Located on the Prilensky plateau, on the left bank of the Lena, 840 km (by air) west of Yakutsk. Large river port. Connected by road with the city of Mirny.

Historical sketch
Founded no later than 1663 as a settlement of “industrial” people on the site of the Evenki camp Mukhtui (Mukhtukuevskaya village).
In the 1730s. To serve the 2nd Kamchatka expedition of V. Bering, the Yamskaya (postal) station Mukhtuya was opened.
In the 19th - early 20th centuries. - a place of political exile.
The city grew in connection with the discovery and development of diamond deposits in the Vilyuya basin. The village of Mukhtuya (Evenki “big water”), as the closest (280 km) Lena village to the Mir kimberlite pipe, became the base for the construction of the city of Mirny. In 1956, construction of a road began from Mukhtui to the future Mirny, and the first berths of the port were built.
Since 1957, the working village of Mukhtuya. City of Lensk since 1963. Name after the river. Lena, on which it is located.

Architecture, sights
The main streets of Lensk are lined with multi-storey buildings. On the embankment there is a square with an obelisk monument in memory of the residents of Mukhtui who died during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45.
7 km southwest of Lensk there is a karst cave with a 25-meter waterfall and a karst lake.

Economy
In addition to connections with the diamond industry and construction, Lensk has a significant forestry and timber sector and a large-panel house-building plant. Yakutalmaz also live in the city
research organization.
Lensk is connected to Mirny by road and has regular air connections to Mirny, Yakutsk, and Irkutsk from Lensk Airport. As a major port on the Lena, the city has become a transshipment point for the regional diamond industry.
Culture
The city has a branch of the Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering and representative offices of: Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management and Irkutsk State Technical University. There are six secondary schools in the city. There is a local history museum. It has six sections: ethnographic, flora and fauna, Russian life, Yakut hut, modern and numismatics. The city also has a children's art school (formerly a music school) and many dance groups. Three radio stations broadcast in Lensk: 1) STV-Radio, FM 100.4; 2) AutoRadio and Diamond Edge, FM 105.0. 3) Retro FM, FM 103.9.
In the art hall of the Central Library you can always see exhibitions of artists and photographers, both beginners and already famous ones, evenings and presentations are held. There is a literary association "Flamingo". Some Lenchan residents were even accepted into the Russian Writers' Union: Ivan Pereverzin, Nikolai Soin, Boris Lapardin and Sergei Moskvitin. Lensk is also rich in recognized artists: Lemyakin. V. D., V. Stadnik, V. Kudrin, N. Kudrina, K. Kudrina, L. Tartyeva, V. Indeev, V. Balaev, G. Ineshin.
