In the kaleidoscope of Volsk sights, the places on which the culture and life of the city as a whole rests stand out clearly. Visiting them will not take much time.
Museum of Local Lore
- Address: Revolyutsionnaya street, 6.
The Volsk Regional History Museum is one of the largest provincial museums in Russia. It began operating in 1920 and since then has become the cultural center of the city and a significant historical and cultural heritage of the entire Volsky district.
The museum exhibitions are based on the historical section. It presents valuable archeological collections to tourists. Here you can see the fossilized remains of prehistoric creatures, as well as traces of ancient people. In addition, the history section includes exhibitions of numismatics, ancient books, items of noble life and personal belongings of famous Volchan residents.
The nature section is no less extensive. Here, tourists' attention is drawn to minerals, collections of plants and stuffed animals living in the forests of the Saratov region.
The museum occupies the former mansion of the merchant Myasnikov. This is a monumental building in the eclectic style with an emphasis on classicism. It stands out against the backdrop of urban development with a massive half-tower with a helmet-shaped dome. On both sides of it rise colonnades with triangular pediments. Thanks to regular renovation work, the ancient building has retained its magnificent appearance and is a decoration of the city.
Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity
- Address: Freedom Square, 2.
The grandiose cathedral is located in the central part of the city on Freedom Square, which before the revolution was called Trinity in honor of the temple that adorned it. The history of the cathedral began at the end of the 17th century, when residents of the village of Malykavka (the former name of Volsk) erected a log church. In 1780, the village was transformed into the city of Volsk.
On the initiative of prominent public figure V.A. In Zlobin, construction of a stone temple began. The building became one of the most impressive structures in the city. The facades were decorated with graceful porticoes with colonnades, and a light drum covered a massive golden dome. The three-tier bell tower was crowned with a long spire.
The era of prosperity of the temple ended in 1934. The building was demolished and the empty space was taken by a life-size statue of Lenin.
In 2009, Trinity Cathedral was reborn from the ashes. It was rebuilt in a historical location, and not a single detail of its composition was subject to change. Today the temple is operational. It operates an information and educational center, a library and a Sunday school. In addition, the church has its own printing house, which produces the newspaper of the Volsky deanery.
Chalk quarry
- Coordinates on the map: 52.016965, 47.329327.
Volsk has an unusual hilly topography. The forested chalk mountains are visible from almost anywhere in the city. Their beauty has been preserved despite intensive mining.
Chalk, clay, limestone and flask are indispensable for the cement industry, which has received enormous development in the city. One of the most beautiful places in Volsk is connected with industry - the Chalk Quarry, which once belonged to the plant. After the quarry was abandoned, a picturesque lake formed in it. Trees and bushes grew on the banks, creating a kind of oasis.
The scoop marks are still visible in the quarry. Some visitors manage to find the remains of prehistoric mollusks. In 2016, an observation deck was created on the territory of the quarry. Since then it has become even more attractive to tourists.

Drama Theater
- Address: Revolyutsionnaya street, 3.
The Volsky Drama Theater was founded in November 1937 as a collective farm and state farm theater. Initially, life in it was supported solely by the enthusiasm of young actors and director V. Blok. Thanks to this enthusiasm, the modest establishment gradually became one of the most famous and high-class cultural centers in the Saratov region.
The theater puts on about ten original performances a year, a third of which are dedicated to entertaining children's audiences. Most of the performances take place in the Volsky branch, a Soviet building in the classicist style, where the theater moved in the 1960s. The art gallery is a branch of the Volsky Museum of Local Lore. It is located in a luxurious building in eclectic style. It was built in 1889 by order of merchant N.S. Menkova. This building is recognized as an architectural heritage of the city. Not only the abundant decoration of the facades, but also the interiors remained unchanged.
The rich decoration and authentic layout of the merchant mansions gives the art gallery a special atmosphere. Paintings hang along grand staircases, in stylish living rooms and spacious hallways. For greater effect, the premises are furnished with antique furniture and household items from a wealthy 19th century family.
The collection of paintings was created and transported to the Menkov mansion in 1920. It included canvases seized from merchants, family portraits, as well as works by legendary artists from the Tretyakov Gallery. The collection is not limited to masterpieces of Russian painters. Here you can also see works of foreign masters.
Natural History Museum
- Address: Lev Tolstoy street, 102.

The exhibition is divided into five halls dedicated to the geology, botany and fauna of the Saratov region.
A separate room tells about the prehistoric nature of the native land. Here are the fossil remains of creatures that lived during the Mesozoic era. In addition to artifacts discovered on the territory of Volsk, the museum exhibits the remains of dinosaurs brought from other countries.
Of particular interest is the diorama, which allows you to see the changing seasons and the flow of natural cycles in a few minutes.
In the 1930s, the British National Museum presented Wolsk with a unique collection of tropical butterflies. A little later, the fund was supplemented by a collection of ornamental stones from the Ural Museum of Geology.
Ancient Volsk architecture
A significant part of the development of Volsk consists of buildings that have been preserved on its streets since pre-revolutionary times. Among them there are merchant estates, as well as buildings that served the needs of the city.
Fire Tower
- Address: 1 May Street, 1.
The four-tiered brick tower with whitewashed decorative elements was erected in the second half of the nineteenth century next to the fire station. Despite the fact that the building is not in use, it is not in disrepair.
In 2022, the tower received the status of an object of historical heritage of Volsk. They planned to open a themed cafe there, but the idea had to be abandoned due to sanitary standards. In the future, it is planned to open an observation deck on the upper tier of the tower.
Gostiny Dvor
- Address: Kommunisticheskaya street, 9.
At the end of the 18th century, city leader V. Zlobin organized shopping arcades in the center of Volsk. On his initiative, a massive building stretched along the block, the facade of which is impenetrably decorated with snow-white columns with carved architraves.
Gostiny Dvor developed until 1812. During the Patriotic War, many merchants went bankrupt, which is why food, textile and ceramic shops in Gostiny Dvor significantly thinned out.
Despite periods of decline, the shopping arcades have always been used for their intended purpose. This was the case after the revolution, during the Great Patriotic War, and during peaceful Soviet times. Today, Gostiny Dvor is still home to various retail outlets, as well as offices.
Brewery
- Address: Tsementnikov street, 69.
The unique brick structure was built in 1806. The brewery building is designed in an eclectic style with elements of Gothic and Russian architecture. An unusual touch in the composition are the pointed gables with turrets and false dormers. Today the building is not in the best shape, but has retained its “zest”. It houses Kupets and Co. JSC.
Mansion of merchant A.A. Bryukhanova
- Address: st. Chernyshevsky, 65.
Andrei Bryukhanov served as the mayor of Volsk for a long time and was engaged in entrepreneurial activities. He owned a magnificent mansion in the classicist style, built in the first half of the 19th century. The building was decorated with a corner tower with half-columns, a drum and a dome, which has not survived to this day.
In 1917, a murder occurred in the building - unknown persons attacked the Commissioner of Labor and stabbed him to death. After the revolution, the building underwent reconstruction. The spacious halls were divided into small living spaces. Currently, the former mansion is also a dormitory.
Rossiya Hotel building
- Address: 1 May Street, 2.
The five-star Rossiya Hotel in the past belonged to wealthy merchant families, who resold it to each other, making changes to the appearance of the building.
Today you can see the final version of the estate, created at the end of the 19th century. It is a three-story building with two-story wings. The main mass is decorated with a pediment and columns resting on an arcade.
After the 1917 revolution, a women's shelter and boarding house was located in the former estate. Hotel Rossiya was opened in 2015.
House on Lvov street
- Address: st. Lvova, 94.
The street got its name in honor of the Deputy Commissioner of Education Lvov I.V. In 1918, the commissar was brutally killed by the White Guards. The house where the crime took place is a historical monument of the city. It is a modest building from the late 19th century.
The first floor is made of brick, the second floor is made of wood. From ancient times, platbands and pilasters with intricate handmade carvings have been preserved. A memorial plaque was installed in front of the building in memory of I.V. Lvov. The house itself is residential.
Melnitsa I.V. Merkulyeva
- Address: Krasnoarmeyskaya street, 7.
The mill building was built in 1894 by landowner Ivan Vasilyevich Merkulyev. At that time it was the largest steam mill in the area. The building is notable for its unique decor, an analogue of which is difficult to find. The end wall is decorated with figured masonry.
Instead of traditional floral and geometric ornaments, there is a whole picture of a house with an elegant gable, columns and frames of window niches. The mill is still in operation, but now with modern equipment.

Volsky temples and monasteries
Pilgrimage tourism in Volsk has developed thanks to numerous churches. Some of them were built in our time, while others are not the first generation of Volsky Christians.
Vladimir Convent
- Address: st. Proletarsky Village.
In 1858, three girls: Anna, Katerina and Daria decided to found a monastery on the edge of the Volsky forest. This was the beginning of the Vladimir convent. Initially, there were wooden cells and a small chapel on the edge of the forest.
The first abbess, Evdokia Titovna, took monastic vows after the death of her husband and began developing the young monastery. She acquired 11 acres of an orchard and a large arable field, on which in 1865 a brick church was erected in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.
Since its founding, the monastery has actively participated in the life of the city. Thus, during the First World War, the monastery provided financial support to families left without breadwinners. Five orphaned children also found refuge in the monastery.
In the 1930s, the monastery was closed and the temple was destroyed. For several years the community continued to exist, masquerading as an agricultural artel. When the Bolsheviks learned of the underground activities, the nuns were arrested and exiled to Siberia.
The monastery was rebuilt in 2015. The building is made in the style of Russian architecture. The main entrance is decorated with a massive rotunda porch. Whitewashed platbands, garlands, panels and pilasters stand out on the red-brick facades. The temple and bell tower are covered with tents with domes. The original church looked almost the same, with minimal changes. The monastery is currently operating.
Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God
- Address: Krasnooktyabrskaya street, 32B.
The Kazan Church is an example of modern wooden architecture. It was built from logs in 2005. The main building is crowned with a white stone drum with a golden dome. Adjacent to the refectory is a two-tier hipped bell tower.
The end of the rectangular apse is decorated with a copy of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The log church is located in a park area and is in perfect harmony with aspen groves.
Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
- Address: Yaroslavskaya street.
A small temple is located on the territory of the Cadet Corps. The military school building was built in 1859. The educational course included such subjects as the Law of God and Old Slavonic calligraphy, so the architectural ensemble of the building was complemented by the Orthodox Church.
In 1870, a monastic brotherhood was created at the temple, designed to instill moral and spiritual values in the cadets. The wooden church expanded over time. By 1912, it had become a vast, multifunctional complex with residential cells and its own library.
The cadet school was abolished in 1918. Church property was divided between churches in the Volsk region, and the church itself was destroyed a couple of years later.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a branch of the Military Academy of Logistics and Transport was created on the site of the Cadet Corps. In 2005, a new brick temple in the style of Russian architecture was erected on its territory.
Temple of the Holy Martyr Herman - Bishop of Volsk
- Address: st. Volgogradskaya, 52B.
German Kosolapov was one of the first Orthodox ministers repressed and executed for their faith during the Bolshevik terror. In 1918, he became the new bishop of the Volsk See.
That same year, German was arrested on charges of inciting protests against Soviet power. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, in 1919, a new trial took place, during which the bishop was sentenced to death.
There is a legend that before the execution, the bishop performed a service in the cell, performing a funeral service for himself. He was executed at the Saratov Resurrection Cemetery.
Soon after the death of the bishop, his veneration as a saint began. A worship cross made of rails was placed on the grave.
In 2013, construction of a temple in honor of the martyr began in Volsk. The brick cross-domed church is made in the Russian-Byzantine style. A memorial cross was erected on its territory in honor of Bishop Herman.
Bishop's House and Annunciation Church
- Address: Lenin street, 100.
Since its foundation at the beginning of the 19th century, the bishop's house has been the most beautiful building in Volsk. The main decoration of the house in the classicist style is a protruding portico with a colonnade, which rests on a high base. Between the columns there is a snow-white balustrade. The building has geometrically regular shapes, and the decorative elements are distinguished by strict elegance.
In 1908, the architectural composition was supplemented by the Church of the Annunciation. Domes and tents rose above the roof of the building. The church was built at the expense of Volya merchants.
In 1929, the Church of the Annunciation was closed, and first a labor exchange, then a canteen and a dormitory were opened in the main building. Today the bishop's house and church have been restored. Services are held in the church, and Sunday school classes are held in the house.
Historical memorials and monuments of Volsk
Tourists should not pass by the monuments installed in the public gardens of Volsk. These compositions will tell you a lot of interesting things about the history of the city.
Memorial complex "Eternal Flame"
- Address: pl. 10th anniversary of October.
The main war memorial is located on the square of the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution. The complex includes the following objects:
- Three plates with the names of Volchan soldiers who fell on the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War. Among them are seven Heroes of the Soviet Union. The Eternal Flame is lit at the foot of the slabs.
- Stone wall with a bas-relief portrait of a soldier and an image of a hand clutching a sword.
The monuments were created according to the design of the artist N.V. Savelyev in 1975. The grand opening took place on May 9, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Victory.
In the early 2000s, the complex underwent renovation work, during which the inscription on the stone wall dedicating the memorial to the Volchan soldiers was replaced with another - “To the Soldiers of the Motherland 1941-1945.” This replacement caused a wave of indignation among the townspeople. In addition, the soldier’s face was painted over with black paint, which also caused dissatisfaction.
In 2015, the complex was returned to its original appearance. Today it is a military-patriotic property of Volsk and the site of annual rallies.
Monument to Border Guards
- Address: Central Square.
In May 2022, a monument was inaugurated in the center of Volsk, representing a border pillar with the coats of arms of the Russian Federation and the USSR. The memorial is dedicated to all Volchan border guards who gave their lives on the battlefields of the Second World War or in hospitals from wounds received in battle.
The opening ceremony was attended by border guards who came from the cities and villages of the Volsky region, as well as from the Saratov region.
Monument to the sailors of the Volga Flotilla
- Address: st. Stepan Razin.
The monument was erected on the banks of the Volga in 1976. The location for the memorial was not chosen by chance - it was in this place that the sailors who arrived in Volsk to participate in the revolutionary battles landed in 1918. The result of protracted battles was the ousting of counter-revolutionaries from the city. More than 700 Red Army soldiers were rescued from prison by their comrades.
The monument is a stone statue of a fighter who is eager to fight. The granite pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs of sea anchors.
Obelisk to soldiers who died in the civil war
- Address: pl. 10th anniversary of October.
On the Square of the 10th Anniversary of the October Revolution stands the oldest monument of Volsk. This is a white stone obelisk on the mass grave of two soldiers who died in the battles of the civil war: Sergei Korzhevin and Ivan Semenov.
The obelisk is made in the form of a white stone tombstone with an insert of black tiles. The four corners of the memorial are decorated with cast iron spheres resembling cannonballs. The monument was erected in 1918 shortly after the funeral of the heroes.
Monument to P.D. Grushin
- Address: Maxim Gorky Street.
Pyotr Dmitrievich Grushin is a designer of anti-aircraft missiles who lived in Volsk for a long time. His main merit is that he proved the possibility of detecting and destroying enemy reconnaissance aircraft.
In 1985, a bronze bust of P.D. was unveiled in Volsk. Grushin. The memorial plaque lists all the designer's awards, including two Orders of the Hero of Socialist Labor.
Monument to the first constitution of the RSFSR
- Address: 10th Anniversary of October Square, 4/1.
In 1918, the first constitution of the RSFSR was adopted. A couple of years later, the Volsk administration decided to commemorate this event by erecting a monument.
A competition was announced for the best design of the future monument. The victory was won by the sculptor A. Kobelev. He conceived a complex architectural structure, but due to a limited budget he had to settle for a simple obelisk, shaped like a tribune.
In the 1960s, construction of the Drama Theater began in the park where the monument stood, so it was moved to Dzerzhinsky Street, where the obelisk is located to this day.

City Park

Volsky City Park was founded by merchant Pyotr Sapozhnikov in 1793. Over the centuries of its existence, the park has repeatedly changed its appearance and expanded its boundaries. During the last restoration, which took place in 2022, children's attractions were opened in the park: “The Jolly Train,” trampolines and various carousels.
For the entertainment of adult visitors, a football field and a shooting range were built here. The park is decorated with a large fountain and various art objects. The Eiffel Tower, covered with ivy, is especially popular among fans of photo shoots.
Volga embankment
- Address: emb. them. Zlobina.
A small walking trail stretches along the right bank of the Volga. It is separated from the river by a wrought-iron fence and an even row of leafy alleys. You can go down to the water using a special deck. Recently, an observation deck was opened on the embankment, allowing you to admire the river and coastal attractions.
Thanks to asphalt paths, comfortable benches and night lighting, the embankment is comfortable for walking and cycling.
