Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary

  • Address: Cathedral Square, 1.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Aleksandrovsk-Grushevsk began to rapidly develop and increase in population. A couple of wooden churches (Petropavlovskaya and Alexander Nevskaya) could no longer accommodate all the parishioners. Then the construction of a new brick cathedral began. The work was completed in 1902.

The city was decorated with a cross-domed church in the eclectic style. The main building was crowned with a golden five-domed structure on light drums. The cubic array was decorated with spinning wheels, blades and original friezes. The refectory connected the temple with a three-tiered bell tower under a tent.

Divine services in the cathedral continued exactly until the moment when Aleksandrovsk-Grushevsk was renamed Shakhty. In 1920, the church building was nationalized and given over to a tram workshop.

At the end of the 1990s, the last tram was assembled within the walls of the cathedral, and the building again came into the possession of the Russian Orthodox Church. The ancient drawings according to which the temple was built have not been preserved, so it had to be restored using photographs and technical measurements of the temple from 1929.

Water underground

As a rule, says Sergei Antonovich, in deep mines the problem of water flow also arises, since water horizons intersect. The North Ural miners again faced this problem. We said above that Vorkutaugol mines in difficult mining and geological conditions, and it is also not easy for SUBR to obtain minerals.

The layer here is quite thick (up to 5 m), but steeply dipping - 25 degrees. This location of the ore body does not allow the widespread use of modern high-performance mining equipment: it will not overcome such slopes.

Plus, the deposits that the enterprise’s mines develop are separated by powerful tectonic disturbances, and each of them is cut by small-amplitude disturbances. Mineralization is intermittent, with barren areas. Well, a large influx of water.

“The history of the development of SUBR has always been associated with solving the problems of protecting mines from the harmful effects of ground and surface waters. At the present stage of deposit development, the water content of rocks is 50-70 m3 for the extraction of 1 ton of bauxite. takes comprehensive measures to ensure a safe environment.

All mines are equipped with powerful water collectors with the necessary pumping units, and drainage units are equipped on the surface. The riverbeds and streams located above the field are lined with concrete for more than 60 km. All these structures are under control, and the relevant services carry out preventive repairs of existing equipment,” comments Vitaly Matveev.

True, not all deep mines have water problems. For example, in Osinnikovskaya EVRAZ the water inflow is relatively small. As well as in the Skalisty Glubokiy mine of Norilsk Nickel, which surprised the company’s specialists themselves.

According to design calculations, this is 20-40 “cubes” per hour. It is interesting that Vadim Naftal, head of the industrial automation and metrology department of the Information Technology Department of PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel, calls this factor an additional complexity.

“It turns out that our mine will be dry, and this is a large amount of dust that can interfere with the operation of unmanned, autonomous and remotely controlled equipment. In addition, in such conditions there is a high probability of fire. According to the preliminary plan, we will add water for conditioning.

At the same time, there are significant advantages: there will be no high humidity: coupled with elevated temperatures, it would make people’s work in such conditions simply unbearable,” says Vadim Mikhailovich.
