About the city of Podporozhye

About the city of Podporozhye, the year the city was founded, attractions, hotels, entertainment, reviews of city guests.

The city of Podporozhye is located on the Svir River in the Leningrad Region. From the northern capital to Podporozhye no more than 300 km. The closest city to Podporozhye is the city of Petrozavodsk. Podporozhye received the status of a city in the mid-20th century (in 1956), when the village of the nearest hydroelectric power station and several villages were annexed. It is a small but quite beautiful city with its own history. Its population does not exceed 20 thousand people. 18 city residents have the title of honorary resident.

Those who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city love to come here. The architectural monuments located on the territory, dating from the 15th-17th centuries, amaze travelers who come here with their beauty. For visitors to the city, there is the Pristan Hotel, which is a two-story cozy building with all amenities. It is located not far from the center, and besides, it is a stone's throw from the main attraction of the city - the Verkhne-Svirskaya hydroelectric power station.

The city is home to several large industrial enterprises, which include the Mechanical Plant, the Plant of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Structures, etc. But despite this, the city has clean air. The forests surrounding it create comfortable conditions for travelers and tourists vacationing here.

The city administration is actively developing business activities; a Business Cooperation Center has been specially created here, within the framework of which assistance and advice are provided to beginning entrepreneurs.

The city, despite the small number of its inhabitants, has two higher educational institutions that are branches of St. Petersburg universities (St. Petersburg Institute of Foreign Economic Relations, Economics and Law and Leningrad State University named after A.S. Pushkin). Young people receive education here in various specialties and areas of training. There is also a polytechnic college in Podporozhye, where you can get secondary specialized education.

For those who have not yet finished school, there is the possibility of additional education in the established centers (Center for Children's Creativity, Center for Information Technology, Sports School, Art School and School of the Arts).

Usually tourists coming to Podporozhye visit the main attractions of the city and its cultural institutions, of which there are several in the city. The main one is the local history museum, where you can see extensive materials about the history and culture of the city. The most interesting stories for travelers are the guides' stories about archaeological finds in the city. The museum contains a large collection of materials on numismatics and ethnography. Those interested can here book excursion routes around the areas of the Podporozhye settlement. It is there that you can enjoy the view of architectural monuments of the 15-17 centuries.

A little further from the city, in settlements such as Yuksovichi, Kurpovo and Gimreka, you can see preserved wooden churches that amaze all visitors with their beauty.

Probably, every city that took part in the Great Patriotic War has its own Alley of Heroes or Walk of Fame. The city of Podporozhye is no exception. The names of those who fought for peace on earth are engraved on the concrete slabs of the Podporozhye Alley of Heroes. Busts of war heroes are also installed on the local Alley. War veterans who come here certainly visit the brotherly cemetery, where more than 1,400 defenders are buried. The main events on May 9th are also held here. This memorial is located on the site of a military field hospital. People come here for festive events to honor the memory of departed defenders of the fatherland.

Podporozhye, Russia: holidays, reviews, hotels in Podporozhye

The main and most common excursion in all cities is a sightseeing tour. It takes approximately 1.5 hours. They will tell you and show you the main attractions of the city, churches, Verkhnesvirskaya hydroelectric power station. It will be more interesting to take an individual guide who can tell you many historical and mystical facts about the city.

Since Podporozhye is a young city, the most interesting things are not in it itself, but in the region. For example, a very interesting excursion “Silver Podporozhye Ring”.

The route includes the following objects:

  • Sights of the city of Podporozhye;
  • Wooden architecture in the village of Gomorovichi;
  • Church with a graveyard in the village of Yuksovichi;
  • Church and school of the 17th century in the settlement of Voznesenye;
  • Unique wooden buildings in the villages of Shcheleyki and Gimrek. All wooden architecture of this region belongs to the Onega school.

If the group wishes, the tour can be extended and stop at the village of Sheltozero, where the amazing museum of Vepsian life is located.

Excursions are conducted by the Podporozhye Museum of Local Lore.

Duration – 8 hours. Approximate cost – 3000 rubles.

There is also an extended Wooden Ring tour.

Duration – 2 days. Cost – 6800 rubles.

In addition to the above-mentioned attractions, this includes visits to such villages as Vazhiny, Zaozerye, Posad, Volnavolok and Pidma, where monuments of ancient wooden architecture still exist. The interesting thing about the tour is that these villages are located on the other bank of the Svir River, and the transfer there is carried out by crossing near the Verkhnesvirskaya hydroelectric power station.

An excursion tour to the folklore village of Mandrogi includes not only sightseeing, a guide’s story about the life and way of life of the Russian village, but also a visit to the vodka museum with tasting, and the museum of applied arts. For an additional fee, a master class on any type of folk art can be organized.

    The Verkhnesvirskaya hydroelectric power station plays a decisive role in the issue of navigation on the Svir River. After the construction of the hydroelectric power station, its reservoir flooded the Svir rapids, making the river accessible for the passage of ships. The construction of the hydroelectric power station took many years. The idea to build a dam on the Svir River arose back in 1916. A project was developed according to which it was planned to build two power plants and a control dam for them on the river. However, the revolution of 1917 did not allow the plan to be realized. Only a year later, the Council of People's Commissars reviewed the project estimate and gave the go-ahead for the construction of three hydroelectric power stations and a special shipping lock.

    The idea of creating a local history museum was born spontaneously while working with schoolchildren under the program “Introducing Children to the Origins.” In 1965, it was decided to open a small local history club; a small room in the cultural center was allocated for these purposes. There it was possible to conduct classes with schoolchildren and store exhibits that caring people began to bring. The leadership of the creation of the museum was taken over by I.S. Tolstoy. He himself also took an active part in collecting exhibits for the collection of the future museum.

    "Vepsky Forest" is a unique natural park. Its territory is huge, almost 190 thousand hectares. The beauty of these places cannot be expressed in words. The decision to create a protected area was made by the government of the Leningrad region in 1999. The work of the reserve is carried out for the benefit of nature. The ecosystem disturbed by humans is being restored; valuable species of fish are even returning to the protected area to spawn. Over the years of the park's existence, hundreds of hectares of forest have been preserved from human activity.

Wooden ring of Podporozhye. Part I / My Planet

All of you have probably heard about the Golden Ring of Russia and the Kizhi Museum of Wooden Architecture.
But few people know that in our huge country there is also a Wooden Ring - my next photo report is about it. In the deep forests of the Podporozhsky district of the Leningrad region you can find a sufficient number of abandoned and half-empty villages, in which there are very beautiful and practically unknown monuments of Russian wooden architecture, about which I decided to write my next report, consisting of two parts.

Summer memories of a wonderful trip to Kizhi Island were still fresh in my head. I really wanted to take a similar trip and see something architecturally similar. One autumn day, I sketched out an approximate and not at all tourist route in the north of the Leningrad region in order to again feel the atmosphere of the Russian outback, and at the same time get acquainted with wooden churches and chapels hidden away from prying eyes.

At the beginning of November, I finally managed to go on this planned mini-trip, which I partially repeated in January. Both times the weather was not kind, it was cloudy and snowy in places, so I warn you once that you won’t see bright and sunny shots from both trips in my photo report.

However, in my opinion, the cloudy sky, present in all frames, further contributed to the transfer of that unique atmosphere that reigns in some remote corners of our country and in particular in the north of the Leningrad region.

About 250 kilometers and I’m already in Podporozhye (the regional center, more about it at the end of the second part). The road is excellent and therefore quite fast. I cross the hydroelectric power station on the Svir River and drive about 15 kilometers towards the village of Yakovlevskoye, which is located on Lake Sidozero. Everywhere the asphalt is quite “driveable”; in winter it is regularly cleaned and sprinkled with sand. The village itself is of no interest, the summer residents of the city of Podporozhye have firmly settled there, so now it is just ordinary old gardening. From Yakovlevsky there is an inconspicuous path into the forest, which is almost invisible in winter,

but in summer it is quite possible to drive here with all-wheel drive, crossing a small stream.

This road leads to the other side of the lake... this is where the fun begins. Old, but quite lived-in country houses are replaced by old farmsteads with abandoned houses and bathhouses. The plots are empty - not a soul for several kilometers.

This is the former village of Sidozero. Unfortunately, she did not live to see our time.

Here you gradually begin to realize that you have climbed into a very “deep” outback.

The only reminders of civilization here are the power line and the distant sound of the wheels of passing trains. Somewhere in the distance you can see the black and nondescript silhouette of a building. I add a step.

This is why I came here. One of the important components of the “Podporozhye Wooden Ring” is the Church of Elisha the Prophet. The date of construction of the church is considered to be 1899.

Look - what a beauty she was!!! Looking at this picture, conflicting feelings arise. Delight from the sight of a magnificent monument of wooden architecture, the like of which I have never seen, gives way to sadness and sadness from its condition...

An extraordinary place!!! Autumn colors and a cloudy sky overhead help convey the atmosphere of this place as accurately as possible. This is a rare case when I can say that a photograph not only conveys what was seen, but even enhances the perception.

It feels like there are only two seasons in this place - “gloomy” autumn

and “black and white” winter.

On the forest path, traces of a bear are visible, which just recently came to “clean” the rowan tree before hibernation and trampled all the grass. It seems that the wolves also left “identification marks” here.

The architecture of the church building is absolutely not typical for wooden buildings of that time. The design elements of the temple can be attributed to stone architecture in the pseudo-Russian style.

Under Soviet rule, the church suffered the same fate as thousands of others - it was closed by government decision in 1930. Now the temple is abandoned, is in disrepair and is gradually collapsing.

In winter, I had the opportunity to look at the church from the lake.

And this is still the same bathhouse and boats.

The route directly across the lake takes much less time. I enjoyed a walk, breathed in the frosty January air and admired the magnificent winter views.

Residents of Yakovlevsky say that representatives of one of the leading Russian television companies recently came and did a full filming of the Church of Elisha the Prophet for restoration. So there is hope that this beauty will be rescued in the near future.

On this positive note, I finish my tour of this magnificent and mesmerizing place and head back to the Lodeynoye Pole - Vytegra road. I turn towards Vytegra and go to the village of Rodionovo (Yuksovichi).

About 30 kilometers along the way I make a stop in the village of Gomorovichi. There are only 4 permanent residents, but once upon a time the old Arkhangelsk highway passed through the village and life was in full swing here.

In Homorovichi there is the Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, built in the 18th century. Most recently, next to it stood the 19th-century Trinity Church, which burned down in a fire in 2006.

The village of Rodionovo is a metropolis by local standards. As many as 48 permanent residents!

The village is located on Lake Yuksovskoye. Hence the second name Yuksovichi.

Very quiet and beautiful place.

There is even a store and post office here.

This narrow-gauge railway carriage was converted by local residents into a boat garage.

A couple of these village dogs with pitiful eyes were my guides.

Destroyed houses and buildings are sometimes found here, but are relatively rare.

The main attraction of Rodionovo is the Wooden Church of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious.

It was built by monastic craftsmen back in 1493... I can’t even believe it.

Just like the Church of Elisha the Prophet, it has a very unusual, albeit simple, architecture. In winter, I rode along the shore of the lake on a snowmobile and appreciated the view that can be seen while riding a boat in the summer.

I really like villages like this. They like it because everything here is real, everyday life, farms, people. Life here goes on as usual, and there are almost no tourists.

In the same Kizhi (Part I, Part II) or Mandrogi (I will tell you in the near future) it is educational and beautiful - no doubt, but these are still museums with brought exhibits and invited staff. In the next part of my photo story we will go towards Lake Onega and visit wonderful places: Ascension, Krasny Bor, Gimreka and Shcheleyki.
