Geographical and historical information

In the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory is the city of Norilsk, which is second after Krasnoyarsk in terms of population. Despite the cold and environmental conditions, up to 182 thousand people live here. This city is the administrative center of the district, but it is known as an industrial one. The weather in Norilsk is cold and harsh.

Note 1

The administration strictly prohibits tourist excursions to the city. Of course, there may be exceptions. In order to visit Norilsk, you need to obtain a special permit. This decision was made only in 2001. Before this, for 10 years, the city was accessible to visitors.

There are five districts in the city, and each of them is different in its structure and purpose:

  • Central Market District;
  • Kayerkan;
  • Talnakh;
  • Oganer;
  • Snezhnegorsk

The first of them, on the territory of which the main market is located, was built earlier than the others. Interestingly, the residents of the city can thank the Norilka River and the Norilsk Mountains for its name.

Note 2

Being located in a latitude adjacent to Murmansk does not guarantee that the weather of the two cities will match. It is much colder in Norilsk, and the thickness of the frozen rocks is 40-80 meters.

Proximity to the Arctic Circle, the distance to which is 300 km, as well as the North Pole (2400 km) and the Krasnoyarsk Territory (1500 km) create weather conditions that distinguish Norilsk from southern cities. But another feature of its location is the distance and lack of transport accessibility. Access to the cities is possible only through the port of Dudinka, through which land transportation is mainly organized.

Also, goods can be sent along the river. Yenisei, but this path is sometimes closed. Therefore, trade turnover is often carried out through Alykel airport. If people need to fly out of the city or return back, they can also travel through air transport routes. The air quality in Norilsk cannot be ignored. Since the city is industrial, and there are many factories operating in it, the consequences of such urbanization become noticeable every now and then. These are sulfur, phenol, and also heavy metals.

Problem solving Tests Essay Air currents are transferred to Canada, for which Norilsk pays compensation to the maple country. It all started with an expedition in 1920 under the leadership of N. Urvantsev. Geologists first went to Norilsk to investigate the presence of deposits. A year later, a second expedition took place, as a result of which it was decided to build a small house at the foot of the mountain. By 1939, an industrial settlement for workers was located on the site of the future Norilsk.

Until 1953, Norilsk was rebuilt by Gulag prisoners, which allowed it to receive the status of a city. The working prisoners also stayed here, mistaking the new building for their new homeland. By that time, cinemas, hospitals, a sports stadium, secondary educational institutions, and club establishments had appeared on the city's territory.

Ulaanbaatar

The main city of Mongolia is recognized as the coldest capital in the world. It was built in the steppe with a sharply continental climate at an altitude of 1300 meters above sea level. This provides city residents with cold winters. In January, the air temperature stays at –35…–40 °C, dropping to –42.2 °C. However, the dry air of the steppes makes frost in Ulaanbaatar much easier to bear than, for example, in Central Russia.

In summer the air warms up to +20 °C. Therefore, some of the townspeople continue to live “according to the behests of their ancestors.” Yurt quarters are being created in Ulaanbaatar. The yurts have no heating, water or electricity. But people believe that in this way they are approaching the lifestyle that their predecessors led.

Iqaluit

The capital of the vast but sparsely populated region of Nunavut in Canada is located on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, in a permafrost zone.

The harsh polar climate did not allow local tribes to lead a sedentary lifestyle. But the ancestors of the Eskimos regularly went to these places for fishing. Translated from Eskimo, the name "Iqaluit" means "fish place." The 2011 census showed that 6,699 people live in the city. By 2016, there were 1,000 more of them. This is how Canadian cities located in the polar regions differ from Russian ones - population growth.

The absence of a climatic summer prevents the growth of trees. But shrubs such as arctic willow grow in Iqaluit. In winter, the thermometer drops to –45.6 °C.

Gjoa Haven

The Eskimo village of Gjoa Haven, with a population of just over 1,000 people, can hardly be called a city. This is the only settlement on Canada's King William Island and one of the coldest places on Earth where people live permanently.

The ancestors of the Inuit hunted and survived in extreme conditions. The population of the village is growing every year. In 1961, 110 people lived here. In 2001 - 960. Scientists explain this by the desire of local peoples to live a sedentary life, preserving the traditions of their ancestors.

From December to March, the air temperature in the village is below –30 °C. 10–15 years ago the thermometer dropped to –58.4 °C.

Yakutsk

Yakutsk differs from other coldest cities in the world in that it is located quite far from the sea coast. As a result, the climate is characterized by sharper temperature changes as the seasons change. In summer the city is warm. The air warms up to 25.5 °C. In January, the coldest month of the year, the thermometer shows -38.6 °C.

Among the attractions of Yakutsk is the “Kingdom of Permafrost”. This is a complex of underground tunnels on the Chochur-Muran hill. The temperature in them, even in summer, does not rise above –5 °C. The walls and ceiling are always covered with ice crystals.

An exhibition of ice sculptures was placed in the caves. One of the halls was dedicated to Chyskhaan - the mythical lord of the cold of Yakutia - half-man, half-bull. Chyskhaan sends frost and cold to the Earth. It was no coincidence that the formidable celestial being became a half-bull. Since ancient times, the Yakuts have found mammoth tusks in the permafrost. They believed that these were the horns of a huge bull. And since the horns appeared from under the snow in the spring, they believed that with the arrival of warmth, the lord of frost melted and returned to the Arctic Ocean.

Oymyakon

This city in Siberia is officially recognized as one of the two coldest cities on the planet. The climate here is complex, influenced by the polar latitude and distance from the ocean. Altitude (741 m above sea level) lowers the air temperature by an additional 4 degrees.

Oymyakon is surrounded by mountains. At night, cold air descends on the city, increasing the frost. The documented temperature minimum here was –67.6 °C. Registered February 6, 1933. Geologist Sergei Obruchev, the son of the writer Vladimir Obruchev, mentioned in his hiking diary that the air in Oymyakon cools to -71.2 °C.
