Belogorsk in Crimea is a picturesque city with a population of more than 16 thousand people, which is located on the banks of the Biyuk-Karasu River. It is one of the centers of agriculture in Crimea: due to its close location to a reservoir, the lands around the city are regularly irrigated. There are orchards around the city, the harvest of which is sold at local markets in the summer. This is a settlement with a long history.
City `s history
In the Middle Ages it was called Karasubazar - that is, a market on the banks of the Karasu River (the name of which is translated from Tatar as “black water”). The city was first mentioned in written documents in the 18th century. There was lively trade here, with caravans heading to the markets. During the reign of the Shirin Beys, Karasubazar reached its peak, and until the 1700s. was one of the largest economic and cultural centers of the Crimean Khanate. Under the Russian Empire, Karasubazar was the administrative center of the peninsula.
The city of Belogorsk in Crimea received its modern name thanks to the White Rock of Ak-Kaya, one of the main natural attractions of the settlement. It is surrounded by white rocks from all surroundings. Archaeologists have established that the first people settled in the territory 150 thousand years ago. They used the rocks as homes.
Now the city is rich in cultural attractions, including natural ones. Here you can relax alone with a camera, capturing the amazing city surroundings on film, or with your family: you can visit the safari park, watch films in the cinema of the Guzel shopping center or fly in hot air balloons.
The importance of the city in the modern world
Belogorsk in Crimea, whose sights are known throughout the peninsula, received its modern name relatively recently. It is associated with geographical features: the location of the settlement between mountains with white peaks. The ancient name is Karasubazar, literally translated, literally translated as “market located on Karasu”.
Karasu is a river on the banks of which the city was founded in the 13th century. It is not known exactly who laid the first stone in its foundation, but Karasubazar was an important point on the caravan route from east to west. The city is located 42 km from the capital of Crimea, Simferopol. The city is located at coordinates 45°03′16″ north latitude and 34°36′08″ east longitude. Its area is more than 5 square meters. km.
Location of the city and its climate
The city of Belogorsk is located in the foothills, in the valley of the Biyuk-Karasu River. Mountains that protect from the winds in winter, an abundance of forests and ponds that provide coolness in summer, provide the area with an almost Mediterranean climate, and the fertile land gives people springs with unusually tasty spring water, an abundance of wild berries and fruit-bearing orchards.
Spring in Belogorsk is early and quite warm - the temperature in March rises to 10 degrees, summer lasts from May to October, winter temperatures are always above zero, and the snow, having just appeared, quickly melts.
Ecology
In the vicinity of the city there are many natural monuments. The city is surrounded on one side by mountainous terrain and on the other by a river. Until 2014, the area was considered one of the most unfavorable from an environmental point of view. Many cases of illegal use of natural resources, in particular quarries, as well as environmental pollution have been recorded.
After 2014, the state of the ecology of the Belogorsk region has improved significantly. Currently, pine forests are being planted around the city, and gardening, in particular vineyards, is being revived. In the area there is the Taigan Safari Park, where more than 50 African lions live freely.
Flora and fauna
The fauna of the Belogorsk region is similar to the fauna of the entire peninsula. Here you can find a large number of different insects: especially butterflies. Their species diversity exceeds 2 thousand species. There are not as many poisonous and biting insects here as in other southern cities.
In the vicinity of the city, especially when climbing the mountains, you can find “sites” of nocturnal bats. At night they hunt for mice and other rodents, and during the day they rest in small mountain caves. On walks in the Belogorsk forests you can meet another interesting animal - the Crimean mountain fox.
The city is surrounded by an arc of pine forests. Forests protect Belogorsk from piercing sea winds, which improves the weather. Pines were planted here recently, but already now the influence of their “aroma” has a beneficial effect not only on the health of city residents, but also on the well-being of vacationers.
How to get there
The city is located near Simferopol on the Tavrida highway. There are no rail or air connections to Belogorsk, but if you wish, you can get to Simferopol by train or plane, and then go to Belogorsk by car or regular bus.
There is no bus transport in the city itself, so tourists will have to either move between attractions on foot or use the services of a Belogorsk taxi.
By car
You can get from Simferopol by car to Belogorsk in literally half an hour along the P23 highway.
By bus
Getting from Simferopol to Belogorsk is quite easy. Most buses pass here, but they go almost every half hour. Travel time takes from 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on the number of intermediate stops.
Economics[ | ]
The city does not belong to the category of industrial cities. The city's economy is predominantly represented by trade and service enterprises. Among them: trade enterprises, food industry enterprises, four construction industry enterprises, two timber industry enterprises. Small private enterprise is developing. Belogorsk is the center of a large agricultural region.
The Tavrida highway (P260[35]) runs along the northern outskirts of the city. Construction of the road began in May 2022.[36]
On December 30, 2022, traffic was opened at the second and third stages of the first stage of the federal highway - on the section from the village of Batalnoye to Belogorsk, with a length of about 85 km.[37]

Main attractions
Belogorsk (Crimea), the sights of which can be seen in many guidebooks, is famous for the sites of ancient people and natural monuments.
Religious buildings
The ancient city was one of the central points for caravans to travel from east to west, so religious buildings of that time have been preserved in Belogorsk.
Caravanserai Tash-Khan
The remains of the medieval barn Tash-Khan are located on the territory of Belogorsk. According to archaeologists, the building was erected for the purpose of defending the settlement - its perimeter is 400 steps, and there are loopholes in the walls.
Belogorsk, caravanserai Tash-Khan.
In the 20-30s, scientists working in Belogorsk put forward the proposal that Tash Khan was an important center of trade and negotiations in medieval times. Since these years, the remains of the fortress have been protected by the state. You can visit the attraction (it is located on Lunocharskogo Street) absolutely free.
Kurgan Kemi-Oba
The Kemi-Oba mound is a burial ground that began to be explored in 1947. Items found during excavations were attributed to the Bronze Age. During the work, wooden boxes with the remains of human bones and dishes made of various materials were discovered. Also, later, peculiar catacombs with poorly preserved skeletons were dug.
Museums
Museums are an opportunity to get to know the culture, life and customs of local residents of ancient and modern times.
Museum of History and Local Lore
You can get acquainted with the ancient and more modern history of the Belogorsk region in the local history museum. It was opened in 1983. The exhibition includes many items of material culture that reveal the life of the population of Belogorsk during the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars.
Fans of ancient history will be surprised by the wide-open history of the Scythians who lived here - the exhibition is represented by the weapons of this people. You can also admire the decorations of the brands and household items of the Neanderthals. The museum is open every day except Tuesday.
Museum of the Greek Settlement of Karachol
The settlement of Karachol (currently the village of Chernopolye) was founded in 1992. The exhibition is based on the life of Greek migrants who once moved to this area from the east of Greece. The basis is a 19th-century style manor, where you can see clothes, dishes, handicrafts and even photographs of ethnic Greeks.
Thematic congresses of the Greeks of Crimea are held in Karachol; master classes on Greek customs, dances and celebrations are held for tourists. You can get to Chernopolye by private car or by bus to Chernopolye station.
Natural attractions
The nature of the Belogorsk region is unusual and fascinating. There are many places to visit not only in summer but also in winter.
Cheremisovsky cascade of waterfalls
Crimean Cheremisovsky waterfalls are a natural attraction of the Belogorsk region. They are located on the waters of the Kuchuk-Kasasu or Melkaya Karasevka rivers. The waterfalls arose due to the peculiarities of the local rocks. Some of them the river was able to wash away, others did not succumb to the river. Two waterfalls are especially popular among tourists: Youth and Love.
The waters of Kuchuk-Kasasu created a recess at the foot of Youth, which the locals call the Bath of Youth. The water temperature here practically does not exceed 10 °C even in warm weather. The Love Waterfall consists of two streams that merge into one as they follow, symbolizing the eternal unity of two souls.
In addition to the waterfalls, you can also visit the Small Canyon - this is a small gorge that the river has carved over many thousands of years of its existence. The canyon is especially popular among photographers and extreme sports enthusiasts.
You can get to the Cheremisovsky Canal by personal transport or by public bus from Belogorsk to the villages of Povorotnoye or Krasnaya Sloboda. The waterfalls can only be reached from settlements on foot, so tourists are advised to wear warm, comfortable shoes and clothing.
Ak-kaya rock
Ak-kaya is translated from Turkish as white mountain. The mountain got its name because of its characteristic rocks: limestone and very light sandstone. This place used to be the high point of the ancient sea. Now the southern winds have sharpened the mountain to the point of a sheer wall. From afar, a traveler may think that this is the work of man.
Ak-kaya has always been a refuge for tribes and peoples. In the caves here the remains of ancient animals and Neanderthals have been found and are being found. One of the latest finds was the skeleton of a woman with a child. In the area around the rock there are many Scythian burials. Previously, black diggers in search of gold could be found here.
In the Middle Ages, this place was used for shamanism; leaders and leaders of troops were chosen here and criminals could be executed. Ak-kaya rock is surrounded by legends and myths. According to the locals, the Crimean analogue of the Serpent Gorynych lives in one of the caves.
You can get to the rock by private car or by minibus from Belogorsk. The minibus goes to a stop in the village of Belaya Skala. There is no transport to the rock itself. There is a horse farm in the village where you can rent a horse to climb to the top of the cliff.
Monuments
There are a small number of monuments in the Belogorsk region compared to other cities of Crimea, but they have an interesting and amazing history
Catherine Mile
This unusual monument was erected in honor of Empress Catherine's journey through Crimea. In total, several such “monuments” were erected on the peninsula along the route of the head of the empire.
The monument is a small column-like structure made of white limestone with a black plaque. In 2012 the monument was reconstructed. To get to it you need to cross the Burulcea River.
Monuments to the deceased pilot
The monument is located at the site of the plane's circling in 1990. Navigator Vladimir Shchadrin took the burning plane away from the populated area until the last moment, so the mechanism of his parachute was broken. The monument was erected by local residents and is located near the village of Zuya.
Historical milestones
A city called Belogorsk appeared on the map of the Republic of Crimea only in 1944, although by that time it had been known for many centuries under the name Karasubazar. In general, its history began much earlier, about 150 thousand years ago, when the river valley was chosen by Neanderthals to live.
The next guests of the valley were the Greeks in the 5th century BC. founded the military fortress of Mavron-Kastron (Black Castle) here, where they successfully repulsed the attacks of the warlike Bosporans laying claim to Chersonesos. They were replaced by the Scythians, then the Sarmatians, Goths, Huns, Byzantines, but no matter how many peoples passed through these places, the life of the ancient city remained the same - all trade routes passed through it.
The city received the name Karasubazar from the Golden Horde, because the Great Silk Road passing here only strengthened its economic and trade importance. Markets flourished magnificently, including slave markets, the city was built up with caravanserais, it even became the capital of the Khanate when Bakhchisarai was burned during the next Russian-Turkish war. It was here that the Crimean Tatar nobility took an oath of allegiance to Catherine II, and for a whole year Karasubazar was considered the main center of the peninsula.
With the development of railways, the city lost its commercial importance, and later its old name. If we talk about when the city day is in Belogorsk, then the countdown must be carried out from the assignment of a new name to it in 1944, and it was given by the name of a huge rock (White Rock) above the valley.
Leisure
For active recreation, it is best to choose Taigan Safari Park. It is the largest park of its kind not only in Crimea, but throughout Europe. Taigan is home to about 500 different animals, of which 60 are lions and about 40 tigers. In addition to them, you can see leopards, pumas, lynxes and jaguars. The safari park is especially famous for its rare white lions.
Non-predatory animals also live in Taigan: bison, yaks, lemurs and even giraffes.
The Safari Park was opened in 2012 partly on the territory of a former military base and immediately became the leader in wild cat habitat in Europe. Animals were brought here from various zoos in Africa, Europe and Russia.
The remarkable thing about the park is that all wild animals here are free to range. Visitors can admire prides of lions, tiger forays and flocks of pink flamingos. The latter are quite rarely found even in the world's largest zoos.
The main service of the safari park is excursions around the territory. A ride in an electric car will cost, depending on the number of people and the duration of the excursion, from 6 thousand rubles to 200 rubles. per person. You can also rent a pedicab here and ride throughout the park. Its cost is 400 rubles. in 1 hour. The cheapest way is a train, 100 rubles. per person.
You can see the park absolutely free, but you will have to walk around it. Thrill-seekers can go on a “Real Safari”. Here you can not only get to know the park’s main cats – lions – but also take pictures with them. The cost of such an excursion is 10 thousand rubles. per person.
The Safari Park also offers helicopter flights with a bird's eye view of the park. The cost of the flight is 10 thousand rubles. in 15 minutes In summer, the park is open from 8.00 to 20.00.
Creations of nature
The surroundings of Belogorsk are recommended for those who prefer active recreation. Here you should climb mountains and climb into caves. The landscape of the area is very original and diverse, thanks to which it has been repeatedly featured in films, successfully depicting various exotic corners. A number of photos of the sights of Belogorsk (especially the White Rock) are also known to those who have not been to Crimea.
White Rock (Ak-Kaya)
- Coordinates on the map: 45.097298, 34.637664.
This place is one of the most recognizable in Crimea and a symbol of Belogorsk. The white color is due to the geological composition, and the complex shapes of the steep walls are made by water and air erosion.
The unusual appearance of the Ak-Kaya rock has repeatedly attracted the attention of filmmakers to it, and the mountain range with a height of just under 300 m constantly had to play the Wild West. Its own history is also quite “wild”: it is believed that the Turks dumped prisoners from it who were not suitable for slavery and were not redeemed by relatives.
Allegedly, even the young B. Khmelnitsky was brought here to “admire” this spectacle and think about the need to quickly raise money for his own ransom (this was in 1620).
Karabi-yayla
- Coordinates: 44.882257, 34.520819.
Yaylami in Crimea are called flat highlands. Karabi-yayla is the leader in area - 113 square meters. km. The top of the highlands is an incredible land of stone - there is little life there, but there are many geological forms. The mountain is riddled with underground tunnels - 235 caves were discovered in the massif (most are inaccessible to non-specialists or are generally poorly explored).
The array is popular among fans of various “cosmogonic” theories. They say that on its surface there are images of butterflies laid out in huge boulders (which can only be seen from at least a bird's eye view). To go here, it is better for inexperienced tourists to get a guide - there are many dangerous places on the plateau, and it’s easy to get lost in an unusual environment.
Cheremisovskie waterfalls
- Coordinates: 44.933057, 34.700789.
We are talking about an amazingly beautiful cascade of waterfalls in a canyon carved by the Kuchuk-Karasu River. The valley is narrow, with difficult terrain. Therefore, to visit the Cheremisovsky waterfalls you need more or less decent physical shape.
You should dress relatively warmly - it is noticeably colder at the bottom of the gorge than in the open area. The gorge is protected, but several tourist routes are laid across its territory.
The waterfalls are relatively small, but picturesque and there are many of them. At their feet, water has carved out “baths” in the bottom - peculiar deep ponds, to which tradition has given romantic names. It is best to visit the attraction in the spring – in the summer the Kuchuk-Karasu River dries up.
Uskut waterfalls
- Coordinates: 44.885018, 34.678489.
There are as many as 7 waterfalls on the Uskut River. They are not distinguished by record height and power, but they are beautiful in their own way. In general, Uskut waterfalls are not a popular tourist destination.
There are no equipped places for rest and observation platforms near them. The walk requires some physical preparation (no special skills are needed) and caution: there is a high risk of slipping on wet stones.
It is better to explore these Crimean waterfalls in the spring, since the river dries up in the summer. This walk can be recommended to tourists who want to take a break from civilization and climb into untouched places.
Cave of Tauris
- Coordinates: 45.043125, 34.283914.
A normal visit to this attraction will have to wait a little - the cave, just over a kilometer long, will be opened only in 2022. Its name was given not in honor of ancient Crimean history, but for a completely modern reason - the pioneers of the karst cavity were the builders of the Tavrida highway.
Now the section of the roadway above the Tavrida cave is being strengthened in order to preserve it. The arrangement of the cavity for visiting has already been planned. Scientists have discovered bones of ancient animals, in particular a mastodon, in underground galleries.
Interesting places to relax with children
Belogorsk (Crimea), whose attractions are usually of interest to adults, has several entertainment facilities for children. For middle and high school age, a mini-trip to the Suvorov Oak is suitable as an educational and interesting vacation. This natural monument received its name not by chance.
Almost 250 years ago, he witnessed the famous battle in which the troops of A.V. Suvorov and the Janissaries. There were four times more of the latter than the Russians, but this did not help them emerge victorious from the battle. According to local legend, before defeating the troops under this oak tree, Suvorov held a meeting with the Janissary ambassadors.
Scientists have calculated that the approximate age of the oak tree is 700 years. Its crown can be seen several kilometers away. To make the oak last longer, several hollows were cemented. Locals recommend going to the Suvorov Oak in a large group.
There is an opinion that only ten adults can hug this giant tree, holding hands, and for children it will be a real educational adventure. The oak tree is located in the Yablochnoye settlement not far from Belogorsk, the journey takes about 10 minutes.
Fans of hiking are advised to leave the car at home - along the way you can fully enjoy the beauty of the Crimean nature. For younger children, you can offer a 3D cinema, which is located directly in the city, as entertainment.
