The Republic of Buryatia
There is a little-known provincial town in Transbaikalia, or rather, the urban settlement of Gusinoozersk. This is the center of the Selenginsky district of the republic. Buryatia. Today Gusinoozersk is the second city in Buryatia in terms of economic importance and population (in 2008 the population of Gusinoozersk was 27 thousand people). Second, because the city-forming enterprise of Gusinoozersk is the Gusinoozerskaya State District Power Plant, one of the largest power plants in Eastern Siberia and Transbaikalia, supplying electricity to other regions of Russia and abroad.
Gusinoozersk is the administrative center of the Selenginsky district. The city of Gusinoozersk is located in the southern part of the Republic of Buryatia, on the north-eastern shore of Lake Gusinoye, in the southern part of the Gusino-Udinskaya Valley. The city is located 110 km southwest of Ulan-Ude, 6 km from the Ulan-Ude-Naushki railway line. Gusinoozersk arose in 1939 as the village of “Shakhty”, during the establishment of coal industry enterprises at the Gusinoozersk lignite deposit. In 1953, by Decree of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR dated July 15 No. 731/3, the village of “Shakhty” was transformed into a city of regional subordination with the name Gusinoozersk being assigned to it, and by Decree of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR dated January 1, 1963, Gusinoozersk was transformed into a city of republican submission.
Gusinoozersk is located on the shore of Lake Gusinoye on an area of 1.3 thousand hectares. The area of Lake Gusinoe is 163 km3, depth is up to 28 m. This is the largest lake in Eastern Siberia and Transbaikalia after Baikal, and serves as a source of drinking water for the city and the villages adjacent to the lake. It has wide potential for tourism business.
Over the past 17 years, due to unprofitability of production, all previous coal industry enterprises that provided fuel to the Gusinoozerskaya State District Power Plant have been liquidated. Despite this, the city of Gusinoozersk managed to continue to remain a large industrial hub, where 20% of all production assets of Buryatia are located. Currently, the city's industry is represented by 5 industries: electric power, coal, building materials, woodworking and food. The last decade of the twentieth century was marked by a revival of spirituality, a return to faith, and the restoration of destroyed churches. In the 90s, a branch of the Tamchinsky datsan was formed in Gusinoozersk, famous for the fact that until the 30s of the last century it was the Tamchinsky datsan that was the center of Buddhism in Russia. Gusinoozersk is located 110 km from Ulan-Ude. In recent years, many shops and eateries have been built in the city and along the Ulan-Ude-Kyakhta highway. Historical sketch
It emerged in 1939 as the village of Shakhty in connection with the development of brown coal deposits.
Since April 28, 1948, the working village of Shakhty. On July 15, 1953, it was transformed into a city and named Gusinoozersk after Lake Gusinoye, on the shore of which it is located.
