Where to relax in the Saratov region. Petrovsky district

The settlement has existed as a city since 1780. It is located on the Medveditsa River, the distance to the regional center is 104 km. The Atkarsk-Sennaya branch of the Privlzhsky railway runs here, and the Saratov-Penza regional highway passes through the settlement. Already 12 km from Petrovsk there is the border of the Penza region.

About the city of Petrovsk

Petrovsk is located on the banks of the river, on the Volga Upland, which provides a good wind rose and a relatively mild climate. It is connected to the regional center and Penza by rail and bus service; the former military airfield is now abandoned.

The station is named Petrovsk-Saratovsky to distinguish it from cities with the same name located in other regions of Russia.

The history of the city reflects the history of the region, its difficult development on the border of the Wild Field. Previously, this area was often subject to raids by the Crimean Tatars, and in 1698 Peter the Great issued a decree on the founding of a fortified city, whose task was to protect the surrounding villages and lands.

The city grew as a merchant city, and the interest of the townspeople was that dashing people, robbers did not come here and did not cause destruction. According to one legend, the emperor personally visited the settlement he created in 1707. The main purpose of building the fortress was to protect the busy trade route, the highway that led from Tsaritsyn to Moscow.

Trade convoys often suffered from attacks by bands of free people, the Kuban Cossacks, who settled in abundance along the wild banks of the Bear. A fortified line of defense extended directly from Petrovsk. The construction of the fortress was supervised by Peter's favorite, Boris Golitsyn.

The fortress was built in the shape of a quadrangle, surrounded by strong double wooden walls, built from durable oak. Protection was guaranteed by bunks, ushkets and arquebuses, located on 8 towers covered with planks.

Inside the fortress there was the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the governor’s mansion, an archive, merchants’ houses, outbuildings, barns and stables. On the right bank of the Bear there was a settlement with houses of service people; it was protected by a tyn.

In the 19th century, with the beginning of the era of industrial development, brick factories began to be built in Petrovsk, and a brewery began to operate. The fact that the city was located on a busy road contributed to the development of trade.

There were 4 fairs here: Preobrazhenskaya, Tikhvinskaya, Krestovozdvizhenskaya, Kazanskaya, each on its own day. Merchants built several steam mills that turned rye grown on the arable land surrounding the city into flour.

The city developed and required skilled workers. Parish and zemstvo schools were opened here, real schools trained specialists, and spiritual schools trained clergy.

In calmer times, in 1780, Petrovsk became an ordinary district town in the Saratov province. During Soviet times, the city managed to be part of the later abolished Lower Volga region, after which, in 1936, it became part of the Saratov region.

Attractions

The city is not replete with architectural attractions, since the vast majority of buildings are low-rise, from Soviet times. Pre-revolutionary buildings include a railway station, a fire department, a House of Culture, and the Petrovsk administration building. By the beginning of the 20th century. include hospital and bank buildings.

The main monument is the sculpture of Peter I, which adorns the station square. There are quite a lot of Soviet monuments and memorials dedicated to those who died in the Second World War, the Afghan War, and the Chernobyl accident. The Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God, built at the end of the 19th century, deserve attention.

Coat of arms of Petrovsk

The coat of arms of Petrovsk was created taking into account the main values for its residents. It was not created anew, but was given to its residents along with the history of the locality. It belongs to the vowel category, which means that one of its elements directly matches the name of the city.

In the upper half is the coat of arms of the Saratov governorship, three silver sterlets, in the lower half is a hand emanating from a cloud, in a red field, holding two keys. The hand belongs to the Apostle Peter and emphasizes the importance of the city as a castle, locking the area from robbers.

The name of St. Peter recalls the founding emperor of the city. In an unapproved version, the coat of arms was supposed to be surrounded by golden ears of corn, which emphasized the importance of the area as a granary.
