Dostoevsky Memorial Day was celebrated in Staraya Russa
Today, February 9, marks 141 years since the death of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky. In Staraya Russa, where the writer spent several summer seasons and one winter, working on “Pushkin’s Speech”, the novels “Demons”, “Teenager”, “The Brothers Karamazov”, events dedicated to Dostoevsky Memorial Day were held.
In the church of St. St. George the Victorious, the dean of the Starorussian district, Archpriest Ambrosy, served a memorial service for the writer. Dostoevsky was a parishioner of this church; an icon in front of which he loved to pray was preserved here.
Admirers of the writer’s work laid flowers at his monument on the banks of Malashka. As Dostoevsky’s wife Anna Grigorievna recalled, Fyodor Mikhailovich often wandered along the banks of this small river, pondering the plots of his future works.
— Staraya Russa became a place of creativity and moral relaxation for Dostoevsky, he wrote about this in his letters to friends. It is no coincidence that it was here that the Dostoevskys purchased a house for themselves, which they themselves called a “family nest”; here their son Alyosha was born,” Sergei Sharakov, a leading employee of the branch of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve “Dostoevsky Museums” in Staraya Russa, told the participants of the memorial ceremony.
“The life and work of this great writer are for us, Old Russians, an example of deep work on ourselves; they encourage every moral person to think about their actions. We are grateful to providence that the Lord once brought the writer to our city. We honor his memory and transform Staraya Russa in order to preserve the “era of Dostoevsky” in the historical part of the city, the spirit that once gave the writer the strength to create,” said the head of the Starorussky district, Alexander Rozbaum.
On this day, the Museum of the Novel “The Brothers Karamazov” hosted a presentation of two publications donated by the Tobolsk Revival charitable foundation. The first one arrived at Staraya Russa a year ago and first appeared before museum visitors on March 10 during the opening of the Orthodox Book Days. It was a facsimile edition of Dostoevsky's Gospel.
The second edition is “Dostoevsky F.M. The rebirth of my beliefs” - a delegation from Siberia donated it to the museum today, on the writer’s Memorial Day.
— The publication was prepared on the basis of three letters from Fyodor Mikhailovich, sent from exile in Siberia, now stored in the collections of the Russian State Library: a letter to his brother Mikhail, a letter to Apollo Nikolaevich Maykov and a letter to Natalya Dmitrievna Fonvizina, the wife of the Decembrist M.A. Fonvizin (it was from the wives of the Decembrists at the transit point on the way to hard labor that Dostoevsky received the very Gospel that accompanied him all his life until his death). The publication is designed in the form of a box made of polished wood with laser engraving of an ancient map of Western Siberia, which marks the cities in which Fyodor Mikhailovich served hard labor and exile,” said Arkady Elfimov, chairman of the Tyumen regional public charitable foundation “Revival of Tobolsk”.
According to many researchers, in these letters the writer formed his own “creed”, in which everything is clear and sacred to him: “if someone proved to me that Christ is outside the truth, and it really were that the truth is outside Christ, then I would be better off.” I would like to stay with Christ rather than with the truth.”
Facsimile reproductions of Dostoevsky's letters are placed in folders with his portrait and transcripts of the manuscripts. On the front of the folders there is a die-cut in the shape of a prison window - a reference to the design of the previously presented "Dostoevsky's Gospel", dressed in a box in the form of a prison cell.
Arkady Elfimov noted that printing such facsimile publications and transferring them to Dostoevsky museums throughout the country would be impossible without patrons. One of them came to Staraya Russa along with the Siberians - Alexey Ustinov, vice-president of a foreign corporation for the production of diesel engines (Brussels).
— Today, during a sermon in church, I heard from the priest the idea that the main preacher of Russia abroad is not modern politicians, but Dostoevsky. And this couldn’t be more accurate than reality. According to my observations, Dostoevsky is read most of all in the USA. Those people who have read at least one work by Fyodor Mikhailovich become kinder. They have awakened their conscience, they begin to look at the world differently. And it seems to me that this is precisely what gives us hope that we will be able to overcome all the difficulties of our time,” said Alexey Ustinov.
Today, in another Old Russian museum - the memorial House-Museum of the writer on the banks of the Pererytitsa, where the Dostoevsky family lived - a presentation of the exhibition “The World of Dostoevsky” from the collection of the State Historical, Artistic and Literary Museum-Reserve “Abramtsevo” took place. This exhibition presents graphic works by artists Vitaly Goryaev and Kirill Mamonov, created based on the novels by F.M. Dostoevsky.
