Thanks to the opening of new factories and the development of shipping companies, the population increased rapidly over the next 50 years. • With the advent of the railway in the Altai region in 1915, the popularity of river transport decreased again. Only after the 50s of the twentieth century did this industry begin to revive again.

Barnaul River Station

Address: pl. Bavarina V.N., 8 Phone:

Decorates the city center and the banks of the Ob River. Until the mid-19th century, the passage of boats and large vessels along the Ob River through Barnaul was not frequent. But with the advent of steamships from the Tomsk merchant Khaminov and the steamboatmen Funk and Shcherbakov, shipping traffic became more active. In 1885, after the opening of the Yekaterinburg-Tyumen railway, a high-quality rail and water connection was established between the Urals and Siberia, carrying passengers and delivering industrial goods.

The modern station building was built in 1985, its walls in white and blue tones exquisitely harmonize with the color of the water, which allows you to take beautiful portrait photographs there. Nowadays, steamboats mooring at the Barnaul river station make pleasure trips along the banks of the Ob River and carry passengers within the city.

House under the spire

Address: Lenin Ave., 82

After his image graced the cover of a set of postcards with views of Barnaul, released in a circulation of 1.2 million copies, the House under the Spire gradually turned into the official symbol of the city.

Its building on October Square in the style of Soviet neoclassicism was erected in 1956 and decorated with decorative stone trim interspersed with mica. A sharp spire 15 meters high crowns the clock tower. The height of the house including the spire is 46 meters.

The first floor of the house is occupied by a store, which, naturally, is called “Deli under the Spire”; the apartments on the next floors have a prestigious, improved layout. In Soviet times, they were occupied by heroes of the Second World War and labor, outstanding cultural figures.

The current state of the building cannot be called beautiful, but it is impossible to pass by it indifferently - a symbol is a symbol.

Architectural monuments of Barnaul

The main attractions of the city date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. They create a picturesque portrait of the city, being its decoration and guardians of history.

House under the spire

The visiting card of the city of Barnaul, decorating advertising brochures, postcards and guidebooks, is called the House with a Spire, built in 1956, in the architecture of Soviet neoclassicism.

The building, 31 meters high, is topped with a tower on which the clock shows the exact time. A 15-meter sharp spire with a weather vane shoots upward from the tower. Unfortunately, now it does not show the direction of the wind due to the wear and tear of the rotation mechanism. The external walls of the house are decorated with original decorative plaster made of stone with the addition of mica. The famous house stands on Lenin Avenue.

Museum "City"

At the corner of Lenin Avenue and Tolstoy Street, you will involuntarily stop in front of a beautiful old building with amazing decoration, appearing in an abundance of small figures of different shapes. This is the former city hall, built in 1914-1916. Its facade is decorated in a contrast of white and red, using whitewash on brick in individual decorative elements. The structure is topped with a cone-shaped dome, characteristic of the architecture of that time.

Since 2007, the former town hall has housed a city museum, a visit to which will be useful for children and adults. Here, the history is presented in various exhibits and documents, starting from the mining village founded by the industrialist Akinfiy Demidov, to the merchant city, and further to the large industrial and cultural center of the region.

Theological school

The two-story stone building of the Theological School, located on Lenin Avenue, is a landmark of the late 19th century.

The building was erected in 1869 in the style of classical religious architecture. After a fire in 1917, it was reconstructed, after which the original appearance was significantly changed by combining different architectural styles. The facades of the school are designed in the traditions of Russian church architecture of the 18th century with pseudo-baroque decor and appear before us as they were 100 years ago.

Shadrin merchant house

On Krasnoarmeysky Prospekt, a wooden building of the 19th century, built in the Art Nouveau style, attracts attention - the Shadrin merchant house.

Among the surrounding buildings, it stands out for its skillful façade with graceful fences on the loggias and patterned carvings of the window casings. The 2nd floor loggia ends with a tower with two tiers, ending with a tent with a lantern and a decorative trefoil. During Soviet times, the merchant's mansion was occupied by an orphanage, and now it houses the Russian Tea cafe. This fabulous-looking house is included in the list of architectural monuments of federal significance.

"Barnaul skyscraper"

In 1915, on Kuznetskaya Street (now Gogol Street) the first Barnaul “skyscraper” appeared - this is how amazed residents called the house built by merchants D. Aleinikov and N. Averin, which became the first “high-rise” of Barnaul. It is a four-story and five-story building connected by a passage. The houses are built of red brick in architecture close to the Renaissance. The facades do not have clear floor markings, but each floor is distinguished by individual decoration and openings that stand out in white on a red background.

House of Polyakov - Yakovlev

The most architecturally valuable of the Barnaul merchant mansions is the corner building at the intersection of Gorky-Korolenko streets, which has survived unchanged from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.

It was built in Art Nouveau style with baroque details in the external decor. The design of the facade, made in the contrast of white and red, is admirable. The presence of arched and round windows, protruding architectural forms on the facade and chains supporting the canopy, forged fences, as well as artistically crafted balcony railings and window grilles give the house an extraordinary charm.

Intercession Cathedral

The Intercession Cathedral is the oldest Orthodox church in Barnaul. It was built in 1869 in the style of ancient Byzantine architecture. A few years after the revolution, the church was closed by the authorities. Its activities were restored by decree of Stalin in 1942. At the end of the 90s of the last century, the cathedral underwent reconstruction and acquired four thrones.

Inside the temple there are interesting oil paintings on the walls, copying biblical scenes painted by Russian artists. The temple rises on Nikitina Street, 137.

St. Nicholas Regimental Church

St. Nicholas Regimental Church was erected at the beginning of the 19th century according to the design of military churches, as a single-nave rectangular structure with a bell tower in 3 tiers and a portal in the western part of the facade. The temple was crowned with a dome with a cross. In 1930, it was closed and beheaded, organizing a club in the building for a military unit, and later for a flight school.

In 2001, the church building was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, and it acquired a new look and new life. The dome and crosses were restored. A new shiny gold dome, weighing three tons, was installed in the old place. Barnaul craftsmen made 5 crosses. The main cross was installed on the central dome, the other two on each side of the church. Services are now held in the church. It can be seen on the central avenue.

News

In almost every corner of the Altai Territory you can find different monuments. Each is interesting in its own way, but it’s impossible to visit everything, so we suggest focusing on the 10 most memorable, in our opinion.

1. The “Zero Kilometer” stele is located in the center of Barnaul. This is the starting point for road distances in the region. A granite pillar about 6.5 meters high is topped with a stone vase made at the Kolyvan stone-cutting plant. Around the monument there is a wind rose with 12 zodiac signs. It is believed that if you stand on your zodiac sign, make a wish and throw a coin into a vase, it will definitely come true.

2. In Barnaul it is also worth visiting, erected on May 9, 1971 in memory of the residents of the Altai Territory who went to the front. The memorial is located on Station Square and consists of four memorial structures. On the first line there is a sculpture “Farewell” in the form of a woman escorting her son to the front and a stele on a granite pedestal. The second part of the monument is a platform, on two sides of which there are slabs with soil from 13 hero cities. The main part of the Memorial looks like a torn ring of a concrete redoubt, inside which copper bas-reliefs of eight military branches are fixed and the names of the soldiers who did not return from the front are listed. An eternal flame burns in front of each bas-relief. Another element of the Memorial complex is the Monument from grateful descendants, which was erected in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Victory, adding the names of full holders of the Order of Glory and Heroes of the Soviet Union.

A monument to the famous inventor Ivan Polzunov

was erected near the Altai State Technical University . He created the world's first steam engine. The bronze figure of the inventor is mounted on a granite pedestal, next to two cylinders - the main part of the “fire-breathing” machine. Students believe that if you rub the right shoe of the monument, you are guaranteed an A on the exam.

4. Next to the building of the Altai State Pedagogical University on Socialist Avenue there is a monument to rock singer Viktor Tsoi

. Funds for its creation were collected “from the whole world.” The idea was brought to life by the young Barnaul sculptor Sergei Kulgachev. If you love Russian rock, be sure to visit this place. In good weather, street musicians often gather here.

5. Your own “Zero Kilometer”

there is in Biysk. There is a monument there, symbolizing the beginning of the Chuysky tract. It was installed in 2013 near the Museum of the Chuisky Tract, in front of the entrance to the communal bridge over the Biya River. The monument is made in the shape of a horseshoe with a cart wheel inside. It is installed on a pedestal symbolizing the three stages of development of the Chuisky tract - the ancient path along which merchants drove trade caravans, the road along which they rode carts and the modern highway. At Kilometer Zero you should make a wish by throwing a coin over your shoulder.

6. There is also a monument to Peter I

, by whose decree this city was founded. The Emperor sits on a horse wearing a cocked hat, military uniform, boots and a wide cloak. People call the monument the “Siberian Bronze Horseman”.

7. On Mount Piket, not far from the village of Srostki, there is a monument to Vasily Shukshin, famous throughout the country, thanks to the all-Russian festival “Shukshin Days in Altai”. In 2004, this monument was presented to the small homeland of a talented writer, director and actor by Moscow sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov

. Vasily Makarovich is depicted sitting in a pose from the final scene of his film “Stoves and Benches”. And if you look at the monument from afar, it seems as if he is sitting on a mountain and contemplating the surrounding expanses. Be sure to sit down next to him and soak in the atmosphere that inspired Vasily Shukshin to create his literary and cinematic masterpieces.

8. The monument to Shukshin is not the only one in the Altai Territory that has a reference to cinema. On the territory of the Belokurikha Gornaya tourist cluster under construction, you can see the fantastic Pepelats apparatus from the film Kin-dza-dza. It’s rare that anyone drives past this art object without making the famous “Koo!”

9. Another interesting art object on the territory of Belokurikha Gornaya is the Biker Axe. The ax measuring 3x6 meters is an enlarged copy of the work of Altai sculptor Vladimir Voichishin

“Biker as an Icon”, which is exhibited in the Belokurikha “Museum of Silver”. We suggest comparing the copy and the original by visiting both cultural sites.

10. On the territory of the Turquoise Katun tourist zone you can see the world’s only marble monument to The Beatles member John Lennon. The two-meter monument is made in a surreal style and definitely deserves your attention.

Intercession Cathedral in Barnaul

Address: st. Nikitina, 137 Phone:

Built with donations from residents, it was consecrated in 1904. The wooden Church of the Intercession was replaced by a pseudo-Russian-style red brick temple.

There are four thrones in the temple:

  • Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • In the name of Prince Alexander Nevsky
  • In the name of the healer Panteleimon
  • In the name of Seraphim of Sarov

The inside of the temple is painted on dry plaster with oil paints. The basis of the painting was paintings on religious subjects by V. Vasnetsov, I. Kramskoy, M. Nesterov.

In 1939, after the demolition of the domed cross and bell tower, the cathedral premises were turned into a warehouse. Since 1943, the temple has been open to believers. Since the cathedral is the only one in the city, it was given the status of a cathedral.

Auto Theft Museum named after Ruslan Dultsev-Detochkin

Address: st. Anatolia, 130 Telephone: Opening hours: 10:00-19:00 Cost of entrance tickets: 100 rubles.

One of two museums in Russia dedicated to such a specific topic. The museum received more than one and a half hundred exhibits from the city police departments, which were stored there as material evidence. The ingenious devices of the hijackers on display can not only be viewed, but also touched. An attentive guide will certainly tell you under what circumstances the items that interested you were used, but he will never reveal to anyone the methods for their intended use. And there is something to show interest here: a plunger, a blade, pliers, wax candles, soap, fishing line and even women's nylon stockings. Noteworthy exhibits: a police motorcycle used to chase car thieves 40 years ago, a car door pierced by a bullet during a shootout of thieves and law enforcement officers, fantastically accurately forged licenses of car owners and traffic cops, license plates, sets of homemade tools for opening and starting cars. A separate part of the hall is dedicated to “traps” and “traps” that motorists set for potential car thieves. These are fishing hooks sewn onto fabric for laying out on the seat, padlocks for wheel rims, nets that entangle the gas pedal along with the foot of a stranger, but most often it was not the car thieves who got into them, but the owners of the cars themselves, who had forgotten about the “hunt” that had begun.

Soviet Square - city center

As befits the central point of the city, the Square gathered all the significant institutions of the city and region: the Administration, the University, the main post office and the Central Hotel, the most spacious in Barnaul.

Recently, a new landmark has appeared on it - the “zero kilometer”, decorated with a huge copy of the “queen of vases” - the Kolyvan vase, and which has become a reference point for all distances and roads in the Altai Territory.

What do we know about Barnaul?

Barnaul is rich in natural attractions, monuments and landmarks, temples, theaters and museums, and architectural attractions. It is not for nothing that they say that Barnaul is similar to St. Petersburg, because it was in its likeness that this city was built. Arriving in Barnaul, many people wonder where to go? Let's look at the main attractions of this city.

Lenin Avenue - a beautiful historical street

Take the time to walk along the avenue and you will see coniferous trees that are more than 200 and 300 years old, forged lanterns of non-standard sizes and shapes, the Alexander Nevsky Chapel and a modest chapel for students of the Technical University, a memorial to the memory of war victims. And the beautiful finale to the walk will be the stunning view of the Ob River from the River Station.

Installed in the Leninsky district of Barnaul - it is interesting that the sculptor of the monument, Nikolai Zvonkov, also lives here. The monument, made in collaboration with Mikhail Kulgachev, was unveiled on the writer’s 60th birthday – July 25, 1989.

The writer's facial features, posture, and even the manner of wearing a shirt were carefully reproduced from his photographs. Later, the sculpture was raised onto a granite pedestal, and a park with red viburnum and mobile benches was laid out around it for the annual Shukshin Readings.

Monument to Viktor Tsoi

Address: Socialist Ave., 126

This monument was erected in front of the building of the Pedagogical Academy on November 20, 2010. A musician with a guitar seems to grow out of a stone pedestal, and the semicircle above his head symbolizes the rise of the “Star called the Sun.”

Monument to the Unhappy Lover

Address: Socialist Ave., opposite the entrance to the Pedagogical University.

The hero in retro style is anxiously waiting: “He will come or he won’t come?” Its appearance is typical of the 70s, the time of the youth of the sculptor of the monument, Eduard Dobrovolsky. Confusion prevailing over the joy of anticipation, a simple thin tie, a seemingly absurd flower in the hand evoke sympathy among those watching. This is probably why, contrary to the author’s wishes, the bench near the monument does not often become a meeting place for lovers, but tourists come to see it with pleasure.
