Lost on the southeastern outskirts of the Tver region, stands the small provincial town of Kalyazin. To be absolutely precise, its location is 180 kilometers from Moscow, on the banks of the Volga, where the Zhabnya River flows into it. The city has a rich historical past, as it was founded in 1775 on the site of the ancient settlement of Nikola na Zhabne. Yaroslavskoe and Dimitrovskoe highways lead to it from Moscow, or you can get there in 3 hours by bus from Savyolovsky station. Despite the small population of 12,840 people and the small size of Kalyazin itself, it deservedly enjoys the attention of the huge number of tourists who visit it annually. And this is not just like that. Kalyazin is called the Russian Atlantis. There really is a lot to see and do. We present to your attention the most important sights of Kalyazin with photos and descriptions, addresses and names. Go!
Bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral
In the last century, there was a grandiose construction project associated with the creation of hydroelectric dams in the riverbed of the Volga, which would provide electricity to this large region. As a result, part of Kalyazin was flooded. The cathedral was also sunk, from which only the bell tower remained. A lighthouse was built from a high belfry. Subsequently, the base of the bell tower was strengthened with an artificial island.

Historic mansions
Although the historical part of the city of Kalyazin was flooded, fortunately, the former Moskovskaya Street, now Karl Marx Street, on which the ancient mansions of wealthy citizens are located, has been preserved. This family, which also made a great contribution to Kalyazin’s past, owned the Ryzhkov Trading House. Their house was built in the style of early classicism and baroque. The deep arch over the main entrance and the beautiful mezzanine, combined with carved platbands, make a lasting impression. Once the estate was located in the very center of one of the main streets of the city, but after the famous flooding it turned out to be right next to the water and closest to the flooded bell tower.
House of Merchants Lyakhovs

At the very beginning of the 20th century, it was bought from the Lyakhov merchants by the city treasury and given over to the city duma. Museum of Local Lore
The temple, built in the 18th century after the revolution, like most similar structures, ceased to serve people for its intended purpose. The fact that it was not demolished, but converted into a local history museum gives hope that one day the bells will ring over the church again. In the meantime, there is a museum here that has managed to collect thousands of exhibits telling about the history of the city over a hundred years.
Places for families with children
Those who like to relax with their families in Kalyazin also have something to offer to interest the little guests of the city.

It was created by local residents over several years. The area of the estate is small, but there is Leshego’s house, a well with Vodyanoy, a mill, a bathhouse, a workshop, and even a refectory with refreshments.
All buildings are made of wood and designed in a fairy-tale style. The area is fenced with a palisade, against which a boat with fishing gear is leaning. Wooden figurines of fairy-tale characters are placed throughout the yard.
To participate in the interactive program with the participation of Baba Yaga, you need to take care of tickets in advance. But even without them there is something to do here. So, you can take pictures and buy funny souvenirs. This is also a great opportunity to visit a fairy tale.
House of Crafts
- Address - st. Comintern, 81.
Kalyazin craftswomen took up lace-making in the 17th century, when Tsarina Maria Ilyinichna Miloslavskaya herself came to Kalyazin with her needlewomen to wait out the plague epidemic. This small town then became for a time the center of the Russian state.
Since then, lace making has become the main craft of the women of Kalyazin. Lace woven with bobbins instantly spread throughout Russia and Europe. But by the end of the 20th century. this craft was almost lost.
There are only two lacemakers left in the whole city. It was then that the House of Crafts was opened - to preserve the ancient craft. Master classes on bobbin lace making, wood carving, and making amulets dolls are held here. There is a small shop at the attraction that sells original products and souvenirs.
Yacht club "Kalyazin"
- Address: Rybzavoda village.
This is a popular place with tourists. Especially in summer. There is everything for a pleasant pastime - various berths for yachts, a summer cafe with a picturesque view, a helipad, areas for receiving tourist groups.
And for little Kalyazin residents, the club has created conditions for sailing. But that's not all. The owner of the establishment, Vladimir Olenin, opened a snail farm there, where they grow grape snails. Reviews say that this is the only production of this type in Russia that deals with snails all year round.
This farm has a tasting room where you can try a snail delicacy with white wine, and nearby local craftswomen sell unique souvenirs - knitted snails.
Vvedenskaya Church
The church was built at the end of the 19th century in a cemetery where local nobility had funeral services and were buried. A small church made of red brick in the shape of a quadrangle and hipped domes. A small bell tower with ringing bells adorns the building. The main value today is the relics of St. Macarius of Kalyazin stored here.
Modern objects interesting to visit
Kalyazin, whose attractions can be modern in nature, attracts tourists in this direction as well. The modern features of this city add additional color against the backdrop of historical sites.
Radio telescope RT-64
This radio telescope, 180 m high, belongs to the Kalyazin Radio Astronomy Observatory. The giant plate of this object looks very impressive even from afar.
It is prohibited for outsiders to visit the observatory, but you can contemplate it from the outside when leaving Kalyazin towards Uglich.
Abandoned sanatorium
Very close to Kalyazin, on a peninsula in the Paulino forest area, there is an impressive unfinished Soviet-era cardiological sanatorium. This facility was built by the Ministry of Defense from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. and was designed for 500 seats.
The unfinished sanatorium attracts representatives of technogenic tourism.
Humpback Bridge
In 1935, a bridge across the river was built in Kalyazin. Zhabnya, which connected Zarechye with the old town. The configuration of the upper part of the bridge looks truly humpbacked. The panoramic view of this object allows us to classify it as a local feature.
Ascension Church
The temple, classic for the 18th century, differs from similar buildings in its rather high bell tower. The three tiers of the bell tower with columns are topped with a high spire, which is very reminiscent of the belfry of the famous St. Nicholas Cathedral. It is noteworthy that after the revolution, on the territory of the cemetery adjacent to the church, the Bolsheviks built a stadium, completely erasing the memory of their ancestors.
Funny name Zhabnya
And here comes the Volga. Ha, the mistake is not the Volga yet, but only its tributary - the Zhabnya River. Who could tell why she was given such a frog nickname? Or did it come from the buttercup-like medicinal plant toadwort?
There are cars along the shore selling fish. We stop and ask the price. And oats, that is, the catch, is not cheap these days: a small roach costs 100 rubles, a small smoked greenling costs 200 rubles... I sighed sadly - on the Western Dvina for that kind of money they bought such a huge fish.
Monument to M. V. Skopin-Shuisky
In memory of the victorious Russian-Lithuanian battle near Kalyazino in 1609, when the Russian troops were led by Skopin-Shuisky, a unique monument was erected. The composition consists of two boulders, one on top of the other. On the bottom there is a bas-relief of a military leader, above the top there is a large eagle holding prey in its talons - Lithuanian banners.
Snail farm
The only snail farm in the Tver region and the largest snail farm in Russia is located in Kalyazin.
Not only is it a high-tech enterprise, equipped with modern equipment, including an automatic fogging system, maintaining humidity and temperature, but on its territory there is a museum and a tasting room. The museum presents a unique collection of snails, and also allows visitors to learn the history of the appearance of snail farms, their development and the use of snails in economic activities. Many exhibits exist only in a single copy and were grown in Kalyazin specifically for the museum.
The tasting room is designed in a style typical of French Provence and is aimed at marketing. Visitors to the excursion are introduced to unusual dishes, which are necessarily accompanied by a glass of white wine.

In honor of the man who founded the Trinity-Kalyazin monastery, a monument was erected in one of the most beautiful places near the coast of the reservoir. Bronze Macarius appears to be emerging from a white church and addressing its parishioners. Where is the flooded city of Kalyazin located?
And the town of Kalyazin itself is located on the right bank of the Volga, 190 km from Moscow. And from Tver at about the same distance.
You can get to Kalyazin from Moscow from Savelovsky station by train; in Savelovo, change to the train to Kalyazin. You can also take a bus from the same Savelovsky station. But, of course, the most convenient way is to travel by car from Moscow along the Yaroslavskoye Highway towards Sergiev Posad, and then head north towards Uglich and Rybinsk.
That's how quickly our one-day excursion ended, a short tour to Kalyazin. Time flew by. But for you to know what to see in Kalyazin in one day, I took excellent photos describing the sights of Kalyazin. The town left in my soul a quiet sadness and a state of some kind of pity from its provincial neglect!
You can find all the sights of Kalyazin on the city map (it can be enlarged by clicking on “+” to better view the territory).
Our trip to Kalyazin took place on July 12, 2016. And then our path lies to the city of Rybinsk, from where we will take a ride through other nearby Volga cities: Uglich and Myshkin.
Are you ready to continue your walk with us? Then GO!
Other sights of the Tver region, where I was able to visit, are on this map.
Share in the comments which provincial Russian cities you have visited and which of them made the most unforgettable impression.

An artificially created reservoir with a number of dams makes it possible to provide electricity to the population and enterprises of many Russian cities. Its length is 146 kilometers and its width is 5 kilometers, which is very convenient for organizing shipping.

Baba Yaga's estate
In the village of Solonovka near Kalyazin, on a small private territory, an amazing open-air museum was created for lovers of Russian fairy tales and folklore - Baba Yaga's Estate. Children have especially strong emotions after visiting this place - right in front of the gates, guests are greeted by a real fairy-tale villain with a broom and a hooked nose and given a tour of her property. And there really is something to see here:
