Balabanovo is a city (since 1972, Subordination: district) in the Borovsky district of the Kaluga region. Population 23.4 thousand people (2009). Located in the northern part of the Kaluga region, 96 km from Moscow along the M3 highway. Now it has the status of an urban settlement of the municipal formation of Balabanovo. The total area of the city is 993.6 hectares, of which 64 hectares are forest lands. The length from west to east is 3.3 kilometers, from north to south - 3.2 kilometers.
On the lands of the municipality there are 10 military units, which are consolidated into the Balabanovsky garrison.
The city is located in the interfluve of the Protva (tributary of the Oka), Istya (tributary of the Nara) and Stradalovka, 76 km northeast of Kaluga and 96 km southwest of Moscow. The Moscow-Bryansk-Kyiv M3 federal highway, the Moscow Big Ring (second concrete road) A108, and the Moscow-Kyiv railway pass through the territory of Balabanovo. The city has the Balabanovo railway station of the Kyiv direction of the Moscow Railway.
Brief historical background
In 1947, at the XI Party Conference, a decision was made to build a mechanical plant for a match factory in the village, but during construction the plant was retrained into a match factory, which happened in 1952. The same year was marked by the opening of a brick factory, which began to operate at full capacity and around the clock. In 1954, in connection with the liquidation of machine-building stations, the lands of the collective farm were transferred to the Vorsino state farm, which was also the liquidation of the collective farm in Balabanov. City status was granted on June 12, 1972.
In 1993, construction began on a temple in honor of John of Kronstadt. In November 1996, the city of Balabanov acquired the status of Municipal Entity “City of Balabanovo”.

Coat of arms
The coat of arms of the municipal formation "City of Balabanovo" MO MR "Borovsky District" is the official symbol of the city, approved by decision No. 15 of the City Duma on February 18, 2000 and entered into the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation with the assignment of registration number 635.
Borovskaya land, on which the city of Balabanovo is located, was annexed to the Moscow Principality in 1382 and served, among other things, as a recreation and hunting place for the Grand Dukes. There is Falcon Hill and Falcon Mountain, indicating that it was in these surroundings that princely falconry took place. “Saker falcons” are a genus of hunting falcons that gave the name to the modern city, transformed over time into Balabanovo.

Balabanovo
The city has four secondary schools, seven kindergartens, an art school, a branch of the Center for Social Pedagogy, two libraries (city and children's), a branch of the Moscow State Pedagogical University and the Balabanovo Educational College. Since February 1998, a branch of the Moscow State Humanitarian University has been operating in the city of Balabanovo. M. A. Sholokhova. The main enterprises of Balabanovo are the match factory "Plitspichprom" (General Director V.G. Shpakovsky), a brick factory, a paper packaging plant of the Finnish company Stora Enso, a window frame factory (LLC "ForaGazprom"), which is part of the Finnish Ruukki concern.
