The city of Chadan in Tyva

General information about the city of Chadan On the right bank of the Chadan River of the Yenisei basin, in the western part of the Tuva Basin, there is a city called Chadan. It has the status of the administrative center of Dzun-Khemchik kozhuun. To the east, at a distance of 230 km, is the capital of the Republic of Tuva - the city of Kyzyl, 65 km to the border with Mongolia. The nearest railway, passing through the city of Abaza, is 330 kilometers away. Chadan is located on the main highway of the republic Ak-Dovurak - Kyzyl, and to the west, 6 km from the city, the Chadan-Khantygayty highway adjoins it. The city's population is about 9,000 thousand people. The majority of it, about 95%, are Tuvans and the smallest are Russians and Komi. The surroundings of Chadan are mountains and steppe valleys that are mesmerizing in their beauty. The name of the city translated from the Tuvan language means “low-growing bush”. According to another version, it comes from the Mongolian verb “chadaar” - “not being able to, not being able to cope.” She appeared due to a dispute between the clans, which was not resolved by a battle between them, and the intervention of the ruler of Noyon did not help.

History of the city of Chadan At the confluence of the two rivers Chadan and Khondergei, the Buddhist monastery of Aldyi-Khuree was built in 1873. This date is listed as the year of foundation of Chadan. Since 1923, the settlement in the area of the monastery was called Artaadyt. In 1929 it was renamed Chadan. In the 30s, the Aldyi-Khuree monastery, like many other monasteries, was destroyed. In 1905 - 1907, according to the Tibetan design of the architect Kuntana-Rimpoche and using the labor of Chinese craftsmen, in compliance with all the rules of Buddhist architecture, the Ustuu-Khuree monastery was built. The site chosen for construction was a picturesque valley 7 km north of Chadan. In 1939 the temple was destroyed. In May 1945, the village of Chadan received city status and became the administrative center of the Dzun-Khemchik district. The discovery of coal deposits and its further development became a strong impetus for the economic development of the city. In 1946, there were several operating enterprises here: a brick factory, an industrial and oil mill, and a motor transport industry. The population was constantly growing. Economy of the city of Chadan The main enterprise of the city is the Chadan coal mine, which is a structural link of the largest coal mining enterprise of the Tuva Mining Company. The wood processing enterprise "Chadanlesprom", which sells lumber, is of great importance for the city's economy. The food industry is represented by two objects: bread and butter. The main direction of work of agro-industrial complex enterprises is livestock raising and sowing of grain crops. Culture and attractions of the city of Chadan An important cultural event of the city of Chadan is the annual International Festival of Live Folk Music, dedicated to Ustuu-Khuree - the main spiritual center of the Tuvans. His main charitable goal was the revival of the Ustuu-Khuree monastery. A large number of people, including musicians and just guests from different countries, have been coming to distant Tyva for 15 years and making their share of donations to the common cause. In July 2012, in the Chaylag-Alaag tract, the triumphal opening of the temple took place. In the city of Chadan there is a functioning local history museum named after Buyan Badirgy, the famous Tuvan statesman of the 20s. In addition to the presented exhibitions telling about the history of the creation of Khuree, there are stands about famous fellow countrymen.
