About the history of the city of Miass
A settlement in the vicinity of present-day Miass appeared in 1773, when the enterprising merchant Luginin Larion started the construction of a copper smelter in this area.
Due to the outbreak of the Pugachev People's War, the construction of the plant was significantly delayed. But in August 1777 it started working. Gradually, the copper deposits dried up, and in 1798, Luginin’s heirs sold the enterprise to the treasury. By the middle of the 19th century, the maintenance of the plant became unprofitable, and it was closed.
But the workers' freedom remained. This was facilitated by the development of gold deposits. In the nineteenth century, the entire valley of the Miass River became a huge gold mine.
The most “advanced” mine was the Tsarevo-Alexandrovsky (later Leninsky) mine. Tsar Alexander I came here during his travels around the country.
This mine had no equal in the region in terms of the number and wealth of gold nuggets found. In 1842, craftsman Nikifor Syutkin found here one of the largest nuggets in the world - the “Big Triangle”, weighing 36.21 kg.
Egor Mitrofanovich Simonov, who went from an ordinary prospector to the owner of mines and became the richest man in the city, became widely known and had a prominent position in the city.
Gold mining remained the main city-forming industry in Miass until Soviet times. Under the USSR, other industries were created here.
In 1891, from Miass and Vladivostok simultaneously, towards each other, they began to build the Trans-Siberian Railway. This most famous section of the Trans-Siberian Railway “from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean” was built from 1891 to 1916. In 1903, the first train St. Petersburg - Moscow - Vladivostok passed along the Trans-Siberian Railway. From Moscow to Miass by rail it is exactly 2 thousand kilometers.
City center in the old days
This unique role of Miass in the history of our country is recalled by a memorial sign at the Miass-1 station, erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the start of construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
In December 1919, Miass received city status. In 1923, the local city council was going to rename the city Tukhachevsk - in honor of the famous Red commander Mikhail Tukhachevsky, who took the city into civilian rule. But the authorities rejected this initiative.
In the 1930s, along with gold mining, the city began to seriously develop the timber industry, and then mechanical engineering.
At the end of 1941, automobile production was established on the basis of the workshops of the Stalin Automobile Plant in Miass that were evacuated from the capital. First they produced engines and gearboxes, then ZiS-5 trucks. And after the war, they started producing their own models - the famous Ural trucks.
Defense and rocketry design bureaus in Mashgorodok also became important enterprises.
Since the late 1950s, beautiful roads and sidewalks, well-groomed alleys and squares, flower beds, special design of hotel buildings, a swimming pool, cafes and shops, pine and linden alleys have appeared in this microdistrict of the city. A group of architects received a State Prize for this residential area.
Since the 1970s, a large-panel house-building plant has been operating in the city. In addition to the industrial sector, the resort and sanatorium and tourism sectors began to actively develop (resorts on Lake Turgoyak, ski slopes, tours to the most picturesque places of the Southern Urals).
An annual event that has become widely known is the Ilmen Art Song Festival, which takes place in mid-June.
General information and history of the city
When Pugachev and his army reached the Ural Mountains and needed a place to stay, he sent two warriors, a Russian and a Bashkir, to reconnaissance.
They returned with good news - there is a clean river nearby. When Pugachev asked who was the first to see the river, the Bashkir said: Mi (I - in Bashkir), the Russian replied: Ya-ss. So they called her Miyass. And then they gradually began to say the more familiar Miass for us. This is one of the legends about the origin of the name of the river and the city that stands on it. There are other, more scientific, but less poetic explanations.
Miass
Officially, Miass dates its history back to 1773, when copper smelting appeared here. In 1897, a large gold deposit was discovered in Miass, which immediately gave a new impetus to the development of the settlement. Gold is sought and found here today. Since 1926, Miass has been part of the Chelyabinsk region. During the war, an automobile plant was evacuated here. In 1982, Miass was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and was given the status of a historical settlement.
The total area of the city is 111.9 thousand square kilometers. Time zone – plus 5 hours Greenwich Mean Time, plus 2 hours Moscow time. The coat of arms of Miass shows an elk with inclined antlers.
Museum of Local Lore
The Miass Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest in the Urals. Back in the 19th century, a museum exhibition was set up in one of the rooms of the plant management building. In 1920, the city local history museum was founded in the format of a large cultural institution.
In 1995, the local history museum moved to an old building - the mansion of the wealthy gold miner Simonov, which he had already occupied in the 1920s.
Museum of Local Lore
The exhibition halls of the museum display exhibitions that clearly and interestingly tell about the history of the region since ancient times, about the life of the workers of the Miass plant and their families. The museum collections reflect all aspects of the social and cultural development of Miass and the territories adjacent to this city.
The museum owns not only a remarkable 19th-century building, but also a courtyard and garden. In the summer, this territory becomes an arena for children's master classes, games, quest trips, theatrical and costume events.

Dumpling Museum
The city’s museum is not only interesting, but also delicious, which tells adults and children about the history of the traditional Siberian delicacy, invites them to take part in master classes on making dumplings and, of course, tastings.
The museum exposition tells about forty different types of dishes, which we are accustomed to consider as originally Russian, but which also exist in the culinary traditions of other countries. The exhibition presents models of dumplings from different countries, each of which has its own shape and manufacturing secret.
Dumpling Museum
The museum has existed since 2014, when the empty and decaying ancient building was purchased by a private individual and restored. At the same time, the facade was preserved in its original form.
In the restored house of merchant Smirnov, in addition to the dumpling museum, there is also a family leisure center, craft workshops, a children's theater, a cafe and a sports complex.

New Year's “miracles”: what happened in Miass in the first days of 2022?
The year in Miass began in different ways: with fireworks and festivities, outrage with or without cause, various accidents, regular price increases, but most importantly, with love.
Social networks have become a part of our lives; we cannot live without them even on holidays. So many people celebrated the New Year on social networks: they complained about loud fireworks and a paid skating rink in front of the administration, warned about icy roads, panicked about a utility accident and an allegedly impending terrorist attack, which ultimately ended with a marriage proposal.
Do you like to ride...
After the festive fireworks that lit up the sky on the night of December 31 to January 1, people went to traditional festivities. The ice town is very popular with the administration this year: there are ice and light figures, the House of Santa Claus, a food court, and in general the townspeople like everything... Except perhaps the skating rink.
The skating rink in front of the administration building, organized for the first time this year, caused a wave of criticism on social networks. The bewilderment of the indignant residents was caused by the fact that the skating rink turned out to be paid. A symbolic fee of 150 rubles goes towards filling, sharpening the ice and security; skates are available for rent.
The city administration stated that the creation of the skating rink was not included in the competition documentation for the construction of the ice town. It turned out that the tenant of the plot adjacent to the ice town had asked for its organization. The administration had no grounds for refusal.
Of course, this is not the only place in the city for ice skating. In Miass, skating rinks are traditionally organized at the Trud stadium and two sports complexes in the machine town. Several more sites are flooded with activists, enthusiasts and entrepreneurs. However, this does not increase the popularity of the newly created skating rink before the administration, nor does it reduce popular indignation...
Left the "shores"
January 1 is considered to be the hardest day in the new year; lovers of wild fun on New Year's Eve will not let you lie. But the second day of 2022 turned out to be difficult for road services. An accident at the collector in the PATO area led to flooding of the Turgoyak highway with sewage.
As the Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Department said, the accident occurred on the territory of one of the enterprises located in the industrial zone. The search for this enterprise took some time, but this turned out to be not the only problem: getting into the territory turned out to be a difficult task. It was only possible to provide access for emergency services on the morning of January 3.
The accident was completely eliminated, and the collector was cleaned. After this, road services cleared the road of water and ice.
Dangerous swing
Unfortunately, this is not the only accident over the holiday weekend. This winter is somehow very hesitantly coming into its own. The weather forecast is like a carousel: first, almost global warming is coming, after which frosts are approaching again, and so on in a circle. Due to temperature changes and snowfall, severe icy conditions formed on the roads. According to the State Emergency Service, road equipment worked in intensive mode, but this could not protect everyone from accidents on the roads.
So, on January 2, an accident occurred on the second kilometer of the Miass-Zlatoust highway. A 66-year-old driver driving a Chevrolet Niva lost control. The car skidded and was thrown into the oncoming lane, where it crashed into a BMW X1 driven by a 34-year-old man. As a result of the accident, the passengers of the Chevrolet - a 60-year-old man and two children aged nine and seven - were injured and were hospitalized.
A fatal accident occurred on January 3 on the Turgoyak highway. The 47-year-old driver of a Hyundai drove off the road to the right and crashed into an electrical pole. The man died on the spot from his injuries. A 60-year-old passenger in the car was hospitalized. The State Traffic Safety Inspectorate noted that the driver had driving experience since 1991 and was not brought to administrative responsibility.
We can only hope that the weather will return to normal soon. In the meantime, weather forecasters are again predicting warming by the end of the holiday week. And this is after frost...
Romantic or terrorist?
Social networks are no longer only a platform for discussing everything in the world, but also a place where surprises are organized. A resident of Miass decided to take an important step in his life - marriage. He approached the matter seriously and creatively, and decided to find helpers through social networks to arrange a surprise. The young man planned to distribute smoke bombs, sparklers, signal torches and fireworks to everyone after the girl's answer. In the background there is car music and fireworks exploding in the sky.
There are still romantics in our time, some decided, others wished the future newlyweds happiness, and still others added a fly in the ointment to this ointment. Some residents found this whole action too suspicious, so they decided that the young man was gathering people in one place to carry out a terrorist act. Fortunately, all the misunderstandings were resolved, and the surprise was a great success. The girl answered “yes,” and the video of the sensational surprise was published online.
These are the prices...
One thing the coming year will definitely not please is the next increase in prices. According to Russian investment analysts, prices will rise for food, cars and household appliances.
Meat, eggs, vegetables and cereals will rise in price by about 10%. However, by autumn prices for cereals and some vegetables may decline. This depends on whether harvests return to pre-pandemic levels.
Due to logistics problems, imported products will be susceptible to inflation. Thus, cargo carriers plan to increase prices for their services by 15-25%. Prices for cars and household appliances will increase, but, according to experts, not much - around 5.5-6.5%.
By the way, prices will increase not only for cars. From January 1, 2022, train fares have increased. The Sverdlovsk suburban company, which organizes short-distance transportation, explained the change in prices by rising inflation. Now a ticket for the Lastochka high-speed train, which runs between Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk, costs not 800, but 920 rubles. Prices have also been increased in the Sverdlovsk, Tyumen, Kurgan regions and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
Let us remind you that in Miass the price of public transport will increase from February. The price of a bus ticket will increase to 23 rubles (currently 18), and luggage transportation will cost the same. On commuter buses, 2.3 rubles will cost one kilometer of travel, but a ticket in general cannot cost less than 23 rubles. The monthly ticket price will increase by 200 rubles (up to 950). Preferential travel with a social card will cost the passenger 13 rubles (previously it was 10). Travel by trolleybus is proposed to be made somewhat cheaper than by bus - 19 rubles per trip (now 15), travel and discount tickets - at the same prices as on buses.

State Missile Museum
The Museum of the History of the State Missile Center named after Academician Makeev was organized in the 90s, and people began to talk openly about the missile center as one of the enterprises of the country’s defense complex.
State Missile Museum
It is located, among other things, on the premises of the former office of the first general designer, Academician Makeev, which in itself is very valuable. In three exhibition halls, models of various rockets are displayed, clearly demonstrating the rich history of the GRC.

Districts and real estate of Miass
Miass is a very elongated city. Officially, it is divided into five administrative districts: Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western and Central. Naturally, no one calls them that in everyday life. If you ask about the division of the city on its streets, they will tell you, first of all, three main parts: the Old Town, the Automobile Plant and Mashgorodok.
Mashgorodok
The most educated and intelligent part is considered to be Mashgorodok (founded in 1959 for the technical intelligentsia of the Miass Machine-Building Plant and the Makeev State Rocket Center). However, residents of other parts of the city consider her snobbish and arrogant.
One of the pleasant features of Mashgorodok is the complete absence of poplars, so familiar to any city. Linden trees, rowan trees, birch trees, lilacs - and no poplar fluff in the summer. In addition, it’s only a 15-20 minute walk from Mashgorodok to Lake Turgoyak.
Mashgorodok
Old city
The Old Town is the historical part of the city, a completely unprestigious place to live. This is mainly the private sector. The houses here have their own characteristics: a stone ground floor and a wooden upper floor. Many of them are protected as historical monuments, for example, the house of gold miner Simonov, built in an eclectic style in the second half of the 19th century.
Old city. Simonov's mansion
Automobile plant
The automobile plant is the real center of the city. The city administration, tax office, prosecutor's office, pension fund, etc. are located in this area. The only shopping and entertainment center is located here. It really looks like an elephant because of the porch with a canopy that resembles an elephant's trunk.
TRC Elephant
Each of the three main parts of the city has its own Orthodox church. There is no mosque, despite the fact that the Muslim population is represented in sufficient numbers.
It is necessary to note several more areas of the city that are not included in the main parts. The village of Stroiteley is located between Avtozavod and Mashgorodok. It was built in the 50s by mobilized sailors, so the names of the streets poetically recall the expanses of water: Amurskaya, Sevastopolskaya, Kerchenskaya, Nakhimovskaya. The Miass branch of the Chelyabinsk Classical University is located in the village of Stroiteley.
The villages of Vostochny and Melentyevka are entirely private sector. The village of Dynamo was successfully built on a hillock, fifteen minutes from the central part of the city and at the same time completely separate. Polikarpovsky Pond was once a clean drinking pond, with water lilies and lilies. But today only extreme sports enthusiasts can risk swimming in it.
Cottage villages located in urban areas deserve special attention. Firstly, Turgoyak. Initially, the village existed as an ordinary village, but gradually turned into a real kingdom of houses with turrets and elaborate facades, expensive mansions, palaces, etc. Many of them function as mini-hotels. The most expensive real estate is here, despite the fact that between the new palaces there are still unsightly houses with crumbling fences. Their residents do not want to sell their huts even for big money.
One of the houses in the village of Turgoyak
Secondly, Forest Village. It is located not far from Mashgorodok, turn left before reaching it two or three hundred meters. The cost of elite cottages there reaches 17 - 20 million rubles.
The areas of townhouses in Komarovo (Avtozavod) and at the end of Mashgorodok are also considered an elite residential area. The cost of a townhouse with a plot of 6 acres, all communications are central, with a landscaped, fenced territory of the complex, in rough finishing - from 6.5 million rubles.
In the background is Komarovo
Buying an apartment in Mashgorodok today is much more expensive than at the Avtozavod or in another part of the city.
Memorial "Grieving Mother"
The memorial sculptural group, installed in memory of those killed on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, was installed on November 4, 1967 on the main square of Miass, next to the administration building.
The square is framed by a semicircular wall of 150 marble slabs, with the names of fellow countrymen who died in the war engraved on them. In the center there is a stele with an outline of a warrior carved on stone, a sculpture of the Sorrowful Mother and the Eternal Flame.
Memorial "Grieving Mother"
Over the years, to the plates with the names of those killed in the Great Patriotic War, the names of those killed in Afghanistan, then in Chechnya, were also added. A monument to the victims of political repression, a monument to the dead border guards, and to all the soldiers of the city who died in the line of duty, wherever.

IN AND. Lenin is an honorary whipper
The monument to the leader of the revolution, the founder of the USSR was laid on the territory of the Miass sawmill on January 27, 1924 - the day of the official farewell to Lenin.
IN AND. Lenin is an honorary whipper
This is due to the fact that on May 1, 1923, at a general meeting of workers, the chairman of the trade union committee proposed making Lenin an honorary member of the factory team. Until the collapse of the USSR (1991), Ilyich was officially listed in the plant’s staff as a 3rd category worker: he was a member of the trade union, he received a salary that went towards organizing cultural events, for children’s recreation, and during the war years - for the needs of the Red Army. Childlessness tax was deducted from “Lenin’s salary” and trade union dues were paid. The plant was equipped with a “Leninist workplace”, where it was considered an honor to work.

The most attractive places to stay in the vicinity of Miass
You can have a good rest near the city.
Not all Miass residents were able to have a good rest during the abnormally hot July, but you can still have time to do this in August. And it is not at all necessary to go to Turkey or other countries open to tourists, especially since the epidemiological situation there remains difficult.
August in the Urals is the time to enjoy the natural beauty. Even bad weather will not spoil the impressions of visiting mountains, forests and caves.
Read about where to go “for the fog and the smell of the taiga” in the vicinity of Miass.
Kaolin quarry near Kyshtym.
A flooded quarry in the vicinity of the village of Kaolinovy in the Chelyabinsk region, where kaolin, a type of white clay, was mined. Because of the azure-turquoise water, this quarry was called “Ural Bali”. In sunny weather, the azure water looks especially colorful, and the amazingly white clay shores effectively complement the landscape. Drive in the direction of Kyshtym. Pass the village of Kaolinovy, before entering Kyshtym (landmark - railway crossing) there will be a right turn onto a dirt road, follow the signs.
Chashkovsky ridge.
The Chashkovsky ridge is not high: its greatest height is 580 meters (Mount Golukha). There are granite remains here, forming bizarre figures. Many resemble animals, human faces, and buildings. The figures are believed to be about 500 million years old. The easiest way to get there is from the village of Chernovskoye. The forest road begins at the end of the village; here you need to park your car and walk through the forest for about three kilometers.
Reserve "Taganay".
Valuable ecological systems - mountain tundras and meadows, subalpine woodlands and relict forests - have been preserved almost untouched in the park. The high areas of Taganay are composed of quartzites. The reserve is located in the Zlatoust region. The central estate can be reached by bus or minibus: from the railway station, minibuses No. 28, 29, from the bus station, minibuses No. 29, bus No. 15, stop “Bely Klyuch Store” (Pushkinsky village).
Ustinovsky Canyon.
The picturesque Ustinovsky Canyon is located in the forest-steppe, where such steep cliffs above the river are rare. The Ustinovsky limestones stretch for about one kilometer in length. Easily accessible along the M5 highway, through the village of Chernovskoye. Move towards Ustinovo, after 6.5 kilometers turn right, then straight ahead for about 2.5 kilometers.
Zyuratkul National Park.
Zyuratkul National Park has a unique climate and is located at the junction of two natural zones - steppe and taiga, as well as at the meeting point of two continents - Europe and Asia. The park is home to red-listed plants and relict animals. The national park is located about 30 kilometers from Satka. Along the M5 highway from Chelyabinsk to the Satkinsky district, then, almost reaching Satka, we turn left following the sign for the village of Magnitsky, pass the village and go up along the serpentine road.
Kialim Reservoir and Kialim Dam.
The reservoir itself is small, but the places are very beautiful - mountains, pine trees, clear water. There are a lot of mushrooms in the forests in autumn. You can get there via the Karabash-Miass highway: turn to the village of Kialim, and from there get to the eastern and northern shores of the reservoir.
Bazhov Park.
In 2015, the “Mountain Park named after. P.P. Bazhov”, “populated” by the characters of the famous Ural storyteller. Guests of the park can not only meet the heroes of fairy tales, but also visit the cultural complex “Bell Tower with the Chapel of St. John Chrysostom”, admire the view of the city, a nine-meter waterfall made of natural stone, and also visit the room-museums of history and craft art. The village of Krasnaya Gorka is located 4 kilometers from the center of Zlatoust. You can get here by car in just 5–10 minutes, or by public transport, stop “Krasnaya Gorka Village”.
Amusement park "Sonkina Lagoon".
An open-air amusement park with a water park in Satka. On the territory of the complex there is a medieval castle; on the opposite side there is a pirate fortress with a pier, from which you can go on a trip to the fortress island. It’s easy to get to: the park is located in the city of Satka, on Bocharova Street.
Sanctuary "Big Allaki".
Located on Lake Bolshiye Allaki. Fishermen here catch bream, pike, perch, ruffe, roach, tench, crucian carp, ide, dace, and whitefish. In summer there are a lot of vacationers on the lake. And 50 meters from the water, on a hill, there are 14 huge stone blocks, which are called “stone tents” or “ancient sanctuary”, where there are ancient drawings. In the center between the remains there is a sacrificial stone, on which sacrificial rituals were performed in ancient times. Along the Yekaterinburg - Chelyabinsk highway, then turn at the sign for the village of Krasny Partizan. You need to completely drive through the village, then turn right on its outskirts; a dirt road through the field will lead to the Big Allaki sanctuary.
Monument to the Chelyabinsk meteorite.
On February 15, 2013, a meteorite “hit” Chelyabinsk. The celestial body exploded in the air, and its numerous fragments scattered across the area. The largest part of the meteorite fell to the bottom of Lake Chebarkul. The memorial stele is located on the western shore of Lake Chebarkul, on the territory of the Parus yacht club.
Monument to those killed during the Civil War
This memorial was erected in 1957 at a mass grave where Red Guards who died in the battles for the liberation of the city from Kolchak were buried, as well as Soviet activists shot during the White Terror.
Monument to those killed during the Civil War
The monument stands on a square concrete platform and is approached by a wide flight of stairs. On three sides of the stele there are marble memorial slabs with the names of the 97 victims.
Address: Southern District of Miass, Revolution Square.

The Old Believer community existed in Miass from the very foundation of the city. In 1895, when the government made some relaxations in the legislation in relation to the Old Believers, the city residents built a stone church, but without a cross at the top. In 1936, it was taken from the believers and adapted for a printing house, and then dismantled. Services were held in a prayer house on Berezovskaya Street. The current temple was built in 1995-1999.

Miass then and now: how the city has changed
There was a garment factory on this site during the Soviet years. Now there is a shopping complex here, and the façade of the building is “decorated” with signs of the premises’ tenants. In total, almost four dozen organizations are located on 3 floors of the building.
City House of Culture, st. Proletarskaya, 12
Once upon a time, this building housed the trading house of the merchant Bakakin.
It is worth noting that the building has almost completely preserved its original appearance - only the closed windows indicate that trade is no longer carried out in this beautiful historical building. The Bakakin trading house was built in 1829. The building was distinguished by its sophistication in architectural design. Built in the Art Nouveau style, it looked very modern for its time: huge windows without frames, richly decorated with stucco, supporting console frames, carved doors, and the elegant completion of the building - a lattice with Art Nouveau ornaments.
Production premises, st. Proletarskaya, 1
Zharov's house was built in the Art Nouveau style; this style is characteristic of almost all houses of old Miass. Before the Revolution, there was a store on the ground floor of the building, and the living rooms of the family of the merchant Zharov on the second. The façade of the building has been preserved.
Shopping center, st. Lenina, 2
Once upon a time there was a trading house of the Elabuga merchant Stakheev. Built on the site of a wooden building of the Volost Administration in 1912 (the date of construction is carved on an iron weather vane mounted on the turret). It is especially gratifying that it has survived to this day in its original form. Only now there is a shopping center with signs of tenants renting retail space in this building.
Residential building with shops on the ground floor, Avtozavodtsev Ave., 26
The house was built back in Stalin's times. At that time, active development of this part of Miass took place. Now people still live in the house, and there are shops on the ground floor.
Church of the Life-Giving Trinity, Oktyabrya Ave., 3
The church, founded in May 1887, at the Miass cemetery, was built with donations from Miass merchants and industrialists (N. F. Belyaev, M. P. Populovsky, E. M. Simonov, G. P. Mozzhukhin, P. V. Dunaev) . In December 1889, the church was consecrated. In 1896, a bell tower was added to the donations of the Romanovsky sisters. The cemetery church had a narrow purpose: the funeral ceremony was held there. A small square church with two aisles - northern and western, with an adjacent bell tower, was made of red bricks During the Soviet years, this church was the only one functioning in Miass.
