Ak-Dovurak
- a city in Tuva, Russian Federation, a city of republican subordination, forms the city district of the same name.
Name
The name of the city is translated from Tuvan as “white land”. It is associated with an asbestos deposit, which is described in a Tuvan legend: “In time immemorial, kind and brave people lived here, they raised and grazed cattle. But one day they were attacked by cruel warriors. For three days and three nights, brave people fought with the enemy until the last warrior fell. The cruel khan ordered the surviving old men, widows and children to be burned on a high mountain peak. The earth turned black from grief, and the heart of the good people turned into an eternal stone - asbestos."
.
Ak-Dovurak
“Ak-Dovurak” is translated from the Tuvan language as “White Land”. The indigenous inhabitants of these places called magnesite, which is a companion of asbestos, so deposits of this mineral came out near Mount Kara-Dash (Black Stone). The legend of asbestos
A legend has been preserved that a long time ago, hardworking and peaceful people lived on the site of modern Ak-Dovurak. But conquerors came from the south. By order of the cruel khan, his warriors drove the prisoners to an ancient mountain and burned them all. The fire was so strong that even the rocks turned black from grief. However, the heart of the proud people turned out to be fireproof; it turned into the eternal mineral asbestos.
Combine "Tuvaasbest"
The real history of the Ak-Dovurak deposit begins at the end of the 19th century, when asbestos was accidentally discovered near the rocky Kara-Dash mountain by Russian peasant settlers Khoprov and Konov, to which the glory of a magical, fairy-tale stone has been established since ancient times. Private claims to Tuvan asbestos were interrupted by the October Revolution of 1917, and the Tuvan People's Republic was created (since 1944, within the USSR as the Tuvan Autonomous Region). The young Soviet government organized exploration work on the territory of the Ak-Dovurak asbestos deposit. In the early 1930s. High quality chrysotile asbestos was discovered here. This is how the history of Tuvan asbestos began.
20 years later, in the 1950s. It was decided to build a large Tuvaasbest plant for the extraction and processing of chrysotile asbestos. For this purpose, a workers' settlement was founded in 1958. In 1959, construction of the plant began; the population of the village at that time reached 2,200 people. In the same year, a diesel power plant was put into operation to illuminate the regional center - the village of Kyzyl-Mazhalyk, and the construction site for the future plant and construction camp was prepared. In 1961, workers began construction of the Abaza – Ak-Dovurak highway and a thermal power plant based on a diesel one.
On October 3, 1963, the first two boiler units of the thermal power plant and turbogenerators with a capacity of 2,500 kW were installed and put into operation. In the same year, an open pit mine and a water pipeline to the thermal power plant from the Khemchik River were put into operation. In 1964, the first stage of the Tuvaasbest plant was put into operation, and the processing plant began operating.
Ak-Dovurak with city status
1964 becomes a landmark year - the working village of Ak-Dovurak received the status of a city of regional subordination as part of the Barun-Khemchik district.
In 1965, pits were prepared for the construction of the main building of the 2nd stage of the Tuvaasbest plant. In accordance with the order of the Chairman of the district executive committee dated November 15, 1965, the first school was opened in the city. The first residential multi-storey buildings in the village of Permanent were put into operation. The first ten kilometers of streets in the young city are covered with asphalt. On December 25, 1966, Ak-Dovurak GPTU-3 (today it is the Mining College) was opened to train industrial equipment mechanics, electrical mechanics, carpenters, concrete workers, plasterers, painters, the first intake was 120 students. In 1967, a hospital campus was put into operation in the city.
In 1968, the construction of the Abaza – Ak-Dovurak highway was completed, and on March 13, 1969, a “red convoy” with asbestos was sent along it. In 1970, the construction of a 220 volt power line was completed from Abaza to Ak-Dovurak. In March 1971, a new crushing and screening complex with a capacity of 5,500 thousand tons of ore per year began operating at the processing plant. In 1970, the city's population reached 9.6 thousand people.
In 1976, the city of Ak-Dovurak was awarded the Red Banner of the CPSU Central Committee, the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions and the Komsomol Central Committee. In the same year, on April 22, the 2nd stage of the plant was put into operation, and on June 9, the Tuvaasbest asbestos plant was named after V.I. Lenin. In February 1982, the sports complex, equipped with the first swimming pool in the republic, opened its doors. 1984 in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Tuvaasbest plant named after. IN AND. Lenin was given the anniversary Red Banner of the regional committee of the CPSU of the Tuvan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 1989, the population of Ak-Dovurak reached its maximum - 15.1 thousand people. The years of perestroika became a difficult test for the city, in the early 1990s. The Tuvaasbest plant was stopped. In 1995, there was a major accident at a thermal power plant, leaving the entire city without heat. The whole republic saved him. Thanks to the efforts of the Government of the Republic and the support of visiting specialists from Irkutsk, Moscow, Krasnoyarsk, the enterprise was gradually returned to normal operation.
During the Soviet years, the enrichment plant included a crushing and screening complex, two enrichment shops and auxiliary units. Today, work is carried out in only one workshop; the most powerful, twelve-story workshop was stopped long ago; for almost twenty years, its internal structures were taken away for scrap metal. All that was left of it was an empty huge building that cannot be restored.

Economy
The Tyvaasbest plant is a city-forming enterprise of the city. The city arose simultaneously with the emergence of the plant in 1964. The plant produces long-fiber asbestos (there are no analogous grades in Russia), slate and some other goods. After the collapse of the USSR in the 90s, the plant actually stopped and, having changed several private owners, has recently been slowly increasing its production thanks to the constant participation of the government of the republic. Asbestos is mined at a quarry located north of the city. Also in the city is the second largest fuel and energy enterprise of the republic - Ak-Dovurakskaya CHPP.

Excerpt characterizing Ak-Dovurak
- Well, don't you hear? – After waiting quite a long time for an answer, Rostov asked again. “Who knows, your honor,” the hussar answered reluctantly. - Should there be an enemy in the area? - Rostov repeated again. “It may be him, or it may be so,” said the hussar, “it’s a night thing.” Well! shawls! - he shouted at his horse, moving under him. Rostov's horse was also in a hurry, kicking the frozen ground, listening to the sounds and looking closely at the lights. The screams of voices grew stronger and stronger and merged into a general roar that could only be produced by an army of several thousand. The fires spread more and more, probably along the line of the French camp. Rostov no longer wanted to sleep. The cheerful, triumphant cries from the enemy army had an exciting effect on him: Vive l'empereur, l'empereur! [Long live the Emperor, Emperor!] was now clearly heard by Rostov. - It’s not far, it must be beyond the stream? - he said to the hussar standing next to him. The hussar only sighed, without answering, and cleared his throat angrily. Along the line of hussars the tramp of a horse riding at a trot was heard, and from the night fog the figure of a hussar non-commissioned officer suddenly appeared, appearing like a huge elephant. - Your honor, generals! - said the non-commissioned officer, approaching Rostov. Rostov, continuing to look back at the lights and shouts, rode with the non-commissioned officer towards several horsemen riding along the line. One was on a white horse. Prince Bagration with Prince Dolgorukov and his adjutants went to see the strange phenomenon of lights and screams in the enemy army. Rostov, having approached Bagration, reported to him and joined the adjutants, listening to what the generals were saying. “Believe me,” said Prince Dolgorukov, turning to Bagration, “that this is nothing more than a trick: he retreated and ordered the rearguard to light fires and make noise in order to deceive us.” “Hardly,” said Bagration, “I saw them on that hill in the evening; If they left, they left there. Mr. Officer,” Prince Bagration turned to Rostov, “are his flankers still standing there?” “We’ve been standing there since the evening, but now I don’t know, your Excellency.” Order, I will go with the hussars,” said Rostov. Bagration stopped and, without answering, tried to make out Rostov’s face in the fog. “Well, look,” he said, after a short silence. - I’m listening s. Rostov gave spurs to his horse, called out to non-commissioned officer Fedchenka and two more hussars, ordered them to follow him and trotted down the hill towards the continued screams. It was both scary and fun for Rostov to travel alone with three hussars there, into this mysterious and dangerous foggy distance, where no one had been before. Bagration shouted to him from the mountain so that he should not go further than the stream, but Rostov pretended as if he had not heard his words, and, without stopping, rode further and further, constantly being deceived, mistaking bushes for trees and potholes for people and constantly explaining his deceptions. Trotting down the mountain, he no longer saw either ours or the enemy’s fires, but heard the cries of the French louder and more clearly. In the hollow he saw in front of him something like a river, but when he reached it, he recognized the road he had passed. Having ridden out onto the road, he held his horse back, undecided: to ride along it, or to cross it and ride uphill through a black field. It was safer to drive along the road that became lighter in the fog, because it was easier to see people. “Follow me,” he said, crossed the road and began to gallop up the mountain, to the place where the French picket had been stationed since the evening. - Your Honor, here he is! - one of the hussars said from behind. And before Rostov had time to see something suddenly blackened in the fog, a light flashed, a shot clicked, and the bullet, as if complaining about something, buzzed high in the fog and flew out of earshot. The other gun did not fire, but a light flashed on the shelf. Rostov turned his horse and galloped back. Four more shots rang out at different intervals, and bullets sang in different tones somewhere in the fog. Rostov reined in his horse, which was as cheerful as he was from the shots, and rode at a walk. “Well then, well again!” some cheerful voice spoke in his soul. But there were no more shots. Just approaching Bagration, Rostov again put his horse into a gallop and, holding his hand at the visor, rode up to him. Dolgorukov still insisted on his opinion that the French had retreated and only set up the fires to deceive us. – What does this prove? - he said as Rostov drove up to them. “They could have retreated and left the pickets.” “Apparently, not everyone has left yet, prince,” said Bagration. – Until tomorrow morning, tomorrow we’ll find out everything. “There’s a picket on the mountain, your Excellency, still in the same place where it was in the evening,” Rostov reported, bending forward, holding his hand to the visor and unable to contain the smile of amusement caused in him by his trip and, most importantly, by the sounds of bullets. “Okay, okay,” said Bagration, “thank you, Mr. Officer.” “Your Excellency,” said Rostov, “allow me to ask you.” - What's happened? “Tomorrow our squadron is assigned to reserves; Let me ask you to second me to the 1st squadron. - What's your last name? - Count Rostov. - Oh good. Remain with me as an orderly. – Ilya Andreich’s son? - said Dolgorukov. But Rostov did not answer him. - So I will hope, Your Excellency.
