The Lago-Naki plateau is the main attraction of Adygea

Adygea is a part of the Krasnodar Territory, which occupies the flat and mountainous zones of the North-West Caucasus and is located in the basins of three rivers: Belaya, Kuban and Laba. This is an ancient region with almost untouched nature - there are only two cities here, and the rest of the territory is built up with small villages, where people live as they did hundreds of years ago.

The sights of Adygea are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Most of the places of interest to visit are natural monuments in mountainous regions and the banks of large rivers. Near each of them there are hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty, villages and recreation centers with developed infrastructure. Historical attractions, amusement parks and holy places are no less popular.

Rufabgo Falls

Between Kamennomostsky and Dakhovskaya

Admission is paid - 500 rubles (2019) There is an alternative free entrance You can drive up to the start of the route by car There is parking

Another very popular hiking route. There are many waterfalls on the Rufabgo stream, but you can see 4 of them along the route. The most impressive is, of course, the last one, to which there is an equipped trail, it is called “Maiden’s Braid”.

Waterfall "Maiden's Braid", Rufabgo

The route is very picturesque. The only downside worth noting is the rather expensive entrance, which is especially noticeable when visiting with a group.

There is a toilet on site and it is paid, despite the fact that you have already paid for the entrance.

A little about Adygea

Adygea
Adygea is a year-round region, a close neighbor to the Krasnodar region. There is no sea here, but the mountains and mountain rivers delight the eye, which you can study and admire for a very long time. In winter, skiers and lovers of sledding come here; hiking routes, by the way, are also available in winter: waterfalls frozen in ice, observation decks with views of the mountain ranges, and so on. Warm thermal pools are open all year round, so even in winter you can lie in the pool and catch snowflakes in your mouth.

trip to Adygea

We decided to go to Adygea for the May holidays, since 10 days are just right for driving so far from Moscow by car. Spring in Adygea is a great time to enjoy the newly awakened nature, flowers and greenery so bright that it’s hard to believe your eyes. Numerous orchards, especially apple ones, had already bloomed before our arrival, so all we could do was imagine how beautiful Adygea is during the flowering period.

Lago-Naki

The Lago-Naki plateau (Lagonaki highlands) is a very popular place for travelers. But this definition usually means a set of objects located on the road to the Lago-Naki checkpoint leading to the reserve, as well as mountains and a fairly large territory of the reserve itself. As a rule, on the Internet you can see a photograph of alpine meadows and a general text about Lago-Naki. We detail the information.

Natural attractions

Devil's Gate Pass, Mount Acheshbok

Coordinates: 43.981700°N 40.475930°E

There are many legends associated with this natural landmark, one of which says that underneath is the entrance to the abode of the devil himself.

According to another, the devil once decided to make the largest cannon on Earth and fired from it, as a result of which a hole was formed, which is called the Devil's Gate.

There are many picturesque hiking trails of varying difficulty levels along the pass and mountain.

Mount Big Thach

Coordinates: 44°3'16″N 40°25'5″E

Big Thach is a peak with an unusual relief, which is not like ordinary cone-shaped massifs. On one side there is a gentle slope covered with vegetation, and on the other there is a steep cliff.

Translated from the language of local residents, it is called “The Top of God,” but you can also find another name – Bald Mountain. There are two caves on it: Crystal with large calcite crystals and the Entrance to the Underworld - a deep shaft that, according to legend, leads directly to the center of the Earth.

The Khadzhokh Gorge is a deep and narrow canyon, from the banks of which rock compositions, the Three-Headed Dragon Island and other natural attractions are visible.

There is a belief that in ancient times he was alive and punished criminals, until one day he swallowed an innocent person, because of which he was turned to stone.

Nearby there is a small zoo, automobile and pedestrian bridges.

Khadzhokhsky quarry

Coordinates: N44 17.016 E40 10.716

The quarry is located on the edge of the village of Kamennomostsky. Once upon a time, limestone, calcite, yellow-white gypsum, and selenite were mined there, but now it is abandoned, and a lake has formed at the bottom, which was called Red for the specific shade of the water. The most famous dolmen on the territory of the republic is Khadzhokhsky. Its height is 1.7 m, width 2.8 m. The Valley of Ammonites is a cluster of fossilized mollusks at the mouth of the Belaya River. These creatures lived on Earth at the same time as dinosaurs and went extinct millions of years ago. There is a theory that this place used to be the Tethys Ocean, at the bottom of which mollusks lived - now all that remains of them are shells with a diameter of 1 cm to 2 m.

Each of them has a picturesque name and its own legend. For example, the story of the “Heart of Rufabgo” waterfall says that it was formed from the heart of an immortal giant who was defeated by a brave young man. The giant's heart turned into a rock, and instead of blood, a foamy stream began to flow from it.

You can go down into it without special preparation - the gentle descent is only 25 m, equipped with steps and electric lighting. You can explore 5 large halls, each of which has its own name and features:

  • The entrance hall is filled with natural sculptural groups;
  • the stalactites and stalagmites of the Crown Hall are shaped like crowns;
  • Bogatyrsky in the form of a large cube with stalactites of different sizes;
  • there are many strangely shaped smears on the walls of the Rocket Hall;

During the Soviet Union, the legendary route “Through the Mountains to the Sea” was laid here, passing through several climatic zones from the Biosphere Reserve to the Black Sea.

Savranskaya Ropeway

  • the rarest plant species grow in Dalnyaya;
  • Berezovskaya is a real birch kingdom.

Canyon of the Tsitsa River

Coordinates: N44.5012°, E39.3216° How to get there: you can go down to the canyon from Lake Psedonakh from the Tsitsensky shelter

The canyon is located in a mountain gorge, but is rarely visited by tourists due to the complexity of the route, which requires special preparation. Along the banks there are grottoes of various sizes, and at the mouth of the river there is a natural dam made of ice and snow.

The best time to visit is late summer or autumn, when the water level in the river is minimal, but there are no hiking trails, so you will have to plan the route yourself.

Observation deck "Iron"

Before reaching the Lago-Naki checkpoint

The visit is free. From the parking lot to the observation deck it is about 300 m. Parking is available

When moving towards the Lago-Naki checkpoint, there are a large number of observation platforms. All of them are worthy of attention, but the best one, in our opinion, is on the “Iron” rock. The view from here is striking in its picturesqueness, and the convenient platform helps organize a tea party and encourages you to linger in this place.

Great Azish Cave

On the way to the Lago-Naki checkpoint

Admission is paid Visiting in groups that gather right at the ticket office You can drive up quite close by car

The largest cave in the region, accessible to the average tourist. Of the closest geographical places, larger caves are only in Abkhazia.

The object is very interesting, but there is one peculiarity. The cave, as well as part of the road leading to the Lago-Naki checkpoint, is located on the territory of the Absheronsky district, Krasnodar region. This is in no way noticeable to the traveler, except for a few signs along the route. At the same time, we mention the cave as an object of Adygea, because most people do not know that this is the Krasnodar region and this can cause confusion, especially since the only good quality road leading here goes through Adygea.

Excursions and other entertainment in Adygea

The main entertainment for tourists in Adygea are ATV rides, horseback riding, visiting thermal pools, jeeping and rafting. Similar entertainment is offered in more or less large hotels and in all tourist places. There are also numerous billboards along the road.

excursions in Adygea

Rope parks with obstacle courses are also popular in Adygea; they are open in almost all parks and canyons.

excursions in Adygea

obstacle park adygea

We traveled in our jeep, so we somehow avoided such entertainment. But next time we’ll definitely go for a ride on quads. We didn’t dare to go rafting because in May the water in the rivers is icy and the current is very strong due to the rains.

But, if you believe the billboards, they go out to the river in any weather, they even give you wetsuits.

Traveling around Adygea without a car is not particularly convenient, but organized excursions can help out. We have never seen large buses; private excursions in UAZs and other cars are more popular here.

Thermal springs, as I already said, are convenient to visit in Tula, as well as in the village of Yaroslavskaya. The water in them is rich in silicon and other useful microelements that heal the body. Of course, to obtain a therapeutic effect, you need to undergo a course of procedures, and as entertainment, it’s just nice to relax in warm water. The Aquathermo Hotel (hotel description) pampers tourists with foam parties, although I haven’t been to them myself.

Mount Fisht

Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve

Visiting the reserve is paid, the pass can be purchased in special places Hiking, requires preparation

View of Mount Fisht from the top of Mount Oshten
Hiking to Fisht requires thorough preparation. When climbing a mountain, the traveler will have to overcome a glacier, which means he will need ice axes and crampons for his feet. The easiest time to cross the glacier is in August.

What to buy and bring?

In addition to standard magnets, plates, figurines of horsemen and similar souvenirs, you can buy more useful and pleasant things in Adygea. We chose a whole package of herbal teas: bath, vitamin, mountain, thyme. I just love these herbs; I drink hot tea in winter and chilled tea in summer.

Of course, at every step you can buy honey of various colors and tastes. We took linden and walnuts in honey.

The parents were bought socks made of sheep's wool and warm belts made of dog.

If you like oriental things, you can find cool souvenir daggers, lamps and jugs.

They also sell sheep rugs, skins, and fur vests. Wine and mead are also available at every turn, but somehow it didn’t suit us.

Pshekhsky waterfall

Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve

The waterfall is located on the territory of the reserve, a pass can be purchased in special places. The hike is not difficult, suitable for beginners

Pshekhsky waterfall (Fishtinsky waterfall) is very beautiful and will not leave anyone indifferent. Streams of water fall from a height of about 165 meters, making it one of the highest waterfalls in the Caucasus.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the beauty of the place itself, the waterfall flows from the saddle of the Pshekho-Su and Fisht mountains.

Many people don’t even know that the waterfall itself is located on the territory of the reserve. And it’s worth clarifying that you won’t be able to buy a pass here. Therefore, most visitors pass here without buying anything, and we personally know people who have been here dozens of times without a pass and did not even know that they needed one. But from time to time, rangers come here and fine you for unauthorized visits.

Food in Adygea

Of course, Adyghe cheese! It is tasty and fresh, costs about 700 rubles per kilogram. We bought cheese in Kamennomostsky, near the Magnit store there is a tent with a good selection of cheeses. Here, at the mini market, they took ripe and tasty tomatoes, excellent bread from the store and enjoyed it.

Adyghe cheese

In May you can buy delicious strawberries for 250-350 rubles per basket.

In all the cafes and restaurants we visited, you will definitely be fed with freshly prepared kebab. In general, it seems to me that the whole republic smells of it.

Among the local dishes, we tried fried Adyghe cheese with herbs, beef and lamb soup, and incredibly delicious stewed chicken in sour cream.

Prices depend on the level of the establishment. For example, in the hotel restaurant the prices are almost Moscow. In Belovodye there is a hotel with restaurants in a hunting style with a real fireplace, you also leave the same amount as in an average restaurant in Moscow. But less popular cafes are pleasing with their prices. For example, one day we stopped near a cafe we liked in the mountains and had lunch together for 700 rubles: hot dishes, pancakes, shish kebab and soup. Everything was simply amazing!

In Maykop we were in the Aquarius restaurant, apparently not the cheapest in the city. Huge portions and incredibly delicious food, and the bill came out to only 1,200 rubles, taking into account that we ate hot dishes, soup and fried cheese for two.

So, prices for food in Adygea are different, and, paradoxically, the simpler the place, the tastier the food.

Pancakes with honey and herbal tea are popular as a snack here. This delicious snack can be had at the observation decks, after a painful selection of souvenirs.

There are restaurants and cafes at hotels, in villages, and also along the mountain road. We never even grilled shish kebab ourselves, although the hotels had well-equipped gazebos; it’s too tasty and inexpensive to eat in a cafe.

Mount Big Thach

Natural Park "Bolshoy Thach"

Admission is free Serious hiking, requires preparation Needs transportation

Mountains Small Thach and Bolshoi Thach
Natural Park “Big Thach” is one of the most beautiful places in the region, but a hike here requires preparation and lasts several days. Visiting the mountains is free, but a drop-off is required (this service is not difficult to order). That part of the journey that travelers cover in passable cars for 2-3 hours, on foot will have to spend 1 additional day in each direction.

Weather in Adygea in May

The weather in May in Adygea is unpredictable. As local residents said, sometimes in May it is hot, and sometimes it rains. We weren't particularly lucky with the weather; it was hot and sunny only for the first two days. The rest of the time we moved in short bursts when the rain stopped. The air was cool, an average of 15 degrees Celsius. And after our departure, Adygea was covered with a thick layer of hail. So, depending on your luck. One good thing is that even such bad weather could not spoil the impressions of the sights of Adygea; nevertheless, it is beautiful in any weather.

Granite Canyon

Not far from the village of Khamyshki

An incredibly picturesque gorge located near the village of Khamyshki. Here the Belaya River is constrained by rocky banks. Granite Canyon is beautiful in many places.

For lovers of Caucasian legends

According to legend, Prince Abadzesh ruled in one of the local villages. He had a beautiful daughter, Naki, for whom he meticulously searched for a suitable groom. Only a noble and valiant horseman could become his son-in-law.

But the wayward girl did not want to get married, preferring trips through the mountains on horseback to housework. She often accompanied her father on trips around the estate. One day they went to pastures high in the mountains. Countless flowers grow in these meadows, next to them there is snow that does not melt in the summer, waterfalls roar in the deep gorges, and the rocks above the abyss resemble high sea waves. Here the beautiful Naki felt especially happy and free.

The princess happily galloped across the open spaces, but suddenly a rider appeared in front of her - slender and handsome. She looked into his eyes and experienced a strong feeling as if the sky and stars had descended into her soul, day and night had merged, and the wind from the mountains began to caress her skin.

The horseman greeted politely, calling the prince's daughter by name. Hearing the voice, the girl felt as if the earth had opened up under her feet and she was falling into the abyss. But the princess answered sternly:

Why did you address me by name, who are you?

I am Lago, I know you, because I am your father’s shepherd.

Hearing this, Naki saw that her interlocutor was poorly dressed. She nodded to him and proudly rode on, because it was not proper for the daughter of a prince to talk to a man alone. But the shepherd shouted after her:

Wait, Nucky, I’ve loved you for a long time, since childhood. I have been waiting for a long time to be able to tell you how much I love you, and I will come here every day just to see you again.

Returning home, the girl lost peace. The image of the young man did not leave her day and night. She also fell in love. And, in the end, I decided to go to the mountains again, to Lago. He was waiting for her, as promised. They understood that they could not be together, like the shepherd and the princess. They only talked about their happiness and did not even touch each other. These meetings began to happen more often and Lago one day suggested that Nucky leave. She did not want to part with her father, but she could not resist the feeling and agreed to flee to distant lands with her beloved.

However, their connection was no longer a secret to other people. The prince's servants reported everything to the ruler. Having learned about his daughter’s relationship with the shepherd, Abadzesh became terribly angry and ordered the shepherd’s execution. He decided to marry off his daughter immediately. Having learned about this, the girl ran away from the house and rushed to Lago.

Together, running away from pursuit, they found themselves in front of a cliff. Having dismounted and touched each other for the first time, they decided that life apart was impossible and stepped into the abyss, holding hands.

Since then, these meadows have been named after the two lovers. The place from where they rushed down is located on the edge of the “Stone Sea” ridge, on the Nagoy-Kosh rock. Here stands a lonely menhir, under which Lago and Naki rest, still holding hands.

Interesting Facts

  1. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the plateau was the bottom of the ocean, and the mountains were coral reefs. On the slopes of Fisht you can now find ammonites - imprints of prehistoric sea inhabitants, sea urchins, stars, and corals.
  2. The cave system “White Star” - “Cross” - “Tourist” is one of the deepest in Russia (640 m).
  3. Mount Fisht in good weather is visible even from Krasnodar. By climbing it, you can see the entire Caucasus Nature Reserve at once.
  4. Despite the legend, the name of the highland is associated with local ethnic toponymy. Researchers believe that Naki is a derivative of the ethnonym “Nogai”, since in this area there are objects Nagoy-kosh (translated as “mountain of the Nogais”) and Nogai-Chuk (“land of the Nogais”). It is also possible that the Adyghe origin of words meaning “desert (l'egapIe) upland (nekIy).”
  5. Another legend about a beautiful girl is associated with a huge stone on the road between the village of Kamennomostsky and the village of Dakhovskaya. It is believed that a local Cossack woman managed to jump on him on horseback. That’s why the stone is called “Cossack”.
  6. In ancient times, local residents used caves as underground fortresses.
  7. Dolmens, ancient structures made of huge granite blocks, used to dot the surroundings of the plateau.

Road reconstruction

The large-scale reconstruction of the Dakhovskaya – Lagonaki road, with a length of more than 10 km, necessary for the development of the tourism industry, has been completed. This was stated by the head of the Republic of Adygea Murat Kumpilov. He noted that the road surface on the highway was changed, protective barriers were installed, observation platforms and emergency ramps were equipped.

Construction of ski slopes and gambling area

In 2022, construction of the all-season mountain eco-resort “Lagonaki” will begin. It will be built in several stages. It is planned to build several tens of kilometers of trails and develop the infrastructure of the area.

But activists and scientists are against land development. They believe that the resort will affect areas protected by UNESCO, and a gambling zone may appear in the protected area . At the same time, supporters of the resort construction argue that the facilities are going to be built in places that are not of particular value.

Many activists are unhappy that they were not allowed in at the meeting to discuss the resort plan, citing restrictive measures introduced during the pandemic.

According to the developer, a ski resort will be built on the Lagonaki plateau with the least impact on the environment. The creation of an eco-resort will be the beginning of the development of tourism, economy and infrastructure in the Republic of Adygea.

Dolmen Hadzhokhsky

The Khadzhokh dolmen is one of the most mysterious archaeological sites in Adygea. Scientists still do not stop arguing about the purpose of these buildings. Some claim that they were used for rituals and burials, others believe that these are the first residential buildings of ancient people who inhabited the area thousands of years ago.

You can find the Khadzhokhsky dolmen in the north of the village of Kamennomostsky. Its height reaches 1.7 meters and width – 2.8 meters. This structure was approximately built in the 3rd century BC.

Next to the dolmen there is another unusual phenomenon of local nature - a tree with 14 trunks from one root.

Khadzhokhsky quarry

This quarry was once a thriving mining operation for limestone, selenite, yellow-white gypsum and small calcite crystals. Now here you can see the remains of a once thriving industry overgrown with grass.

Not far from the quarry there are dilapidated buildings with pipes. These are old lime kilns. Nearby there is a new mobile plant for processing rocks mined in the vicinity of the village of Kamennomostsky.

At the very bottom of the quarry there is Lake Krasnoe, fed by springs. The reservoir got its name because of the reddish hue of the stones. The water in it is always cold, but at the same time very clean, despite its cloudy color.

Briefly about Lago-Naki

There are several settlements located on the plateau, each of which has its own attractions. It is distinguished by its special beauty, unique landscapes and positive energy. Winter holidays in Lago-Naki are no less interesting and exciting than summer holidays. Rafting tourists have the opportunity to raft down the famous Belaya River. In general, there are enough options for spending time.
