The official date of the foundation of Grozny is considered to be October 5, 1818. Then, on the instructions of General A. Ermolov, a fortress was founded in a strategically important place at the entrance to the Khankala Gorge. With the end of the Caucasian Wars, the citadel lost its defensive significance. The impetus for the further development of the village was given by the discovery of oil fields in the vicinity. Already in 1869 it received city status. With the advent of Soviet power, industry began to develop here, and in 1944 the policy became the capital of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. During the two wars that followed the collapse of the USSR, the city was almost completely destroyed. Its restoration began immediately after the end of hostilities. Today, Grozny looks great again, being the largest business, cultural and educational center in the region, ranking third among the most populated cities in the Russian Caucasus.

Ushkaloy towers (stone towers) stand on the banks of the Argun River. They were built in the 11th and 12th centuries, when they served defensive and customs functions. The towers are buildings of 4 floors, their height is 12 meters. They are located under a small rock overhang.
It seems that the towers are hiding, pressed against the rock. According to legend, this is not a customs house at all, but a tower of the sages. And any resident could turn to them in search of justice.
The place will attract the attention of both lovers of ancient architecture and connoisseurs of pristine nature. In addition, there is a comfortable tourist complex with all amenities nearby.

Lake Kazenoy-Am
Lake Kazenoy-Am
The mountain lake is located near the village of Kazenoy-Am, on the border of Chechnya and Dagestan. Apparently, it arose as a result of a mountain collapse that blocked the mouths of several rivers. TO
Azenoy-Am attracts visitors with its amazingly clear water, clean air and magnificent mountain scenery. The lake looks especially impressive on sunny days, when the water takes on a bright blue hue.
Back in Soviet times, a training base for rowers was built here. And in 2015, a whole tourist cluster was organized here - a hotel, cottages, sports grounds. An ideal place to relax away from the bustle of the city.

Day 2 – Lake Kezenoy-Am and Cheberloev Gorge
Kezenoy-Am is the highest mountain lake in Russia. The color of the water is unusually blue, bright and rich.
There are many hotels and restaurants around the lake, and various events are held on weekends. You can rent a boat for 200 rubles, ride a horse, or for extreme sports fans, ride a zipline for 1000 rubles.
There is one caveat - swimming in the lake is prohibited, but only from Chechnya. From the Dagestan side - it’s possible. However, on that side there is no infrastructure with cafes, hotels, houses and entertainment.
You can get to Kezenoy-Am from Grozny by car along the “Tsarskaya” road. Travel time is 2 hours (about 100 km). On the way to the lake, be sure (!) to make short stops to see the mosques in Argun and Shali.
The "Mother's Heart" mosque in Argun has a very unusual, futuristic design. It doesn't look like a classic mosque at all. Unfortunately, I don’t have any original photos from the trip. Google it and marvel!
The snow-white mosque “Pride of Muslims” in Shali is the largest mosque in Russia. The height of the minarets reaches 63 meters. It was officially opened in the fall of 2022. During my trip, it was unfinished.
Also not far from the lake is the Cheberloev Gorge and the village of Khoy with an interesting tower complex. You can climb one of the towers.

Day 1 — Grozny
In Grozny there are beautiful buildings that look more like palaces: the National Library, the residence of Ramzan Kadyrov, the National Theater, the Akhmat Kadyrov Museum, the “Heart of Chechnya” mosque.
View of the Heart of Chechnya mosque
You can start exploring the city at the Grozny City observation deck. It offers a 360-degree view, but you can't take pictures of everything. On the side where Ramzan Kadyrov's residence is located, photography is strictly prohibited. There are special people standing there and keeping order. If you take a photo, they will force you to delete everything.
Then we go down and see the Park of Flowers, made in the image and likeness of the park in Dubai.
In general, I noticed that many things are repeated in Grozny - a flower park, a light fountain, and even now they are building a skyscraper. According to the plan, this will be the tallest building in Russia - a competitor to the Burj Khalifa.
The next place to visit will be the “Heart of Chechnya” mosque. It vaguely resembles the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. In the evening it is beautifully illuminated. And also, please note that all the plants planted nearby bloom with white flowers.
To visit mosques, you must follow certain rules:
1. You must remove your shoes before entering.
2. Men are not allowed to enter in a short-sleeve shirt or shorts. A woman must wear clothes that cover her legs and arms, and a scarf on her head. Each mosque has public robes and scarves that you can use.
3. Men can enter the mosque, but women can only stand on a special balcony.
4. It is prohibited to speak loudly in the Mosque.
Be sure to take a walk along Akhmat Kadyrov Square, there is a selfipod there. It was the first time I saw such a curiosity. You can take a photo in front of the mosque, and then download this photo on the website. Unfortunately, it was not possible to test the technology; it was 40 degrees hot that day and the selfipod did not work.
In the afternoon you can go relax on the “Grozny Sea” - this is a whole tourist complex with entertainment. There is a water park, beaches (different for men and women) and a light and music fountain.
Near the reservoir there is a very decent hotel in Tiinala. Of course, this is not the city center, but it can be considered as a base for further travel around Chechnya.

The city of Grozny: history
Despite the fact that Grozny appeared on the map not so long ago - about 200 years ago, it has a glorious history. Its foundation is connected with the activities of the Russian general Alexei Ermolov and was caused by a number of objective reasons. The fact is that in the 19th century the Russian Empire began to actively expand its borders in the East. Despite the resistance of the Ottoman Empire, which had its own interests here, it succeeded well. Acting as a defender of those peoples who had previously been conquered by the Turks, she achieved significant results. So, in 1813, Georgia and Northern Azerbaijan joined it, but it was difficult to protect these territories from the expansion of the Porte, because they were separated from Russia by the Caucasus Mountains, which were controlled by the warlike highlanders - the so-called Chechens and residents of Mountainous Dagestan. They did not like the Russians and were more inclined to an alliance with the Ottoman Empire. The “Caucasian problem” caused a lot of trouble for the Russian emperor. To “restore order” in the East, in 1816 he sent there the talented general Alexei Ermolov. He was a pragmatic, purposeful person, and he carried out his assigned tasks regularly. The resistance of the Chechens was brutally suppressed, their villages were burned, and the conquered territories came under the control of Russian soldiers. According to Ermolov’s plans, in order to prevent further penetration of the mountaineers into these territories, on June 22, 1818, construction of a Russian fortress began near the Sunzha River, which was named very symbolically - Groznaya. In principle, it was difficult to call it a “fortress”. Wooden barracks, roofs made of reeds, small earthen ramparts - all this did not particularly frighten the Chechens, and after a couple of weeks they had a desire to test its strength. However, as it turned out, appearances were deceptive: the Highlanders received their first defeat. After this, the two peoples began to exist relatively peacefully on the same territory.
Very little time passed, and the Russian fortress turned into a huge city where crafts and trade flourished. Fairs were often held here, where residents from local villages came. In the middle of the 19th century, the first factories appeared in Grozny, and the oil industry began to develop. All this led to the fact that most highlanders stopped seeing Russians as enemies. Many of them preferred to settle here and do hard work rather than fight bloody wars.
In 1869, Grozny officially got rid of the status of an “ordinary fortress” and was recognized as the center of the Terek region. In 1898, the first railways appeared in the city, which had a beneficial effect on the development of the oil industry and trade. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the first oil refineries began to appear in Grozny, and the construction of oil pipelines began. In fact, it has turned into the largest industrial center in the Caucasus.
With the beginning of the February revolution and civil war, much has changed here. Chechens increasingly began to think about autonomy. In the period from 1918 to 1922. Grozny became the center of a fierce struggle, and in 1922 it was officially recognized as the capital of the self-proclaimed Chechen Autonomous Republic. During the Great Patriotic War, it was one of the strategically important centers for the USSR, because huge oil reserves fully provided the country with fuel. German troops - in order to weaken the position of the Soviet Union - in 1942 destroyed large factories in the city. Grozny itself was engulfed in severe fires, which were not immediately extinguished. In the post-war period, the history of the Chechen capital was eventful. The fact is that back in 1944, most of the Chechens were deported to the territory of Kazakhstan. Only in 1957 were they able to return to their homeland. But along with the “Chechen workers” came many criminals who engaged in outright robbery and robbery. As a result, relations between Russians and Caucasians became increasingly strained, which led to full-scale military action in 1994. In fact, during ten years of war, Grozny was literally wiped off the face of the earth. When everything calmed down, naturally, it was restored, but it took a lot of time to restore its former glory and all the Caucasian flavor. Now Grozny is, as it once was, a beautiful city, albeit with a mono-ethnic population, in which everyone will find something to see!

Day 3 – Argun Gorge
This is the most popular tourist place in Chechnya. There are many watchtowers, the picturesque mountain river Argun and beautiful natural landscapes. And in this area there is the Veduchi ski resort - https://veduchi-resort.ru. Give this place a whole day on your trip.
I repeat, the trip to Chechnya impressed me very much, left me with the most pleasant memories, and now I advise everyone to visit this region of Russia. Because he knows how to surprise!
In the capital of Chechnya you will not have problems with housing. There are hotels and apartments to suit every taste and budget. The most convenient way to find accommodation is on Booking, although there are many other worthy aggregator sites.
Want great service? Then you should go to the Grozny City Hotel. Modern room design, 9.3 points on Booking, 640 reviews from guests, excellent breakfast included and all this splendor in the very center of the city. The cost of a room for two adults starts from 7,500 rubles per night.
You can stay in the cozy Dona Hotel at a much more affordable price - 4,400 rubles per day (9.3 points on Booking, 216 reviews). Breakfast is also served here, and the location is within walking distance from the center.
Central City Hotel Grozny has an excellent location and price - 3900 rubles per night. Breakfast is included in the price, and the rooms are fully equipped for a comfortable stay. 9.5 points on Booking based on 416 reviews. This is a very high rating!
Two more hotels with 9+ points are not located in the very center of the city.
The five-star thelocal Hotels Grozny is located a 10-minute drive from the city's Central Mosque. Well, what can I say - everything is cool. From the design of the rooms to the spa with swimming pool. Room rates start from 5,200 rubles per night, but you will have to pay extra for breakfast separately.
The Gorodok Hotel will be convenient primarily for road travelers. The cost of the room is reasonable - 3300 rubles (breakfast included). 9.5 points on Booking based on 118 reviews.
Of course, there is accommodation in Grozny for the budget traveler. I went through the list of apartments and hostels. A night's stay costs from 400 to 2000 rubles. I would like to especially highlight the CENTR hostel in the very center of the city. A bed here will cost only 400 rubles, and what’s especially cool is that the rooms are divided into men’s and women’s.
*All prices are current as of the date of writing.
With excursions on large aggregators, everything is not very good. Tripster only shows three options. It's a shame, the region is really interesting for travel.
Click on the pictures below to see a detailed description of the excursion. I'll describe it briefly:
Grozny - history and modernity . This is a private excursion for 1-4 people for 2 hours. There are reviews on the excursion, and this is valuable.
Mountain Chechnya in 1 day is a fascinating journey with beautiful views. You can team up and book a trip for several people.
Welcome to Grozny! A completely new excursion, no reviews yet. But it lasts twice as long as the first, which means there is an opportunity to learn much more information from a local resident.
- The most comfortable and fastest way to get to Grozny from Moscow is, of course, by plane. Several airlines operate flights. The cost of a one-way ticket starts from 3,500 rubles. Click on the desired month in the table and you will see the dates with the most attractive ticket prices.
If you buy a ticket to Magas (Ingushetia), the cost can be reduced by almost half! You just need to resolve the issue of transfer to Grozny. Travel time is approximately 1.5 hours.
The most convenient way to select flight dates is on Aviasales - aviasales.ru
2. Aerophobes can get to Chechnya by rail. On odd dates train No. 382YA runs from Moscow. To be honest, the pleasure is questionable. The trip takes almost two days, and a compartment ticket costs almost as much as a plane ticket.
Park "Mother's Glory".
In 2009, a large park area called “Mother’s Glory” was opened in the city. The main purpose of the opening of this memorial was to express respect for women who survived the war years, were close to their husbands, brothers and sons , preserving traditions and taking care of their home. There are various playgrounds for children's recreation on the territory. The main attraction is the monument to a Chechen woman. The extensive green area will surprise you with its variety of plantings, bright greenery and fresh air. Five beautiful fountains were also built , which refresh and decorate the park. Some fountains are musical. The largest fountain is located in the center of the park. Guests will be impressed by the open restaurant “Family”. There is a small swimming pool for children. The attractions will also delight adults and children. There are 13 types of them.
Grozny experienced a rebirth after the war. Now it is a developing modern center of the Chechen Republic. It is called the second most beautiful city in Russia . Beautiful modern infrastructure is incredibly combined with the traditional, cultural way of life of the Chechen people. The city is filled with park areas, squares, alleys, which are pleasant to walk along, admiring its beauty.
