Lodeynoye Pole

(Russian: Lodeynoye Pole, lit.
field of boats
) is a town and administrative center of Lodeynopolsky District in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the river. R. Svir (Lake Ladoga basin) 244 km (152 miles) northeast of St. Petersburg. Population: 20,674 (2010 Census);[3]22,830 (2002 Census);[8]26,718 (1989 Census);[9]21,400 (1972).

Briefly about the city

The city of Lodeynoye Pole is located in the east of the Leningrad region, on the left bank of the Svir River. Important roads pass through the city:

  • R-21 "Cola" - St. Petersburg - Murmansk;
  • A-114 - Vologda - Novaya Ladoga;
  • 41K-001 - Lodeynoye Pole - Vytegra (unofficial name Arkhangelsk tract).

The railway connects Lodeynoye Pole with St. Petersburg and Murmansk. The Svir River is an important water transport artery providing navigation between the Baltic and the White Sea.

Urban development stretches from west to east for 8 km, from west to south - for 3.5 km. The population does not exceed 20 thousand people.

Lodeynoye Pole is located near the coast of Lake Ladoga

History of Lodeynoye Pole

Lodeynoye Pole appeared on the map of Russia in 1702. Russian Tsar Peter I found this place suitable for organizing a shipyard. Tall masted pines grew on the banks of the Svir, and the residents of the local village have been building river and lake ships since ancient times. In addition, the Olonets ironworks were located not far from Lodeynoye Pole, which made it possible to equip the built ships with weapons at minimal cost. The established shipyard was named Olonetskaya, and a year later the first ships for the Baltic Fleet were launched. The shipyard's distance from the theater of military operations in the Baltic made it possible to build ships without fear of attacks from hostile Sweden.

The frigate "Standard" became the first ship built at the Lodeynoye Pole shipyard

In modern terms, the shipyard became the city-forming enterprise of Lodeynoye Pole. Despite the fact that several shipyards were also founded in St. Petersburg, Lodeynoye Pole retained a leading role in the construction of ships for the navy for more than 100 years. In 1829, the shipyard closed, and Lodeynoye Pole turned into a quiet provincial town.

The importance of the city increased in 1915, when a section of the Olonets railway was laid through Lodeynoye Pole, and the city became an important railway junction. In the 1930s, the Svirlag Correctional Labor Camp Administration was located in the city, and several camps for political prisoners appeared in the vicinity of Lodeynoye Pole.

During the Great Patriotic War the city suffered great destruction. For almost three years, the front line of defense of the Karelian Front passed through Lodeynoye Pole: the city turned into a stronghold consisting of trenches, firing points and dugouts. In the summer of 1944, the front line moved north, and peaceful life began to improve in the city.

Industry

There are forestry and food industry enterprises.[14]

Transport

The railway connection between St. Petersburg and Murmansk passes through Lodeynoye Pole.

The M18 Highway, connecting St. Petersburg and Murmansk, also passes Lodeynoye Pole. The asphalt road branches east at Lodeynoye Pole and continues to Vytegra in the Vologda region through Podporozhye. There are also local roads.

The Volga-Baltic waterway, connecting the Volga and Neva River basins, follows the Svir River. The waterway is regularly used by cruise and cargo services.

Military

The city was home to the Lodeynoye Pole Air Base, which hosted the regiment's interceptor aircraft during the Cold War.

Sights of Lodeynoye Pole

Many tourists complain that there are almost no attractions in Lodeynoye Pole. This is partly true. Most of the buildings of historical value were destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. The monuments to the fallen heroes, erected immediately after the war, essentially became the main and mournful attractions of the city. And in the vicinity of Lodeynoye Pole, surrounded by majestic northern nature, ancient monasteries have been preserved.

Monument to Peter I

The ancient obelisk on the banks of the Svir is one of the few monuments to the pre-revolutionary history of the city. According to legend, in this place at the beginning of the 18th century there was a house in which Peter I stayed during his visits to the Olonets shipyard. The house was temporary and, naturally, has not survived to this day. After the abolition of the shipyard, a local merchant decided to preserve the memory of the emperor-shipbuilder and erected a memorial sign at his own expense.

The obelisk to Peter I was installed in a picturesque location on the river bank

40 years later, the majestic building of the Cathedral of Peter and Paul appeared next to the obelisk. This beautiful temple, built in the classicist style, was a true decoration of Lodeynoye Pole, but the cathedral has not survived to this day. During the Great Patriotic War, the temple was badly damaged by artillery shelling, and soon after the war the ruins of the cathedral were dismantled. Now the only reminders of the temple are the worship cross installed in its place and old color photographs.

The image of the Peter and Paul Cathedral was preserved thanks to the works of the famous photographer Prokudin-Gorsky

It is still unclear whether this temple will be restored in the future. As for the house of Peter I, city authorities have long declared their intention to restore this historical object. Certain work on landscaping the area is already underway: a number of small architectural forms depicting ship guns and anchors have been installed.

Park "Svirskaya Victory"

The memory of the Great Patriotic War in Lodeynoye Pole is preserved by the Svirskaya Victory Park. In a sense, this memorial arose spontaneously immediately after the front line moved away from the city. At the site of the most fierce battles there remained mass graves of Soviet soldiers, trenches, dugouts, places for firing points, and piles of mangled equipment. It was decided to immortalize these evidence of heroic deeds in the form of an open-air museum. In the Soviet Union, this park became one of the very first memorials dedicated to the Great Patriotic War.

On one of the monuments the text of the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief is engraved, and on top there once stood a figure of Stalin

Memorials were built on the site of mass graves. Personal monuments and gravestones were erected for individual heroes. The places of the most fierce battles are marked with signs. Pavilions were built for the exhibition of technology. For unknown political reasons, the park was closed as a museum complex in 1951. The pavilions with equipment have been liquidated. The exhibits were taken to other museums. All that remained were memorials and quiet, sad alleys.

Address: Lenin Ave., 122.

Museum of Local Lore

After the liquidation of the Svirskaya Victory museum complex, the only building left in the park was converted into a local history museum in 1968. The museum's collection contains about 17 thousand exhibits reflecting the history of the Lodeynopolsky district from the primitive era to the present. The museum staff paid special attention to the period of the Great Patriotic War and the birth of the city. For example, the hall displays a model of a shipyard, which shows three stages of ship construction: laying the keel, manufacturing the longitudinal-transverse set and the finished hull of the ship.

Before the opening of the local history museum, the building housed a club

Information about the museum:

  • address: Lenin Ave., 122;
  • Opening hours: in summer - Wed-Sun from 10:00 to 17:00; other seasons - Tue-Sat;

Holy Trinity Alexander-Svirsky Monastery

This Orthodox monastery appeared in the local forests at the end of the 15th century. The monastery was founded by the Russian ascetic Reverend Alexander Svirsky. According to the lives of the saints, Alexander Svirsky spent more than 25 years in seclusion, indulging in fervent prayers and fasting. As a reward for such asceticism, Alexander was endowed with the gift of healing the sick. The fame of Alexander Svirsky’s miraculous abilities attracted local residents and Orthodox pilgrims to the monk. Believers built cells and settled next to their spiritual father. Thus, a monastic community gradually arose, and Saint Alexander became abbot of the monastery.

The Alexander-Svirsky Monastery is located on the shore of a picturesque lake

Most of the monastery's buildings date back to the 17th–18th centuries. The bell tower is the tallest and youngest building of the monastery, built at the beginning of the 20th century. The Church of the Intercession is the only building that remembers the founder of the monastery, Alexander Svirsky. This temple was built with the direct participation of St. Alexander in 1533. According to legend, the Holy Trinity appeared to Alexander at this place. In memory of this event, the place of the phenomenon, marked with a special plaque, has been preserved inside the temple. The relics of St. Alexander of Svirsky are also buried here.

The incorrupt relics of St. Alexander are considered one of the best preserved remains of Russian saints. During the Civil War, a commission was even created that was supposed to recognize the incorruptibility of the relics as a fraud. However, authoritative experts confirmed the authenticity of the remains. Then, for 70 long years, the body of Alexander Svirsky disappeared. The remains were found in the late 90s in the storage facility of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. The staff of the institution secretly kept the relics of Alexander under the guise of an exhibit of the anatomical collection.

Information about the monastery:

  • address: village of Staraya Sloboda, 21 km north of Lodeynoye Pole;
  • Opening hours: daily from 8.00 to 20.00.

Vvedeno-Oyatsky Monastery

Another spiritual place associated with the life of Alexander Svirsky was the Vvedeno-Oyatsky Monastery. The saint was originally from these places, and his parents are buried here on the territory of the monastery. The exact time of the appearance of the monastery is unknown. It is quite possible that the monastery arose much earlier than the Alexander-Svirsk monastery. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery was exclusively wooden. Stone construction significantly transformed the appearance of the monastery. The monastery is famous for its healing radon spring, which cures serious illnesses.

The architectural appearance of the monastery buildings clearly shows the features of classicism.

Information about the monastery:

  • address: Oyat station, about 40 km southwest of Lodeynoye Pole;
  • Opening hours: daily from 9.00 to 19.00.

Intercession-Tervenichesky Monastery

This convent is the youngest in the area. A monastic community appeared in the village of Tervenichi in 1991, and 6 years later the highest clergy allowed the creation of a monastery here. In just over 20 years, the builders managed to create an architectural ensemble that is not inferior in beauty to the more ancient neighboring monasteries. The organization of the monastery has a clear layout and consistent style. Even if a visitor to the monastery is far from religion, the elegant architecture will undoubtedly bring aesthetic pleasure to anyone. The highlight of the monastery is the Assumption Church, in the lower part of which there is a prayer hall in the form of a cave temple.

All buildings on the territory of the monastery seem light and airy

Information about the monastery:

  • address: Tervenichi village, st. Nagornaya, 30; 75 km southwest of Lodeynoye Pole;
  • Opening hours: daily from 9.00 to 19.00.

Polenovsky places near Akulova Gora

Shark Mountain is a small village 30 km from Lodeynoye Pole. The famous Russian artist Vasily Polenov spent part of his life here. The Polenov family owned the Imochenitsa estate near Shark Mountain. Once upon a time there was a three-story wooden house here, now on this site there is a temple in the style of northern wooden architecture. Polenov first came here at the age of 10, and since then Akulova Mountain has become a place of inspiration and a living setting for the artist’s paintings. Time has not preserved any traces of the estate, except for the cedar grove planted by Polenov.

The temple was built on the site of the Polenovs' estate house

The memory of Polenov has been preserved largely thanks to the efforts of local artists Gretsky. This married couple organized an unofficial museum of the artist’s work in their home. Reproductions of Polenov are on display here. In addition, Yuri and Irina Gretsky are engaged in restoring the appearance of Polenov’s former estate. At the expense of the family, a wooden temple was built, the paintings of which were also done by the Gretsky couple.

Address: Akulov Gora village, 35 km south of Lodeynoye Pole.

Nizhne-Svirsky Nature Reserve

Lodeynoye Pole is located in a unique natural area. Local swamps and forests serve as a haven for migratory birds, and valuable fish species spawn in the lower reaches of the Svir. To protect the natural world of the lower reaches of the Svir, a reserve was created in 1980, which is open to everyone. For ecotourism lovers, the administration of the reserve has developed five routes with a total length of over 100 km. It is impossible to visit all the interesting places in one day, so the reserve offers accommodation in its own hotel especially for guests. Visiting the reserve requires prior application. All movements within the environmental protection zone are carried out only when accompanied by reserve staff.

In the Nizhne-Svirsky Nature Reserve there are areas where tourists can observe the life of bears

Information about the reserve:

  • visitor center address: the village of Kovkenitsy, 45 km southwest of Lodeynoye Pole;
  • Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00–17:00;
  • cost of services: sightseeing tour - 400 rubles; excursions along eco-trails - from 600 to 2200 rubles. for a group of up to 7 people.

Pottery crafts of Alekhovshchina

The main souvenirs of Lodeynoye Pole are considered to be Oyat ceramics. Pottery has long been a traditional occupation of the Vepsians, the local indigenous inhabitants. One of the centers of pottery making is located in the village of Alyokhovshchina. The banks of the Oyat River in these places are rich in red clay, which is ideal for making ceramics. The art of Oyat craftsmen was so high that their products were used even at the imperial court. A collection of pottery is exhibited at the Alekhovshchina Crafts Center. Here you can not only look, but also buy the ceramics you like.

Oyat ceramics include not only dishes, but also human figurines and animal figurines.

Information about the center:

  • address: c. Alekhovshchina, st. Alekhovshchinskaya, 20.
  • Opening hours: Mon-Fri, from 10.00 to 17.00.

Village of Verkhniye Mandrogi

The name of this settlement became widely known to tourists in the early 2000s. On the site of a village destroyed during the Great Patriotic War, a tourist center was created that recreated the culture and way of life of the Russian North. Guests can not only look at examples of ancient village architecture, but also stay in one of these houses. The village of Mandrogi has become such a popular place among Russian and foreign tourists that sometimes several cruise ships accumulate at the pier. The complex includes about 60 different objects. Among them:

  • forge;
  • stable;
  • weaving workshop;
  • pottery;
  • vodka museum

The atmosphere of a Russian village reigns in Mandrogi.
Guests of the village can try to master any craft presented in the village. For this purpose, the center’s staff have developed many different master classes. Visitors show great interest in the “Immersion in the 19th Century” program. The subject abandons all the delights of modern life for several days and lives in a Russian hut, in a rural living environment of the 19th century.

Information about the tourist center:

  • address: Verkhniye Mandrogi village, 33 km east of Lodeynoye Pole;
  • cost: sightseeing tour - 400 rubles; master classes - from 900 rubles.

Lodeynoye Pole and Podporozhye: taiga dead end

Two distant districts of the Leningrad region “hid” from modern economic development in the forest wilds of the northeast of the region. What is the price of this patriarchal primordiality?

On unknown paths

The situation with transport connections in both distant districts of the Leningrad region is difficult. Lodeynoye Pole is located at the crossroads of three important highways for the North-West of Russia: “Kola”, connecting St. Petersburg and Murmansk, which became the federal road A215 in 2022 (via Vytegra to Prokshino, to the Plesetsk cosmodrome and to Brin-Navolok, that is, it also passes through the territory of the Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions), as well as the regional highway P36, which connects the city with Alyokhovshchina, Tikhvin, Budogoshch and Chudovo (Novgorod region). The distance from the Northern capital of Russia along the Kola to Lodeynoye Pole is 246 kilometers.

Lodeynoye Pole is located at the crossroads of three important highways for the North-West of Russia

The city of Podporozhye is located approximately 43 kilometers from Lodeynoye Pole and, accordingly, 290 kilometers from St. Petersburg. This same highway A215 passes through it, which recently received federal status and has not yet changed from gravel to asphalt in all sections (especially in the Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions).

By the way

Looking ahead a little, let’s say that it is extremely difficult to maintain the few roads in both areas in standard condition due to the heavy traffic on them of heavy timber trucks serving the most important (if not the only) sector of the local economy - timber harvesting.

The railway station in Lodeynoye Pole, located on the route from St. Petersburg to Petrozavodsk and further to Murmansk, has been in operation since 1916. The Podporozhye station also operates on the same line, but it is located away from the city - at a distance of almost 10 kilometers.

These are the main logistics corridors on land, but we should not forget that both cities stand on the banks of the deep-flowing Svir, and for many decades it was the river that was the main highway for both Lodeynoye Pole and Podporozhye. What about now?

Has it sunk into oblivion?

Svir is part of the famous Volga-Baltic waterway; cargo ships followed it from Lake Onega to Lake Ladoga and further along the Neva to the Gulf of Finland.

Svir is part of the famous Volga-Baltic waterway

In 2022, 19.5 thousand ship voyages were made through Volgo-Balt, which transported 15.8 million tons of cargo and 349 thousand passengers. The volume of transportation during navigation in 2022 amounted to 16.2 million tons (more than 8 million tons - construction cargo, 1.7 million tons - ferrous metals, 1.5 million tons each - forest products and petroleum products). Most of these cargoes traveled along the Svir. Although the total length of the Volgo-Balt is approximately 1,100 kilometers, the main working route is on the route Cherepovets - St. Petersburg.

If in Lodeynoye Pole there is only a pier for mooring passenger cruise ships, then in Podporozhye in the 80s of the twentieth century the largest river port in the North-West of the Soviet Union was built, the fate of which has been worrying industry specialists for several years.

The Podporozhye port is located on an area of more than 32 hectares (the site is federally owned), a 640-meter-long berth was built here, 22 overhead cranes with a lifting capacity of 16 tons each handled more than 3 million tons of bulk, bulk and packaged cargo per year.

The port has about four kilometers of railway tracks. The equipment made it possible to process five ships simultaneously and unload and load motor ships, wagons and vehicles using the “direct option”.

Basically, the Podporozhye port provided transshipment of crushed stone and timber, receiving and sending cargo by rail, road and water transport, transshipment of export and import cargo, freight forwarding services, fleet bunkering services, reception of oily water and garbage from ships.

Podporozhye port provided transshipment of crushed stone and timber, receiving and sending cargo by rail, road and water transport

But, alas, back in 2013, the bankruptcy procedure of Podporozhye Port OJSC began at the request of the tax service due to a debt of seven million rubles. Gradually, the total claims of creditors increased to 107.9 million rubles. At the same time, the company’s revenue at the end of 2016 amounted to 15.6 million rubles, and net profit - 339 thousand rubles.

As of February 11, 2022, the company Public Joint Stock Company "Podporozhye Port" (authorized capital is 65.755 million rubles) is in the process of liquidation.

At the same time, back in 2022, information appeared that the St. Petersburg Limited Liability Company “Uni-Block” replenished its assets by acquiring the Podporozhye river port.

The main activity of the company is the procurement, processing, storage and sale of scrap ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Over the 6 years of foreign economic activity, the amount of scrap shipped by the company for export increased more than 3 times and exceeded 600 thousand tons per year.

On the company’s website, Podporozhye River Port appears as one of the scrap metal collection sites.

The volume of transportation along Voogo-Balt in navigation 2022 amounted to 16.2 million tons

There is no information about any plans for the development of the harbor. At the same time, experts note that in addition to forest wealth, only in the Podporozhye region there are huge deposits of clay suitable for making bricks (up to 4,318 thousand cubic meters), sand (36,264 thousand cubic meters), peat (35,146 thousand tons), building and facing stones (15 397 and 1512 thousand cubic meters respectively). Taking into account the interests of the construction industry, large-scale development of these deposits will inevitably begin, and then this port will be simply necessary. Apparently the right time has not come yet.

By the way

On December 23, 2022, the Podporozhye OJSC Svir Shipyard was also liquidated. The company specialized in the construction of amphibious hovercraft, including for military purposes.

The forest is being cut down - the chips are flying

It is enough to look at photographs taken from space and now completely accessible on the Internet to see in the Lodeynopolsky and especially Podporozhye districts numerous plots where forests have been cut down in significant quantities over the years. Indeed, timber harvesting and processing is the main economic sector of both municipalities.

For 9 months of 2019, the volume of timber harvesting in the Podporozhye district by large and medium-sized enterprises in the region amounted to 441.8 thousand cubic meters

In the Lodeynopolsky district, 549.7 thousand cubic meters of wood were harvested over 9 months of 2022. The development of the estimated logging area amounted to 68.4 percent. There are 8 enterprises-tenants of forest plots operating in the district.

The administration of the Podporozhye district is in no hurry to publish economic indicators, so we have to use data for 9 months of 2022. During this period, the volume of timber harvested by large and medium-sized enterprises in the region amounted to 441.8 thousand cubic meters, 206.52 thousand cubic meters of lumber and 180.79 thousand cubic meters of industrial chips were produced.

By the way

In 2006, the Finnish concern Metsä Botnia launched a sawmill with a capacity of 230 thousand cubic meters of materials per year. The Metsä Svir enterprise occupies an area of 28 hectares. The installed equipment allows processing logs with a diameter of 14 to 32 centimeters and a length of 3 to 6 meters. Raw materials are delivered to the enterprise by road.

In addition, the largest industrial enterprises in the Podporozhye region are a plant for the production of building concrete products, Metsya Forest Podporozhye (harvesting and processing of wood), Voznesenskaya Electronic Warfare Fleet (ship repair), BTK Group (tailoring of workwear) and "Shcheleyki Quarry" (stone mining).

The Lodeynopolsky district cannot boast of large industrial enterprises. Heinrich Graftio was built here in Soviet times (1927-1935) . And in the Podporozhye district there is the Verkhne-Svirskaya hydroelectric power station (1938-1952), thanks to which the very rapids that gave the name to the workers’ village, which received the status of a city in 1956, were “defeated.”

The crocodile can't be caught, the coconut doesn't grow

For 9 months of 2022, the consolidated budget of the Lodeynopolsky district received revenues, the amount of which slightly exceeds 1 billion rubles (tax and non-tax revenues - 361 million rubles and gratuitous revenues from the regional budget - 669.5 million rubles).

More than 6,000 tourists visit the Podporozhye district every year. About half of them go to ethnocultural

For nine months of 2022, the consolidated budget of the Podporozhye district received revenues totaling 958.2 million rubles, with an annual plan of 1.4 billion rubles (68.8 percent of execution). Compared to the corresponding period last year, receipts decreased by eight percent.

The plan for the receipt of tax and non-tax revenues was fulfilled by 72.7 percent (355.7 million rubles with an annual plan of 489.3 million rubles). Gratuitous receipts from the Leningrad Region budget amounted to 602.5 million rubles.

A few words about the agricultural industry. Almost the entire territory of the Leningrad region belongs to the risky farming zone, which is even more important for the northeast of the region.

As of the fall of 2022, in the Podporozhye district there were actually five fishing enterprises and two individual entrepreneurs engaged in fishing, seven farms and 1,680 personal subsidiary plots, where they mainly produce milk, dairy products, meat, honey, grow potatoes and vegetables.

The total number of large farm animals was 338 units (cows - 191), small cattle (sheep and goats) - 430 heads, rabbits - 1665 (decrease in numbers in all categories), poultry - 2795 heads.

In the territory of the Lodeynopolsky municipal district, following the results of nine months of 2022, two agricultural enterprises operate (Agrofirm Rassvet LLC produces milk and cattle meat, has the status of a breeding reproducer and LLC Ecological Farm Alyokhovshchina - breeding sheep, goats and poultry ), 22 farms and 3492 personal subsidiary plots, 12 gardening and dacha non-profit associations.

The sown area was 4,034 hectares (86.8 percent for fodder crops, 7.6 percent for grain crops, 4.7 percent for potatoes).

State support for the development of agriculture in the region from the federal and regional budgets for all categories of agricultural producers for 9 months of 2022 amounted to 57.7 million rubles (176 percent compared to the same period last year).

Territory of pilgrims and extreme sports enthusiasts

The Lodeynopolsky district, due to the absence of large industrial enterprises, is quite sensitive to the development of tourism, reasonably considering this industry as perhaps the only point of growth for its economy.

The most attractive for pilgrims is
the Holy Trinity Monastery , which is located 21 kilometers from Lodeynoye Pole.
The volume of tax revenues from tourism for January-September 2020 in the region amounted to 1.770 million rubles in the regional budget, and 5.735 million rubles in the local budget. There are 18 hotels, recreation centers, guest houses and hostels, 40 cafes and restaurants.

By the way

Recently, information appeared that she intends to build a hotel in Lodeynoye Pole from modular structures with 126 rooms. The first 50 of them will be put into operation this year, the second stage is planned to be built by 2027. Investments will amount to approximately 150 million rubles.

During the navigation period of 2022, cruise ships with foreign and Russian tourists (more than 14 thousand people) called at the berths of Lodeynoye Pole and the village of Svirstroy 74 times.

Of particular importance for the region is the influx of pilgrims to the Orthodox monasteries located here.

The Vvedeno-Oyatsky convent is located approximately 200 kilometers east of St. Petersburg. Monuments from the 11th century were found in burial mounds along the Oyat River. The first information about this monastery is contained in the life of St. Alexander of Svirsky, written in 1545. The monastery was reopened on December 27, 1993. Now 13 nuns live in it.

The Intercession-Tervenichesky convent arose in the 90s of the twentieth century near the ruins of the stone Assumption (now Intercession) Church. Mention of the local churchyard is contained in Russian chronicles of the early 12th century.

But, of course, the most attractive for pilgrims is the Holy Trinity Monastery , which is located 21 kilometers from Lodeynoye Pole. The monastery was founded by the holy venerable Alexander of Svirsky at the end of the 15th century. Even during his lifetime, the monastery developed as a union of two settlements: at the fraternal cells - the Trinity complex, at the monastery cemetery - Preobrazhensky. Both complexes today represent a single monument of the 16th-19th centuries.

The temple in the name of the Holy Great Martyr George on Lake Yuksovskoye in the present village of Rodionovo was founded in the 90s of the 15th century

During the years of Soviet power, the monastery was used as a forced labor camp, children's and disabled homes. For some time there was a technical school here, and in the Trinity complex from 1953 to 2009 there was a Svir psychiatric hospital. The restoration of the monastery began in 1997.

More than 6,000 tourists visit the Podporozhye district every year. About half of them go to ethnocultural.

Let us remind you that this tourist center serves travelers who arrive along Svir on cruise ships, by car on the highway, you can also get by rail to Podporozhye (27 kilometers from the base) or by your own helicopter.

Guests here are offered accommodation in a hotel or in log buildings of various sizes - from a hut to a manor house. For entertainment - the Museum of Russian Vodka, black baths and spa with cedar fonts, horseback riding, mini-zoo, quail farm, restaurants, bars, etc.

On the territory of the Podporozhye district there are 126 historical and architectural monuments, including 64 of wooden architecture.

For example, the temple in the name of the Holy Great Martyr George on Lake Yuksovskoye in the present village of Rodionovo was founded in the 90s of the 15th century. This is the oldest wooden church in Russia, remaining in its historical place (two more from approximately the same period were moved to museum-reserves). Yuksovichi is an ancient settlement mentioned in the Charter of the Novgorod prince Svyatoslav Olgovich in 1137.

But it is clear that the heavy tourist flow to these shrines can be dangerous for them. Everything is good in moderation. These regions are also appreciated by those who like to overcome all sorts of potholes in SUVs.

For reference: the area of the Podporozhye district is 7.83 thousand square kilometers (10.46 percent of the area of the Leningrad region), the population is 27.7 thousand people (86.58 percent live in the district center and three villages), the population density is on average four people per square kilometer. The area of the Lodeynopolsky district is 4.91 thousand square kilometers (6.6 percent of the territory of the Leningrad region), the population is 28 thousand people (70.75 percent live in the regional center and the village of Svirstroy), this is 1.48 percent of the region’s population, that is, the smallest figure among the municipal districts of the Leningrad region.

Lodeynoye Pole for children

In the Lodeynopolsky district there are many options for entertaining and educational recreation for children, but two places are especially worth noting:

  1. Ozerko. This simple name is given to a small lake located within the city limits. Ozerko is a favorite vacation spot for city residents. Clean water, pine trees and sand are perfect for families with children. The beach is free and equipped with changing cabins. Rescue service is working. Ozerko is one of the few reservoirs in the Leningrad region that is allowed for swimming. Address: southwestern outskirts of the city, landmark - Ozerny Lane.

    The picturesque shore of Ozerko is perfect for a beach holiday

  2. Mandrogi. The tourist center in Verkhniye Mandrogi offers a large selection of educational entertainment for children:
      mini-zoo;
  3. quail farm;
  4. various attractions;
  5. master classes on folk crafts.

    In Mandrogi, even children can try themselves as a ferryman.
    The “Taiga Trail” master class is very popular among children. During this course, children learn the rules of behavior in the forest. They learn navigation, making fires and other useful skills.

Recreation options in Lodeynoye Pole

As a rule, tourists do not come to Lodeynoye Pole for the city’s attractions. The majority's interests are focused on monasteries and nature. In this situation, it makes more sense to use Lodeynoye Pole primarily as a base for trips to out-of-town attractions. To visit most interesting places, 2-3 days will be enough. If the traveler has a week, then the travel plan can be drawn up as follows:

  1. Getting to know the sights of Lodeynoye Pole.
  2. Trip to the Alexander-Svirsky Monastery.
  3. Visit to the historical village of Mandrogi.
  4. Visit to the Vvedeno-Oyatsky Monastery.
  5. Excursion to the Intercession-Tervenichesky Monastery.
  6. Inspection of Polenovsky places.
  7. Ecological tour of the Nizhne-Svirsky Nature Reserve.

Perhaps the most interesting option would be to visit Lodeynoye Pole as part of a river cruise tour to holy places. Most ships depart from St. Petersburg, there are several routes from Moscow. The cruise program includes such famous places as:

  • Valaam Monastery;
  • Kizhi;
  • Old Ladoga.

Travel tips

Before traveling to the Lodeynopolsky district, first of all you need to think about the weather. Internet sources write reassuringly that winter in Lodeynoye Pole is moderately cold. In fact, the temperature in winter drops to 20 degrees below zero. Summer is also not particularly warm: the average temperature in July does not exceed 20 degrees Celsius. Therefore, even in summer, warm clothes will be relevant.

Otherwise, tourists in Lodeynoye Pole have nothing to worry about. The city does not have any special negative factors. Thanks to transit tourist flows, the city is well supplied with hotels and food outlets.
