The magnificent palace, which became the center of the estate of the richest gold miner Astashev, is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. The construction of the architectural monument, which lasted 4 years, was completed in 1842.

The elegant building, the facades of which are decorated with bay windows with delightful columns on both sides, is an excellent example of the Empire architectural style. Over the many years of its existence, the estate managed to be the residence of Tomsk bishops and was used as a House of Education Workers. Since 1925, expositions of the local history museum have been located here.

This elegant mansion, built at the beginning of the last century for the wealthy merchant G.M. Golovanov, is considered one of the masterpieces of wooden architecture not only in Tomsk, but throughout Siberia. The light blue color of the facade, the elegance of the figured roofs of the wings and the decor of openwork wooden elements covering the pediments with lace work create a feeling of unique lightness.

The house seems fabulous, weightless, floating in the air. The building is decorated with a small tower with a hipped dome and a high spire. This miracle, created by the golden hands of masters and carefully preserved to this day, is definitely worth admiring.

House with firebirds

Only slightly inferior in splendor to the Khomich mansion is the house with firebirds, built for the family of the merchant L.D. Zhelyabo in 1890. The building amazes not only with its elegance, but also with the variety of architectural solutions. Its façade is decorated with spacious bay windows supported by wooden columns.

The small square mezzanine above the central part is decorated with pointed turrets, and the main spire is covered with a flock of fabulous firebirds. Particularly worth highlighting are the stunning window frames. They are framed by semi-columns with elegant capitals. Relief carved decorative elements amaze with the subtlety of work.

Resurrection Mountain

Now it’s time to get acquainted with the historical part of the city, namely Resurrection Mountain. It is within walking distance from the City Garden, so no transport is needed. There is a museum on the mountain, which you can enter for a small fee and immerse yourself in all the events of the city since its founding. The composition consists of two grandiose granite figures depicting a mother presenting a weapon to her son going to the front and the Eternal Flame. Around there are 15 stone steles with aluminum slabs containing the names of the heroes engraved on the metal surface. The monument is part of the Victory Alley complex.

Monument “400 years of Tomsk”

A magnificent monument appeared in the city in 2004, when the 400th anniversary of its foundation was celebrated. The center of the composition is a bronze sculpture composed of heraldic shields, which depict city coats of arms from various periods of the history of Tomsk, topped with the crown of the Russian Empire.

Conical tetrahedral obelisks are installed in the corners of the square area. They rise on pedestals decorated with bas-reliefs telling about the main milestones of the city chronicle.

Monument to the soldiers of the 39th Infantry Regiment

Although the monument appeared on the square near the River Station only in 2012, it has already become one of the calling cards of the city. The opening of the monument to the Siberian heroes, who amazed the French generals with their courage shown during the Patriotic War of 1812, was timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino.

In the center of the composition is a 10-meter column, topped with a bronze figure of an eagle with outstretched wings. It is installed on a pedestal, on the sides of which there are memorial plaques and bas-reliefs with fragments of the battles of Smolensk and Borodino.

Tomsk residents made an invaluable contribution to the creation of technology that allowed first the USSR and then Russia to take a leading position in space exploration. Turn onto the Moskovsky tract and find Tatarskaya Street, this is the center of the former Tatarskaya Sloboda. It preserves many wooden buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries: a whole area of ancient architecture.

Tatars are the original population of Tomsk lands. According to legend, the local river got its name from the Tatar girl Tom. She and her beloved Ushay threw themselves into the water because their parents did not allow them to be together. It was the Tatars who turned to Boris Godunov in 1604 with a request to build a fort for protection against nomads - the Yenisei Kyrgyz and Kalmyks. This is how Tomsk appeared. And the Tatars traded and were engaged in crafts here; the White and Red Mosques and special schools and madrassas became the spiritual centers of the settlement.

Today the main custodian of Tatar antiquity is the Center of Tatar Culture. It is located on nearby Gorky Street in the mansion of merchant Karim Khamitov. Be sure to look into it, you will be treated to chak-chak and “crow porridge”, and perhaps even taken to the dungeon. Previously, there was a whole system of tunnels near Tomsk. Somewhere entrances or exits have been preserved, and under the Tatarskaya Sloboda there are entire paths. According to various versions, local merchants hid treasures there and set traps for their ill-wishers or uninvited guests.

The merchant Karim-bai also had his own underground passages. It was believed that the underground canals he laid led to the river and even passed under it: supposedly this is how the merchant led his herds to the water meadows. Like many Tatars, Karim-bai bred thoroughbred horses and was engaged in carriage - the Moscow Highway passed nearby, which opened the way to Asia and mainly to China. The coat of arms of Tomsk today depicts a silver horse.

Natural attractions of the city and surrounding area

In the city itself, several walking squares and streets are available for visiting, but in the outskirts of Tomsk you can also find a place worth going to, for example, on a weekend.

Siberian Botanical Garden

The greenhouse complex occupies an area of 10 hectares. The botanical garden is both an excursion and a research facility. It belongs to Tomsk State University. In total, the botanical garden presents 8,000 plant species, including many exotic ones. About half of the specimens are representatives of the tropics and subtropics, that is, a climate zone uncharacteristic for the region.

White Lake

The reservoir in the very center of the city historically served as a source of fresh water; it was clean here, and residents sincerely believed in its healing properties. Today White Lake is a recreational site, recognized as a natural monument, and is a favorite vacation spot for Tomsk residents and tourists.

Adults and children relax and have fun here. In summer, the lake serves as a place for swimming and sunbathing; vacationers go on catamarans. In winter there is an ice skating rink. Near the lake there is a playground where children frolic. The Chunga-Changa amusement park is also located nearby.

Go downhill along Bakunina, turn left and walk along Obrub to Shishkova Street. There is the estate of the writer Vyacheslav Shishkov - now the Tomsk “House of Arts”. This is a modern cultural platform that hosts festivals, master classes and creative meetings with writers, artists, performers and musicians. Grab a cup of tea after viewing the exhibition and sit on the balcony. You will have a view of the area with the not very pleasant name “Swamp”. Of course, these are not the famous Vasyugan swamps in the Tomsk region, but the soil in these places is marshy.
