Vladimir in winter is a popular tourist destination for 1–2 days. The ancient city looks especially atmospheric in the winter months: snow-covered wooden huts, central streets in festive illumination, craft fairs in the squares. During this period, Vladimir appears in a new light - even if you have already been here in the warm season, the city has something to surprise you!
The city of Vladimir in winter is perfect for both cultural and educational trips and active recreation. The weather in winter is quite mild. In the coldest months, January and February, the thermometer rarely drops below -10-15 degrees. The first snow falls in November, but permanent snow cover is usually established by December. The best period for tourist trips is considered to be the end of December and the beginning of January - at this time the city is decorated for the New Year, various festivals and fairs are held.

Sights of Vladimir in winter
Since daylight hours are very short in the winter months, it’s worth starting your acquaintance with winter Vladimir with its architecture. The city's historical monuments are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List - some of them date back to the pre-Mongol period of Rus'. Most of the tourist sites are concentrated in one district of Vladimir, Oktyabrsky. The walk won’t take much time, especially since in winter it’s so nice to take breaks to warm up in a cafe.
Assumption Cathedral
The Vladimir Cathedral is one of the most outstanding monuments of Russian white-stone architecture of the pre-Mongol period. The cathedral was erected in 1158 by decree of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. It was this cathedral that later served as the prototype for the Assumption Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin . Fragments of frescoes by Andrei Rublev have been preserved inside the temple. Now the Assumption Cathedral of Vladimir is an active temple and museum object - you can visit it both during services and with an excursion group.

Dmitrievsky Cathedral
Another monument of the pre-Mongol period is the Dmitrievsky Cathedral of Vladimir, also built in the 12th century. The temple was founded by Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest at the princely court. Together with the Assumption Cathedral, Dmitrievsky is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The miniature, neat temple is notable for the carvings on the outside of the walls. The white stone walls are decorated with 600 bas-reliefs - most of the bas-reliefs are original. They depict historical and mythological scenes with animals: from galloping horsemen and exorcisms to Hercules fighting a lion.

Temples and monasteries of Vladimir
Walking around the city, you will constantly come across striking examples of temple architecture from different centuries. It is worth including in your route through winter Vladimir: the Catholic Church of the Holy Rosary , built in the red-brick neo-Gothic style; Nikitskaya Church in the provincial baroque style; Trinity Old Believer Church with an exhibition dedicated to the crafts of the Vladimir region.
The oldest holy monasteries on Vladimir land date back to the 12th century. In the center of the city is the Mother of God Nativity Monastery (founded at the end of the 12th century), which in the Middle Ages was the center of monastic life in the region. A 10-minute walk from the Golden Gate is the Dormition Princess Monastery, founded at the turn of the 12th–13th centuries. Bogolyubsky Monastery , located a 20-minute drive from Vladimir, is notable for its cathedral in honor of the Bogolyubskaya Icon of the Mother of God with sky-blue domes. Nearby is one of the most beautiful churches in Russia - the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl .

Golden Gate
The ceremonial entry into the city was formalized in 1164. The Golden Gate with the gate church is the only gate of the pre-Mongol period that has survived in Vladimir to this day. But the Golden Gate acquired its modern appearance over time: the wide passage arch (original height - 14 meters) and the battle platform above the side pylons have been preserved since the 12th century. The gate church is not in use now - inside there is an exhibition dedicated to the defense of the city during the invasion of the Tatar-Mongol yoke.

Shopping arcades
In addition to the monuments of Medieval Rus', Vladimir has many remarkable buildings from the 18th to early 20th centuries. The shopping arcades were built at the end of the 18th century, similar to Gostiny Dvor in St. Petersburg. The buildings were rebuilt and supplemented several times. So, in the 19th century there were Big and Small shopping arcades in the city. But, in the post-revolutionary years, most of the buildings were lost: the back part of the Large Rows was demolished and the Small Rows were completely destroyed. But the southern part has been preserved. Now there is a shopping complex inside.
Monuments of Vladimir
The main city monument is a sculpture dedicated to Prince Vladimir, located on the observation deck in front of the Assumption Cathedral. Nearby, in the Pushkin Park , there are 2 more interesting monuments: to Andrei Rublev, depicting an icon painter at work; “850 Years of Vladimir” is a Soviet monument that personifies the past and present of the city. On Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street there is a monument to another prince - Alexander Nevsky. For photographs with funny sculptures, you should go along Kozlov Val Street to the entrance to the Patriarchal Garden . There is a sculpture dedicated to the Vladimir cherry tree and a monument to the Scientist Cat.

Dmitrievsky Cathedral
Another masterpiece of Russian architecture was erected in Vladimir by Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest. And the prince dedicated this magnificent temple to the martyr Dmitry of Thessalonica.
The Principality of Vladimir was experiencing its heyday, and the temple was supposed to emphasize the power and strength of Vladimir. But its relatively small size is explained by the fact that it was a family, so to speak, house church of a large princely family.
Among similar religious buildings, Dmitrievsky Cathedral stands out for its unique and inimitable stone carvings.
Museums
Since winter weather is not always conducive to long walks, tourist routes around Vladimir always include museums. Most of them are located in the historical center of the city, between important architectural sites. About the city
Vladimir is a modern, beautiful city with a lot of green spaces. Included in the list of cities of the Golden Ring of Russia. A city with a long history (more than 900 years, older than Moscow), the former capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality, which became the prototype of the future Russian state. In the Middle Ages, Vladimir became a provincial city, a cultural center that attracted creative people of that period. During the Soviet period of history, the city lost somewhat in terms of cultural development, the number of religious sites decreased significantly, but at the same time Vladimir took a big step forward in terms of scientific, technical, and industrial development.
The city can be very interesting for those interested in history, for tourists who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the capital and big cities.
Vladimir is located at the intersection of railways and highways, therefore, from the point of view of convenient transport logistics, the city is attractive both for organized tourist groups and for individual guests.

Ferris wheel "Sky 33"
The main tourist “pearl” of Vladimir’s Central Park appeared in 2015, causing a great stir in the city and its surroundings. Thousands of people wanted to ride the 50-meter Ferris wheel and see the city from a bird's eye view. The new design turned out to be the only one in the area in terms of dimensions, so the flow of people wanting to ride has not dried up to this day. The 15-minute journey allows you to enjoy a complete panorama of the surrounding area: the wheel is positioned in such a way that people sitting in the cabins can see all areas perfectly. In total, the attraction contains 32 cabins and can accommodate 192 visitors.
Mother of God Nativity Monastery
This monastery played a significant role in ancient Russian history. It was built by Vsevolod the Big Nest in 1191, and since then this structure has seen many large-scale upheavals and changes. In addition to the prominent political figures who visited here, the monastery is famous for the fact that it was here that the body of Alexander Nevsky was buried. During the Soviet period, the monastery was used by security officers, which gave it the bad reputation of bloody repressions. Today there is a newly functioning monastery here, which plays an important role in the Russian Orthodox Church system.
Water tower
The Vladimir water tower is a very interesting structure, which was created by the architect S. M. Zharov in 1912. However, the real history of this structure begins in the 60s of the 19th century, when the authorities implemented the construction of the first reservoir. After 50 years, the tower was moved and built in a new location, where it was used until 1950. After that, the tower was recognized as an architectural monument, and a museum exhibition of more than 800 exhibits dedicated to the past of the city was placed in it. The tower also contains a large spiral staircase and an observation deck.
