Administrative and municipal status
Within the structure of administrative units, Yelizovo serves as the administrative center of Yelizovo District, even though it is not part of it.[1] As an administrative unit, it is registered as Yelizovo City of regional jurisdiction
- an administrative unit with a status equal to that of a district.[1]

Warmer in summer, colder in winter
The village of Staroostrozhnoe was founded in 1848. The first military governor of Kamchatka at that time was Vasily Zavoiko. He became famous for skillfully repelling the attack of the French and British during the so-called Peter and Paul Defense. The battle took place in 1854. In honor of the winner, the village of Staroostrozhnoe was renamed the village of Zavoiko. The settlement bore this name until 1923, after which it began to be called Elizovo.
Elizovo is located next to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, but the climate in the cities is strikingly different. It is warmer here in summer, but winter comes earlier. This is due to the distance from the ocean shore. Thanks to the warm summer, cherries, plums, and apples are successfully grown here. For a long time, residents have been growing vegetables.
In July, the thermometer can rise to 30 degrees. The average temperature in the summer months is 15 degrees. The coldest months are January and February. During this period, the average temperature is minus 9 degrees. There are also twenty-degree frosts. Most precipitation falls between October and March. The peak occurs in November.

City `s history
The first settlement on the site of present-day Yelizovo was founded in the 17th century by the Itelmens; it was a small fort. When the Cossacks arrived in these places at the beginning of the next century, they developed difficult relations with the local residents, which led to clashes and bloodshed. The settlement was destroyed by the Cossacks, this was a response to the murder of their comrades by the Kamchadals, led by Ataman Antsiferov. These tragic events became the reason that the place began to be called the Old Fortress tract. For a long time no one settled here.
At the beginning of the 19th century, a small village was built in the Old Fortress, where a family of Russian settlers began to live. The village of the same name began with this settlement. Statistics from the mid-19th century already show the presence of four houses. All of them were occupied by members of the same family, the father lived in one house, and his sons with their wives and children lived in the rest. As people arrived in Kamchatka from mainland Russia, the village grew. By 1876, more than 80 people already lived here, and in the 20s of the twentieth century, 226.
The Old Ostrog (or Staroostrozhnoye) retained its name until 1897, when it was renamed the village of Zavoiko, in honor of the first Governor-General of Kamchatka, a remarkable man in all respects. It would be fair to continue to bear this name, but during the Civil War, dramatic events took place in Kamchatka. On the banks of the Avacha there were bloody battles for Soviet power, a detachment of red partisans was led by Georgy Elizov. He died. To perpetuate his memory, in 1924 the village of Zavoiko was renamed Yelizovo. Later a bust of the partisan commander was erected here.
The village residents were mainly engaged in fishing, hunting, and agriculture. But then it was not possible to make fishing in the Avacha River industrial. In addition, the area did not have a supply of timber. These circumstances caused the slow development of Yelizovo. But after Soviet power was established here, a plan was adopted to expand it. They began to develop the fishing industry, and in 1931 a collective farm was created. At the same time, the infrastructure was improved, such benefits of civilization as a bathhouse and telegraph appeared, a school was built, a store was opened, a club was created, where cultural and educational work began.
The status of Elizovo changed in 1964, it began to be called a workers' village, and in 1975 - a city. Fishing industry enterprises remain the main sector of the local economy, and agriculture also exists. Tourism is developing rapidly, which has already become a significant source of income for the region. Elizovo is located in a wonderful place where there are all opportunities for a varied recreation.

City of Yelizovo.
Elizovo is an air gateway and the main transport hub of the Kamchatka Territory, the second largest city on the peninsula. Here, as in the regional capital, one can feel the benevolent participation of nature and the exoticism of volcanoes. It is in the Elizovsky district that the most popular attractions of Kamchatka among tourists are located.
The city of Elizovo, where your trip to Kamchatka will most likely begin, is located on the banks of the Avachi River. The city was founded more than a century and a half ago on the site of the Itelmen prison that was destroyed in 1712. During its short history, the city changed its name twice: it was founded as Old Ostrog, then it was renamed Zavoiko - in honor of the famous Kamchatka governor Vasily Stepanovich Zavoiko, under whom during the Peter and Paul Defense of 1854 the landing of the Anglo-French squadron was successfully repelled; in 1924 the city was given its modern name - in honor of the commander of the partisan detachment Georgy Matveevich Elizov, who died in Kamchatka in 1922.
Not far from the airport, at the exit from the city towards Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (North-Eastern Highway), a monument was erected in 2011 with the sign “Russia Begins Here” A: on the pedestal there is a she-bear with a fish clutched in her teeth and a cub following the mother. This monument, installed against the backdrop of a panorama of the Koryaksky and Avachinsky volcanoes, became a symbol of Elizov.
The main airport is located in Yelizovo, through which air communication between the peninsula and other Russian and foreign cities is carried out, as well as flights on domestic routes. On the territory of the airport there is the Museum of Civil Aviation of Kamchatka.
There is regular passenger service between the airport, residential areas of Elizov and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which includes municipal buses, private minibuses and taxis.
Elizovsky district is very interesting from a tourist point of view. Most of it consists of specially protected natural areas. Many of the attractions for which tourists go to Kamchatka are located nearby: “home” volcanoes, Paratunka hot springs, the Nalychevo natural park, picturesque rivers and lakes are some ten kilometers away. Tourists leave Yelizovo to ski or snowboard, hunt, and fish. If you are looking for comfort, then you can find a place to stay overnight in the vicinity of this city, for example in Paratunka: cozy, modern hotel complexes have been built here, where regulars prefer to stay (prices are comparable to those in Petropavlovsk).
Recently, Elizovo, which has been actively developing, in Soviet times and earlier | which greeted guests with the same type of buildings, began to be updated: several new districts with buildings made of steel and glass have sprung up here, a modern sports and recreation complex has opened, squares and alleys have been landscaped. This city is neat, clean and quiet, lovingly assembled from nearby villages. The small center (only a couple of kilometers long) is built up with low-rise residential buildings.
The only zoo in the Kamchatka Territory operates in Elizovo. It was founded in 1986 by Anatoly Aleksandrovich Shevlyagin, a well-known cultural figure in Kamchatka, on the basis of a home menagerie. Despite its modest size, the park is a favorite vacation spot for Kamchatka residents. Individual and group excursions are organized here, and new enclosures and pens for animals are constantly being installed. In addition to the usual for any zoo rabbits, parrots, guinea pigs, monkeys, turtles and snakes, the territory is inhabited by reindeer, polar owl, Kamchatka brown bear, and white-tailed eagle. Visitors can become guardians and help the zoo financially. So, recently the guardians helped the veteran Elizovsky crocodile: he moved to a more spacious enclosure.
Those wishing to get to know the natural features and history of Kamchatka are advised to visit the Elizovsky Regional Museum of Local Lore, divided into several halls: the hall of anthropology takes us back to the time of the birth of humanity, the hall of ethnography tells about the indigenous population of the region, the hall of modern history refers to the events of the mid-20th century, the hall of democratic movements – in the last years of the existence of the USSR, the hall of nature and natural resources tells about the ecology and protected areas of Kamchatka. An ethnic club “Uiritchakh” has been created at the museum to study the Itelmen, Koryak, Even and Chukchi languages. Excursion services are possible by appointment.
In 2013, it was opened in Elizovo after reconstruction. Museum of Nature of the Kronotsky State Natural Biosphere Reserve. Here you can get; comprehensive information about the unique ecosystems of plants and animals living in specially protected areas. The interior is inspired by the natural corners of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the South Kamchatka Federal Reserve: forest glades, tundra, sea coast, volcanic calderas; and thermal areas of the Valley of Geysers.
The museum was created back in 1983; now, after renovation and complete renovation of the exhibition, they offer new, interactive ones; excursions: visitors can make flower mosaics; guess by touch what is in containers; watch films in 3D format filmed in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve (instead of chairs, comfortable ottomans in the form of large stones are offered).
The Gora Moroznaya ski resort, popular in Kamchatka, is 7 km from the city. The skiing season on the slopes runs from December to April. The base has five ski slopes with different slopes, suitable for all ski disciplines, and there are two lifts. You can come to the mountain with your own skis, boards and equipment or use rental services. In addition to rentals, there are workshops where vacationers can always be helped to prepare their own equipment, a medical center with qualified medical workers, an administrative center and a cozy cafe.
In 2009, an ethnocultural center was created in the Elizovsky district, 12 kilometers from Elizov. Two yarangas and a yukolnik have been recreated here, and dogs and horses are kept. The center offers a variety of ethnographic cultural and educational programs for adults and children. Guests of the Kainyran camp are offered to try Kamchatka fish soup and Koryak herbal tea in the yaranga. The concert will give you an unforgettable experience - mesmerizing playing of the harp, national songs and scenes from the life of hunters. The center is open all year round. The Zelenovskie Ozerki hydropathic clinic is located nearby.
