Story
Historically, the entire territory of the region depended on the Novgorod Republic and was annexed by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the 15th-16th centuries. The southern part of the region was the scene of fighting and often changed hands before landing in Poland towards the end of the 16th century. December 29 [OPERATING SYSTEMS. December 18], 1708 Tsar Peter the Great issued a decree that established seven provinces.[4][5] No description of provincial boundaries is provided; instead, their territory was defined as the collection of cities and the lands adjacent to those cities. The current territory of the Pskov region was part of the Ingermanland province, which was renamed. St. Petersburg province in 1710. The governorates were divided into counties and counties into volosts. In 1727, the Novgorod province was founded. It was divided into five regions, and the current territory of the Novgorod region was divided between two of them - Pskov and Velikiye Luki. In 1772, after the First Partition of Poland, vast territories that previously belonged to Poland were annexed by Russia, and to accommodate them, the Pskov Governorate, with its center in Opochka, as well as the Pskov and Velikoluksky regions, with the exception of Gdovsky district, were transferred to the Pskov Governorate . The entire current territory of the Pskov region belonged to the Pskov province, with the exception of the territories that currently belong to the Gdovsky, Plyussky and Strugo-Krasnensky districts. They belonged to the province of St. Petersburg. [6] Porkhovsky district Until 1776 it belonged to the Novgorod province, then it was transferred to the Pskov province.
The Pskov province turned out to be too large for proper administration, and in 1776 a decree of Empress Catherine the Great was issued. He divided the province into Pskov and Polotsk provinces. Pskov became the administrative center of the Pskov province. In 1777, the Pskov province was transformed into the Pskov governorship. In 1796, the governorship was abolished, and Emperor Paul I issued a decree restoring the Pskov province.[6]
The south of the Pskov region was transferred to the Polotsk province, which in 1777 became the Polotsk governorship. In 1796, the governorship was abolished, and the territory was transferred to the Belarusian province; from 1802 to Vitebsk province. After 1919, the Vitebsk province was part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.[7] In 1924, the Vitebsk province was abolished, and Sebezh, Nevelsk and Velizh districts were transferred to the Pskov province.
In 1920, the Tartu Peace Treaty established the border between Russia and independent Estonia, and the territories that now make up the Pechora region, together with the city of Pechora, were transferred to Estonia. In the same year, the Treaty of Riga established the border between Russia and Latvia, part of the Pskov province was transferred to Latvia.
On August 1, 1927, during the administrative reform, the Pskov and St. Petersburg provinces were abolished, and all territories that currently belonged to the Pskov region and then belonged to the Soviet Union became part of the Leningrad region. The region was divided into districts, and the current territory of the Pskov region was divided between Pskov and Velikiye Luki. On June 17, 1929, the Velikoluksky District was transferred to the Western Region, a huge administrative unit with its center in Smolensk. In 1930, the districts were also abolished, and the districts were directly subordinated to the regions. In 1935, the northern part of the Western Region was transferred to the newly created Kalinin Region. The territories that now make up the Usvyatsky district and the southern part of the Kuniinsky district remained in the Western region until its abolition in 1937, after which they were transferred to the Smolensk region.[8]
In the summer of 1941, during the Second World War, the current area of the Pskov region was occupied by German troops. Most of it was not liberated until the summer of 1944. After liberation, the administrative division of the Soviet Union was significantly changed. On August 22, 1944, the Velikiye Luki region was founded with its center in Velikiye Luki, and the next day, on August 23, 1944, the Pskov region was formed. In 1945, part of the territories was transferred from the Estonian and Latvian SSR to the Pskov region and formed three districts: Pechora, Pytalovsky and Kachanovsky district. Together, the Pskov and Velikoluksk regions now included all the territories that currently make up the Pskov region. On October 2, 1957, the Velikiye Luki region was abolished and divided between the Pskov and Kalinin regions. As of October 1957, the Pskov region also included the Kholmsky and Ploskoshsky districts, which in July 1958 were transferred to the Novgorod and Kalinin regions, respectively.
In the mid-1960s, the region underwent an interrupted Khrushchev administrative reform, when the districts were first divided into large agro-industrial districts, and a few years later they were abolished, and the region received a district structure somewhat different from the previous one. reform.

Map of the Pskov region with cities and villages
The capital of the region, Pskov, has the title of “city of military glory.” More than 200 thousand people live here, and the main industrial enterprises and main attractions are located here. The hallmark of the settlement is the Pskov Kremlin, the location of which is shown on a map of the Pskov region with cities and villages. Also, tourists coming to the region tend to visit ancient fortresses in the cities:
- Izborsk;
- Porkhov;
- Gdov.
The Pskov land is famous for its large number of monasteries and shrines, to which several tens of thousands of pilgrims flock every year. By zooming in on the map of the Pskov region with villages, you will find the location:
- Pskov-Pechora Monastery;
- Convent of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Snetogorsk;
- Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral;
- Nikandrova desert.
Ethnic tourism is developed in the region. You can visit the ethnographic museum of the Seto people, which is located in the village of Sigovo, or get acquainted with the history and small inhabitants in settlements near Izborsk.
There are a large number of recreation centers in the region, which are located on the banks of rivers. Local reservoirs are distinguished by a variety of valuable fish species. Here you can catch pike, catfish or bream. Fishermen come to these places both in summer and winter.
