What is population density and how to calculate it
Population density is the number of people living in an area of one square kilometer. Typically, this geographic indicator is calculated for a city, region, or country.
Population density is calculated quite simply. The number of inhabitants of a region or country is divided by the area of its territory.
When calculating this indicator for large areas, such as hemispheres or the entire planet, uninhabited areas such as oceans or deserts may be excluded. This increases the accuracy of calculations.
Population density depends on many factors, for example, on the terrain, distance from seas, rivers and roads, but first of all, of course, on the climate.

Population density in Russia by region in 2022
The most densely populated regions of Russia today are the regions of the European part of the country and the republics of the North Caucasus. The population density in the Central Federal District reaches 60.37 people. per sq. km, and in the North Caucasus - 58.48 people. per sq. km.
This figure is relatively high in the south of Russia and the Volga region. In the Southern Federal District it is 36.81 people. per sq. km., and in the Volga Federal District - 28.03 people. per sq. km.
It is significantly lower in the Northwestern part of the country and in the Urals. In the Northwestern Federal District - 8.26 people. per sq. km., in the Ural Federal District - 6.78 people. per sq. km.
Territories with minimal population density are Siberia and the Far East. In the Siberian Federal District this figure is 3.90 people. per sq. km., and in the Far East - even 1.17 people. per sq. km.
The highest population density is in cities; in rural areas this figure is, accordingly, much lower (see Share of urban and rural populations in the regions of Russia).
The most populous subjects of the Russian Federation
Speaking about the most densely populated regions of Russia, we should immediately highlight three cities, which are independent subjects of the Russian Federation.
These are Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sevastopol. Naturally, the population density there is higher than in other constituent entities of the Russian Federation, which include both urban and rural areas. In Moscow, the population density is 4941.45 people. per sq. km, in St. Petersburg - 3837.73 people. per sq. km, and in Sevastopol - 590.27 people. per sq. km.
“Comparing these cities with other subjects of the Russian Federation in this context, in my opinion, is not very correct,” says Top-RF.ru columnist Dmitry Danilov.
Therefore, we will leave them outside the brackets of our rating. In this case, the region with the highest population density is the Moscow region. Its indicator is 173.89 people. per sq. km.
This is followed by the republics of Ingushetia (165.09), Chechnya (92.63), and North Ossetia (86.78). Rounding out the top five most densely populated regions of Russia (excluding MSK, St. Petersburg and Sevastopol) is the Krasnodar Territory, with a population density of 75.30 people. per sq. km.
