The institution, founded in 1929, is one of the oldest museums of local history in Siberia. Its funds contain more than 106 thousand storage units, including unique artifacts found by archaeologists during excavations in the Khakass-Minusinsk basin. The age of some exhibits is estimated at 5 thousand years. The pearl of the exhibition is considered to be a collection of ancient petroglyphs, rock paintings, and archaic stone monuments. The initiator of the creation of the Abakan art gallery was the director of the local art school F. Pronskikh. It was he who donated his collection of paintings to the institution in 1976. The gallery's collection gradually grew and now includes 2.5 thousand works by sculptors, artists, graphic artists, and masters of decorative and applied arts. Mount Kunya
From the top there is a stunning view of the Yenisei valley. The second name of the hill is Kun-Tag which means “mountain of the Sun”. Once upon a time, religious rites dedicated to the Sun God were performed on it. Kunya preserved ancient drawings, as a result of which it was recognized as a monument of primitive painting.

According to legend, the name of the Abakan River comes from the name of the hero Aba-Kan: during a flood, his horse was unable to jump over the river and threw his rider into it.
Lake Tus
200 km. from Abakan there is one of the most saline lakes in the world, the degree of mineralization of which is 275 g/l (for comparison, the degree of mineralization of the Dead Sea is 350 g/l.). The reservoir has the status of a resort of regional importance.

Kashkulakskaya Cave

Since 2005, the Transfiguration Cathedral has been the main church of the Abakan diocese. The white-stone church with seven gilded domes, an elegant bell tower, the top of which rises to 49.2 m, is one of the iconic architectural landmarks of the city. On church holidays, the ringing of the cathedral bells can be heard over Abakan. The largest of them weighs more than 5.5 tons. Under the shadow of the temple, revered Orthodox relics are kept - the image of “Consolation and Consolation”, the icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear”, consecrated on Athos.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

The oldest Orthodox church in Abakan is the cathedral, consecrated in 1864 in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. In the 20s of the last century, the temple was almost destroyed by atheist fanatics. Until 1944, its building was used for warehouse and production needs. As a result, the wooden structure fell into disrepair. To restore it, a large-scale reconstruction was required, which included replacing the log walls with brickwork. At the same time, the builders tried to preserve the exterior of the temple as accurately as possible. After restoration, the cathedral regained its original appearance.
What to see in Abakan in one day?
- We recommend starting your walking route in one day from the Abakan Zoo , it is small, spend a maximum of 2 hours. After this, we recommend heading along Sovetskaya Street towards forest areas. On the left side of the street there will be Inspiration and Victory . On the right side you can enter the Montenegrin Park .
- If you walk and don’t turn anywhere, you can get to Pervomaiskaya Square , next to it (on Pushkin Street) there is a monument to the Steam Locomotive L-3168, such steam locomotives have become the property of Siberian cities. Further along Pushkin Street we recommend getting to the Khakassian Museum of Local Lore L.R. Kyzlasova .
- On Pushkin Street you can take a minibus and move to the other side of the river across the bridge. Here we get out on Poklonnaya Hill , here we definitely visit the Memory Alley and Samokhval Park . You can climb the Mount of Love , but rather it is a small observation deck that offers an excellent view of the city, especially in the evening.

This park is the only one in Russia. It was opened in 2007 in the Preobrazhensky park complex.
Consists of 30 gardens of different themes. Trees and shrubs of fantastic shapes, copies of sculptural works by world masters brought from Spain, an English lawn, a Japanese garden, alpine slides, rare overseas plants and a copy of the Eiffel Tower.

Another landscape design park, located on the territory of the Montenegrin Park. More modest than Dream Gardens, but very cozy, more family-oriented.
