Magnificent and unique: 16 most beautiful cities in Russia

Typically, when compiling ratings of popular Russian cities, Internet portals are guided only by statistical data provided by local hotels and apartment booking services. However, not all tourists book hotels, and not every person who books a hotel is interested in the sights of these cities. That is why, in order to find out which cities were actually popular among Russians in 2022, we will turn to Internet statistics of queries from the Yandex search engine.

Three years have passed since we compiled the ranking of the Most Popular Cities in Russia (Top 50 for 2016), and the role of the Internet in the lives of our travelers has grown even more. Requests related to travel, tourism and Russian cities have increased several times. The increase in the number of requests for attractions in Russian cities is also due to the fact that people began to travel more, especially within our country. The number of bloggers has increased, both on YouTube and those who run text sites and magazines about their travels. There are practically no unexplored cities left in Russia: reports, photographs and videos about almost any city in Russia can be found on the Internet.

Yaroslavl is one of the leaders in our rating

The rating was based on the statistics of two search queries in Yandex for 2022 and 2022: “attractions...” and “what to see in...” . We selected fifty leading cities based on the number of users who requested “attractions...” in the search engine, after which the selected cities were ordered by the sum of the main query “attractions...” and the secondary query “what to see in...”. Most requests for “what to see in...” are usually in megacities. As a rule, among the people who requested such information there are many ordinary people or people planning a trip to the city for work and not for tourism purposes.

Moscow and St. Petersburg were excluded from the rating , as the undisputed leaders among Russian cities for tourism, and for the cities of the Crimean Peninsula we compiled a separate popularity rating. The top also did not take into account requests for point tourism sites (Solovki, Valaam, Pechory, Seliger and others).

Compared to the 2016 ranking, only two positions in the top five cities changed. Irkutsk and Tolyatti were dropped from the list and were replaced by Karelian Petrozavodsk and Zvenigorod near Moscow. There are also minor changes in the top ten: Tula and Krasnodar moved Suzdal and Gelendzhik out of the top 10.

If you look by region, the most popular this time were the Krasnodar Territory (5 cities), Yaroslavl Region (4 cities), Moscow and Vladimir Regions (3 cities each in the ranking). The top 10 included two out of eight Golden Ring cities, three millionaire cities and two resort cities.

Cheboksary is a city that closes the list of the most popular cities in Russia.

The numbers indicated in the description of each city are the sum of the number of requests for “attractions...” and “what to see in...” in the Yandex search engine for 2018-2019.

Climate

The rating regarding the choice of optimal climatic features according to the standard of living cannot be based on the preferences of several people. One may like the sunny weather of Maykop (Republic of Adygea), Yalta (Crimea), another may like the mild but damp climate of Kaliningrad or St. Petersburg. The third is the dry, frosty air of Siberian cities.

Here are a few cities from each climate zone:

  1. The middle (European) zone of Russia is Moscow, the Upper and Middle Volga regions (Kazan, Samara, Saransk, Penza). The climate of these cities will be optimal for older people. Mostly there are warm, moderate summers and cool winters, with the average temperature rarely falling below - 20⁰C.
  2. The southern part of the country is Maykop. This small city, located at a relative distance from the Kuban steppes and the Black Sea coast, is the optimal place to live. The number of sunny days here is almost the same as in Crimea or the Mediterranean resorts of Europe.
  3. Northwestern part of the country. Here the choice can be twofold: the temperate climate of Kaliningrad, Petrozavodsk or St. Petersburg or the harsh winters and short summers of Arkhangelsk.

  4. The Urals, Siberia is the largest part of Russia, separated by the Ural Mountains in the west, and in the east by Baikal and Lena. On the huge area, Novosibirsk can be separately noted. Summer here is relatively warm, allowing you to swim and sunbathe. Winter is not as harsh as in Vorkuta or Norilsk.
  5. Far East, Kamchatka - Khabarovsk, Komsomolsk-on-Amur. These are the only 2 cities whose climatic features do not have significant disadvantages.

Disadvantages of other cities:

  • Vladivostok – strong humidity from the ocean;
  • Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky are the same, the pole of harsh winters.
  • Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk – frequent earthquakes, humidity.

St. Petersburg is an ancient tourist city of Russia

The second name of the city is the cultural capital of Russia. It is also called Russian Venice, Northern Palmyra, but not a single name can convey all the splendor of St. Petersburg. Here you can see numerous masterpieces of architecture, monuments, picturesque natural landscapes that amaze the imagination. The rivers and canals of the city are connected by stunning bridges, some of which are drawbridges. If you come here in May or June, you can catch a wonderful natural phenomenon - white nights.

The city was founded on land conquered by Russia from Sweden during the Northern War. The history of the Northern capital of Russia began with the construction of the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1703. The name is dedicated to St. Peter, but later became associated with the name of the first Russian emperor. St. Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1918. The name of the city has changed more than once. In 1914 it was renamed Petrograd by Nicholas II, and in 1924 it was named Leningrad in honor of the leader V.I. Lenin. The city returned to its old name only in 1991.

St. Petersburg ranks second in Russia in terms of population and area. A large number of tourists come here during the white nights season. The entire city is divided into 18 large districts, the main part of which has a huge number of attractions. The city has many gardens and park areas. St. Petersburg entered the Guinness Book of Records for the total length of city tram lines, which is about 620 km. It’s not for nothing that it’s called the tram capital of the world.

There are dozens of museums, theaters, and galleries here, among them the famous Hermitage, the Peter and Paul Fortress, and the Mariinsky Theater. The most visited places in the city:

  • Winter Palace
  • Russian Museum
  • Palace Square
  • Bank Bridge
  • Admiralty building.

Among the majestic Orthodox churches, several cathedrals stand out:

  1. Isaakievsky
  2. Savior on Spilled Blood
  3. Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

Story

The status of a “city of federal significance” dates back to the times of the Russian Empire. The predecessors can be considered city administrations - settlements with certain lands that were removed from the provinces due to their special significance or location. A special feature was subordination to one of the ministers - defense, internal affairs, and so on. Changes were made after the February and October revolutions. After the first, the city authorities were transformed, and after the second they were liquidated.

In the 30s of the 20th century, two large cities of the Soviet Union - Moscow and Leningrad - again received a special status - cities of republican significance. During the existence of the USSR, each republic had only one city of republican significance, and in the RSFR there were two or more. By the middle of the century, there were 14 such settlements. In January 1993, the two largest metropolises in Russia received a status that they have retained to this day.

Moscow is the famous capital of the country

This city has survived a lot: fires, wars, attacks, but has always been reborn. About 12 million people live here, a considerable part of which are visitors, labor migrants. The main symbols of the country are located in Moscow - the Kremlin and Red Square.

In addition to them, it is worth visiting theaters, parks, and other famous places:

  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • Tretyakov Gallery
  • Pushkin Museum
  • Arbat
  • Victory Park.

Crime level

The rating of Russian cities in terms of living standards with an inherently low crime rate can be constructed based on the latest reports of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office submitted for January - September 2022. Moscow and the Moscow region will be in the lead, which is obvious based on the percentage of crimes and the number of residents.

Therefore, below is a summary table in which you can compare these percentages and draw the necessary conclusions:

SubjectNumber of crimes, pcs.Number of inhabitants, peopleNumber of crimes per 100,000 people

The numbering of cities in the table is in random order and is provided for general information. Accordingly, the larger the population of a region, the higher the crime rate.

Kazan is the famous capital of Tatarstan

The capital of Tatarstan, Kazan, is the political, administrative, and financial center of the republic. At the celebration of the city’s 1000th anniversary, Vladimir Putin named Kazan the third capital of Russia, and already in 2009 the city officially received the right to be called that. The city was founded around 1005 on the banks of the Volga River. Gradually, from a small fortress, Kazan turned into an important city for the Golden Horde. Two cultures are harmoniously intertwined here - Tatar and Russian. That is why here you can see mosques against the backdrop of churches.

The most popular sites for tourists are the Peter and Paul and Epiphany Cathedrals, the National Museum, the library, the Kazan Zoological Garden, and the Opera and Ballet Theater. Famous Kazan mosques:

  • Kul Sharif
  • Sultanovskaya
  • Galeevskaya

Kul-Sharif is the main cathedral mosque of Tatarstan. The construction of the building began in 1996 with the aim of recreating the multi-minaret legendary mosque of the capital of the Kazan Khanate, which was the center of the development of sciences and religious education of the Middle Volga region of the 16th century. The mosque was destroyed in 1552, when the troops of Ivan the Terrible attacked Kazan. The name is given in honor of its last imam, a seid named Kul Sharif.

Another ancient landmark that is impossible to miss is the bell tower of the Epiphany Cathedral. Built in 1731-1756, it is the tallest bell tower in the city and one of the tallest Orthodox bell towers. According to information in newspapers of that time, the construction of the building required about 2 million red bricks.

Purity

This section does not deal with environmental cleanliness, but with order and livability on the streets. A city included in this rating may be a large industrial center of the region and at the same time be distinguished by freshly painted benches and the absence of empty bottles on the sidewalks:

  1. Saransk has been becoming the most “tidy” city in Russia for several years. Here flowers grow in flowerbeds not only on the central streets, but also on secondary ones.
  2. Volzhsky (Volgograd region) is a satellite city of Volgograd, located on the other bank of the Volga. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that against the backdrop of the regional capital it looks like an oasis in the dry steppe. Numerous flower beds, lawns and garden trees serve as an excellent respite from the forty-degree heat.
  3. Sochi – 4 years have passed since the Winter Olympics. However, the city maintains the status it did not receive. This is not only the most successful resort in Russia, but also the most comfortable and exemplary city in terms of cleanliness.
  4. Derbent - the population of this small city with Muslim roots honors its traditions and culture. This becomes the main reason why it is very difficult to find flaws in it.
  5. Grozny - despite its centuries-old history, the city was rebuilt almost from scratch. This partly explains the low level of dirt on the streets and the high concentration of infrastructure that improves the mood of the population: flowers in flower beds, architectural monuments, etc.

Nizhny Novgorod is a city with an attractive ecology

The city is located at the confluence of two rivers - the Oka and the Volga. Nizhny Novgorod was founded back in the 13th century. In the 19th century, the largest Nizhny Novgorod fair was held here; today it is a large-scale architectural landmark. It combines the bypass canal, Gostiny Dvor, Spassky Old Fair Cathedral, and the Main Fair House.

During Soviet times, the city was called differently - Gorky, in honor of the revolutionary writer Maxim Gorky. The city is also called the capital of the Volga region, and is the fifth largest metropolis in Russia in terms of population. Included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nizhny Novgorod is attractive due to its ecology. There are many park areas and gardens, 12 rivers flow through the city, and within its borders there are 33 lakes, the largest of which is Meshcherskoye. The park area located along the Oka River is about 100 years old.

The city is rich in history and attractions. Particular attention of tourists and guests is attracted by the Nativity Church, the Chkalov Stairs, the symbol of the city, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, built in the 16th century, the house-museum of Peter I, the Rukavishnikov estate, the Pechersky Monastery, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street.

There is an Art Museum in the Kremlin, where you can see paintings by great artists: Aivazovsky, Levitan, Roerich and others. The ashes of Kuzma Minin are kept in the Kremlin. The oldest church in the city is St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral, whose main shrine is the icon of the Kazan Mother of God.

Infrastructure for children

Regarding the provision of city streets with infrastructure for children (playgrounds, schools, kindergartens, sports institutions), the list of leading cities is updated annually. Based on the indicators for 2022, it is possible to compile a table in which the first places are not the capitals of the constituent entities, but settlements that have a secondary status.

Outsiders in the rating are those whose residents, in the majority, claim the absence of the very children's infrastructure necessary for children:

Among cities with a million-plus population status, only Moscow and St. Petersburg are in the top ten. The rest are in the middle of the table, and some, for example Volgograd, are almost at the end (out of 150 participants in the survey, it ranks 110th).

Yekaterinburg - the city of Empress Catherine

Theater city, the birthplace of modern drama, the decoration of the Urals. Yekaterinburg received its name in honor of Empress Catherine I, but Catherine II played an important role in its fate. It was she who made it a city and laid one of the main roads of the Fatherland through Yekaterinburg - the Siberian Highway.

On the site of the future city, the first settlement was founded in 1723. The city received official status only half a century later. Unfortunately, a large number of historical and architectural monuments were destroyed during Soviet times. Today Yekaterinburg is actively visited by tourists who are attracted by the Sevastyanov House, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tsarsky Bridge, Zheleznov’s estate, the Church on the Blood, which was built on the site of the execution of the Royal Family, which tragically died in 1918.

In the city you can see a unique monument that is not found anywhere else in Russia - the Black Tulip memorial complex, dedicated to those killed in battles in Afghanistan and Chechnya. Around the large figure of a warrior there are pylons representing the fuselage of an aircraft. Each one bears the names of those killed in the Afghan war.

Rostov-on-Don

The beautiful city of southern Russia was built by order of Empress Elizabeth in 1749. But during the period of antiquity, the Greek colony-polis of Tanais was located here. The explored ruins of the ancient settlement can still be seen on the outskirts of Rostov.

Located at the mouth of the Don, Rostov became the unofficial gateway to the Caucasus. It is also famous for the fact that it is one of the cleanest cities in Russia.

Rostov is unique for its buildings of the 18th - 19th centuries. The main streets intersect at right angles. This feature has survived to this day.

There are about 1,000 cultural heritage sites in Rostov, including 70 archeological monuments from different eras. Among the architectural masterpieces, the City Duma Building and the Chirikov Apartment House should be highlighted.

Kaliningrad - German city of Russians

The city was founded in the 13th century on the shores of the Baltic Sea. This is an ancient German city that became Russian after 1945. During the war, Yekaterinburg suffered severe destruction, but did not lose its appearance. Residents were able to preserve priceless historical monuments and restore their native land. Gothic architecture is unusual for a Russian city, but it is thanks to it that the squares, gardens, museums, and parks of Kaliningrad look special. In one of the parks there is the “Upside Down House”. Main attractions of the city:

  • Wrangel Tower
  • Cathedral
  • Queen Louise Church
  • Royal Gate
  • Monument to Baron Munchausen.

The city is home to the world's only Amber Museum and the unique Museum of the World Ocean.

Kaliningrad is on the list of 11 Russian cities that hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The world-famous Forbes magazine named the city the best in the country for business and investment.

Employment

The capital is a confident leader, both in the number of vacancies and in the level of wages, which are not affordable for everyone. In addition to Moscow, there are a number of cities that are not so much inferior to it in these indicators.

The top five looks like this:

  1. St. Petersburg – the number of vacancies exceeds applicants.
  2. Novosibirsk - the ratio of available vacancies and unemployed is 8% worse than in St. Petersburg.
  3. Krasnodar is constantly growing, which allows us to talk about an increase not only in the population, but also in the number of vacancies.
  4. Kazan has the most favorable proportions regarding vacancies and salary ratios.
  5. Khabarovsk and Vladivostok show almost identical results. This can be explained by the state program “Far Eastern Hectare”, which became the reason for the development of small businesses, resulting in the emergence of new vacancies.

The above rankings are based on employability. The salary amount was not taken into account in this situation.

Vladimir - the ancient city of Prince Vladimir

The city is part of the Golden Ring of Russia. It was founded by Prince Vladimir in 990. Located on the coast of the Klyazma River, surrounded by wide fields and forests. Today it is the largest industrial and cultural center of the country, although its population is no more than 350,000 people.

The oldest historical monuments of the city that have survived to this day:

  • Dmitrievsky Cathedral
  • Assumption Cathedral
  • Golden Gate
  • Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
  • Nikitskaya Church
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Galei

Other attractions in Vladimir include the Trinity Church, the Historical Museum, the water tower, and the Planetarium.

Kudos

It is extremely difficult to construct a rating of Russian cities based on the standard of living of the population, regarding the prestige of a particular entity. The only stable indicator is Moscow, which is in the leading position.

Numerous surveys of local residents conducted by research centers over several years showed different results. Most of the respondents are satisfied with their place of residence and consider the city prestigious.

However, statistics prove that only a few cities (with the exception of the capital) get the best results:

  1. Kazan.

  2. Novosibirsk
  3. Sochi.
  4. Lyubertsy.

Sochi is a famous resort in Russia

This city is a real precious pearl of the Black Sea. When you hear its name, thoughts immediately come to mind about summer holidays, the sea, palm trees, the beach. The country's largest resort town was founded in 1838. Other unofficial names are Southern, the resort capital of Russia.

The XXII Winter Olympic Games were held here in 2014, and matches of the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

In Sochi, in addition to the sea coast, you should definitely visit the oceanarium, arboretum, amusement park "Riviera", and the museum of ethnography. There are many cinemas in the city, the largest being Luxor IMAX, opened in 2012.

Quality of public services

The rating of Russian cities in terms of living standards, based on the quality of housing and communal services, was based on reviews of the local population.

Only in a few regions of the Russian Federation are local residents satisfied with the work of public utilities:

Suzdal - Museum of Architecture

The boundaries of the ancient tourist town were last changed in the 16th century. It is noteworthy that there are no industrial enterprises or modern high-rise buildings here. This is an open-air museum city, where the beauty of nature is combined with unique ancient monuments. The name comes from the word “zizhid”, which means “to build”. There are hundreds of buildings in Suzdal, most of which are masterpieces of Russian architecture. Main attractions:

  • Kremlin
  • Museum of Peasant Life
  • Monastery of Saint Euthymius.

The Kremlin is a complex consisting of St. Nicholas Church, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and the Bishop's Chamber. The paintings of the Transfiguration Cathedral in the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery are amazing. The bell tower has an unusual clock with Slavic numerals.

There are many ancient temples in the city. The beauty of the city is protected by UNESCO. Tourists come here from all over the world, for whom, in addition to excursions, interesting entertainment programs are provided. In addition to hostels and hotels, visitors can stay in monastery guest houses.

Shops and markets

In terms of the number and availability of retail outlets, Moscow and St. Petersburg will lead in this position. The maximum number of shops, shopping centers and markets are concentrated here.

The third place is occupied by Yekaterinburg and Krasnodar with indicators several times inferior to the leaders. Subsequent subjects of the Russian Federation can be called middle peasants, since there is nothing interesting about them.

Separately, we should mention Maykop, forgotten in the mountains, with its ideal climate and minimal number of retail outlets, and the as yet undeveloped Crimean Peninsula. With the opening of the bridge across the Kerch Strait, the trade infrastructure of the region is being improved, but in comparison with the Russian one it is still significantly inferior.

Novosibirsk is a beautiful railway city

One of the youngest cities in the country, founded in 1893. There are not many historical attractions here, but Novosibirsk attracts with its beauty and is not inferior to others on the list of the most beautiful. The most ancient objects on the territory of Novosibirsk:

  • Ascension Cathedral
  • St. Nicholas Cathedral
  • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The city has the largest railway station. Visiting guests can take a guided tour to the world's only Museum of the Sun, original monuments to sausage, and traffic lights.

There is not enough time to travel all over Russia, but you can visit the most beautiful cities that will help create an overall picture of all the most beautiful, unique things of this mighty and huge country.

Specifics

The most important feature of megacities in this status is a special form of organization of local government, consisting of intra-city municipalities. Among the latter may be urban districts, towns, settlements. This allows you to control the work of the current government in a slightly different way.

The peculiarity of the two largest federal cities of the Russian Federation is the presence of a highly surplus budget and the almost complete absence of financial influences from the federal budget. A fairly significant part of the finances is spent by the metropolis not on maintaining budgetary organizations and paying wages to people working in this area, but on investments and improving urban infrastructure.

With Sevastopol the situation is somewhat different. The settlement became part of the Russian Federation relatively recently, so almost 70% of the budget is replenished thanks to injections from the state budget. All finances are spent mainly for the development of the social sphere. But the population is low, so there is a surplus. Thanks to this, you can notice the high volume of expenses for each resident, which is the highest in the state. The policy of constant “infusion” of finances is justified - the number of residents is constantly increasing, mainly due to immigrants from neighboring Ukraine.

Salary level

The result of research into the level of income of the population once again shows the huge dispersion and unevenness of the level of wages of the population. At the same time, the elementary value of the consumer basket varies in the range from 1.32 to 3.58, which shows the difference between the leaders and outsiders by almost 2.8 times.

In the first half of this year, residents of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk had the highest incomes, taking into account the cost of living: the average salary here is 81,700 rubles. You can use it to purchase 3.6 consumer baskets (including a set of services and utility bills).

Salekhard is located nearby with a salary of 90,600 rubles, but the cost of living here is slightly higher, so the city takes second position. Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk, 3 and 4 lines, respectively.

Moscow confidently remains in 5th place. Although the amount of income in relation to accommodation here is significantly inferior to that of the leaders. But still, the level of salaries in the capital looks good - 89,578 rubles.

At the bottom of the ranking are the southern cities of Russia. Historically, the income of the population in them is minimal, but even low prices for a package of goods and services cannot compensate for this.
