Gusinoozersk arose in 1939 as the village of “Shakhty”, during the establishment of coal industry enterprises at the Gusinoozersk lignite deposit. In 1953, by Decree of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR dated July 15 No. 731/3, the village of “Shakhty” was transformed into a city of regional subordination with the name Gusinoozersk being assigned to it, and by Decree of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR dated January 1, 1963, Gusinoozersk was transformed into a city of republican submission.

Gusinoozersk is located on the shore of Lake Gusinoye on an area of ​​1.3 thousand hectares. The area of ​​Lake Gusinoe is 163 km3, depth is up to 28 m. This is the largest lake in Eastern Siberia and Transbaikalia after Baikal, and serves as a source of drinking water for the city and the villages adjacent to the lake. Over the past 17 years, due to unprofitability of production, all previous coal industry enterprises that provided fuel to the Gusinoozerskaya State District Power Plant have been liquidated.
