Tune in to the wave of the Leningrad Rock Club

Viktor Tsoi, Mike Naumenko, Boris Grebenshchikov, Sergey Kuryokhin, Alexander Bashlachev, Leonid Fedorov, Yuri Shevchuk, Fedor Chistyakov - if these are important names for you, take a walk through the places that are important to them.

A good place to start is at house No. 49 on Nevsky Prospekt - until 1989, the semi-mythical Saigon cafe was located here, where all the life of the then underground was in full swing. Brodsky and Dovlatov, Kuryokhin and BG, punks and hippies, artists and poets came here. Now a five-star hotel has opened on this site.

Around the corner, on Stremyannaya, 11, there was the Elf cafe: during the renovation of Saigon, all the disputes, sermons and fights of the creative intelligentsia moved here. This cafe is also long gone, but Dmitrovsky Square next to the house is still called the “Elf Garden”.

The next point on the map is Rubinshteina, 13. Previously, the Leningrad Rock Club was located at this address, now there is a children's musical theater called Zazerkalye, and the entrance to the courtyard, covered with messages from rock fans, is closed. But it’s still worth walking along Rubinshteina Street: this is one of the main restaurant and drinking streets of the city and the rocker spirit is still felt here.

Lennon is alive! You can easily verify this in art. Since 1989, this place has been branded as a citadel of semi-basement art: there is John Lennon Street, a yellow submarine is “moored” here, art galleries with crazy exhibitions work here, indie musicians perform here, which few people know yet, songs are recorded here Boris Grebenshchikov. One of the Aquarium albums is even named after the art center on Pushkinskaya, 10, and BG knows a lot about places of power.

Another important stop on the Leningrad Rock Club route is the Kamchatka boiler house on Blokhina Street, 15, Petrogradka. This is the same stoker where Tsoi, Bashlachev and the founder of “Alice” Zaderiy once worked. Now in the former boiler room there is a club-museum, where evenings are held in memory of the leader of the Kino group.

Take a look around all of Russia

In terms of the size of the exhibition, the national show museum “Grand Maket Russia” is second only to Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, and in Russia it is the largest - 800 m² with exhibits on a scale of 1:87.

Models of the regions of our country with miniature scenes impress both children and adults: here day and night change every 13 minutes, little people relax in the country in the summer and clear snow in the winter, cars and buses flash signal lights and stop at red, and trains from St. Petersburg arrive to Vladivostok in 18 minutes. Be careful, it’s easy to get stuck in “Grand Maket” for the whole day.

Nevsky Avenue

  • Address: St. Petersburg, Nevsky Ave.

Nevsky Prospekt is the main street of St. Petersburg, where there are many attractions, museums, historical houses, cafes and shops. Nevsky Prospect starts from the bank of the Neva at the Admiralty and ends at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. It is convenient to start the route from the Admiralteyskaya metro station.

Various events are often held on Nevsky Prospekt. Walking along the main street, you will see many famous sights in the center of St. Petersburg. We recommend visiting the Kuptsov Eliseevs store (Nevsky Prospekt, 56). This store sells various desserts, deli meats, spices, oils, and even black caviar. Find out how shawarma differs from shawarma

Those who find it too gray in St. Petersburg should check out the street food restaurant BBQ Shaverma street food on Bolshoy Prospekt V.O., where shawarma is served in colorful pita breads. For example, the blue one is shawarma with cod and tartar sauce, the black one is with beef and pepper sauce, and the green one is a vegetarian version with Adyghe cheese and Indian sauce.

You can argue as much as you like: a curb or a curb, a loaf or a bun, an entrance or a front door, a turtleneck or a badlon - but shawarma has already become as much a symbol of St. Petersburg as the White Nights. This Middle Eastern dish of minced meat with vegetables in lavash or pita bread is perceived as a St. Petersburg specialty, as if it has nothing in common with ordinary shawarma.

Where is the best shawarma in St. Petersburg? Everyone has their own places. “I haven’t eaten shawarma anywhere better than on Nevsky,” admits Vasya Vasin from the group “Bricks” in the SPB song. You can taste it at the corner of Nevsky and Liteiny: the point is legendary and proven by more than one generation of connoisseurs.

Another iconic place in St. Petersburg is the shawarma at the intersection of Sofiyskaya and Bela Kun streets. It’s far from the center, but people come especially for this shawarma, they tell their colleagues about it, they bring friends to try it.

Another decent shawarma establishment in St. Petersburg is Master Kebab on Pionerskaya. Friendly and neat Moroccans cook there; the dish is prepared in three forms - in pita bread, in pita bread and on a plate. The network has other points - for example, on Nevsky, 88.

The shawarma “U Zakhara” near the Novocherkasskaya metro station is highly praised, but the prices there are higher than in the places already mentioned. In Kupchin, at the intersection of Yaroslav Hasek and Kupchinskaya streets, everything is much more democratic. By the way, they make perhaps the largest shawarma in St. Petersburg here: it also has a reputation for being honest and incredibly tasty.

Opening a street art museum in an existing production facility in an industrial zone is what St. Petersburg is all about. Since the mid-20th century, laminates have been produced, which, for example, are used to decorate elevators and kitchen countertops. And since 2012, works by popular Russian and foreign street artists have been exhibited right there, right on the workshop walls.

St. Isaac's Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in St. Petersburg, which has an interesting and rich history. Initially, St. Isaac's Cathedral was a wooden church, which was built in honor of the Byzantine monk Isaac of Dalmatia (his memorial day falls on the birthday of Peter the Great). St. Isaac's Cathedral was constantly changing. Instead of a wooden church, they made a stone one, then they built a new one, but it did not correspond to the main building. And only in 1818 did they begin construction of a new temple designed by the architect Auguste Montferrand. The cathedral turned out to be truly luxurious and monumental. It was given museum status in 1948. Since then it has been one of the main attractions of St. Petersburg in the city center.

Having visited the temple, you will see the luxurious decoration and feel the sacred atmosphere. But you can go beyond just visiting the cathedral and go up to the Colonnade, which offers beautiful views (tickets for the colonnade are sold separately). To get to the observation deck, you will have to climb 262 steps, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Don't forget to wear warm clothes, as it can be windy on the Colonnade. You can relax after visiting St. Isaac's Cathedral and its Colonnade in the panoramic restaurant "Mansarda", which is located nearby. You can get acquainted with the architectural masterpiece on excursions to St. Isaac's Palace from the outside and inside , the entire center of St. Petersburg and St. Isaac's Cathedral .

Rare books on psychology, philosophy and art, which can only be found in libraries, are republished by the independent printing house Svoe Publishing House. Solve the riddles of the sphinxes on Vaska

Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg is a mystical place. Right on the University embankment, for example, the ancient Egyptian sphinxes, which are 3.5 thousand years old, remain silent. It is believed that if you look into their syenite eyes for too long, you can go crazy.

In the courtyard of Wilhelm Pehl's old pharmacy on the 7th line of Vasilievsky Island there is a brick boiler chimney. According to urban legend, inside, a pharmacist and alchemist tried to turn mercury into gold, searched for a formula for happiness and bred griffins. The mythical half-lions, half-eagles allegedly still flock to their nest in the Griffin Tower - at least the locals claim that on a full moon they hear their cries and see the reflections of black wings in the windows.

Why, even a real dragon lives on Vaska! He is registered in house 23 on the 8th line of V.O., and it is easy to find him in the courtyard between Bolshoy Prospekt, 7th and 8th lines.

Bronze Horseman

  • Address: St. Petersburg, Senate Square

The Bronze Horseman is a visiting card of St. Petersburg and another attraction in the city center. The monument is located on the spacious Senate Square. Here in 1825 the Decembrist uprising took place. The monument was created on the initiative of Catherine II. It is no coincidence that there is an inscription on the pedestal in Russian and Latin: “To PETER the First, Catherine, second summer 1782.”

A plaster model of the monument was made in 1778 according to the design of the French sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet. The monument was cast by Emelyan Khailov. Together with Etienne-Falconet, they selected the alloy. However, during casting, an unexpected situation occurred - the pipe through which bronze was poured burst. Fortunately, Emelyan Khailov found a way out of this situation: he wet his jacket with water, coated it with clay and closed the pipe. As a result, Emelyan Khailov managed to prevent the fire, but he received burns.

The grand opening of the monument took place on August 7, 1782. Catherine II was present at this event. She sailed along the Neva in a boat and then climbed onto the balcony of the Senate building. You can learn the history of the monument on the Tsar the Carpenter .

However, all these statues are copies; the originals are in the Mikhailovsky Castle.

In the middle of the 19th century, a monument to the fabulist Ivan Krylov was erected here. Pyotr Klodt depicted him sitting with a book in his hands. And on the pedestal there is a high-relief composition with animals - characters from Ivan Krylov’s fables. Feel the Gunboat

Kanonersky Island, or in Finnish “Cat Island” of Kissasaari, will shock connoisseurs of ceremonial St. Petersburg: you need to go here only if you want to see the port, working, shipbuilding Leningrad. Uncomfortable, unkempt and real.

How to get to Kanonersky Island

Gutuevsky and Kanonersky islands are connected by an underwater tunnel under the Sea Canal. Walking or cycling through the Kanonersky Tunnel is downright scary, so it’s better to get to Kanonerka Tunnel by car or public transport.

• From the Sadovaya or Sennaya Ploshchad metro stations - minibuses K-115 and K-19.

• From the Baltiyskaya metro station - minibuses K-67 or K-267.

• From Yuzhno-Primorsky Park - minibus K-66.

Even those who consider Kanonerka a gray, dull industrial zone admit that the views from here are special. A port, caravans of dry cargo ships, a ship repair yard with buckets and docks, cranes that look like steampunk giraffes, Coal Harbor, Vasilyevsky Island and “its own little sea” - this is one of the best places in St. Petersburg to admire the sunset over the Gulf of Finland.

If you want to look at Finnish in a civilized place, go to the Park named after the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg in the Primorsky district. The sunsets here are also beautiful.

Ghost hunting: the coolest abandoned places in Russia

There’s also something to drink: here you’ll find white sbiten with bay leaf, rum with chamomile, and even polugar with fried bacon.

Relax in New Holland

Historically, New Holland is the first military port, founded by order of Peter I. Later, a naval prison, popularly nicknamed the “bottle,” and a brick forge were built on the island. In the experimental basin of New Holland, the Russian shipbuilder Krylov worked on the theory of vibration of ships and their unsinkability.

The island itself turned out to be unsinkable. During the First World War, the most powerful maritime radio station in Russia at that time operated in New Holland. In Soviet times, warehouses for the Leningrad naval base were built here - the island became a sensitive facility and a closed zone. Until 2004, the services of the Baltic Fleet were located here, and then the rights to the island were transferred to the administration of St. Petersburg - and New Holland began a completely different life.

After renovation, the island in the Admiralteysky district turned into a wonderful city park. Now New Holland has a children's playground and playing courts, a concert stage and a pavilion for exhibitions, film screenings and lectures. The forge is now the Kuznya House restaurant, and the former prison has turned into the free space “Bottle”. The first floor of the Bottle is dedicated to gastronomy, on the second you can look through comics and art albums, and on the third there is the realm of beauty and health. Here you can get a fashionable haircut, recharge in yoga or pedal on an exercise bike. For children, the Commandant’s House hosts the Mayak school of creative industries, and in winter in New Holland it’s great to go ice skating with the whole family.
