Osa is a city in the Perm region of Russia. Wikipedia says that its population is 20,900 people, this is information for 2022. It also says where Osa is located: it is located on the shore of the Votkinsk reservoir on the Kama River. It is noteworthy that the atmosphere of an ancient district town has been well preserved here. A walk through the city's surroundings will not leave anyone indifferent.
Historical information, origin, name
The city has an interesting history. According to chronicles, Osa has existed since 1591, its first name was Novo-Nikolskaya Sloboda, the founders were the Kaluzhenin brothers. In 1737, city status was received. Osa turned out to be the center of the voivodeship. Since the 18th century, trade has been actively developing here thanks to the passage of the Siberian Treaty. According to it, numerous peasants and convicts were sent to the Far East. In 1774, Osa was captured by the troops of E. Pugachev. Since 1781 it has been a county town. After 1917, Osa turned into a regional center, and the first industrial enterprises arose here.
It is curious that in Soviet times, in order to improve the permeability and increase the strength of oil-bearing formations, underground nuclear explosions were carried out at one of the fields.
As for the name of the city, it comes from the name of the Osinka River. It is believed that it is of Vogul origin. Now in scientific circles there is no single point of view on this matter. Local residents believe that the city got its name thanks to Emelyan Pugachev, who said that the city’s defenders “sting like a wasp.” The connection between the name of the town and this insect can also be seen in the coat of arms; a beehive is drawn on it. This can be easily explained by the fact that beekeeping is a favorite pastime of the Osin residents.
Climatic conditions, transport
In the city of Osa, Perm Territory, a temperate continental climate prevails. There are long and cold winters here. The average January temperature is -13.3 degrees. Summer is not hot and passes quickly.
The city has a river port, from which all freight transportation along the Kama River to other populated areas is carried out. There is public transport, it is represented by minibuses and buses. From the car station (located in the central part of the city) you can go to Komarovo, Kashkara, Tchaikovsky.
Osa is located 140 km southwest of Perm. You can get here either through Kukushtan or through the village of Yugo-Kamsky. There are regular bus services, transport takes more than two hours.
Hymn
A marvelous city with the name Osa was born for work and for peace. And as the centuries go by, it only becomes more beautiful. Chorus: Native, beloved city! You are dear to all Aspen residents. Your minds and hands worked wonders. You are the city of our honor, You are the city of our song. We are proud of you, Beauty Osa. Neither the fire nor the history of the terrible thunderstorm broke the Wasp - Once again, from the black ashes of time, the Wasp rose like a Phoenix Bird. Chorus. The feat of battle and the feat of labor, the feat of faith and the feat of mind have always been performed by the Osinians. The country can be proud of them. Chorus. Words by V.V. Kozlov Music by S.V. Shchelkunov
Churches and temples
The first church of Osa back in the 16th century was the Assumption Cathedral. It was located in the central part of the old city. In 1778, the temple was damaged by fire. Since 1792, it began to be restored. After restoration work, the building was no longer wooden, but stone. In 1936, the temple stopped holding services and closed. The building began to be used as a Defense House. Later, an agronomy school and a regional museum were located here.
A short time later the building was repaired. During the work carried out, the bell tower and dome were completely dismantled, and the second floor was equipped to meet the needs of the school.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral is made in the Russian-Byzantine style ; it is one of the symbols of the city. The building was erected several years before the February Revolution of 1917. It reaches a height of 44 meters. This is the second largest church in the Perm diocese.
The building is decorated with magnificent red brick patterns; inside there are 3 iconostasis, for which popular Moscow artists painted icons. During Soviet times there were:
- museum;
- gym;
- workshops;
- bus station;
- stock.
Only in 2004 the cathedral was consecrated again. Now it is crowned with 4 domes and a four-meter cross. When the weather is good, the temple can be seen very far away.
The Kazan Church has existed since the end of the 19th century. It was erected on the site of a wooden cemetery cathedral. The design of the architecture includes different styles, the spirit of eclecticism prevails. The cathedral is single-altar, it is decorated with a luxurious multi-tiered bell tower under an onion dome and 5 decorative domes.
In the 30s of the 20th century, the temple did not function, but in 1944, services began to be held there again. At that time, it was the only functioning church in the Osinsky region. In the 90s the building was restored. In 2007, it was possible to restore its main dome. Now the Kazan Temple is considered an architectural monument of regional significance.
Interesting museums
The clock museum has been operating in the city for a short time; it was opened in 2015 with money from a local native. The collection includes about 200 items from the 19th and 20th centuries, and is constantly being updated with new exhibits.
Since the mid-20th century, the building of the Assumption Cathedral has housed a local history museum. During the reconstruction of the church it had to be moved. Since 1987, the museum has again functioned in the building of the former temple. On the excursion you can see a variety of historical values:
- paintings;
- coins;
- watch.
There is also a huge exhibition dedicated to Bereng. The main exhibit is a diorama called “The Capture of the Osa Fortress by Pugachev”, the size of which is 160 square meters.
The nature museum showcases the richness of the city's flora and fauna. The exhibition includes more than 300 species of animals, plants and minerals. The unique “Osinsky Globe” is located here, clearly showing the geographical connections of the Perm Territory with literally the entire planet.
It is recommended to pay special attention to the diorama “Nature of the Osinsky Kama Region”. It is divided into 4 parts, each of which illustrates one of the seasons. The museum also displays a herbarium of plants and an interesting collection of stuffed animals.
Schools and gymnasiums
Almost the entire Karl-Marx Street is lined with ancient merchant houses and shops. Of these, it is worth highlighting the former mansion of the merchant I. Emelin, built by him in 1850. Now the building belongs to a correctional school. At the corner with Sverdlova Street there is a two-story brick building in the style of late Russian classicism - this is the City Four-Class School. It was erected in 1887, and now there is a school there. It is curious that from 1937 to 1942, V. Motyl, the creator of the popular film “White Sun of the Desert,” studied here.
Diagonally from the school there is a low brick building built by the merchant P. Safronov at the end of the 19th century. Now on the ground floor there is a Russian Post office. Across the street you can see a nice building with a mezzanine, this is an excellent example of “wooden” classicism.
If you go back a little and walk along Sverdlova Street, at the intersection you will notice the building that once housed the Women's Gymnasium. This two-story house was erected in 1906 by the Zemstvo Administration. Particular attention was paid to subjects of pedagogical orientation. In 1922, a technical school was founded here, which was later transformed into a school. Since 2009, it has been transformed into a vocational pedagogical college.
It is curious that at different times popular writers V. Astafiev and V. Bianki performed here.
If you turn right at the intersection and walk a little along Internatsionalnaya Street, the Zemstvo Primary School will soon appear before your eyes. Its building can safely be called one of the most picturesque examples of Art Nouveau architecture. Elements of ancient Russian architecture successfully complement this solution. This school was built from 1912 to 1914 according to the design of the famous architect E. Grunfeldt. The construction of the building was timed to coincide with the three hundredth anniversary of the reign of the Romanov dynasty. It should be noted that there have always been schools here, now the Osinskaya Gymnasium is located here.
Opposite is the estate of the Cherdyntsev merchants, built in the mid-19th century. In addition to the mansion, there are also warehouse buildings, each of them built of brick. Local residents know about this merchant dynasty. The Cherdyntsevs belonged to :
- malt and brewery;
- Fedorovsky distillery enterprise.

Osinsky Museum of Local Lore: history of the Wasp and birdwatching
Where to start getting to know the city? From a trip to the local history museum, of course. It occupies the former building of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was erected in 1792-1824. The temple closed in 1936, and now, due to numerous alterations (in the mid-1950s, the dome and high bell tower were demolished, the interior space was divided into 2 floors, and the windows were redone), the two-story brick building does not look like a church at all.

The bear symbolizes the Perm region, the wasp symbolizes the city, and a huge bag made of matting is a sack for storing salt, bread and flaxseed - the main trade of the Osinsk merchants and the labor of artisans. In the modern view of the Osinians, a qul (bag) speaks of the wealth and well-being of the residents of Osa. There is an inscription on the sculpture: “The matting sack is not fun, it is the key to success for fellow countrymen.”

Holy Trinity Cathedral: symbol of the Wasp
The monumental and majestic cathedral with beautiful stone patterns is the largest church in the city, the second largest in the Perm diocese. This is the symbol of the Wasp, one of its most beautiful monuments. The red brick building was built according to the design of the Perm architect A.B. Turchevich, who relied on examples of ancient Russian domed churches of the 17th century. That is why it seems that the Holy Trinity Cathedral was built in ancient times, and not in 1902-1916. Today, services are held in the temple, and restoration and restoration work that began in 2007 continues.

There is a park in Osa, created in 2022 in memory of the stay of the Second Kamchatka Expedition under Vitus Bering in Osa (Stepan Razin St., 79, next to the Neftyanik Hotel). Its layout reflects the route of the discoverers: Osa, Kungur, Solikamsk, Kamensk-Uralsky - each territory has its own zone.

A boat is installed at the “Osinskaya site” - a recreated model of the ship on which Bering arrived in Osa; Nearby there is an antique-style children's playground. The symbol of Kungur was the ice cave, Kamensk-Uralsky was the cannon, and Solikamsk was the gazebo and plants from the Solikamsk Botanical Garden. In 2022, a memorial plaque was unveiled in the Vitus Bering park in memory of the stay of Russian navy officers in Osa in the fall of 1733 - the leaders of the detachments of the Second Kamchatka Expedition.
There is also another memorial sign in the city to Vitus Bering and the Second Kamchatka Expedition. It is installed on the high bank of the Kama, opposite the house of the merchant Cherdyntsev (Osa, Kobeleva St., 5). Mansion of the Cherdyntsev merchants: master classes and interesting events
The famous Cherdyntsev dynasty came to Osa from Kungur in 1825. The merchants owned distilleries in Osa, Kungur and Birsk, had a brewery and malt plant in Perm, and ran numerous drinking establishments. The Cherdyntsevs were actively involved in charity work: in 1914, with their funds, a two-story surgical building of the hospital was built, and the Cherdyntsevs’ garden regularly became a platform for theatrical premieres. Now the mansion houses the Municipal Budgetary Institution “Center for Folk Culture and Youth”, where creative groups practice, master classes, concerts and educational seminars are held.

Walking along Lenin and Karl Marx Street: Merchant Wasp
There are many monuments of Russian provincial architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries in Osa. In the center of the city, an almost untouched architectural ensemble has been preserved - with cathedrals, merchant estates, gymnasiums, and shopping arcades. A walk along Karl Marx Street will take you back in time! Admire the superbly preserved ancient buildings - the former store of the merchant G. A. Amirkhanov, the former printing house of I. A. Kuznetsov, the estate of the merchant P. S. Safonov and the mansion of the merchant I. P. Emelin.
Lenin Street is no less picturesque. Here is the building of the fort (1828), which housed a prison for more than 100 years; next to the fort there is an even older building - the building of the voivode's office from 1802. In the middle of the 19th century, the Old Trading Rows were built (Lenin St., 4a). During Soviet times, they were “expanded” and turned into a two-story department store. New shopping arcades (Lenin St., 21) were erected at the beginning of the 20th century with funds from the City Government. Before the revolution, merchants rented 26 shops there. Today, in both buildings, as in the old days, there are shops.

At the address st. Lenina, 33, there is another ancient building - the mansion of the merchant A.I. Osipova (1860). This is an example of late classicism. Previously, the house belonged to the Osipov dynasty, famous merchants and philanthropists of the city. It was they who opened the first Empire cinema in Osa, allocated funds for the construction of the Mother of God of Kazan Cemetery Church, laid out the beautiful Osipovsky Garden (now a stadium on this site) and donated a significant amount for the construction of the Trinity Cathedral. Currently, the house of A.I. Osipov is occupied by a children's art school.

Kul Osinsky, Rhapsody of Love
In Osa you can see many interesting sights. Merchant houses, ancient shopping arcades, and buildings of the district and voivodeship offices have been preserved here. Arriving in the historical center of this city, it is as if you are transported back to the 19th century.
Among tourists, the composition “Kul Osinsky” is of greatest interest, reminiscent of the city’s main trade in the old days. Half a century ago, matting coolies were made here; they were in great demand not only in the Perm province, but also beyond its borders. According to legend, the sculpture makes wishes come true. Vacationers often climb inside to take an original photograph.
In front of the Palace of Culture there is a landmark with the beautiful name “Rhapsody of Love”. This is a heart made of nickel tubes. Local newlyweds come here to make a wish and walk through the sculpture (then it will definitely come true). In the Palace of Culture, the Winter Garden deserves great attention.
Near the local history museum you can see a bas-relief dedicated to the Kaluzhenin brothers, who founded the city. There is also a reconstruction of part of the Osinsk fortress. From here you have a beautiful view of the Kama River. During your trip, you should also definitely visit the Valley of Waterfalls near Elovo (you can get here by car from the town of Osa in just 40 minutes).
Thus, Osa is a city that will be of interest to all inquisitive people . A holiday here will allow you to touch the wonderful moments of the history of the Fatherland.
Coat of arms
In the 1780s, Osa became a city, and it became necessary to create a coat of arms. Officials proposed placing a hive with flying bees in the lower part.
The idea arose because Bashkirs lived around the city and were engaged in beekeeping. The Metropolitan Commission on Heraldry made adjustments. The hive was placed on a tree.
Another option with wasp nests was proposed, but it did not correspond to the historical past. In 1988, a new coat of arms was approved in the form of a shield, divided by a blue Kama ribbon into green and red parts.
Later they returned to the old coat of arms - a shield divided in half. On top is a silver bear with the Gospel on the back. At the bottom is a hive on a tree.
