and Greek stones. Italian emerald-colored minerals were used for the mosaic, as well as granite from South Africa. The walls and ceiling are covered with paintings. The cathedral contains parts of the relics of many saints. Address: Kirova, 102.

The Ar-Rakhim mosque is being built in Ufa, which will become the tallest in Russia. The facility is located at the intersection of Salavat Yulaev Avenue and Kommunisticheskaya Street. Despite the fact that construction has not yet been completed, the mosque impresses every resident and guest of the city with its appearance and scale. The height of the four Al-Rahim minarets is 74 m.

The design uses classical Islamic motifs in combination with elements of Bashkir ornament. It uses only hand work. The mosque consists of 6 floors, 2 of them underground. Inside there will be prayer halls, a conference hall, a museum, a library and other premises. Capacity – 2000 people. A park and fountains will be equipped in the adjacent area.

There will be 2 observation platforms for tourists. A special feature of the mosque is that it will house a relic - a hair from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad. On Mingazheva 4 there is the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is the oldest surviving Ufa church. Despite its not the most convenient location, the temple is worth visiting for all believers.

An ancient icon of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is kept here. The church is protected by the state as a cultural heritage. Restraint in architecture and design does not prevent it from being a significant place among Orthodox Christians. Another cultural heritage site is the Bogorodsko-Ufa Church.

This is one of the largest churches in the Ufa diocese. It houses a relic - the Bogorodsko-Ufa Icon of the Mother of God. There is a Sunday school at the church for adults and children. At services you can listen to the church choir, created in 2008. Temple address: Ferina 15.

Soil Features

Surgut is located on flooded sand. As a result of melting snow and precipitation in the form of rain, ground movements are observed, as a result of which voids appear in the relief.

In the soil cover of the city and surrounding areas, scientists focused on the main types of soil:

  • the weak-turf type includes layered primitive, purely layered and typical soils;
  • the peaty type consists of layered, typical and podzolic soils;
  • swamp-peat variety.

Distinctive features are a rather weak structure (due to their sandy composition), low humus content, extremely simple structure and mosaic-like distribution of soils. It is influenced by factors such as river channels, frequent fires and zonal composition of soil formation.

Fluctuations in temperature make local soils poorly fertile, which affects the full cultivation of crops.
