History of Kungur
Kungur has the status of a historical city of the Russian Federation. The year of its foundation is considered to be 1648, although there is an opinion that the first settlers appeared here a quarter of a century earlier. The Bashkir uprising, which occurred in these places due to the infringement of the interests of local residents by the authorities, destroyed the city.
Many townspeople were killed, houses and outbuildings were destroyed. In 1663, with the permission of the king, Kungur began to be built anew, but in a slightly different place. The new fort was surrounded by a 6.5 m wall, and 8 watchtowers were built.
Kungur, unlike neighboring Ural cities, grew not around factories and mines, but through trade operations. Merchant mansions that have survived to this day speak of the former wealth of Kungur, located on major trade routes.
Merchants from all over the Urals, Siberia, and Central Russia came to Kungur fairs and bazaars. In the 19th century, it was recognized as the “tea capital” of the Russian Empire. More than 80% of tea transactions were carried out in Kungur.
Soviet power was established here in 1917. As a result of brutal fighting and repression, many people died on both warring sides. In subsequent years, industry began to develop in the city, which in 1941 was transferred to the production of military products. 25 thousand citizens were called to the front. Today there are no city-forming enterprises in Kungur.
Most residents are engaged in individual entrepreneurship:
- in the processing of agricultural products;
- in leather and footwear production;
- at a furniture factory;
- in a garment factory;
- in the production of musical instruments.
Kungur, which has preserved its ancient appearance, unique architectural monuments, natural beauty and historical attractions, attracts an increasing number of tourists. There are already about 50 thousand people a year. This is a significant source of income for the city budget.
Art Museum
The art museum was opened in 2006. It is located in the mansion of the Kungur merchants Yukhnevs, built in 1908 (Oktyabrskaya St., 21). The halls of the museum display art ceramics, products made of soft ornamental stone and products of the Kungur artel named after. XVIII party conference, as well as paintings by Russian painters of the twentieth century. The stone-cutting collection includes works by the most famous artists and craftsmen of the 20th century, representatives of the Kungur stone-cutting school: A. F. Butakov, A. E. Popov, M. G. Lisunov, S. N. Chekhomov, A. I. Shadrin, A. Y. Shiryaeva, G. M. Kovaleva, A. M. Ovchinnikova, S. S. Krivoshchekova, A. V. Ovchinnikova, S. O. Nechaeva, F. P. Ovchinnikova, Yu. S. Krivoshchekova. Looking at these exhibits, one can admire for a long time not only their artistic perfection, but also the beauty of the material: translucent, as if glowing from within, selenite, multi-colored gypsum, sometimes black, sometimes gray soapstone. It also displays products by unknown authors of the first half of the 20th century: a herd of elephants, which were given “for good luck”, writing instruments, boxes, a tray in the shape of a horseshoe. The collection of Kungur ceramics reflects the diversity of local ceramic production from the late 19th to early 21st centuries. These include peasant pottery, stove tiles, and products from local semi-faience factories and factories at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The products of the Kungur Art Products Factory and its successor, Kungur Folk Crafts LLC, are distinguished by their variety of shapes and richness of color solutions. And the funny ceramic figurines created by the artist E.V. Malkov will bring a smile to the faces of both children and adults. For many visitors, a meeting with childhood is an acquaintance with the collection of products of the artel named after. XVIII party conference. Even twenty years ago, such plaster sculptures as “Mistress of the Copper Mountain”, “Vasily Terkin”, “Old Man Hottabych” could be seen far beyond the borders of Kungur.
Religious buildings of Kungur
Since its foundation, Kungur has always been considered the center of Orthodox culture in the Urals. He remains so to this day. There are several Orthodox churches built here from different times, which are of interest as places of worship, as well as exquisite architectural structures. Not long ago, believers professing Islam built a mosque.
Tikhvin Temple
The history of the temple began in the 17th century during the restoration of Kungur after the devastation of the Bashkir uprising. A petition was submitted to the king to create a convent in the new city, and after receiving approval, construction began.
In 1761, the monastery was transferred to Yekaterinburg, and the remaining buildings, the main one among which was the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, became a city parish.
Reconstruction, renovation of buildings, construction of a 70-meter bell tower at the end of the 19th century was financed by local merchants Dubinin and Gubkin. Interesting fact: immediately after construction, the bell tower tilted 3.50 and remains in this state to this day.
The temple operated until 1935, after which it was closed. But the building was well preserved, thanks to the fact that a children's city cinema was opened within its walls, the director of which promptly resolved all economic and administrative issues. The cinema was considered the best in the Perm region.
The restoration of the temple began in 2000 with the repair of the bell tower and roof, and after the cinema moved to another premises, a complete overhaul was carried out. In Kamensk-Uralsk, 11 bells were cast, which sounded over the city in 2004. After 4 years, a new iconostasis appeared here. Now the Tikhvin Church is more than 260 years old, its address is: st. Sitnikova, 52.
Transfiguration Church
Until 1770, on the site where the Transfiguration Church stands today, there was a small Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, built at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1763, construction of a two-story stone temple began next to it with money and under the leadership of merchants Khlebnikov and Zyryanov. The church was quite large and, together with the bell tower, formed a beautiful and majestic ensemble.
It was closed in 1929, the premises were used for educational institutions. The church was returned to believers in 1994; it took 10 years to restore it. Today it is a functioning temple.
All Saints Church
Outside the city of Kungur on Ice Mountain in 1844, a place was chosen for the construction of a new Church of All Saints. The initiators, financiers and builders were the merchants Fomin and Shmakov. The consecrated temple was assigned to the Holy Transfiguration Church; all residents of the city came here for prayer services. At the beginning of the war, the church was closed, but two years later services resumed here.
The church is small, built with a cross. The architectural solution is mixed, classicism plus eclecticism. There is a Sunday school here.
Temples, cathedrals and churches of Kungur
Most of the temples in Kungur were built during its heyday. In the 18th-19th centuries it was the trading center of the Urals and the tea capital of Russia.
Temple of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God
- Address: st. Sitnikova, 50.
The stone St. John's Church was erected in 1758. It first belonged to the local women's monastery of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. The main church chapel was installed after 5 years. It was named after the heavenly patroness of the monastery. By this time the monastery was abolished, and the church became a parish church. The church, named after its main chapel, began to be called Tikhvinskaya.
In 1882, the old bell tower and refectory were dismantled. With these works the reconstruction of the temple began. The church acquired a Jacob's chapel and a new, 70-meter bell tower. The reconstruction of the temple was carried out with donations from merchants Dubinin and Gubkin.
The Tikhvin Church is distinguished by the Gothic style of its three-tier bell tower. The cathedral was the first in the city to use beetle ornaments to decorate it.
Before the October Revolution, the main shrine of the temple was the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. Legends say that with her help the city was miraculously saved during the assault by Pugachev’s troops. Kungur is the only settlement in these places that the rebels could not take. After 1917, trace of the icon was lost.
Assumption Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- Address: st. Lenina, 38.
The first Assumption Church has been known since 1716. In its place, after a fire occurred in 1750, they began to build a stone church. Construction work was completed by 1755. Then the right side of the temple was consecrated in the name of Stephen the Great. The main building of the cathedral was consecrated 6 years later. The church had five domes and stood for almost a century.
Since 1850, a period of reconstruction began in the Assumption Church. The first to be built was a chapel in the name of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary. It was consecrated in 1854. Construction was carried out with the money of merchants Yukhnev and Kuznetsov.
In 1863, the parishioners decided to rebuild the western part of the church. Also, on their initiative, a new bell tower was laid. In 871, work on the reconstruction of the temple was completely completed. The bell tower rose 60 meters up. Both the old and new buildings had massive spiers, making them look alike. At the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, the Assumption Church was considered the richest in the city.
Religious persecution, the Patriotic War, and the post-war years left their mark on church history and on the appearance of the temple. The Assumption Cathedral is being restored. In 2015, the Great Dome and cross were erected. 4 more domes are being manufactured. All of them are exact copies of the previous decoration of the Assumption Church.
St. Nicholas Church
- Address: st. Gogol, 5.
On the site of the cemetery chapel, in 1773, construction of a stone church began. The Cold Church in the name of John the Baptist was consecrated in 1787. The chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, consecrated 5 years later, was made suitable for service at any time of the year.
St. Nicholas Church has never been distinguished by its splendor of decoration and architectural forms. Its bell tower was also low. They repeatedly wanted to rebuild the temple because of its small capacity and the cold St. John's side chapel.
Reconstruction began in 1873. During perestroika, 4 new domes were installed on the main building of the temple, a new Nikolaevsky chapel was erected (1874), and a new bell tower began to be built. Internal work was completed in 1878. It was then that the renovated church was consecrated.
Another restructuring was carried out in 1894-1903. On the site of the old Church of St. John the Baptist, 3 chapels were built at once - in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Alexy and the main one, in honor of St. John the Baptist.
The Church became St. Nicholas because of 2 chapels in the name of St. Nicholas. After the revolutionary events of 1917, the temple gradually began to decline. Services finally ceased in 1931. During Soviet rule, all church paintings were lost, and the interior of the temple was remodeled.
St. Nicholas Church returned to the fold of the church in 1990. In 1996, new bells were cast for it. The temple is an active religious site.
All Saints Church
- Address: st. Communes, 119.
In the 19th century, the city cemetery was located outside the settlement. It was located on Ice Mountain, where it was decided to build the Church of All Saints. The temple was built at the expense of the merchants Fomin and Shmakov. Work was carried out from 1844 to 1847.
The All Saints Church was originally assigned to the Holy Transfiguration Church. She did not have her own parish, but services were held regularly. The deceased were buried here before being buried in the local cemetery.
After the October Revolution, the church passed to the state. But she was lucky. All Saints Church is the only one in Kungur that operated during Soviet times. It was closed briefly only during the Patriotic War (from January 1941 to October 1943)
Church parishioners collected almost 175 thousand rubles for the needs of the army. They helped the local hospital and cared for the wounded in hospitals. At the front, they received parcels with warm clothes and gifts.
The Church of All Saints has a hipped bell tower, a refectory and a domed roof with one dome. In 1993, a Sunday school was opened at the church. Patriarch Alexei II visited the All Saints Church in 1996.
Transfiguration Church
- Address: Uralskaya st., 6A.
The wooden Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is mentioned in documents dating back to 1728. Construction of the stone temple began in 1763. The construction was carried out with donations from the residents of Kungur. The lion's share of the funds was contributed by the local merchant Khlebnikov.
The wooden church stood until 1770, when the lower church was opened. In 1768, the new building was consecrated in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The upper temple was completed later - in 1781. He received the name of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
The Holy Transfiguration Church was quite large. It had 5 domes, crowned with Orthodox eight-pointed crosses. The ringing of 11 bells filled the surrounding area. The main bell weighed about 9 tons (550 pounds).
The temple was closed in 1929. Its premises were not used at first, but then they housed institute courses, a vocational school and a technical school. The last owners, from the Soviet past, left in 1977.
Only 17 years later (in 1994) the Transfiguration Church returned to the believers. It was restored through donations from caring citizens. The reconstruction of the temple lasted 10 years. Services are now being held in the Holy Transfiguration Church. She opened her gates to parishioners again.
Small Alekseevskaya Church
- Address: st. Karl Marx, 1.
The one-story brick building on the Cathedral Square of Kungur is the Small Alekseevskaya Church. It is crowned with a dome with a cross. The temple was rebuilt from a pseudo-Russian style chapel building. The work was carried out with the financial assistance of the Ponomarev merchants. The father bequeathed to the brothers to build a new Epiphany Cathedral. The temple was consecrated in 1894.
Soviet authorities closed the Alekseevskaya Church in 1931. The temple premises housed various institutions and offices.
Only in 2006 the church was returned to the parishioners. Now the temple premises house an educational center and an Orthodox library. A memorial cross was installed next to the Small Alekseevskaya Church. It was erected in honor of the significant anniversary of Christianity - 2 thousand years of its existence.
Kungur mosque
- Address: st. Sitnikova, 7.
There is a place of worship in the city where believers who profess Islam can turn to God with prayers. In the archives of Kungur, information was found that in 1923 four Muslims lived in the city. They had their own house of worship.
The entire Muslim community was repressed in 1930. Her property passed to the state.
The revival of Muslim society took place in these places only in 1993. At first, the emergency school building was used for prayers. In 1996, at a community meeting, they decided to build a mosque. The following year, the first stone was laid in the foundation of the new building.
The small two-story building took almost 10 years to build (due to lack of funds). The mosque was opened in 2007. The height of its minaret reaches 26 m. The Islamic shrine became part of the Kungur mukhtasibat.
Museums of Kungur
Kungur, whose sights are carefully preserved by the townspeople, in addition to architectural and historical structures, has accumulated a huge number of priceless artifacts, exhibited for viewing in city museums.
Kungur Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve
The museum-reserve appeared in the city at the very beginning of the 20th century; the city authorities wanted to honor the memory of their fellow countryman K.T. Khlebnikov - the son of the mayor, scientist, traveler, writer. The opening took place on the day of the 50th anniversary of the abolition of serfdom, that is, February 19, 1911.
During its history, the museum has experienced many changes: evacuation in 1918, repeated changes of buildings and names, closure in 1936 and opening 4 years later.
Today, the museum collection houses more than 115 thousand valuable items, and since 2006, the museum complex includes:
- Museum of Local Lore.
- Museum of the History of Merchants.

Museum of Merchant History
The city allocated the building of the small Gostiny Dvor, which is a monument of regional significance, for the museum’s exposition. The museum was opened in 2007 and tells the story of the trade and merchant life of the region in the 18th and early 20th centuries.
Here are sections on leather and footwear, pottery, and grain trade. A large amount of material is dedicated to the Siberian trade route, and a separate room is dedicated to the tea trade. In the museum you can see awards from Russian and foreign exhibitions. Museum address: st. Gogol, 38.

Monuments in Kungur
Kungur, whose sights clearly tell about the life of the city, keeps memories of significant events in city monuments.
Obelisk to the defenders of the city from the troops of Emelyan Pugachev
Despite numerous historical turns in the life of the city, the obelisk, installed on Cathedral Square in 1893, still stands and is a special pride of the townspeople.
It was opened 100 years after the expulsion of the rebel troops, money was collected for it by the whole world. The project of the gray marble column was developed by city architect N.A. Voznesensky.
During the years of Soviet power, a red star was installed at the top of the stele, distorting the meaning of the memorial structure. After the restoration of the obelisk in 2000, the double-headed eagle was returned.
Monument to the pioneers of the Kungur region
In 1991, on the banks of the Sylva River, on the street. Gogol, a monument was unveiled dedicated to the Cossacks, who, led by Ermak, developed and annexed the harsh Siberian lands to Russia.
The author of the composition is A.Zh. Nazirov. The light stone stele is crowned with a sailing boat, on which the Cossacks sailed to the shores of the future city in the 17th century.
Monument to merchant A.S. Gubkin
There is a square in the city named after one of the most famous Kungur merchants.
Alexey Semenovich Gubkin, continuing his father’s work, began to carry out trading operations in the sale of tea, amassed a huge fortune and headed the largest tea trading enterprise in Russia.
Despite being very busy and traveling, he devoted a lot of time and effort to the development of his hometown. Burgomaster, justice of the peace, member of the city duma, he invested his money in the construction of residential buildings, shelters, and educational institutions.
In 2005, a project for a park and monument to A.S. was developed. Gubkin. The opening took place 2 years later. The well-groomed alleys of the square are decorated with green spaces and flower beds; a direct path leads to the monument. The merchant stands on a rectangular stone pedestal at full height. He leans his hand on the stand and looks thoughtfully ahead. The monument is simple and beautiful. Its height is just over 2 m.
WHAT TO SEE IN KUNGUR?
Kungur... A beautiful ancient city in the heart of the Perm region, 90 km from Perm. Past and present, age-old traditions and modern culture - every corner is imbued with all this. A trip to Kungur can be an incredibly exciting adventure for you. There are walks along merchant streets, aeronautics, a visit to an ice cave, quests in the city space, museums, and unique master classes of folk crafts.
WHERE TO TAKE A PHOTO AS A MEMORY?
At the "Navel of the Earth", of course. This monument appeared in 2007 on the Sylva embankment, next to the monument to the pioneers of the Kungur land (Karl Marx St. GPS: 57.431245, 56.942811). In 2011, the Kungur “Navel of the Earth” was awarded as the best object of monumental art at the “Discover the Volga Region” festival. On a low inclined platform there is a granite hemisphere with a compass rose, and around it there is a line indicating the distance from Kungur to Perm and world capitals: Moscow, Paris, New York, Sydney, Beijing, etc.
The place for the sculptural composition was not chosen by chance: it is here that seven roads converge - five automobile and pedestrian and two water. It is believed that if you touch the “Navel” and make a wish, it will definitely come true.
Take a photo with the bronze sculpture of Nikita the Flyer (34 Gogol St., GPS: 57.428558, 56.948417). The monument to the young man, who, according to legend, was the first conqueror of the sky in Rus', is located in the first aeronautical park in Russia. Sculptor - A. Zalazaev, architect - G. Sorokin.
You can arrange a whole photo session on Cathedral Square. In winter, it is here, in the historical center of Kungur, that the New Year tree is erected and the Ice Town is built, and in the summer, it is from here that balloons lift everyone into the sky.
Take a look at the five-domed stone Tikhvin Church ( Sitnikova St., 52), a monument of urban planning and architecture of federal significance. You can climb the bell tower, overcoming 111 steps, take bird's eye views of the city, and if you're lucky, ring the bells. They say that wishes made here come true.
And finally, take a selfie against the backdrop of the beautiful estate of the merchant Dubinin (Sovetskaya St., 26), where today the administration building of the city of Kungur is located). This is one of the largest merchant estates in Kungur. Residential and outbuildings form an almost continuous chain of one- and two-story buildings. The manor residential building, like the rest of the buildings, is made in the “brick style”. The decor uses artistic forging and processed natural stone. Interestingly, there used to be a Dubininskaya cave on the territory of the estate, but in the 1880s the entrance to it was filled in.
WHAT MUSEUMS SHOULD I VISIT?

Architectural structures in Kungur
In the once rich trading city, many merchant mansions of the 18th-19th centuries have been preserved. This was the period of greatest prosperity of Kungur, which is reminiscent of modern streets that still evoke the admiration of tourists.
Gostiny Dvor
The building of the mid-19th century is a symbol of merchant Kungur and adorns the city square of Pugachev. The previously developed building design was improved by the architect R.I. Karvovsky, construction was led by N.A. Voskresensky.
Gostiny Dvor is a two-story brick building, enclosed in an octagon, equipped with shopping arcades and storage facilities along the perimeter. Access to the courtyard is through arched gates. The building has survived to this day without any significant changes.
City Magistrate
The oldest building in Kungur is known as the City Magistrate or the Governor's House. It was erected in the 18th century.
City magistrates are city government bodies that worked in Russia on the instructions of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna from 1743 to 1778. They were replaced by city councils. Judicial functions were left to the magistrates, which were completely discontinued after the reform of 1864.
In the two-story building, throughout the indicated period of time, the rooms of the city magistrate of Kungur were located on the second floor, and the tavern was on the first floor. After the magistrate closed, there was a transit prison and a hospital for prisoners.
Estate E.Ya. Dubinina
The mansion on Sovetskaya Street is an architectural monument of regional scale. The complex of buildings was built in the 1880s by a local merchant. The two-story red brick mezzanine building features local limestone accents.
Porch and balcony with forged decorative lattice. It is interesting that earlier on the territory of the estate there was an entrance to the Dubininskaya cave, which was filled in after construction was completed.
After the merchant's death, the house was sold by his heirs. It was resold several times until it was purchased by the city. It housed the city government. Today this building houses the administration and city council of Kungur.
Mansion G.K. Kuznetsova
The building, located on K. Marx Street, 27, is an architectural monument and the most beautiful building in the city. It was built in the middle of the 19th century by Perm architect N.N. Chernitsky for the local merchant G.K. Kuznetsova.
The two-story mansion with a mezzanine had several entrances, which were used by numerous servants. The main entrance for hosts and guests was decorated with a portico with a balcony and looked very solemn. The façade was decorated with the coat of arms of the Kuznetsov merchant family.
The most beautiful and expensive building in the city was popularly called the “Kuznetsov Palace”. Here in 1873 a dinner was given in honor of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, who visited the city. Today city institutions operate here.
Architecture of the city of Kungur
Kungur was one of the centers of trade in the Urals in the 18th-19th centuries. Merchants built beautiful and modern houses for their families, buildings where city services were located. Many of these buildings can still be seen today. Despite their age, they are well preserved.
Kovalev's mansion
- Address: Sovetskaya st., 20.
The house, which once belonged to the merchant I. Kovalev, stands at the intersection of the former Uspenskaya and Blagoveshchenskaya streets. We are talking about a two-story building with an outbuilding that appeared in Kungur in 1850.
The mansion was built in the best architectural traditions of that time. Its first floor is an arcade, richly decorated with various decorative elements.
On the second floor of the house there are a large number of windows framed by beautiful frames. The building, which is more than a century and a half old, still looks good and occupies a worthy place in the architectural ensemble of the city.
Gribushin House
- Address: st. Karl Marx, 16.
Mikhail Ivanovich Gribushin was one of the richest residents of Kungur. He ran a tea trade. Its trade missions were opened in India, Ceylon, and Russian cities. He built his mansion in the center of Kungur. The building was erected in 1867. The author of the project was the architect R. Karvovsky.
The house has 2 floors. Its foundation and ground floor are made of rubble stone and lime mortar. The building is faced with brick.
The architectural style of the mansion is late Russian classicism. Gribushin's house is of impressive size. Its height reaches 8 meters, and the total area of the rooms is almost 800 m2. The decoration of the facade of the building is in the Art Nouveau style. The luxurious stucco molding that distinguished the house from other mansions appeared only in the 20th century.
In Soviet times, a maternity hospital was located here. Now the building houses the House of Culture.
Gostiny Dvor
- Address: Cathedral Square, 1.
The Gostiny Dvor building was built in 1865-1876. It was erected according to the design of the architect R. Karvovsky. This polygonal structure is designed in the style of classicism. Numerous shops were located along its perimeter. Trade was also carried out in the courtyard. You could get there by driving through large arched entrances.
A covered gallery runs along the exterior of the retail space. This architectural monument is the main symbol of commercial Kungur. Numerous transactions were once carried out here. From here goods were sent to different parts of Russia. Now Gostiny Dvor is not working; restoration work is underway on its premises.
Maly Gostiny Dvor
- Address: st. Gogol, 38.
This complex was first called the “Gribuschinsky building”. It was built in 1874 at the expense of the famous Kungur merchant M. Gribushin.
The building, divided into many stone benches, belongs to the eclectic architectural style. It is characterized by a combination of ancient Russian and oriental decorative elements.
Maly Gostiny Dvor is located opposite its older brother. Its premises were rented out. There was a brisk trade in tea, groceries and many other goods here.
City government
- Address: st. Karl Marx, 3.
The building, which once housed the business center of Kungur, was built in the 20s of the last century. This classical-style building was erected with money from local merchants and representatives of the bourgeois class.
Before the revolutionary events of 1917, the three-story building housed numerous retail premises and a public library.
In addition, the government building housed a banking institution, a museum and the Red Cross Society. Administrative institutions of Kungur were also located here - councils that dealt with city affairs and solved the problems of artisans and townspeople.
